New DVD Releases: Nine, Leap Year, Tooth Fairy

A pretty solid week on DVD as nearly half-a-dozen honest-to-goodness features are immortalized in shiny-disced brilliance including, by my math, the first 2010 wide releases to appear on DVD! Congratulations, Leap Year and Tooth Fairy, the dubious honor is yours!

The rest of the releases are led by Nine, that movie that you heard a lot about last year until it actually came out and then seemed non-existent as well as Tetro, Francis Ford Coppola’s new film that you meant to see.

Nine

“The musical is back!”

Remember when Hugh Jackman wasted 9 minutes of the Oscars in 2009 with a flat musical number that proclaimed exactly that? Kind of remains to be seen, no?

Nine is another one of those “Garbage Can Films” – where a massive Oscar Campaign is at the ready, yet it all gets tossed once the movie fails with both critics and audiences alike.

But this one had more riding on it than one Oscar campaign. Nine was the torchbearer for the entire musical genre – a film that was set to reignite the fire that’d been smoldering since Mamma Mia! swept up audiences a couple summers ago.

Instead, it fell flat. Dreadfully flat. Flat to the point that the musical genre has been resuscitated on. . .TV.

That’s right! The musical is back in the form of great shows like “Glee” and “Treme“. So, once again, TV outdoes film. It’s an under reported story over the last ten years: TV beats film in just about every way it can. Now, the musical is on that list as well.

But if you prefer the features, you can buy this musical on DVD.

Leap Year

“I just know that there are a lot of people who will say it is the worst film of 2010.”

This isn’t my review, or my opinion. I didn’t even see this movie. You know who spoke that quote? Matthew Goode. The co-star of this film.

Not only did he give us that gem, he also went on to describe the movie as “turgid” and mentioned that he only did the movie because it filmed close to his home.

So, I suppose, in essence he sort of submarined the movie. But I see it completely differently. It would be amazing if Leap Year, rather than distancing itself from these comments, fully embraced them.

Imagine seeing that quote from Matthew Goode on the DVD Box. Then, you see it paired with a dozen bad reviews on the back. You’re in the store thinking, “Wow, not only did critics hate this movie, but the co-star thought it was terrible. I kinda have to see this.”

So rather than hoping that your rom-com catnip is alluring enough to make your DVD stand out from the pack, suddenly everyone who walks into Blockbuster see what may be the worst movie of all time staring them in the face. That morbid curiosity could actually make this a DVD hit.

Interview: Amy Adams For Leap Year

This weekend Amy Adams will headline Anand Tucker‘s latest film Leap Year, a romantic comedy that vaguely resembles her previous work Enchanted. This film doesn’t involve wicked queens, or fabled princes, but centers on a hopeless romantic who tries her best to fit love into her busy schedule. Adams stars as Anna, a real estate professional who’s ready to take the next step with her long term boyfriend. Being the independent, proactive woman that she is, her character takes it upon herself to try and initiate a proposal by flying to Ireland during an unofficial holiday, called Leap Day.

Adams’ character goes through a lot for love in the film, including falling face flat in mud, trekking along the country side in 4 inch heels, and fighting with cows in the middle of the road. When we encountered the actress at the Leap Year press conference, she was perky, polite, and more than willing to talk about her Irish shooting experience. She spoke about the food, the people, and most importantly how awesome it was to work with the charming and hilarious Matthew Goode…

Leap Year centers on a woman taking initiative and proposing to a man, what do you think of that concept? Would you ever consider doing something like that?

Amy: Yeah, it’s something I would consider. I thought about it. I waited for 6 years and I ultimately decided against it because I knew that that was important to my fiance now, I knew that was important to him. But I think if you have the type of relationship where it would be okay with the guy, I don’t see any problem with it.

In the film, your character Anna is very two sided. She’s a cut and dry realist, but a true romantic at heart. What part of her do you relate to the most?

Amy: I think I have both aspects of the character in me, that’s why I was attracted to the character because I tend to be really pragmatic but ultimately I tend to be more attracted to people who pull me into more spontaneity. I’ve learned that through surrender the best experiences of my life have happened. So one of the things that attracted me to this story was thinking I have control, losing control, and finding an amazing life for yourself.

