We have a lot of movie castings to report this week, one which includes a recent three-time Emmy winner. Yep, we’re talking about Bryan Cranston (from AMC’s “Breaking Bad“), who along with Teresa Palmer and Luke Wilson has landed a new acting gig. Here are some updates regarding Nick Cassavetes upcoming film Yellow, Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Say Nothing, and Suri Krishnamma’s The Grief Tourist…

The Grief Tourist centers on “a disturbed and troubled soul, Jim Tahana, retraces the footsteps of serial killers who fascinate him as his hobby. His dark obsession with past killers soon becomes his reality and leads viewers on a menacing and horrific journey inside his twisted mind.” The film will star Cranston and Michael Cudlitz (“Southland“). Next, there’s the Australian film Say Nothing which stars Teresa Palmer and Joel Edgerton. The film centers on “a husband and wife who go on an ill-fated holiday in South East Asia with her sister and the sister’s boyfriend.” Edgerton’s brother Nash Edgerton will produce and do all the film’s stunts! Last but not least there’s Yellow, a drama about a young woman with a drug habit and a myriad of other problems. It stars an ensemble cast including Sienna Miller, Lucy Punch, Ben Foster, Melanie Griffith and Gena Rowlands with the latest additions of David Morse, Luke Wilson, Hank Azaria (in a cameo appearance) and Riley Keough. Middle Men forces the most conservative viewer to take a walk on the wild side. The film centers on the world of internet porn and how it came to be. Apparently two druggies (one who’s a genius), a clean cut business man, a mafia boss, and an underhanded lawyer all played a part in one of the biggest and most lucrative industries in the world. This film attempts to tell their story, and give star Luke Wilson a few legitimate dramatic scenes in the process.

The Plot:

Middle Men takes place in 1995 when the internet was still in its infancy stage. At the time, it didn’t have much to offer in terms of content but two men named Wayne Beering (Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Macht) changed all that. They came up with a way to get adult entertainment on the web and a business man named Jack Harris (Wilson) helped them make money off it. At the time they had no idea how big the internet would become or how much money they could earn.

The Good:

James Caan: Caan’s performance as a sleazy, out for himself lawyer was one of the most impressive things to watch in this film. He wasn’t doing his usual mobster shtick, which he’s become known for. He stepped outside the box and played a character completely engulfed with greed and white collar crime. His character is stuck up, not afraid to get his hands dirty, and has the slimy voice to match.
The Story: The overall premise is pretty intriguing. Two simpleminded coke-heads changed the face of the most powerful tool in the world by accident and while high.

The Kind of Bad:

Ribisi and Macht: These two guys are at the center of the story yet their characters are hard to watch. Every scene Ribisi’s in he steals the spotlight but after a while his loud and obnoxious antics grow tiresome. Both characters are drug addicts and their always going 100 miles an hour. They have no range, their always amped up, and it becomes repetitive and annoying after a while.

The Bad:

The Narration: This is a prime example of a movie that takes the art of the voice over to the extreme. Wilson narrates scenes that don’t need to be narrated. There’s literally a shot of him saying he’s going to knock on a door and then he knocks on a door! That’s self explanatory. No voice over needed.
The Timeline: The timeline set up for the film is all over the place. Within the first 10 minutes you hop from 2004 to 1997, then the late eighties and then the mid-nineties. It’s hard to keep track.

Overall:

Middle Men is a decent film, Wilson delivers a solid performance but Caan walks away with some of the best scenes. It’s entertaining but nothing to write home about.

Rating: 6/10

Paramount Vantage has just released the first trailer for their porn-centric film, Middle Men. If you’re thinking this is an updated version of Boogie Nights get your mind out of the gutter because its not. Instead, it centers on the rise of adult entertainment on the internet thanks to a few men who weren’t afraid to push the envelope. Take a look…

They came up with a way to get adult entertainment on the web and a business man named Jack Harris (Luke Wilson) helped them make money off it.

At the time they had no idea how big the internet would become or how much money they could earn. It’s a typical rags to riches story that shows the rise and the eventual fall of its protagonists. Besides the 3 main stars, the trailer has plenty of cameo appearances including Kevin Pollack and Kelsey Grammer who plays a corrupt senator with an affinity for workplace porn.

