With Netflix splitting its rentals between DVD and streaming – and in doing so focusing more on streaming content – we’re seeing a quicker evolution on how people watch television. The changes are such that actual televisions aren’t even necessary in the process anymore, and many rentals and movies that people own no longer exist in a physical state. TV has been in American households since the late 40′s, but what was once the cornerstone of every American household has been taking a hit from how high speed internet and companies like Apple and Netflix have changed how people can watch entertainment at home. So let’s look at some of the biggest changes and evolutions of the old boob tube, shall we?

1.) Invention

Television was developed (at least theoretically) around the time of the invention of the telephone, but was not practical until the late 1920’s. By the 1930’s Television signals were in use, and it became available commercially in America by 1939 – though there was little production and use during World War II.

Fact: In 1939 there were less than 1,000 sets in use, with 441 lines of resolution.

2.) Mass Production

TV didn’t become mainstream until 1948, when people were finally home from war, and the American economy was stronger than ever. Homes had already adopted to radio, and television was the natural extension. Cinema worried about the growing desire (and – more to the point – being replaced) so it created stereoscopic sound and CinemaScope, but television was making its way into people’s homes and there was no going back. With radio stars like Lucille Ball and Milton Berle on TV, television was of the moment. It quickly became the dominant form for entertainment.

Fact: In 1953 there were 25,233,000 Television in use, with a maximum 525 lines of resolution. The top movie of the year (The Robe) sold 64.8 Million tickets.

3.) Color

Though invented in 1953, color television wasn’t standardized until the late 60′s when TV networks adopted to the format. In 1966 networks introduced their all color line-up, and color TV models became practical. The movie business, which had already lost a lot of business to television, was also going through a rocky period as studios were mounting expensive productions that were flopping – the industry was changing, and color TV hurt cinema that much more.

Fact: In 1966 there were 53.850,000 Televisions in use and in 93% of American Homes. The top movie of 1965 – The Sound of Music – sold 125 Million tickets.

4) Cable

Though cable was available as early as 1948, the FCC choked its growth until the 1970′s, when it was deregulated. In 1972 HBO was born. Other channels developed as well, and by 1984 the “Cable Growth Act” made getting cable less restrictive. One of the big innovations was the birth of MTV in 1981, which changed the pop culture landscape and pop music – for better and worse. With less restrictions on the format and more channels coming, cable was and still is divided between basic and pay channels. Basic cable channels were often like TBS – a local network broadcast through satellite throughout the country – but as the industry grew, more and more original programming was developed, with such networks as Nickelodeon, VH1 and Comedy Central coming to the fore (Comedy Central was a combination of two networks, the Ha! Channel and The Comedy Channel). The growing options for home entertainment set the tone for how we consume media now.

Fact: In 1977 there were over 12 million cable subscribers, by 1992 there were over 57 Million.

5.) Stereo Sound and VHS

As the 1980′s progressed there was an attempt to get better quality television in homes (lines of resolution were still limited), and in 1984 stereo sound was added to broadcast television. Shows would note “in Stereo” before the start, and noting that continued into the 1990′s (Mystery Science Theater 3000 started with a parody of this with its slogan “Turn Down Your Lights… Where Applicable”). Though having stereo in homes was not a big change, with it (and projector televisions, and the size of televisions expanding) it was the start of creating better home theaters. Televisions were getting modernized.

HDTV was in development, but to get better quality in homes there would have to be a huge paradigm shift. Also added to the scene was VHS (and its competitor Betamax), which allowed people to record shows and record shows they weren’t at home for if they could figure out how to program their VCRs (numerous comedy routines were based around people not understanding how to program a VCR).

Fact: In 1985 14% of households with TVs had a VCR. By 1995 79% of households had one.

6.) DVD and Flat Screens

Though laserdiscs and S-VHS never made much of an impression on the general public, in 1997 DVD was launched, and completely changed the home video landscape. The CD to VHS’s audio tapes, the format offered better picture and sound, and eventually killed off video tape. The biggest drawback was that DVD didn’t record, and though steps were made to make DVD-R’s for home use, eventually that need was killed by DVR.

But more than replacing video tape, it helped accelerate home theater technology. One of the big evolutions was the flat screen format, which allowed for a reduction in weight versus the old curved screen model (a 32=inch TV used to weight around 200 pounds, where a flat screen of the same size weighs around 50 pounds). In 2005 flat screens were the industry standard, and HDTV’s offered 1080 lines of resolution versus the original standard of 480. By 2006, Flat screens and HDTV were mass produced to the point that their prices dropped to make them no longer just for the collector, and these days manufacturers no longer make 4×3 (or 1.33:1, or non-widescreen) models any more. The Government had long been suggesting a switch to all=digital for television broadcast, but it took until 2009 for that change to finally be enforced. But this switch to digital picture was also a move toward integrating the home theater with growing computer technology.

