Mindy Kaling Lands TV Show: The awesome Mindy Kaling, Kelly from “The Office“, has landed a major gig with Fox. According to Deadline, the studio has given the green light to her single-camera comedy. The show will center around Kaling as a young “Bridget Jones-type” Ob/Gyn doctor balancing her personal and professional life. The only bad news is, if Fox picks up the series, Kaling will no longer be coming back to “The Office”. Oh well!
Katy Perry 3D: Katy Perry is following in Justin Bieber‘s footsteps. The pop sensation might be headed to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Paramount has already started the dealmaking with Perry’s camp to create a documentary-style 3D film centered around the colorful singer.
Drunk Harry Potter: In recent years Daniel Radcliffe has been pretty vocal about his previous drinking problem. Well, this week he brought the subject up again during an interview with Heat Magazine, and told them that while he never drank on the Harry Potter set, he did go into work drunk. Next time we watch one of the Potter films, we’ll be trying to figure out if he’s hammered or not. Read the whole interview at Heat Magazine.
Now on VOD: This week a new film titled, After Fall, Winter hit VOD. The film is described a “dangerous, sexy, poignant, and at times [darkly] funny story” about two people looking for love. Chris Rock To Mary Melissa McCarthy: Chris Rock told the L.A. Times this week that he’s writing a new script in which he and Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy play a “Jerry Springer couple.” We don’t know about you, but that something we’d love to see.

This week Paramount acquired the rights to turn the famous Montreal-based circus Cirque du Soleil into a 3D movie… and thankfully, James Cameron, who is a master of the technology, has come aboard as producer. Also in the news this week is Kevin Smith: the indie director will be heading back to the big screen forone night, just to answer our questions. The Iron Lady also returned to theaters today for a normal run, and we’ve got news on the critically acclaimed picture. Catch up below.

The Iron Lady On Moviefone: The Iron Lady played at a theater one week so that its star, Meryl Streep, could qualify for the Oscars. Today the bio-pic based on the life of former U.K. Prime minister Margaret Thatcher returns to the big screen for a regular run. Cirque du Soleil Coming To Theaters In 3D: This year you’ll get to experience Cirque du Soleil in 3D. Paramount has acquired the rights to the Montreal-based circus. James Cameron is on board to produce, and Andrew Adamsom, who helmed Shrek and the Narnia franchise is directing.

Kevin Smith’s Hit Somebody Now One Big Movie

Kevin Smith has promised or threatened that Hit Somebody would be his last film. He’s shared pages of the script with readers, but (in accordance with his latest activities) he’s revealed on Twitter some of the latest developments. Once planned to be a two-film project, Smith has reduced his scale and brought it back to one long movie, and says shooting should start this summer with a 2013 Sundance launch.

Sundance has been a special place for Smith, as it’s where his career began with Clerks, but also where he generated a firestorm of publicity when – instead of auctioning off his picture Red State to the highest bidder – he decided to self-distribute and go on a months-long speaking and showing engagement with the film. After the engagement, the film was released on home video and is currently on Netflix Instant.

With Red State Smith proved he has enough of a fan base to turn a profit outside of the system, even if much of his recent publicity has skewed negative. As Hit Somebody is planned to be his last film, that embrace of finality (if he really does quit, you never know) could spark Smith in an interesting enough creative direction to win over some of his detractors. That said, few figures in modern cinema are as polarizing.

Kevin Smith Launches Public Tirade Against Independent Spirit Awards For Not Nominating ‘Red State’

Kevin Smith is an outspoken guy—between his Twitter account and his podcasting network (let alone his scatologically-inclined films), Smith isn’t afraid to publicly lash out at those he feels have wronged him, whether it’s Bruce Willis, an airline that won’t accommodate heavyset passengers, or just random folks who snipe at him on Twitter. Despite that history of loquacious lashing, Smith raised a few eyebrows earlier this week when, upon learning that no one in his most recent film, the horror-drama-siege film Red State, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

Now, it’s easy to understand that a director would be passionate about his work, especially a guy like Smith, who purposefully shot Red State outside of the major studio system to create a truly independent film. The problem is, though, that reviews of the film itself were mixed, suggesting the film might not the most awards-worthy flick in recent memory. Smith, however, had different ideas on Twitter:

How the f*** did the @SpiritAwards NOT nominate Michael Parks? Nor John Goodman? Nor Melissa Leo? F*** your idiotic organization. #FakeIndie

As you can see, Smith is a director who stands behind his actors. However, this tweet comes off as an entitled, childish rant at best, and a desperate publicity stunt at worst. Come on, Smith, you’re better—and far funnier—than this.