So there’s a bit of spontaneity from you put into the character?

Amy: Am I spontaneous? No, I’m not. I mean I try to be, I work on it. I guess if you’re working on being spontaneous it’s not really being spontaneous. I think I just answered it. Probably not as much as I’d like to be.

A lot of the romantic comedies these days feature very high powered women learning how to take it slow. Why do you think audiences are responding so well to that premise?

Amy: I think because women are taking on more responsibility in the workplace and at home and we’re really trying to have it all. I think it’s very relatable to women and men today to see that in film.

In the movie you wear high heels in almost every scene, even the ones where you were climbing mountains so I wanted to ask you about your shoes. How was it wearing stilettos when so much physicality is involved, and did you have any input on what shoes you wore?

Amy: I did. I did have input. The shot was very specific because I needed a strap. Actually I love high heels and I wear them a lot. So I hate to say it’s easy cause it definitely was a struggle but it wasn’t like learning to walk. But going up the hill was very challenging with the grassy steps and the railroads. I cut my foot at one point and it was really hard cause I had to, you know.

How was it working with Matthew Goode?

He’s great. You guys will see, he’s so charming and he’s funny and he’s smart and he brought so much to this role. He really just enjoyed playing Declan and that was so much fun. I loved the character of Declan so he was absolutely perfect in it.

Can you talk a little about the directing process? Did the director give you some room to do what you wanted or was the script pretty straight forward?

Amy: It totally depended on the scene. There were definitely scenes where we had a lot of room to improv and there were some scenes that were more time specific, you’re a little more constrained but he definitely allowed for a lot of improvisation. Like the scene with the cows. You kind of have to be loose with that, when you’re working with cows and they don’t cooperate. As much as you try to train a cow they’re not programmed to cooperate. He was really great on his feet in dealing with the elements in Ireland. We were always outside with rain and wind and sunny when it was supposed to be raining, raining when it was supposed to be sunny. So we really had to be really loose and I think that was something I took from the film, just loosening up all around.

How important was it working on location with this storyline? Did it help your performance?

Amy: Well it affected it a lot, especially being in Ireland. I really started to understand being able to surrender your entire life to this place and being able to fall in love with a place and and with the people of the place because Ireland really has that quality. They’re just so welcoming and you feel like it’s home. Being in Ireland really helped me understand Anna’s pull towards everything. So I think it was really important. it would have been harder to do in another location.

What did you get into during your down time?

Amy: All sorts of things. I walked everywhere in Dublin. It’s a great walking city. I went to the organic farmers market, I went to the pubs and ate great meals and met awesome people. We would have dinners every once in a while and we would cook at different people’s houses. It’s just very homey in Ireland and very comforting, comfortable. Lot’s of fire places with peat moss fires.

Do you have any other films coming out this year or the next?

Amy: Well, I just finished The Fighter, with David O. Russell. I’m taking some time off right now.

How long will you be out of commission?

Amy: I’m not sure. Probably till next summer.

What was it like working with David O. Russell?

Amy: It was awesome, I loved it.

What character did you play?

Amy: I play Mark Wahlberg‘s characters girlfriend whose kind of a straight forward, a little bit rough around the edges Boston girl.

What type of things do you look for in a project? What attracts you? Is it the stories, the characters, or the director?

Amy: I think there’s different things that attract me to each project. Sometimes it’s the director, sometimes it’s just specifically the story sometimes it’s specifically the character. When I look, it’s usually a combination of those things together. Sometimes it’s the mood that I’m in. I feel like, “Oh gosh, I just worked on this really heavy drama, I just need to have fun and let loose.” So it’s different things that drives my decision.

Is there a story you’d like to bring to the big screen and develop yourself?

Amy: Yeah, I’m actually starting to produce more and be involved more in development. I’m looking forward to that and to try that out and see because I really enjoy the creative process of bringing a movie to life. I look forward to being more involved.

Leap Year debuts in theaters nationwide on December 8, 2010.