Fact: 2005′s A History of Violence was the last film released on VHS.

7.) Tivo and DVR

In 1999, Tivo was launched and changed the way people could watch television with DVRing (aka Digital Video Recording). It would record shows while you watched them, so if you delayed your start you could skip commercials. You could also sign up for a season pass, and make sure you didn’t miss your favorite show – or save them for a rainy day. Tivo in its prime had 4.36 million user, but DVR transcended Tivo itself. Now, a company like DirecTV has 19.2 Million users, all of whom have free DVR. Between that and the popularity of seasons of TV shows being collected on DVD, how people would watch (or re-watch) a program changed, so much so that the narratives of television stories reflected audiences who would watch every episode, versus the old standard of shows that were written so a viewer could watch them in virtually any order.

Fact: Janet Jackson’s Superbowl Nipple slip is still one of the most Tivo’d events in history, and changed network television’s censorship standards.

8.) Smart TV

With Smart TV, streaming video has become a battleground, where Apple, Netgear, Logitech, Boxee and many others are competing to get the best streaming video on the market. Watching television no longer necessarily involves watching a television, with many shows set to stream on tablets and computers. We’ve also seen HBO get into streaming their shows after release, but only for subscribers – something that seems destined to change.

Between renting shows that just aired through iTunes and Hulu, people can now watch things whenever they feel like (not to mention Netflix instant), and the technology is moving in the Smart TV direction where web-based technology allows internet access to television. With shows available for rent or for free online shortly after broadcast, we’re now seeing movies follow this example with video on demand – where consumers can watch a movie at home just as easily as going to the theater (this has been a boom for low budget and art films in that making a print of a movie can cost thousands of dollars).

Fact: One in four people in 2011 use Hulu to watch TV and Movies.

Overall:

Ultimately, the internet has irrevocably changed how people consume television. Currently Smart TV have sold over 2 Million units worldwide, but it’s in less than a million US homes. Like Blu-ray technology, we’re still in the infancy of this format. The Wild West days. But – as this list shows – it takes a while for most innovations to become standardized. And to that, we’re seeing that all of these innovations have been incorporated into the latest technology – Netflix streams movies in HD and 5.1 surround and allow the instant access of DVRing something, while Hulu offers many premium cable shows through their streaming networks. As time has shown it’s likely this will all come together in one package (one can already see it on the way) and from there, there big question is, what’s next?

So now that you know where we’ve been, where do you think TV will go? What’s the next big step for TV?

ABC’s “Lost” hasn’t been off the air for a whole year yet and they’re already planning a reunion. At the 2010 Spike TV Scream Awards, the cast and creators of “Lost” are set to reunite on stage as they unveil a special farewell tribute to the show. Some of the cast has already been confirmed to attend with several more on the way. Check out who’ll be there…

So far Jorge Garcia (Hurley), Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond), and Harold Perrineau (Michael), as well as exec producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have all been confirmed to appear on the show, which will include “pyrotechnics and a filmed tribute.” Yes, they’re going all out for this one. The show’s series finale aired after the 2009 Scream Awards took place, so naturally this year’s ceremony will make up for that.

Hopefully, with all the focus on “Lost” it will keep those Twilight lovers at bay. Spike TV has produced a new promo for the special event featuring “Dr. Chang” aka Miles’ dad on the show. Take a look…

Back when Emerson and O’Quinn appeared on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” “Lost” special, the host made a joke about the two of them partnering up for a lighter, new show. We guess the actors took his suggestion seriously because they’re currently looking for work — together. According to report from the Associated Press,

Emerson says they both want something more lighthearted and that the show can acknowledge their “age and frailty.” Emerson says he envisions a show where, if their characters get hit in the face, they “don’t get up for a month.”

This sounds like a middle age comedy that we could actually get behind. To be completely honest, they don’t have to appear on the same show but it would be great for them to have steady work again. “Lost” showcased their talent every week for six years, we know what these two are capable of. Let’s get them a new gig, stat!

Would you watch a show with Emerson and O’Quinn together again?