With a passing as monumental as Steve Jobs, word is coming from many famous people their thoughts on the man and his work. Steven Spielberg said “Steve Jobs was the greatest inventor since Thomas Edison. He put the world at our fingertips.” And with Twitter it’s been easy for celebrities to share their reactions.

Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted “Steve lived the California Dream every day of his life and he changed the world and inspired all of us.” while Paris Hilton said “So sad to hear about Steve Jobs. He was a genius and one of the most innovative people on earth. He changed the world in so many ways.” The event prompted a record-breaking amount of tweets, at the rate of 10,000 per second, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kevin Smith wrote “Steve Jobs! Thanks for never settling for the way things were during a life you spent showing us how things could be. O Captain! My captain!” While Ashton Kutcher added “I never thought I could be so busted up about the loss of someone I never met” Roger Ebert noted a sentiment many expressed: “I’m reading about the loss of Steve Jobs on the 17th Macintosh I’ve owned.” Albert Brooks added “Had the pleasure of working for him and knowing him. He was our Edison. R.I.P. Steve Jobs.”

Bono, reached for comment by MTV due to U2′s help in selling the iPod, said “Steve told me as proud as he was of Apple and Pixar, his real pride was his family. He was a thoughtful and tender father, and loved nothing more than hanging out in the house with his belle Laurene and the kids. I already miss him … one of a very small group of anarchic Americans who through technology literally invented the 21st century. We will all miss the hardware software Elvis.”

Kevin Smith To Host Daily Talk Show

Jeez—this guy really, really likes to talk. As film directing seems to be further and further from his mind, news broke today that Kevin Smith—director of films such as Clerks, Chasing Amy, Cop Out, and Red State—is set to host his own talk show. Yes, you read that right—Kevin Smith is going to host a talk show.

According to Vulture, Smith is “developing a daily, half-hour, syndicated talk show that would blend celebrity chat and comedy.”

Work has already begun on a pilot for the potential talker, with Smith asking his legion of Twitter fans Tuesday to e-mail him if they want to be in the audience. So just what would a Kevin Smith talk show look like? Vulture got its hands on an e-mail the show’s booking staff has been sending to potential guests, and it provides a pretty good idea of what’s brewing.

According to the message, Smith’s reps are telling celebs that the tentatively titled Kevin Smith Project will be “a daily 30-minute entertainment talk show for syndication … The idea is a Regis and Kelly talk show at the opposite end of the day for the opposite kind of audience — the 12-34 demo. Kevin and his co-host will talk water-cooler topics at the top of the show, followed by a celebrity interview and a comedy segment from the field (a la The Daily Show). Each show will feature one celebrity interview.”

While Smith’s fame isn’t exactly mainstream—so who knows how many people will actually tune into this thing—Smith has shown himself to be a more adept public speaker than director of late, and his spoken-word shows are pretty hilarious. File this under “cautiously optimistic.”

Comic-Con 2011: Kevin Smith Talks Red State – Reminds Me Why I Love My Job

Earlier this year at Sundance Film Festival, Kevin Smith shocked everyone with his film Red State (the camera is finally off the sticks! And there are no talking heads in this bad-boy), as well as with his own personal, live performance that went along with it. Some people called it a stunt, some people questioned why he had called “the auction” when he had no intent on selling it, members of the press got pissy because he wouldn’t do a press conference like everyone else, others wondered if it was true if Harvey Weinstein was ever in the building… and rightly so.

There was a lot going on that day and quite obviously, a lot that none of us knew about. We were seeing the results of Kevin Smith developing into a new kind of filmmaker and finally getting to the point where he was able to separate from his father figure Harvey Weinstein, and tell him to fuck off. It’s only now that we really understand exactly how far Smith has come. He is currently part of the group of pioneers (Robert Rodriguez has something similar going on at Comic-Con) that are forging the way forward for independent filmmakers in a style that I’ve been in awe of since Sundance. Indie filmmakers have been trying to release their films like Smith, but it took someone ballsy and bold enough and with an established name to really break new ground.