Movie Releases: Daybreakers, Youth in Revolt, Leap Year…

This week in movies is a little bit on the weak side. The vampire flick starring Ethan Hawke, Daybreakers, hits theaters. The movie is about a society of vampires that farm humans for their blood, except something goes terribly wrong. The movie hasn’t gotten great reviews, but it might fit under the category of “watchable.” The loveably-awkward Michael Cera’s new movie, Youth in Revolt, about a nerdy guy who is trying to get the hot girl to like him. It should be wildly cliched, completely-predictable, and enjoyable. Then we have the romantic comedy, starring Amy Adams, Leap Year. Tim Allen and Mathew Broderick both have limited release movies coming out this week with Crazy on the Outside and Wonderful World, respectively.

Oscar nominee Amy Adams once again takes on the romantic comedy genre with her latest film, Leap Year. It’s a mix of fantasy, charm, and bitter reality all rolled into one. Imagine her character Giselle from Enchanted with a more expensive wardrobe, but the same naive view on relationships. Leap Year offers the opposites attract scenario with a different location, and a few new faces. Take a look at one of the first rom-coms of 2010…

The Plot:

Leap Year centers on the uptight and extremely professional couple of Anna and Jeremy. While contemplating the next step of their relationship Anna notices that Jeremy isn’t moving quickly enough in the marriage department so she decides to take matters into her own hands. Every four years (during a leap year) on February 29th, women from all over flock to Ireland to pop the question to their long time beaus.

Anna decides to participate in the tradition but finds herself lost and on the opposite side of the country. She meets and hires a reluctant bartender named Declan (Goode), to take her to Dublin so she can make it before the special date. During their trip the unlikely duo’s general dislike for one another turns into genuine love. By the time Anna finds Jeremy, it’s unclear whether or not he’s the man she truly wants to be with.

The Good:

Matthew Goode: Hands down, Goode’s performance as Declan was the best part of this film. On paper, the character comes across as arrogant, selfish, and mean spirited, but somehow the actor turns him into Prince Charming. Not to mention Goode’s spot on Irish accent, which was pitch perfect. His dialect was so on point that it’s hard to believe that underneath it all he’s really British.
Location: Ireland was a secondary character in Leap Year, and got just as much screen time as the actors. After watching this film you’ll want to book a trip overseas to see what the country has to offer. There were plenty of beautiful shots that highlighted the landscape as well as a few historical ruins that were written into the plot.
Set Design: The design of Anna and Jeremy’s apartment as well as Declan’s pub matched perfectly with their characters. They were physical manifestations of what the three of them represented. The urban high rise apartment was technically beautiful, but cold and superficial much like Anna’s relationship. Declan’s pub was shabby (not chic), and showed a lack of care on his part, which definitely matched his closed outlook on life.

The Bad:

The Underuse of John Lithgow: Why cast someone as amazing as John Lithgow in a film if you’re only going to use him for a cameo? He stars as Anna’s father, and is belittled to a drunk who spews tales of the “good ‘ol days.” The actor got more air time in the trailer than he did in the film, and that’s sad considering his impressive resume that spans over thirty years.
Story: The opposites attract theme has been used in movies, television, and plays since their inception. This film does nothing to alter that story to make it more interesting. They just changed the location to Ireland, and threw in the concept of women proposing marriage on a mystical day and that was it.

Overall:

Leap Year is a typical rom-com that falls in line with what we’ve all seen before. It doesn’t serve you with a grand story that will tug at your heart strings or stay with you for the rest of your life. It’s mediocre in every sense of the word. If you are interested in seeing a diabetically sweet tale of unexpected love, that plays into every stereotype known to man, give Leap Year a shot.

Leap Year opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, January 8, 2010.

Several promotional photos have been released for the upcoming Amy Adams film, Leap Year. It’s a romantic comedy that co-stars Matthew Goode and Adam Scott in an international love triangle. The film will debut a month before the Valentine’s Day rush in January, so its rom-com competition won’t be that steep.

But airplanes, weather and fate leave Anna stranded on the other side of Ireland, and she must enlist the help of handsome and surly Declan (Matthew Goode) to get her across the country. As Anna and Declan bicker across the Emerald Isle, they discover that the road to love can take you to very unexpected places.

