Julie Andrews Reunites With The Sound of Music Cast After 45 Years

We need the special anniversary edition of The Sound of Music in our DVD collections right now! The cast of the classic musical appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” this Thursday after a 45 year hiatus. The show started out with a one on one with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, then they brought out all the actors who played their children in the film who are currently middle aged men and women. The cast revealed some interesting things about what went on behind the scenes of the shoot and it kind of taints our image of the family film.

During their interview, Plummer admitted to Oprah that he had a huge crush on Andrews during filming. She was 28 years old and he was 34. At the time she had just had a baby and he said that he had to keep himself at arm’s length because of that. He described her as “an awful tease!”

They also revealed that Plummer was considered a Hollywood bad boy at the time of his casting. This is news for us because this was the first film we ever saw him in. He was well known for his dramatic roles and getting into trouble behind the scenes. During the show they revealed that he taught his on screen daughter Charmian Carr (Lisa), who was 21 at the time, how to drink! She was playing 16 going on 17 but she was an adult and he treated her like one.

It’s hard to think that Carr and Andrews are only 7 years apart yet Andrews played her step-mother. The biggest piece of trivia had to come from the casting of the kids. Originally Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, and Mia Farrow were all in the running to play one of the Von Trapp children, but the producers decided to go with unknowns instead.

So long, farewell my eye, the cast from the classic musical The Sound of Music are back! When was the last time that you saw every member of the famous Von Trapp family in the same place at the same time? A while ago Julie Andrews and the seven actors who played the children appeared on a national news program but Christopher Plummer was unable to attend. Therefore it wasn’t really an reunion was it?

Today we’ve learned that after 45 years, Andrews, Plummer, Charmian Carr, Nicholas Hammond, Heather Menzies-Urich, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner, and Kym Karath will all reunite on an upcoming episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

The host announced that the cast will appear on the October 29th episode of her show. Mark your calendars because this really is a once and a lifetime opportunity. Oprah is pulling out all the stops for her final season, because this is nothing short of a miracle. The Sound of Music is my favorite Julie Andrews film and I have fond memories of watching it as a child. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there besides myself who would love to see the cast together again.

Despicable Me: Movie Review

Move over How to Train Your Dragon, Universal Pictures is releasing their animated feature Despicable Me in hopes of cashing in on some that 3D family-fun. The film stars “The Office’s” Steve Carell, “How I Met Your Mother’s” Jason Segel and Get Him to the Greek’s Russell Brand. With those 3 as the main actors it sounds like a match made in comedy heaven, right? The movie does have its funny moments and is filled with plenty of entertaining material but it’s in no shape or form the best animated film of the season (Toy Story 3 took that honor)…

The Plot:

Despicable Me centers on a villain named Gru, who plans on taking over the world. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he runs into a trio of orphan girls whom he adopts and plans on using as pawns to defeat his arch rival.

The Good:

Voices: Using “name actors” can sometimes distract the audience from an animated character because they visualize them doing the voice. That wasn’t the case here. They all put on an accent of some sort that took away from their persona, which allows you to focus on the character and not the “star” behind the mic.
Music: When hip hop artist Pharrell Williams was hired to do some of the music I was worried for various reasons but I shouldn’t have been. The original songs he added to the film fit perfectly. They were catchy but not too over the top. My personal favorite is Gru’s opening tune, the self-titled “Despicable Me.”
3D: The 3D here was nowhere near as amazing as How to Train Your Dragon’s but it was still well done. After a year of sub-par 3D conversions this film was a breath of fresh air.

The Bad:

Pace: The beginning of the film is a bit on the slow side. The build up doesn’t exactly keep your attention, which is unfortunate because the last act is thoroughly enjoyable.

The So-So:

Story: There’s nothing really original about the story but they try to make it unique in their own way. We’ve seen plenty of bad guys turn to mush in movies before but it’s the emotion that the actor’s put into their performances that sell it.

Overall:

Despicable Me is a decent animated film marketed towards the family crowd. It has its fair share of problems but in the end it still manages to deliver a nice message about finding family in the most unexpected places.