Smith cleared up a lot of questions as to what was really going on between him and the Weinsteins before, during and after Sundance and why he did a lot of the things that it he did to promote it. Some of them worked, some he didn’t need, all of the added to the fun. Of course, he told us (as you can see in the video below) about him developing to courage to do this in a quite long albeit entertaining story that went back much further than we all knew. He was extremely open and honest about his wounds and expressed how personal the whole experience was to him. After all, Harvey brought him up and Smith even named his production company “The Harvey Boys” after him. only to later be completely insulted by him during his big moment. Though there was a silver-lining. By Harvey doing that, Smith no longer was able to rest on a production company and lean on Harvey, he had to step up his game and in doing so has helped him reach a new level as a filmmaker and also as a distributor for indie films.

He spoke to us for about 40 minutes at was was supposed to be a 15 minute, intimate “meet and greet” with the press yesterday at the Movies on Demand center, where he also announced that Red State would in fact he available on MOD and other VOD platforms on September 1st, before the film is released in theaters. Directly after that the film will have a short release in theaters (if you’re in LA, it will be at the New Bev) and a short time after that it will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Some people think that without a huge theatrical run that a film is not a success, but the truth is, theatrical runs are mainly about ego, not profits or viewers. It takes more money than most films can ever make back just to get it into theaters and it costs more than most viewers can afford. Theatrical runs really make very little sense for artistic, risky, lower budget films like Red State (and MANY others). By taking the film to the people via VOD and DVD, while at the same time having it offered for those cinefiles that already love and follow Kevin Smith on Twitter, he’ll reach his audience without spending a dime — there’s no need to market to the people who will already they seek it out. AND, the idea of taking it on tour with Smith doing Q&A’s gives the audience something more to be excited about, again without him having to spend money.

Everything about this film, from the way that this film was made to how he’s getting it to the people, shows that it’s not about ego, but about working with the way that indie film is going and getting his film in front of viewers for a reasonable price. THIS, is the future of great indie cinema and makes the $5 million viable once again! it also poses a threat for bigger films, because if we can get GREAT films at home, for less, why would be pay more — but that’s a discussion for another day.

One of the most exciting things that Smith talked about was something that I have just learned (on a much smaller scale) with my film Do Not Disturb about marketing a film. A lot of people are tempted to say “leave it to the professionals” but “they” don’t always know what’s best and sometimes “they” make some stupid choices (Ex: Kevin Smith ad on Lifetime for Women). Without spending a dime and giving into the system (which would mean that he would have to make back over $40 million to recoup his $5 million that the movie cost to make), he would use his own voice and time to spread the word and get his film in front of people without wasting millions of dollars. Because of that, he’s already making money.

Now, not any indie filmmaker has his reach nor his ability to front the kind of money to do the things he’s done, BUT by movies of this caliber with filmmakers of his level doing what he’s doing, it will help to change the way that indie films and therefore mainstream films get to the public. It’s not just about the big studios anymore. It’s about the films and the filmmakers, or at least headed in that direction…

We also highly recommend that you join us in watching Smith speaking in Hall H tonight at 5:45. I’m sure he’ll speak more on this topic and just about anything else he feels like. Kevin Smith To Launch Comic Book Store Reality Show On AMC

Comic book nerds, begin thy frothing at the mouth—in addition to having just about every single DC and Marvel comic book property adapted into multi-platform film franchises (for the love of God, even Ant-Man is getting a movie), you now may be able to star in your own comic book reality TV show. If you live in New Jersey. And if you shop at Kevin Smith’s comic book store, The Secret Stash. And if you don’t mind airing on AMC. And if you don’t mind, you know, appearing kinda dorky for arguing as to whether or not the Avengers Tower or Avengers Mansion is a better hideout for our favorite group of superheroes (I swear, I swear, I swear that I had to look that up to make the reference).

According to the AV Club, Kevin Smith is indeed launching a reality TV show centered around his comic book store (which is kind of a nice commercial for the business, no?), “that will follow the day-to-day lives and naturally quippy, pop culture-referencing dialogues of employees and customers inside his New Jersey comic book store, The Secret Stash… And today Smith revealed on Twitter that he already had a network lined up to air the thing in AMC, an announcement that was later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.”

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve some Spider-Man tights I need to be fitted for, and this plane ticket to Red Bank ain’t gonna buy itself.