Leap Year is directed by Anand Tucker from a screenplay written by Harry Elfont & Deborah Kaplan, and will hit theaters on January 8, 2010. Funny man Adam Scott typically plays the douche bag in everything, but here he’ll be a straight laced doctor, opposite Goode’s nonchalant bar tender. Between these two who will Amy choose?

A while ago we reported that Amy Adams was cast in a romantic comedy entitled Leap Year opposite, Watchmen star Matthew Goode. Just today the first trailer for the film has debuted online as well as the official poster that features both actors front and center. Leap Year is directed by Anand Tucker and co-stars Adam Scott and John Lithgow.

Does it bother anyone that this trailer features a few scenes taken directly out of The Proposal? This movie has a ridiculously generic plot, but likable actors, which will probably save it in the end. Leap Year is set to hit theaters early next year on January 8, 2010.

Adam Scott Joins Amy Adams and Matthew Goode in Leap Year

If you haven’t been informed of the casting bits surrounding the upcoming romantic comedy Leap Year, I’m about to break it down. Last month Variety reported that Watchmen alum Matthew Goode had been cast in the film to star opposite, Amy Adams. Adams will play a woman who travels to Ireland to find her boyfriend. Once she’s there she plans on proposing to him, but due to bad weather she gets lost and needs help from a native, cue Goode. Goode will play an Irish innkeeper who will be Adam’s cross-country guide. Who will play the role of the missing boyfriend you ask? According to Cinemablend, Adam Scott that’s who!

Adam Scott has just signed on to co-star in Leap Year, and will join Goode and Adams when the film starts shooting on location this month. If you don’t recognized Scott’s name you’d probably know his face. He’s been around for a long time, with supporting roles in Step Brothers, Knocked Up, and most recently The Great Buck Howard. He is an amazing actor and has great comedic timing. He has that witty, smart ass type of delivery that everyone tries to pull of but can’t. I didn’t want to go back this far, but he played Griff during the last high school year of the TV series Boy Meets World. Does that ring a bell?

Leap Year, will be directed by Anand Tucker with a script written by Harry Elfont and Doug Kaplan. Hopefully this movie will give people and opportunity to see Matthew Goode in a different capacity than what was shown in Watchmen. That was his first big picture, and a lot of people were turned off by his performance. It didn’t bother me as much, but to each his own.

Leap Year Scores a Second Oscar Nominated Talent Simon Beaufoy

This is quite a year for Simon Beaufoy. Last year we announced that Anand Tucker, the director for Shopgirl, would be directing Amy Adams in the upcoming romantic comedy Leap Year for Spyglass. Now they’ve adding English Simon Beaufoy’s, the writer for the wildly popular Slumdog Millionaire to the film. It looks like this is going to be one hell of a romantic comedy with two current Oscar nominated filmmakers.

Leap Year is the story about an uptight women (Adam) who travels to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on leap day, February 29th, because of an Irish tradition that says that any man who receives a marriage proposal on that day has to say yes. When weather derails her trip, she enlists the help of a surly Irish innkeeper to make an unexpected cross-country trek to pull off the perfect proposal in time.

This sounds like an incredible leap (pun intended) for Beaufoy. Going from Slumdog to quirky romantic comedy. But as we know from his previous work on The Full Monty and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, he knows how to take the “already been done” and make it into something amazing. And then they have Amy Adams to back whatever genius he writes.

This may actually be a wedding movie I go and see!

Looks like Anand Tucker, the director for Shopgirl, will be directing Amy Adams in the upcoming romantic comedy Leap Year for Spyglass.

The film was written by the comedy duo Harry Elfont and Deb Kaplan (Made of Honor, Can’t Hardly Wait) and tells the story of a woman who travels to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on leap day, Feb. 29, because of an Irish tradition that says that any man who receives a marriage proposal on that day has to say yes.

I’m sure every problem that could possibly happen on the way, will. And Amy Adams will be her adorable self the entire time.

Production is set to start in March 2009, on location in Ireland.
