New ‘Total Recall’ Remake Photos Feature Gunplay, Bloody Stars, And Dramatic Stares

Reemerging from rubble of upcoming summer movies that existed before The Avengers’ box office dominion and the premiere of the third and final The Dark Knight Rises trailer, the Total Recall remake is stumbling forth from the wreckage to remind the world that it exists, and still plans on rearing its rebooted head on August 3—this time, via a series of new action images from the film.

In a series of new shots from the film recently released on the film’s website, we can see stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, and Kate Beckinsale cocking eyebrows, pointing guns and things, and splashed in blood as they parade within a remake/re-adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.

In the film, Farrell plays factory worker Douglas Quaid who, despite being married to Kate freaking Beckinsale, decides he needs to take a fake vacation from his life in which the memories of a super-spy are implanted into his brain. Things get muddy, however, when after the implantation, the state police arrive and accuse Quaid of actually being a spy—forcing Quaid to team up with a freedom fighter (Jessica Biel) while facing off against a corrupt Chancellor (Bryan Cranston) as reality and fantasy begin to blur together. Also, according to the trailer, lots of guns and CGI.

Total Recall is set to hit theaters on August 3.

View The Teaser For The Trailer For The ‘Total Recall’ Remake

One of the most odious modern marketing trends in the world of entertainment –besides these—has been the relatively new phenomenon of the trailer for the trailer: basically, we’re receiving an advertisement letting us know that an even longer and more detailed advertisement will be coming our way soon. Last week, we had to stomach the trailer for the trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, and this week, it’s the teaser for the trailer for Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake.

Essentially giving you a small taste of the remake, as well as letting you know that a fuller trailer for Total Recall will be broadcast on April 1^st during the Celtics/Heat game on ABC, the teaser offers the usual gang of modern action/ sci-fi movie trailer tropes: lots of lens flares, flat and depthless CGI, booming “hey, it worked for Inception” music, and jarring shifts into slow motion. Also, flying cars, because it isn’t a Hollywood movie future without flying cars (unfortunately, no Hover Boards). Not seen in the trailer, unfortunately, is the always-excellent Bryan Cranston, who plays the film’s villain.

That said, there’s a chance that the Total Recall remake will make for a solid sci-fi popcorn flick (even without the charming Schwarzenegger cheese of the original); unfortunately, the teaser for the trailer for the film isn’t doing it any favors.

Total Recall is set for an August 3rd release, and stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Bryan Cranston.

Weekend Box Office: Underworld Awakening Claims Top Spot

Kate Beckinsale jumped from one top spot to another. The fierce actress remained at the top of the box office with her new movie Underworld Awakening, which brought in a solid amount of $25.4 million. In the No. 2 spot was Red Tails which made a surprising solid debut of $19.1 million. Contraband, Beckinsale’s other movie, fell to No. 3. The heist thriller grossed $12.2 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $46.1 million. Five weeks after its debut, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close finally broke into the top 10 with $10.5 million, coming in before Stephen Soderbergh‘s Haywire. The 9/11 film came in at No. 4, while Haywire rounded out the top 5 with $9 million.

Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks‘ 9/11 movie was nowhere near the top before this past weekend. Thanks to a nationwide release however, the film was able to break into the top 5. We completely underestimated the film in our Box Office Predictions post. Another film we got wrong was Beauty and the Beast 3D, which came in at No. 6 this past weekend. The Disney film isn’t doing as well as The Lion King, which is probably what the studio was hoping for. So far The Beauty and the Beast has earned a grand total of $33.3 million. Better luck next time Disney!

Kate Beckinsdale Leathers it up in Underworld Awakening Trailer

The Success of the 3-D Resident Evil film seems to have given new life to the Underworld franchise. It would explain why Kate Beckinsale is back after basically skipping the third film, why the film is in 3-D, and why probably a whole host of other things. The fourth film film Underworld Awakening is due out January 20, 2012, and the latest trailer offers a look at the plot, which concerns a werewolf vampire hybrid and no Scott Speedman. Check it out…

The one thing that can always be counted on with films like this are great British actors collecting reasonably large checks for work that will never go on their resume. Here that includes Charles Dance and Stephen Rea, following the grand tradition of performers like Sir Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine.

This comes from Swedish directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. Len Wiseman – who helmed the first two films – has only contributed to the script. But he got help from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, who recently wrote scripts for films as diverse as Thor and Clint Eastwood‘s Changeling. They are but two of the film’s four credited writers. Which means they really wrote the heck out of this movie. No running time is listed, but if this film runs too much longer than ninety minutes, I’d be shocked.