Earlier this week we brought you a little piece of footage taken from the 12 minute epilogue that’s featured on the “Lost: The Complete Series” DVD set. It’s supposed to answer a good chunk of the questions that got completely ignored during the actual finale. We don’t know how but the entire epilogue has leaked onto the internet. If you were a fan of the series but got turned off by the last episode this should give you some closure. Key word “should.” Watch the video…

**Video has been removed. We’re looking for another copy. Stay tuned!

Well, do you feel that? Do you feel the relief that washes over your body? Not really because this can’t make up for 6 seasons of unanswered mystery. Apparently it features a lot of Ben Linus aka Michael Emerson doing his usual bug-eyed shtick and a scene with a damn near grown Walt. At least they brought him back into the fold. We missed little Walt.

Miles’ dad Professor Chang also gets into the mix by narrating some employee video for the Dharma Initiative. How exciting? Not!

What do you think of the Lost epilogue? Was it worth your time? Most importantly, are you going to buy the DVD set?

It’s been a few months since the final episode of “Lost” aired on ABC, and as you would expect the series didn’t really give a sense of closure. Some story lines were wrapped up but a lot were just open ended mindf*cks that left us in the dark. That’s why when ABC announced that they were releasing extra, unseen footage on the special “Lost: The Complete Series” DVD fans jumped for joy. Over at Access Hollywood they’ve actually released a clip from the “New Man in Charge” epilogue. Take a look…

You’ll be able to see more footage from the show when the DVD set hits shelves on August 24th. It’s said to feature more scenes highlighting Hurley and Ben’s story that wasn’t explored during the finale. This is great for all of you who are interested in what happened between those two but it does nothing for me and my questions.

I’m more interested in basic stuff like…what the f*ck was the island? Why was there a polar bear? What was up with women, death, and babies? You know those questions.

What do you think of the first scene from the Lost epilogue? Do you plan on buying the DVD set?

After watching the “Lost” series finale on Sunday you probably felt one of two ways: you either loved it or loathed it! According to the comments that followed our review of the last episode a lot of you were up in arms about how Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse decided to finish off six years of mystery. Instead of giving legitimate answers, we got a sappy, all’s well that ends well resolution that a 4 year old could have come up with.

If that didn’t cut it for you, we’ve found a video online that gives us an alternate ending that actually has some type of entertainment value…

Spoiler Alert for Lost ending: Jack ended up sacrificing his life to restore balance back to the island and in his final moments he landed in the same bamboo field that he awakened from after the initial plane crash in episode one. It payed homage to that scene by bringing in Vincent the dog and having him stay with Jack before he died and went on to a self-created purgatory that the rest of the castaways were also in (rolls eyes).

But what if this happened instead?

What do you think of this alternate Lost ending?

If you’re still angry about the conclusion of ABC’s “Lost” there may be hope for a REAL resolution. The network is releasing “Lost: The Complete Collection” on DVD and Blu-ray this summer and it will feature some extra footage that didn’t make the cut during the finale. According to Michael Emerson, who starred as the conniving Ben Linus on the show, he and Jorge Garcia shot a few island scenes that never made the air.

Emerson visited the G4 series “Attack of the Show,” where he revealed that there’s more to the story after Hurley and Ben became number 1 and number 2 of the island.

“Well, for those people that want to pony up and buy the Complete Lost Series, there is a bonus feature, which is, um, you could call it an epilogue, a lost scene,” he said. “It’s a lot, it’s 12 or 14 minutes that opens a window onto that gap of unknown time between Hurley becoming number one and the end of the series.”

The DVD and Blu-ray will be available on August 24th, so you’ve got plenty of time to decide whether or not those extra 12 or 14 minutes are worth your money. In hindsight, I couldn’t care less because unless they’ve got some extra footage answering a few of the MANY questions they left open ended about the island itself I’m not interested.

Do you plan on buying the complete Lost series on DVD? Do you think the extra footage will answer some questions?

Last night, after six seasons of torture fans of ABC’s “Lost” finally got some answers…sort of. The show went out with an emotional bang, tying up some loose ends, but still keeping an air of mystery. For some people that formula worked and for others it turned out to be a major disappointment. After letting the final events stir in your head overnight it’s time to decide whether or not the finale of “Lost” lived up to its hype. Vote in our poll and let us know what you think…

If you haven’t read our review of last night’s episode “The End,” now would be a good time to do so. While it did give us some closure by featuring several characters from the past, there were still moments that left us wanting more. Several of the island’s mysteries were never resolved and we’re pretty sure Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse had no intention on doing so when they planned the series’ conclusion. So did their approach help or hinder the final episode of the show?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The finale of “Lost” was well written and did come full circle in terms of Jack and his journey on and off the island. That character has been through the wringer and if anyone received some type of closure it was him. As for everyone else, it’s left open to interpretation as to when they died and what they did with the rest of their lives. Perhaps, the whole point of the series was to watch how the island changed Jack and in turn how he changed the others.