Rating: 8/10

Universal Pictures has released the 1,000th trailer for their upcoming animated film Despicable Me. We get that they want us to see the movie but come on, ease up a little will ya? Luckily, the trailer is actually funny and surprisingly offers some new footage that we haven’t seen in the previous versions. Check it out…

Shrek 4: Movie Review

Another Shrek, another chance to see your favorite animated characters and another chance to be reminded of the genius that was the first film, without this being the first film. The problem with this entire series is that it started with a bang, fell to a whimper, and with it’s grand finale is simply enough to make up for how much it’s lost without really ever wow-ing us. Shrek Forever After is a good movie, they were creative in finding a way to make the characters fresh again, and there were definitely enough laughs in it to leave me satisfied, BUT it wasn’t without a few problems. But lets starts at the top…

The Synopsis:

As Shrek settles into his perfect life, he begins to get bored and wishes he could have just one day to himself. He makes a pact with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin to get back to feeling like a real ogre again, but of course he forgets to read the fine print and is damned to a twisted version of Far Far Away — where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met — he sets out to restore his world and get a kiss from his true love in order to set everything right again — oh what a kiss can do in Far Far Away!

The Good:

Bit of a Comeback: This is definitely no where near as good as the first film, but it’s definitely a revival from the third and on a slight improvement from the second.
Donkey: Whichever main characters you liked in the first film, you’ll like in this film, mainly because they went back to the beginning, came up with a way to make it fresh and then capitalized on what you loved. For me The Donkey is still the saving grace and the minor characters are really where the belly laughs come in.
Kids/Adult Film: This is definitely a good kids/adult film, meaning that there were definitely a lot of opportunities for both parties to enjoy the film. I would bring my little brother, despite the little girl next to me who pointed to the screen and said “I don’t like that movie.”
Music: The music and the throw backs to famous songs is so important for this film and as always the music was well placed and well used to really make those laughs hit home.
Solid Ending: It’s as predictable and cheesy as it comes, but a nice twist on the original story and if there was ever a moment to go a little over the top, this was it.
Fun Cameos: As always, it’s the smaller characters that pop up in each film that make this series so fun. There were a lot of good cameos but…

The Bad:

Not Enough in the Cameos: There were lots of different characters and cameos, but they were never fully utilized. Craig Robinson has about 3 lines, 3 good lines, but that’s all. Same goes for John Hamm and Jane Lynch. They were solid and fun, but just not as potent as say the gingerbread man in the first film.
No Surprises: Overall, the film is very predictable. Which might have worked for the ending, but you need some suspense in the middle to keep you going. The thing that the first film had going for it was that it was an original idea, with brand new animation and a something different for us to be blown away by. This film tried to revive itself by creating a new world and did so in part, but it was very predictable and may have been an improvement for the Shrek series, but doesn’t really compare to some of the other animations out there today.
3D: For me, the 3-D in this film felt like a gimmick. It was fun and well added but not needed. It felt like they were trying to make a little extra money on their last hoora!

Rating: 7.5/10

Shrek Forever After made it’s premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival on April 21st and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 21st.

Overall:

It’s no work of genius but the last 30 minutes have the best jokes which will definitely leave you walking out of the theater smiling and it’s worth seeing.

New Despicable Me Featurette with Carell, Segal, Andrews

NCM (does anyone know what NCM is without looking it up? I challenge you!) has just released a new Despicable Me featurette with your favorite Steve Carell, the lovable Julie Andrews, Jason Segal along and new-comer Miranda Cosgrove. The film is directed by Chris Meledandri and Pierre Coffin, and co-stars EVERYONE, including the aforementioned and Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride and Jemaine Clement. This is basically just the trailer with a few quotes from some of the actors cut in, nothing huge, but fun none-the-less.

By the way the “it’s so fluffy!” — very relatable. Fluffy = Awesome

You can also check out the international trailer, the official trailer, the teaser trailer (god how many trailers does this film have?) now if you’d like, although they are not too different from you just watched. You can try to spot the differences though!

Despicable Me is a Universal release and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2010 and it will be released in 3-D.

Tooth Fairy: Movie Review

If you told me ten years ago that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would sport a pink tutu, and fairy wings I would have called you insane. But that’s exactly what’s happens in Tooth Fairy, a family comedy that stars Johnson as the fabled creature who takes children’s teeth and leaves them money under their pillow. The film is directed by Michael Lembeck and he literally places Johnson in the land of fairies and forces him to act out every children’s fantasy known to man. It may be a joy for the kids but it turns out to be a nightmare for the adults…

The Plot:

Tooth Fairy centers on Derek Thompson, an intimidating hockey player known for his ability to knock out his opponents teeth with his deadly charge. He has the ego to match his huge persona and makes sure that everyone around him knows who’s boss. One day he unwisely shatters the dreams of a young fan by telling them they can never grow up to be a success. This causes a domino effect that lands him in Lily’s (Andrews) fairy headquarters. He’s sentenced to two weeks hard time as a tooth fairy, and from that point on cliched laughter and slapstick gags ensue.