Kate Beckinsale And Jessica Biel Join ‘Total Recall’ Remake

Well, fans of remakes of really, really odd 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger films, along with fans of really, really pretty people, have something to celebrate this morning–/Film reports that, in addition to Colin Farrell playing hero Douglas Quaid and Bryan Cranston playing the bad guy, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel have both just been announced as recent add-ons to the cast of the Total Recall remake. In addition, Bill Nighy will round out the cast as resistance leader Quatto.

Beckinsale will play the role of Quaid’s life in the “real” world (really, none of this will make sense if you haven’t seen the original), originally portrayed by Sharon Stone, and Jessica Biel will star as the woman Quaid encounters in his “spy life.”

And while that may inspire some confidence in viewers approaching the remake, the fact that it doesn’t take place on Mars (which is sorta kinda a crucial plot point—imagine a 2001: A Space Odyssey that takes place in, say, north Jersey rather than in deep space), and the film is being directed by Underworld director Len “I like to cast my wife in things” Wiseman isn’t exactly bolstering. Seeing as how his directing credits are comprised of the Underworld trilogy, the Hawaii Five-O pilot, and the fourth Die Hard film (aka, Bruce Willis vs. Green Screen and Plausibility), it may be safe to not hold out for the Total Recall being something of a cinematic/ action masterwork.

But hey, it’s a Hollywood remake directed by an inauspicious director, starring beautiful people, and seems to have ditched some of the major plot points that made the original such an odd, original work—and that’s always worked well in the past, right?

Kate Beckinsale, Mark Wahlberg’s Contraband Picked Up by Universal

The last time we checked, Universal wasn’t the most popular or successful studio in Hollywood. Over the past few years they’ve had more than a fair share of bombs, but that’s not stopping them from taking risks. According to Deadline, the studio has emerged as a financier for the Kate Beckinsale, Mark Walhberg film Contraband, the American remake of the 2008 Icelandic feature Reykjavic-Rotterdam.

In the original version of the film, it centered on a security guard and former alcohol smuggler on the Iceland-Netherlands route who is tempted back into illicit business by a dubious friend after the security guard encounters financial problems. Contraband has been bouncing from Universal, to Working Title, to Relativity Media before ultimately ending up at Universal.

The budget is set at a modest $30 million with Wahlberg and Beckinsale in the package. Contraband will be directed by Baltasar Kormakur, but we’re awaiting info on when production will officially start. Even though we’re happy that the film has found a home, we’re not sure if Universal is the best place for it to be. How will they market the film? Do they expect it to bring in a large commercial audience? These questions need answers.

It’s Official: Kate Beckinsale Returning for Underworld 4!

For all of you who campaigned for Kate Beckinsale to return to the Underworld franchise, you’ve won. The actress has been confirmed to once again play the raven haired vampire Selene in Underworld 4. The last time she played the character was in the 2006 sequel Underworld 2, she then took a leave of absence for the third film [Rise of the Lycans] that featured Rhona Mitra as the lead.

According to THR, Beckinsale is in the process of finalizing her deal for the film, which is expected to to start production in March 2011. We’re not sure what the storyline for this installment will entail but we do know that a casting call has gone out for a young actress to play Selene’s daughter. That’s right, there will be a young vamp in this sequel!

John Hlavin wrote the script, which underwent revisions by comics writer and The Changeling scribe J. Michael Straczynski. The studio is currently looking for a director at the moment. The last two films were helmed by Beckinsale’s husband Len Wiseman. What’s he up to these days? If his other half can come back, we’re sure he can as well. Can’t he?

Kate Beckinsale Joins Mark Wahlberg in Contraband

If you haven’t watched Mark Wahlberg in the trailer for David O. Russell’s film The Fighter you should. He plays a boxer and is a lean mean fighting machine. With that being said, the actor has another project on the horizon according to Latino Review called Contraband. Yeah, it makes us think of that awesome Velvet Revolver album too, but this is something totally different. It will have Wahlberg joining Kate Beckinsale in what will be an American remake of the Icelandic thriller, Reykjavik-Rotterdam.

Reykjavik-Rotterdam will be directed by Baltasar Kormakur, the man who starred and produced the original, and owns the remake rights to the film. Robert De Niro in Everybody’s Fine Trailer

It’s been a long time since the movie going public has seen Robert De Niro in a role that didn’t capitalize off of his gangster movie past. A trailer has been released for the actor’s latest film entitled, Everybody’s Fine. De Niro takes on the role of a patriarch who’s trying to reconnect with his adult children after the death of their mother. The movie is a remake of Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore’s film Stanno Tutti Bene.

