Mad Max Fury Road to Shoot in Early 2012?

Tom Hardy is one of the biggest stars to come out of 2010 with a major career boost. He stole the spotlight in Inception, earned a prime supporting role in The Dark Knight Rises, and did we mention he’s the new Mad Max? The British actor is picking up where Mel Gibson left off in George Miller’s Australian, desert epic. Even though the film has been in development for a while, they’ve yet to settle on a production start date — or have they?

According to The Daily Telegragh, Miller is looking to start filming Fury Road in early 2012. The film has been delayed multiple times for various reasons, and the director anxiously wants to get things going.

“We’ve built the vehicles,” Miller says, “We’ve designed the movie. The principal cast is locked in. The film is funded. It’s all ready to go. We just wait.”

Miller’s not making just one film, he’s shooting two sequels back to back: Mad Max: Fury Road and Mad Max: Furiosa. The reason behind their new production start is weather. They’re looking to dodge the excessive rain that has ruined their Australian desert location.

Hopefully, when the new year comes around they can immediately get to work. A lot of people want to see if Hardy can pull off such an iconic role. Plus, we want to see him in those famous leather pants. Bring on Max!

Charlize Theron To Play A One Armed Bandit in Mad Max

Even though the plot of George Miller’s long awaited Mad Max sequel is being kept under wraps, we’ve learned some startling info about one of its main characters. Oscar winner Charlize Theron’s stunt double Annabelle Williams opened up about her role with an Australian ABC affiliate, and revealed that she will be a different type of female lead. She’ll be strong, beautiful, and have one arm.

Williams is “a 22-year-old Gold Coast freestyler, whose most significant credits to date are bronze medals at the 2008 Paralympics and 2006 Commonwealth Games.” She recently revealed that she’ll be doubling for Ms. Theron in Fury Road, which states the obvious about the character. Last winter the producers sent out a casting notice for “an athletic, blonde woman with half an arm to be the stunt double for one of Hollywood’s most glamorous women.”

Williams will stand in for Theron in wide shots during fight scenes so they won’t have to use CGI to cut out her arm. She has undergone months of martial arts training including Muay Thai to ensure that she can handle the action.

Riley Keough Cast in Mad Max: Fury Road

Riley Keough is following in the footsteps of her legendary grandfather Elvis Presley and her grandmother Priscilla. According to a report from THR, she’s trying her hand at acting with a role in the upcoming Mad Max sequel Fury Road. She’ll star alongside Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron who’ll play the leads in the film.

According to the trade, Keough will star as one of the “Five Wives,” a group of young women that Hardy must protect that includes Aussie native Teresa Palmer, Zoe Kravitz, and Adelaide Clemens. Four out of the five roles have been cast, so it makes us wonder who’ll they’ll get to play the fifth? The plot of Fury Road is being kept under wraps but it’s said to take place shortly after 1985′s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. You know, the one with Tina Turner?

Once again, Fury Road will be directed by George Miller and also stars Clash of the Titans actor Nicholas Hoult. The film is expected to start shooting sometime early next year. Keough made her feature film debut in The Runaways as Cherie Currie’s sister, which she’ll follow up with roles in Jack and Diane, The Good Doctor, and of course Mad Max: Fury Road.

Tom Hardy on Mad Max: Fury Road

This weekend was a big promotion fest for a lot of summer film’s including Christopher Nolan’s latest, Inception. Over at Collider, they got to sit in on an interview with one of its stars who happens to be the successor to George Miller’s long running Mad Max franchise. We’re talking about British actor Tom Hardy, who’ll go from suits to shotguns when he starts working on the project.

First off, the look that Hardy has in Inception will not transfer over onto Mad Max. The actor claims that he’s lost 30 pounds for the role and says he’ll look like “a hungry wolf” or a “puma.” Besides his character’s physical prowess, the biggest question everyone has on their minds is when will production begin. According to Hardy,

Hardy: I can’t say when I’m going to be in front of the cameras. I’m actually headed tonight to Australia to start some stunt-training. I’m training now. Even though I’m smoking. I’m meant to drop 30 pounds so smoking and one meal a day is my training at the moment. I’m going to start fighting soon. The harder stuff, as we get close to the line. I’ll probably get three or four months of fight training out there. Seven days a week. All that kind of horrible shit.

Speaking of the horrible yet imperative sh*t, the actor’s not sure if his character will have an Australian accent or not, which we think is blasphemy! How can you have Mad Max without it?!

Hardy: It’s up to people like George. I don’t know. I don’t know. Whatever suits the revisit. It would be bold for me to give you an honest answer now. I don’t know and a lot has to be left to the process. It depends on what feeds the project for the best of the project, always.

Overall, Mad Max Fury Road will be it’s own animal but will still find a way to pay homage to the original.

Hardy: It’s a relaunch and revisit to the world. An entire restructuring. That’s not to say that it’s not picking up or leaving off from the Mad Max you know already, but it’s a nice re-take on the entire world using the same character, depositing him in the same world but bringing him up to date by 30 years. Mel would be perfect for it but, for some reason, he’s not doing it and I am. You can expect the same amount of grit and rawness and authenticity and performance, I hope to deliver.

