Henry’s Crime: Movie Review

This week in theaters is Henry’s Crime, a sweet, cops and robbers film, with a bit of a romantic -omedy edge hits theaters with Keanu Reeves and Vera Farmiga. All I can say is that if you can find it, you should see it. It’s a sweet film, with a lot of interesting twists that gives it, it’s own edge in the sea of mundane cinema.

The Plot:

Henry’s Crime centers on a man who’s down on his luck, who joins a play in order to successfully pull off a bank heist. It sounds ridiculous, but there’s more. He falls in love with his leading lady all the while getting advice from a convict who happens to really love prison.

The Good:

Vera Farmiga: She seems to be the woman to go to when you want a strong female to play the cliched male role but as a hot lady. She’s wonderfully insane and risks being completely unlikable (which is why she’s so interesting to watch and ironically quite likable) and really takes the comedy of this role as seriously as any major drama she’s impressed us in before.
It’s Cute: For such a convoluted plot, there are a number of rather sweet, and for lack of a better word, cute moments throughout the film that really make you side with it even in the most insane of situations.
The Last Line: Don’t worry! I won’t give it away, but it was a nice touch and much like the characters in the film are saying “damn the man” to the police force, this ending does the same to the cliched Hollywood ending — sometimes not giving us the answer gives us everything we need.
Mocking a Production: Film/theater — they’re different but the people who make them are equally as crazy and the filmmakers obviously know this. It was nice to see the insanity and behind the scenes banter portrayed in such a humorous and at times sadly realistic way.

The Middle:

Keanu Reeves: When in the right role, he’s amazing. This was ALMOST the perfect role for him. The simple, sweet character fit him perfectly, it’s just hard to believe that someone who would go through with such an elaborate plan wouldn’t have some kind of twist or dark side. Maybe that’s a writer/director choice, or maybe that’s a lack of character — either way, I was always waiting for that other shoe to drop and was slightly disappointed when it didn’t — though it did make me ponder and think more about his character!

The Bad:

Not Everything Makes Sense: There were definitely a few moments where your brain had to stretch in order for some concepts to fully work. Not enough to ruin the film or leave one disappointed, but they were there.
The Pace: There were a few moments where the pace felt a little slow and this might have been helped by a score. From what I can find, the film only had songs and a music supervisor, no composer, and it definitely could have been helped with a little bit of original music to keep it flowing.

Overall:

It was a pleasent, fun film with a few moments of fine acting and a couple of chuckles. It’s any easy watch if you’re looking for something relaxing and not to emotionally strenuous or taxing, and it’s not without its clever moments that will keep you engaged.

Rating: 7/10

Keanu Reeves Claims That ‘Bill And Ted 3′ Is Coming Soon

Well, dudes, those who have been waiting the long 20 years (good lord, it’s really been that long) to see what the future holds in store for William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq and Ted “Theodore” Logan might not have to wait much longer—according to Keanu Reeves, the Bill and Ted 3 script that you’ve been clamoring for is about six weeks away from completion.

According to ComingSoon, Reeves stated that the new film ties in directly to the end of Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey:

“When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn’t happened… So they’ve now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there’s an element of time and they have to go back.”

So there you—because what the world needs now is for Hollywood to make a sequel to a sequel that was released two decades ago to a film franchise that is probably best left untouched and untainted by further cash-ins. And besides, a Bill and Ted movie without George Carlin? Blasphemy! Blasphemy, I say!

Four Actors Join Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin

Do you remember hearing about Keanu Reeves starring in an epic Asian drama? You don’t? Does the name 47 Ronin sound familiar to you? Still nothing? OK, here’s the deal: a couple years ago Reeves started developing a feature film based on a famous story about a group of Japanese samurais. The project went through its fair share of pitfalls but the actor has stayed on board and according to Variety, the film is picking up speed.

The trade reports that four actors have joined the cast of 47 Ronin, and they include Tadanobu Asano, Rinko Kikuchi, Hiroyuki Sanada and Kou Shibasaki. Most of these actors aren’t recognizable to American audiences. The only one we’re familiar with is Hiroyuki Sanada, and that’s because he appeared on the final season of “Lost” where he played Dogen. Everyone else is a blank slate to us.

In the film Reeves will play the lead role, which was written with him in mind by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini. The plot will center on a band of samurai swordsmen who avenge the death of their master in 18th century Japan.

Updated: Keanu Reeves Says More Matrix Sequels Could in the Future?