What did you think of last night’s finale? How did you vote and why?

After six years of mystery and confusion, ABC aired the final episode of “Lost” aptly titled, “The End.” It was two and a half hours long and featured many characters from the past and present returning to add closure to the series. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse attempted to give us a fitting end to a show that changed the landscape of television forever. Whether or not they succeeded is up for debate…

The Players:

Director: Jack Bender

Writers/Creator: Carlton Cuse, Damon Lindelof, Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams

Cast: Naveen Andrews, Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Daniel Dae Kim, Terry O’Quinn, Nestor Carbonell, Michael Emerson, Yunjin Kim, Jeff Fahey, Emilie de Ravin, Henry Ian Cusick, Sheila Kelley, Ken Leung, Elizabeth Mitchell, Dominic Monaghan, Rebecca Mader, Cynthia Watros, Fionnula Flanagan, L. Scott Caldwell, Francois Chau, Jeremy Davies, Maggie Grace, Sonya Walger, Dylan Minnette

The Show’s Plot:

“Lost” centers on the survivors of the ill fated Oceanic Flight 815 who crashed on a mysterious island. They fight the elements, the island’s mysteries, and each other while trying to survive in uncharted territory.

Title of this Week’s Episode: “The End” Season 6: Episode 17

Pseudo-Locke tries to destroy the island and all of its inhabitants, while Jack attempts to stop him. Kate and Sawyer make their way to the plane to get off the island with Frank, Miles, and Richard. And in the alternate reality the passengers of Flight 815 discover that their lives aren’t quite what they seem.

The Good:

Hurley the Protector: I called this last week when I said it was a little too predictable that Jack took over Jacob’s job in the second to last episode. Even Pseudo-Locke called him out and said he was an “obvious choice.” Hurley wasn’t a surprise because over the course of the season he’s been given a lot more responsibility and began taking on the leadership role.

Ben Finds His Purpose: Ben has always felt like the red-haired step-child of the island. He was never good enough to be Jacob’s right hand man so when Hurley asked him to be his number 2 it gave him the approval he desperately needed.

Familiar Faces: It was nice to see the old cast members return and reconnect with their significant others whether it be Shannon and Sayid or Sawyer and Juliet.

Jack’s the Beginning and the End: The show started with a few images we all know too well, with the most famous being Jack’s eye. In the end, he sacrificed himself to restore life to the island and in turn got to go to his “happy place.”

Vincent: Just because I’m a sucker for dogs I loved seeing Vincent again. His presence really made me think of the good old days and him laying at Jack’s side during the last scene was icing on the cake.

The Bad:

Unanswered Questions: The show’s executive producers stated that the series finale wouldn’t tie everything up in a nice bow and it didn’t. There were still a few things left unanswered like, where does the island come from? What was the light cave? What did the numbers mean? Why was Penny in the church but her brother Daniel wasn’t? What was Jacob? What was the Man in Black’s name? If these things were answered at some point let me know and I’ll stand corrected.

Overall:

I take it that the island was real and wasn’t purgatory like everyone thought, instead that honor went to the alternate reality, hence the living Christian. Jack’s dad confirmed that they were all dead but never gave specifics about when their deaths occurred. He just stated, “Everyone dies some time, kiddo. Some of them before you, some of them long after you … there is no now here.”

Is that the sentiment we’re supposed to take from this finale? That through the extraordinary experience they all shared, they were able to tear a hole in reality where they could be together forever? Interesting. It was definitely an emotional ending and one that will have people talking but I’m not sure if I’m OK with all the plot holes they left open. I’m all for leaving a little mystery but for a show like “Lost,” you can’t finish its run by basically saying, “In the end they all died (at some point).” That just seems a little….light.

Rating: 8.5/10

Show Airs: Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC

If you’re behind on any episodes of this season’s “Lost” we suggest you play catch up because the show is about to be over. The series finale airs on Sunday, May 23rd and the sh*t’s about to hit the fan. For the past few months producers and writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have been hinting at a big payoff during the final episode but quite frankly we’re sick of their teasing.

Thank God the recently unemployed Sarah Silverman took it upon herself to interview the duo and ask the tough questions to get us some real answers…

If they toured the “Sizzle” offices one more time we’re pretty sure our eyes would have started to bleed. That footage was obviously put on a loop and we just couldn’t take anymore. As for the “Lost” related questions, Cuse and Lindelof (as usual) came across as boring and their answers weren’t going anywhere. But then again this entire interview was “improvised” and meant to be a joke. Perhaps, Ms. Silverman should look for a new hobby and leave the “Lost” love to Jimmy Kimmel?