The Good:

Billy Crystal: The stand up legend was the only actor who had any genuine comedic timing thanks to his background. He only had two scenes in the movie and both of them were the most memorable out of the entire film. He brought the talent, but most importantly he brought the laughs.
Chase Ellison: The young actor stars as the son of Ashley Judd’s character and has some of the most emotional scenes in the film. He holds his own against someone as physically intimidating as Johnson without breaking a sweat. This kid is one to watch.

The Bad:

Screenplay: The underlying premise of keeping the faith regardless of your age was great, but the script was filled with cliched dialogue and unoriginal content. Every important scene in the film that showed any type of character growth was ripped from somewhere else, and they weren’t trying to hide it.
Johnson and Judd’s Chemistry: Watching these two play a couple was truly cringe-worthy. They’re both good looking, and you’d think they’d link up quite nicely but that wasn’t the case. Their intimate scenes appeared forced and unnatural.
Special Effects: The visuals that were used to show the fairy magic looked very low budget. They didn’t come across as polished or professional, which is sad considering this is a major studio film.

Overall:

Tooth Fairy is an unoriginal family film that takes an old school lesson and adds nothing new to it. The film is filled with stale humor, bad effects, and with the exception of a few, mediocre acting. It’s not worth your time or money.

Rating: 4/10

Julie Andrews Gets Mean for Despicable Me

Julie Andrews is known for playing sweet matriarchal figures in movies, but this summer she’s going to be a real “wench.” According to the actress she’ll be appearing as a one of the bad guys in the animated film Despicable Me. I never thought I’d live to see the day when Mary Poppins got down and dirty, but Andrews had a lot of devilish things to say about her character…

I recently got the opportunity to speak to the screen legend, while she was out doing promotion for her upcoming film Tooth Fairy, and she spoke about her role in the upcoming film. She’s one of the many stars who lend their voices to the feature’s cast led by Steve Carell.

“I play Carell’s mom, and it is maybe the nastiest character I’ve ever played. She’s a bad woman with a wonderful attitude. She’s so self-involved, that she’s delicious. Her name is Marlena, they said I could name her. She’s the ugliest looking wench you’ve ever seen.”

She went on to say that she didn’t use her normal voice for the character, but got to switch it up a bit and give a mixture of every accent under the sun. They all come together to form the most wretched, nagging sound you’ve ever heard and she loved every minute of doing it. Andrews will always be a woman of virtue in my eyes no matter who she plays on screen, but I will get some laughs from watching her play a mean old lady.

Despicable Me hits theaters on July 9, 2010.

The Tooth Fairy Official Trailer

Prepare yourself for a few painful minutes of video watching. A trailer has been released for Dwayne Johnson‘s upcoming family comedy, The Tooth Fairy. Last week we brought you the poster for the film that scared me and many of our reader sh*tless. It featured Johnson with wings and ice skates, so you can understand the terror factor. Now that the trailer has been released, it adds a whole other level of weirdness thanks to the use of powder blue spandex and fairy dust.

As you can see, Johnson stars as a premiere hockey player who’s sentenced to work as a tooth fairy after he disrespects a kid at one of his games. Throughout the film we see Derek stumbling through strangers homes, while trying to get accustomed to his new job. Even though he dreads it in the beginning, he starts to notice a moral change in himself due to his new surroundings.

The Tooth Fairy co-stars Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Billy Crystal, and I noticed a little cameo by professional skateboarder, Ryan Sheckler. What’s he doing in the movie? This trailer really hurts my eyes. I need Johnson in a badass action movie to follow this diabetically sweet film, pronto. For goodness sake, he’s starring opposite Mary Poppins!

The Tooth Fairy opens in theaters nationwide on January 22, 2010.

Today is the day for teaser trailers! Universal just sent over the first look at the upcoming 3-D, CGI animated feature Despicable Me. The cast features a who’s who of funny men and women that include Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride, and Julie Andrews. The film is directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, and will be released in theaters on July 9, 2010.

After watching this trailer and reading the cast list, I find it hard to believe Bill Hader is nowhere to be found. Do you know how rare it is for him and Kristen Wiig not to be joined at the hip? They’re in everything together! Overall, this looks like it could be pretty funny. There’s too much comedic talent involved for it not to be.