***Update: This news has been reported as false. According to The Playlist, Reeves reps have denied the following statements by the actor. Therefore, we can chalk this one up to being another hoax.***

Over the past few years, we’ve seen our fair share of unexpected sequels. Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, Live Free or Die Hard, and Rocky Balboa are just a few films that have gone where other franchises wouldn’t dare go. They all went past the trilogy mark, and now we’re hearing reports that another popular film series could follow in their footsteps. Are you interested in seeing The Matrix Part 4 and 5?

Over at AICN, they received some important news from a reader called “El Nino” regarding a key note speech Keanu Reeves gave at The London School of Performing Arts. It was there that he dropped the bomb that The Wachowskis already have the layout for a fourth and fifth film in The Matrix series. Here’s what a portion of the email revealed:

Says he met the Wachowskis… for lunch over Christmas, and stated that they had completed work on a two-picture script treatments that would see him return to the world of the matrix as Neo. Says the Wachowskis have met with Jim Cameron to discuss the pro’s and con’s of 3D and are looking to deliver something which has never been seen again. Keanu stated that he still has an obligation to the fans to deliver a movie worthy of the title “The Matrix” and he swears this time that the treatment will truly revolutionize the action genre like the first movie. Wachowskis are working on a movie called “Cloud Atlas” at the moment, once that concludes they will talk again.

To be honest, we don’t need more from The Matrix. Revolutions was God-awful and Reloaded was all show and no pay off…literally. Do you remember the ending to that film? Let it go people.

Keanu Reeves and Vera Farmiga in Henry’s Crime Movie Trailer

The first trailer has been released for Keanu Reeves’ dark comedy Henry’s Crime. The film centers on a robbery and prison but it’s a lot lighter than we thought it would be. There’s an unsuspecting romance thrown into the plot. Besides Reeves, the film features performances by Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga and James Caan, who plays the typical veteran crook role. Check out the trailer…

The film is directed by Malcolm Venville, and the script was written by Sacha Gervasi, who recently produced and directed Anvil! The Story of Anvil. No release date has been announced as of yet, but the film did debut at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The reviews weren’t horrible so that means that it might see the light of day. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the cast.

Keanu Reeves’ 47 Ronin Will Be in 3D

We’ve got news that another 3D film is headed our way. Are you excited because we’re not! According to Universal Pictures the developing Carl Erik Rinsch’s film 47 Ronin will be produced and released in 3D. If you’re asking yourself what the hell is 47 Ronin, it’s a samurai flick that has Neo — we mean Keanu Reeves attached to star.

47 Ronin centers on a band of samurai swordsmen who avenge the death of their master in 18th century Japan. Reeves will play one of the swordsman in the group who are revered in Japan for their revenge attack on December 14, 1702. “The film will tell a stylized version of the story, mixing fantasy elements of the sort seen in The Lord of the Rings films, with gritty battle scenes akin to those in films such as Gladiator.”

Samurais in 3D sounds like a dangerous combination that might have worked five years ago. We feel that by the time this film hits theaters audiences will have had enough of the trend. Hell, audiences have had enough of it now.

Keanu Reeves Wants More Excellent Adventures with Bill and Ted

Rumors regarding a third installment of the cult favorite Bill & Ted always rear their ugly head every few years, and this time they’re fueled by Keanu Reeves. The two films entitled Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey shot Reeves into the limelight and made him a star. Over 20 years later the actor confesses that he’s interested in getting the cast back together for one last mid-life crisis hurrah.

While speaking to MTV News in a recent interview, Reeves was asked about whether or not he would be open to making the Bill & Ted saga a trilogy.

“We’re trying. Alex and I are still friends and we’re talking, and we’re talking to Chris and Ed. They’re going to try and see if they can write something. To me, I’d love to play the role. I’d love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again. We’ll see what they do. If it’s a film that can stand up on its own, and I’m meeting people now, they’ve shown the film to their kids. We just seek to entertain, and if that could be something that could be worthwhile on its own…”

Both Reeves and Alex Winter are well into their forties so we’re not sure what type of “adventures” they could get into this time around. Plus, we’re kind of scared to see what they would look like now. Do they have kids and wives or are they still in their parent’s basements doing air guitar while wearing lots of flannel?

Keanu Reeves Takes the Lead in Passengers

Keanu Reeves will once again tackle the sci-fi genre with his latest film, Passengers. Back in January there were rumors that the actor would star in the Gabriele Muccino directed feature and according to THR, it’s been confirmed that he will headline the epic that’s being described as “Adam & Eve in Space.”