What do you think of Sarah Silverman’s interview with the executive producers of Lost? Did you get any real answers out of it?

Last night’s episode of “Lost” was entitled “What They Died For” and it was supposed to be the big set up for the series finale on Sunday. Before the show aired it seemed as if some truths were going to be revealed and we would be left with a huge cliffhanger leading us into “The End.” But instead of an entertaining hour of twists and turns I received confirmation of theories I had from months ago. No real surprises here…

The Players:

Director: Jack Bender

Writers/Creator:Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Elizabeth Sarnoff, Damon Lindelof, Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams

Cast: Naveen Andrews, Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Daniel Dae Kim, Terry O’Quinn, Nestor Carbonell, Michael Emerson, Yunjin Kim, Jeff Fahey, Emilie de Ravin, Mark Pelligrino, Alan Dale, Mira Furlan, Sheila Kelley, Tania Raymonde, Michelle Rodriguez, Dylan Minnette

The Show’s Plot:

“Lost” centers on the survivors of the ill fated Oceanic Flight 815 who crashed on a mysterious island. They fight the elements, the island’s mysteries, and each other while trying to survive in uncharted territory.

Title of this Week’s Episode: “What They Died For” Season 6: Episode 16

Jacob reveals himself to the rest of the castaways and finds a successor to protect the island. Pseudo-Locke joins forces with Ben to destroy Charles Widmore and tries to find Desmond before the others do. In the alternate timeline, Desmond arranges for the escape of Kate and Sayid, with Hurley and Ana Lucia’s help.

The Good:

Family Affair: The only good thing about this episode were the parts where we got to see all the families together. Jack, Claire, and his son along with Ben, Danielle, and Alex. It was also nice to see Danielle clean and dressed up for once and was it just us or was she flirting with Ben?

The Concert: We were left with the set up that something big was about to go down at the concert where Jack’s son will be playing. We also heard that his mother would be attending. I wonder if Julie Bowen will return to play his mom/Jack’s ex-wife or will it be someone else?

The So-So:

Jacob’s Plan: There was nothing that Jacob said in his speech to Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley that we couldn’t have picked up on ourselves. I think the only thing he really clarified was why Kate’s name was crossed out (her being a mother and all).

Pseudo-Locke’s Plan: The Man in Black wants to destroy the island? At first he wanted to leave and now he’s hell bent on blowing the whole thing up? Is this just a way for the writers to make sense of Desmond and his electromagnetic superpowers?

The Bad:

Jack Taking Jacob’s Place: Jack has always taken the leadership role among the castaways and we’re supposed to be shocked that he’s the one taking Jacob’s place? It would have been great if they decided to throw the past to the wind and give it to someone else. If it was going to be him all along what was the point of the other 3 people sitting there waiting in the wings?

Richard’s Death: So Richard got taken out by the Smoke Monster quick, fast, and in a hurry. These past few deaths are starting to feel rushed and aren’t really satisfying.

Loose Ends: Where’s Miles? Is Sayid really dead? What about Frank? I understand the series finale will be over 2 hours long but it feels like a lot of stuff will have to be resolved in a short amount of time.

Overall:

Last night’s episode was not a worthy build up to the series finale. There was nothing revealed that we didn’t already know or have an idea of. Everything was pretty predictable and if we’re getting this close to the end there should be some jaw-dropping revelations happening and there weren’t any.

Rating: 5/10

Show Airs: Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC

If you missed the latest episode of “Lost” we suggest you play catch up with our weekly review then come back and watch this awesome video. Late night host Jimmy Kimmel is an adamant fan of the series and for last night’s show he got actors Mark Pelligrino and Titus Welliver to reprise their roles as Jacob and the Man in Black for a parody featuring their characters and a certain game…

The most recent episode of “Lost” was entitled “Across the Sea” and it centered on the island’s age old inhabitants Jacob and the Man in Black. One of the things they focused on during the show was a makeshift chess game they played to occupy their time. Jimmy Kimmel thought that after a while it would get boring so he came up with Connect Four Million…

It’s good to know that we weren’t the only ones questioning the entertainment value of their game. Seriously, how could anyone play with rocks on a box for the rest of their lives? No wonder the Man in Black went crazy. Kudos to Kimmel for getting the actors who played the younger versions of the characters on the cover of the Connect Four Million box. He really got into the details.

What do you think of Lost’s Connect Four Million game?