Kevin Smith Offers a Taste of Hit Somebody and His Working Process

Writer/Director/Producer/Actor/Podcaster/Stoner/Twitter Aficionado Kevin Smith is currently on his nationwide tour with his latest film Red State, and has been talking about how his next film Hit Somebody will be his last. When asked about John Goodman’s role in the next film via Twitter, Smith spoke well of Goodman’s role and decided to post a scene from the film on his website. For those interested in the scripting process, this would be a good page to save and copy for later comparison.

This is the text as currently written, and depending on the day, the actors and how many revisions the script goes through this scene could very well never be filmed, or turn into something different. Smith has talked in the past about how religious he is about the words he writes, and so this pass – though Smith stresses this is a work-in-progress – could be fairly close to the finished product. If nothing else, this gives a interesting perspective on how things change or don’t in the process of making a film.

The response to Red State has seemed to jell since Sundance. His fans like it, and almost everyone else calls it a good rough draft of an idea, but either an uneven or not very good finished product, with the film stopping cold for a talky and lengthy sermon. Since the film was self-financed and this tour is part of his way of making it profitable, it will be interesting to see if this is a workable business model for his next film.

This plan could be followed again or dismissed just as readily – Smith has been known to turn on his films if they are poorly received, even if he can’t take their criticisms (Smith now beats up on Cop Out, even though he rankled at the derision it took from critics), so his idea of self-releasing could just as easily be thrown under the proverbial tour bus.

Regardless, Smith has proved profitable on every venture, so the only thing that would hold up Hit Somebody‘s production is Smith’s schedule. Here is a chance to catch a glimpse of what’s coming next.

Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Manages To Offend The Westboro Baptist Church

Wow. Say what you will about the guy’s decision to auction off the distribution rights to his new horror film Red State to himself at Sundance, but you’ve got to give Kevin Smith one thing—if Red State is able to offend the Westboro Baptist Church (those lovely religious protestors of “God Hates F*gs, God Hates Israel, God Hates the Army, God Hates America” and more fame), he’s doing something right.

The film, which was inspired by members of charming little church, was screened in Kansas City over the weekend (as Smith has taken the film on the road for a screening/ Q+A tour to raise funds for Red State’s wide release in October), where, according to The AV Club, “Megan and Jael Phelps—Fred Phelps’ granddaughters and two of the younger, more dynamic members of the “God Hates F*gs” Family that the film is based on—who Smith promised would be there to both protest Red State beforehand, as well as appear on stage afterward to offer their reviews.” Or, as Smith put it, “This is gonna be like watching Star Wars with Darth Vader right there in the audience!”

Well, not so much. Turns out the hateful hollyrollers bailed on the film about fifteen minutes in—claiming it was “filth,” but Smith managed to speak to ex-members of the church during the Q+A. While this may not sound like it amounts to much, even the smallest, most meager example of pissing off the Westboro Baptist Church is worth smiling and applauding. If you disagree, check this out.

Kevin Smith Screens Red State for NYPD as a ‘Sorry’ for Cop Out

Giving back to those you mocked! If there’s one thing Kevin Smith is good at, it’s owning up to his past and makings amends (we’ll see how that goes with distributors for his next film). This time around he’s got to say sorry to the NYPD for his portrayal of them in his last film Cop Out. Smith announced today that he will be giving the New York Police Department tickets to attend the first date of his national Red State Tour at Radio City Music Hall on March 5, 2011.

Smith is calling it a “free date night for the city’s finest,” I’m not sure how Police Officers will respond to a date offer from Smith especially in a film about “Three boys go into the woods to find sex. Instead, they find God” BUT the tickets for the Radio City Music Hall screening of the film are one hot ticket, so hopefully they’ll take him up on it. It would be quite funny if they all took the block of tickets reserved for them and their significant others and eBayed them.

Smith said, “I can’t think of a better way to say ‘I’m Sorry’ for Cop Out than to give tickets to the New York Police Department.” He also added that if they attend, “It will be the safest premiere on the planet.”

The Red State Tour kicks off in New York City on March 5, 2011 before visiting 16 cities around the country. The tour features a screening of Red State starring Michael Parks, John Goodman and Melissa Leo, and of course will be followed by a live appearance from Kevin Smith where he will discuss the film — prepare to settle in for a while.