Take a look at De Niro, the family man…

A lot of Oscar buzz is being generated over De Niro’s performance in this film. Perhaps it’s because he’s stepping outside the box that so many critics have put him in. The trailer looks like a refreshing departure from what we’re used to seeing from the actor, and I hope similar roles follow.

While looking at this I’m not sure that it screams Oscar caliber, but it does look touching as well as entertaining. Everybody’s Fine co-stars Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, and Kate Beckinsale. The film is directed by Kirk Jones and will debut in theaters on December 4, 2009.

Whiteout: Movie Review

Based on the graphic novel series by Greg Rucka, director Dominic Sena presents Whiteout, starring Kate Beckinsale (who’s naked 5 minutes deep!) and Gabriel Macht.

Let’s check out the good, the bad, and the plot below…

The Players:

Director: Dominic Sena
Writers: Jon Hoeber, Eric Hoeber, Chad Hayes, and Carey Hareys.
Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Gabriel Macht, Tom Skerritt, Columbus Short, Alex O’Loughlin, Shawn Doyle

The Plot:

U.S. Marsahll Carrie Stetko (Beckinsale) has been stationed at the Antarctica South Pole research base for the past two years, and three days before her resignation and the departure of the last plane off the base for six months – an unidentified body appears on the ice and she has 72 hours to locate the killer.

The Good:

Kate Beckinsale: Surprise! A female other than Angelina Jolie is starring in a semi-bad ass leading role – and it was ACTUALLY believable. Why? Because not only does SHE take a few punches, but she fights back without implementing miraculous explosions of martial arts or supernatural powers.
Concept: The idea of being trapped on the desolate continent with the responsibility of conducting the first murder investigation in Antarctica (knowing the killer is still prowling around in some igloo) definitely had me interested. The stakes are high: it’s below freezing, the clock is ticking, and the death toll is rising as information continues to surface. Sure, the story itself is just as archetypal as every thriller film – but, surprisingly, the backdrop of Antarctica allows for some fresh twists and turns.
Ending: Despite the trite interjections of crap woven between the stimulating elements of the story – there is a solid payoff with a totally unexpected twist.

The Bad:

Dialogue: About every twenty minutes there was a segment of dialogue that was so painfully cliché, the ENTIRE theatre was in belly-aching hysterics. This, inevitably, minimized the plausibility of whatever “key” piece of the story-line was being presented.
Flashbacks: Throughout the course of the story, Sena cuts to flashbacks that feature Stetko’s dark past as a Marshall in the States and the are completely unnecessary. The flashbacks were excessive, and hindered what could have been another dimension of suspense, strengthening the final pay-off.

Overall:

Not bad. Would I see it again? No. Would I recommend it to everyone I know? No. But I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of the screening.

Rating: 5.5/10

Kate Beckinsale Back for Underworld 4?

I just don’t get the fascination with the Underworld franchise. I saw the first movie and I didn’t care to see anymore. Apparently, a lot of you out there can’t get enough of the films, and have caused the film’s studio Sony Screen Gems to take drastic action. Not only will there be more Underworld features in our future, but it’s original star Kate Beckinsale could be at the center of them.

According to BloodyDisgusting, Sony plans on jump starting an entirely new Underworld trilogy, the first of which will be in 3-D (screams). Not only that, but they received word from several sources that Underworld 1 & 2 star Kate Beckinsale would reprise her role as the vampire, Selene. The studio hasn’t confirmed her casting so neither can we, but I thought you should know that it’s out there. Underworld 4 is set for release in theaters on January 21, 2011.

I didn’t see Underworld 2 or 3 so I have no idea where Selene’s story could go if she did return. All I know is the first movie bored me to tears. I thought the action was underwhelming, and Beckinsale wasn’t nearly as much of an ass kicker as she could have been.

New Kate Beckinsale Whiteout Poster

What’s with the hidden promotion for the upcoming Warner Bros film, Whiteout? I see stuff here and there for it but nothing that sets it a part from the slew of other movies dropping this fall. That’s a shame because a new promo poster has been just been released and I think it looks pretty good. It’s pretty simple but complex at the same time. It features the face of Kate Beckinsale looking quite “crystallized,” with the tag line “see your last breath.”

Whiteout follows a U.S. Marshall named Carrie Stetko who finds herself in Antarctica after tracking a serial killer to the frigid location. Wherever murderers go death usually follows, so it’s up to her to solve the first murder that’s ever touched arctic soil. The film co-stars Alex O’Loughlin, and The Spirit’s Gabriel Macht. The film is set to hit theaters on September 11. As you may have noticed they didn’t put that date on the poster, just the month.