Middle Men was directed by George Gallo and is scheduled hit theaters on August 6, 2010

Luke and Andrew Wilson to Direct Electric Avenue

During a one on one interview over at MTV for actor-director Andrew Wilson‘s latest film Whip It he talked about teaming up with one of his younger brothers again for an upcoming project. It turns out that Andrew will be teaming up with Luke Wilson for the film Electric Avenue. Now, if you’re like me that catchy song from the eighties just popped into your head, so this has to be a comedy right? Well, not necessarily…

Wilson seemed to keep his mouth shot about what type of movies he had in mind, although he did say, “It’s kind of like a 48 Hrs. type buddy comedy. Except instead of cops, they’re reporters.” Doesn’t sound too funny too me, although he could always take it in that direction.

The actor said that Luke will star in one of the lead roles but he wouldn’t reveal who would play his partner (perhaps Owen would join the party or is that too easy?( This won’t be the first time that Andrew and Luke have teamed up to direct. The duo previously helmed the 2005 film, The Wendell Baker Story.

The film will begin production as early as January or February, so chances are we’ll be hearing a lot more about the Wilson brothers.

I can’t help but wonder who else might be set to co-star with Luke in Electric Avenue? According to Andrew he can’t make the announcement yet. I have a feeling it’s Owen, but isn’t he too busy hanging out with Wes Anderson? Is so, who else might be go for?

Battle for Terra is Boring at Best

The 3-D film Battle for Terra takes place in the distant future on the alien inhabited planet of the same name. It’s a peaceful world where gravity doesn’t exist, and it’s occupants float from place to place. On the surface it seems as if it’s citizens have no knowledge of war or suffering, just harmony and equality. When a human space colony which includes the last existing members of mankind attack Terra in an attempt to colonize the planet, the true nature of the Terrians is revealed. A full on battle for Terra’s land and resources erupts with the future of both sides hanging in the balance.

The film features the voice talent of Evan Rachel Wood as Mala and Luke Wilson as Jim. Mala is a native of Terra who’s father is taken when the planet is raided by the human invaders. While attempting a rescue effort to save her father she stumbles upon an injured human named Jim. Hoping that he can help her get into the colony, Mala nurses him back to health and the two form a special friendship. This puts Jim in an uncomfortable position as he is torn between his promise to help Mala and his loyalty to the humans.

Battle for Terra is a film that starts off with beautiful images which make you feel like you’re in for a treat, but unfortunately beyond that it doesn’t deliver. The film is rated PG, yet I don’t think it has the necessary elements to entertain children. Even as an adult I found myself having a hard time caring about the characters. The character design wasn’t appealing and the dialogue was quite dull. There are also underlying themes that I felt were a too heavy for children and not interesting for adults. The idea of self sacrifice and destruction appear several times in the film, and I think it may go over the head of younger viewers.

If you’re a parent and looking for something to entertain your child, I would skip Battle for Terra. The film has the potential to be something great, but the script doesn’t do it justice.

Battle for Terra was directed by Aristomenis Tsirbas, and co-stars Brian Cox, David Cross, James Garner, Justin Long, Chris Evans, Danny Glover, and Amanda Peet.

Battle for Terra Trailer and Speculation

So what’s the deal with this film? They’ve had trouble getting it into theaters for the past 2-3 years which makes me a little apprehensive. It’s either a great movie that has had trouble finding a market or it’s a bad movie that someone has finally decided to take on, knowing that they’ll make back their expenditures in DVD sales. So let’s look at what this film has going for it.

The film has been screened at the Toronto Film Festival, the Tribeca Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, and many other festivals over the past two years, and has won three awards along the way including one for Best Feature and another for Beat Animated Feature. It was originally titled Terra but has now been named Battle for Terra. Perhaps that will help it sell? And if nothing else it has a really impressive cast with voices by Evan Rachel Wood, Brian Cox, Luke Wilson, David Cross, Justin Long, Amanda Peet, Dennis Quaid, Chris Evans and more.

Sounds pretty good until you hear that the writer also wrote The Nutty Professor. Scary.