The story for Passengers centers on a group of scientists making a centuries long voyage to a new planet while in a deep sleep. Due to a computer glitch one of them, Jim Preston (Reeves), a mechanic is awakened and is faced with 90 years before anyone else comes to. In fear of growing old alone, he awakens a beautiful woman named Aurora to be his companion.

Production on Passengers is scheduled to begin sometime in January even though the location hasn’t been confirmed. The screenplay for the film was penned by Jon Spaihts and is currently going through rewrites. We’re not sure who will play the female lead opposite Reeves but the producers and director are leaning towards a lesser known actress.

Highest Paid Actors Who Can’t Act

Have you ever watched a movie and thought to yourself, how the hell did this person get cast? Hollywood is full of successful actors and actresses who’ve made a steady living off of their “craft,” and by craft I mean the ability to bullshit their way into films. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of aspiring Sean Penns out there, but for every one there are three Ashton Kutchers. For every young Meryl Streep there are five Megan Foxs and it’s been like that since the beginning of time.

David Caruso

CSI: Miami has left its predecessor in the dirt in terms of ratings and has become somewhat of a cult phenomenon thanks to David Caruso and his infamous sunglasses. Ever since I saw him in 1982′s First Blood, I should have known he was up to know good. He caused a big stink on the set of NYPD Blue and left the show after one season, only to appear in such mediocre films as Jade and Kiss of Death. Now, he’s been reborn as some kind of TV messiah put on the same level as Hugh Laurie’s Dr. House, and Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer. Sorry, but Horatio Caine has become a parody of himself and it’s mostly due to the non-intentional comedic performance given by the man behind the shades.

Overall Success: 6/10

Scarlett Johansson

This will probably anger the general public, but Scarlett Johansson‘s performances put me to sleep. She’s not a horrible actress (I’ve definitely seen worse), but she’s not as great as the media makes her out to be either. With her acting it always seems as if she’s aware of the camera. Whether its underacting (Lost in Translation) or overacting (Match Point), Ms. Johansson’s not that great. Let’s give her accolades to someone else who truly deserves them.

Ashton Kutcher

This guy just doesn’t do it for me. During the peak of Kutcher’s fame during the TV series, That ’70′s Show and Punk’d I just couldn’t find his appeal. Sure, he’s a good looking guy, but Hollywood is filled with pretty faces. Ashton has managed to turn his douchebag charm into a career staple. Who can forget his roles in such cinematic classics as Dude, Where’s My Car, My Bosses Daughter, Just Married and my personal favorite What Happens in Vegas. He’s turned playing an asshole into an art form, and audiences just eat it up.

Estimated Annual Salary: No one knows! He’s doing a good job of hiding it, do you know what’s in his wallet?

Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges

After his appearance in the Oscar winning film Crash, I thought rapper turned actor Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges had a promising future ahead. I was partially right, because in the past four year’s we haven’t been able to get this guy off the screen. He’s been in everything from Max Payne to Guy Ritchie‘s European flick RockNRolla. Bridges biggest problem is that he fails to connect with any of his characters. You could blindfold me and play a snippet of audio from every movie he’s ever done and I would think they were all from the same film. He’s what you call bor-ing.

Common

This one kind of hurts because I love Common as a music artist, but when comes to acting he is no master. Like Ludacris he has found himself in multiple big budget films and I don’t know how or why. Wanted was a crappy movie overall so his performance blended right in, but Terminator Salvation was where I really noticed his lack of “talent.” Every time he spoke, it was like nails on a chalkboard. His performance was so dull and unbelievable that it hurt my eyes. I need for him and Ludacris to go take a couple of acting classes with Will Smith and LL Cool J so they can learn how to successfully make the transition from music to film.

Paul Walker

I will admit that Paul Walker has slightly improved his skills during the span of his career, but he is far from where he should be. Why is it that every time he’s in a movie the words, “Dude” and “Stoked” always find their way into his dialogue? After his stint as a teen heartthrob in films like She’s All That, and Varsity Blues, Walker decided to kick it up a notch by becoming a recognizable force in the action genre thanks to The Fast and the Furious. Walker epitomizes the surfer guy persona even when the role doesn’t call for it. How does he keep getting away with that?