But that’s really the crux of me and George to deliver and all the other actors as the other characters. But also we have the new world afforded to filmmakers today with all the opportunities. I think the boys that did Lord of the Rings are involved. That kind of stuff as well. CGI is not going to be — I think it’s going to be much more about how you deal with action. These things are going to be really there. Big rigs, big explosions, big car crashes. Big violence, you know. It’s going to actually happen as opposed to doing a 2D turned to 3D screen. It’s going to be an adventure, let’s put it that way. We’re shooting for a year.

There you have it. This is the closest we’ve gotten to another Mad Max movie actually happening and it sounds like Miller has his stuff together. It’s been such a long time since the character and the landscape were visited. We hope everything goes off without a hitch.

Teresa Palmer NOT in Mad Max: Fury Road

Earlier today we learned that Lake Bell dropped out of Wes Craven’s Scream 4, and now another fourth film has lost a cast member. According Coming Soon, Australian actress Teresa Palmer won’t be appearing in George Miller’s highly anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road. The film currently stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron but no Palmer…

When the actress spoke about her involvement with Fury Road she stated that they were just “internet rumors.” This is an interesting development considering that her Sorcerer’s Apprentice co-star Jay Baruchel outed her in January at a press conference when he said she had one of the lead roles in the film.

“She gets to work with him, and she’s (going to be) doing ‘Mad Max 4′ with Miller,” Baruchel said, adding, “She’s the main chick in ‘Fury Road’. She’s going to be there for over a year. It’s really, really cool.”

What happened there? She couldn’t have been the love interest for Hardy, could she? If so, Theron is definitely a better fit and the studio probably wanted to go with an actress who was well known considering Hardy’s up and coming status. Either way, it’s kind of sad that she couldn’t stay around to play someone in the film. I’m sure Miller would have loved having another Aussie in the cast.

Nicholas Hoult Cast in Mad Max 4

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are already set as the leads in Mad Max 4, so all we have to do is wait for the rest of the cast to fall into place. According to THR, that’s exactly what’s happening as not one, not two, but four new actors are coming on board to star in the film. Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Teresa Palmer, and Adelaide Clemens are in various stages of negotiations to tackle roles in the long awaited sequel.

It’s hard to imagine that the little kid from About a Boy grew up to be a strikingly handsome young man. He appeared as the oversexed Tony in the BBC series “Skins,” starred in the indie drama A Single Man, and even has a role in this year’s Clash of the Titans. Now he’ll appear in Mad Max as a character named Nux. The plot for the film doesn’t tell us a lot about him or anyone else aside from the fact that it takes place shortly after the events in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

Zoe Kravitz’s character is called Five Wives, and she’ll be in a convoy along with Palmer and Clemens that’s being chased down by some bad guys. It just wouldn’t be a Mad Max movie without a violent chase thrown in there. I’m interested in seeing how all these young kids will be related to the title character. What’s their real purpose?

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy Cast in Mad Max

It’s official! Charlize Theron and British actor Tom Hardy are both in negotiations to star in Mad Max 4 aka Fury Road. Just last week we reported on speculation that the two actors were taking on the leads in the long awaited sequel and according to THR, it’s been confirmed.

According to the trade, Hardy has been knighted the new “Max Rockatansky, the hardened ex-cop in a future beset by gas shortages and marauding gangs.” Director George Miller stated on previous occasions that he wasn’t particularly interested in Mel Gibson reprising the role that he played 24 years ago for another movie. This time he decided to take a youthful approach by casting Hardy instead.

Theron has just been classified as the female lead, and we’re unsure of her character traits at the moment. As for the film’s story, it’s being kept under lock and key but a few hints show a connection to 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which keeps Mad Max relatively young.

With the two leads nailed down, perhaps we can finally get some serious movement on this film. Fury Road has been in development for years, and no one really knew if it was going to happen or not. I’m happy with the choices the director made, and I think both actors will do a great job in their respective parts.

Shortly after rumors of Hardy and Theron surfaced last week, more casting speculation leaked suggesting that Sam Worthington would fill Gibson’s coveted role. Thank God that didn’t happen. Nothing against the actor, but I think Sam needs a break from iconic action heroes for a while. He’s so much more than that.

George Miller Talks Mad Max, Cars and Mel Gibson

George Miller continues to feed the publicity machine with his pending Mad Max sequel, Fury Road. It seems like every other post we write has to do with that film, and here’s more fuel to add to the fire. The director recently spoke with ABC News about some of the props (cars) that will be used in the fourth installment, as well as a few casting tidbits for the “Road Warrior” franchise.

As you can see from the video he spoke about a lot of the tech stuff that goes into making an action film in today’s day and age. He makes the stunt work sound pretty serious, so that was an exciting aspect to hear him speak on. Other than that, I want a straight yay or nay on a Mel Gibson cameo! Even though it would be interesting to see what other home grown Australian talent he will pick up for the title role, I’m going to need more options thrown out besides Sam Worthington.

Sam Worthington to Star in Mad Max: Fury Road?