Megan Fox

Megan Fox herself has even expressed confusion when it comes to her acting. She’s only starred in a handful of recognizable movies, two of which co-starred giant robots, and after seeing her in Jennifer’s Body I’m convinced her career has been a luck of the draw. She couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper bag with a big hole in it. Like most actors in Hollywood she trades on her looks, but she doesn’t seem to understand that they won’t be around forever. One day she’ll realize that she needs more than a tube of red lipstick to get asses in the seats, but then again hasn’t Jennifer’s Body already proven that?

Keanu Reeves has the type of career that fellow beach boy Paul Walker could only dream of. After over 20 years in the movie business he’s built a massive career for himself off of his stoic, and unresponsive delivery. He’s pretty much played the same character in every movie he’s been in, that character being himself. In Speed he’s Keanu on a bus, in the Matrix he’s Keanu in a trench coat, in The Day the Earth Stood Still he’s Keanu in the role he was born to play. How does he do it? Damn you Keanu Reeves for half-assing it for two decades, and still laughing all the way to the bank!

Cowboy Bebop Too Expensive to Produce

The live action adaptation of the popular anime Cowboy Bebop may have hit the skids. Actor Keanu Reeves is attached to star as the lead character Spike Spiegel in the film, and he recently spoke to MTV about the development status of the script. When producing adaptations of any sort the remake is rarely better than the original, but that’s not the case with Cowboy Bebop. According to Reeves the current script is too good to be produced.

The screenplay for Cowboy Bebop was penned by Peter Craig who described his script as “extremely faithful” to the source material. Perhaps that’s why it’s currently in rewrites? According to Reeves, when they presented a draft of the screenplay to the studio they thought it was fantastic, but explained that it would cost half a billion dollars to make! So at the moment, Craig is tweaking the story so that the production of the film doesn’t bankrupt its investors.

Reeves stated that all the influential Bebop characters will be featured in the film, spanning from “Spike to Ein.” I know there are a lot of people out there who are against Reeves portrayal of Spike. I know this because at one point I felt the same way. Physically he has the look down, and he is a serious anime fan so I don’t doubt his conviction. It sounds like they produced a script that fans would really want to see, too bad the studio is making them dumb it down. That’s not a good sign.

Keanu Reeves is a Jail Bird

Our favorite stoic actor, Keanu Reeves has bravely gone where few people would ever want to go. I’m not talking about the Matrix, I’m referring to jail. According to the Associated Press, Reeves recently entered two jail facilities located in Buffalo, New York. Interestingly enough, the actor was given access to the building that the federal government has been denied. What’s up with that?

The two jails that Reeves visited are currently under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. It turns out that the Erie County Sheriff’s Department is on the receiving end of a lawsuit for multiple civil rights violation. Therefore, the feds won’t be welcome anytime soon. The actor on the other hand received the star treatment when he arrived, and got an exclusive tour this past Sunday.

Reeves was scouting the institutions as possible locations to shoot his upcoming film Henry’s Crime. He will produce and star in the film about a big-hearted man falsely accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo. If I was a member of the federal government I would be so pissed. They let Neo in, but not an investigator? Now the “man” knows how it feels to be out of the loop for once.

Keanu Reeves to Star and Produce Henry’s Crime

Keanu Reeves will pull double duty for his upcoming film according to Variety. Henry’s Crime is the actor’s next project of choice, and it will be a romantic comedy. Reeves will co-star and co-produce the film as the first feature on his Company Films banner alongside Stephen Hamel. We previously reported on the production of Henry’s Crime last fall, and we’ve got some more development updates to add to the story.

Henry’s Crime will be directed by Malcolm Venville, and is scheduled to start shooting in November. The distribution for the film hasn’t been set in stone so the release date is uncertain at the moment. This will be Reeves’ first comedy since his work on 2003′s Something’s Gotta Give. The story for Henry’s Crime is described as “a Capra-esque romantic comedy in which Reeves will play a big-hearted man who is falsely accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo.” The script is written by Sacha Gervasi, who recently produced and directed Anvil! The Story of Anvil.

Whatever happened to Speed era Keanu Reeves? I miss him. I definitely enjoyed his work in The Matrix films, but mid-nineties Keanu was the way to go. Even though people dogged Point Break to no end, you can’t deny its pop culture relevance. I don’t know how I feel about seeing the actor as the lead in a rom-com. His role in Something’s Gotta Give was OK, but he wasn’t the lead character so he could fly under the radar. We’ll see how this plays out.