The Mad Max sequel Fury Road has had one of the most productive week’s I’ve seen in a very long time. Just the other day we reported on casting rumors regarding Charlize Theron and Bronson‘s Tom Hardy co-starring in the fourth film, that will once again be directed by George Miller. According to THR, the budget has already been set and production on the film will begin a lot earlier than you think.

The trade reports that Fury Road will have a production budget of 100 million dollars, even though no studio backing has been formally announced.

“In the hands of director George Miller, we will see one of the largest and most ambitious live-action films ever made in Australia. This is a clear vote of confidence in Australian expertise. This proves that Sydney is an international contender for major film production.”

This is an interesting statement considering the fact that The Green Lantern film just transferred their production from down under due to the excessive cost. On another note, casting for the film has once again been shaken via a report from the Daily Telegraph.

There has been no confirmation yet of who will play the role of the Road Warrior but rumors abound it will be Australian Terminator star Sam Worthington, with Charlize Theron to co-star. The Daily Telegraph has learned that work on the film will start immediately, injecting tens of millions of dollars into the economy and creating more than 500 jobs.

This conflicts with the statement from THR, that states that production will start sometime next year, even though the Telegraph insists the shoot will begin immediately. Who do we believe? There have been so many rumors flying around these past few days regarding this movie. Does Sam really need to play every iconic action hero ever created? I like the guy but come on.

Could this be a casting development for the upcoming Mad Max sequel/reboot? There have been rumors floating around regarding the fourth installment of the action franchise that made Mel Gibson a star for years. Director George Miller has been more than vocal about his desire to produce another film. Now we’re hearing rumors via EOnline that Oscar winner Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy may have been cast as the leads in the new film.

The working title being used for the film is Mad Max: Fury Road, instead of Mad Max 4 (that doesn’t roll the tongue as well). According to multiple sources, Theron is already on board to star as the female lead in the movie that will feature British actor Tom Hardy replacing Gibson in the title role. Miller stated himself that Gibson was too old to continue on in the series so he planned to recast him.

We also heard that The Hurt Locker star, Jeremy Renner was up for the title role in the film, but obviously that speculation has died down. I’m not sure if I even care about a fourth Mad Max film. Is that bad? Thunderdome was pushing it for me, I’ll always be a fan of the very first installment of the series. Even though Mel is no longer the star, he has to make some type of cameo right? They just can’t ignore his existence.

Is Jeremy Renner the Next Mad Max?

The star of the critically acclaimed film, The Hurt Locker has been gaining some serious momentum in recent weeks. Jeremy Renner just signed on to star in the Ben Affleck film The Town, and now there are rumors that he may take over the role that made Mel Gibson a phenomenon, Mad Max! According to Empire, the actor may be set to star as the lead in Mad Max 4, which is currently titled, Fury Road.

So much speculation has been made about the upcoming film that director George Miller has been talking about for years. In a recent interview Renner stated, “I’m also fighting to do the new Mad Max film… That might be next summer. I’m screen-testing and meeting George Miller.” Hmmm, so I take it this new movie won’t include Gibson as previously suggested. Back in 2006, Miller himself said he felt that Mel’s Max had run his course.

“The time has gone where Mel can run around the wasteland. I think the last opportunity was about four years ago and, y’know, the character’s lean and hungry. He was 21 when he first played Mad Max and he’s now in his 50s. Also I think he’s much more interested in what’s happening behind camera than in front.”

I don’t know how much of an argument that is considering the fact that since that interview we’ve seen Rocky Balboa, Live Free Die Hard, and most recently Indiana Jones: The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I can understand him not wanting it to be completely “Mel-centered,” but a brief appearance would be nice. As for Renner, I’m not against him working on the film, but it would be nice to see some type of passing of the torch that involves the actor who originated the role.

George Miller Gets Animated With Mad Max 4

Dammit, I thought we were done with this?! I had heard rumors about a possible fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise, but I didn’t believe the hype. According to MTV, I can breathe a sigh of relief because even though it looks like the film will happen, it wont be in the capacity that we think. In an exclusive interview with Mad Max director George Miller, he revealed that the next film will be a 3-D anime!

Mad Max as an anime? Can it happen? Most importantly, where does Mel Gibson fit in all of this? According to the director, Gibson wont be the center of attention in this one. With this animated feature, Miller has decided not to use his voice for the lead. He simply stated, “We’ll probably go a different route.” Ouch.

The film will be rated R and will incorporate the same elements that were present in the other three movies.

I see myself as someone who is very curious about storytelling and all its various media,” Miller said. “I’ve always loved anime, in particular the Japanese sensibility. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” “The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change,” he explained. “It’s coming in games and I believe it’s the same in anime. There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities. [Japanese filmmaker Akira] Kurosawa was able to bridge that gap between the Japanese sensibilities and the West and make those definitive films.”

He’s working an interesting angle here, but I’m still on the fence. It’s hard enough making one or two sequels decent but a third? We saw what happened to Superman IV. Not only is Miller not going to have the one person who is synonymous with the main character, but he’s also changing the format of the film. Brave man.
