The Cabin in the Woods Trailer

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods was the unfortunate victim of financing. Set up with MGM, the studio went through a rocky period, which left Woods and their Red Dawn remake distributor-less. Cabin was shot in 2009, but will finally see the light of day April 13, 2012. But if you don’t believe it will finally come out, there’s now proof as Lionsgate has put out a trailer.

The film was set to be released in 2010, but was supposedly delayed a year to be post-converted to 3-D. This doesn’t seem to be 3-D, so that must have been a cover story for the film’s troubled post-production. The trailer features Chris Hemsworth, but doesn’t offer anything from Richard Jenkins or Bradley Whitford. Check out the trailer…

And the reason for that goes with the film’s marketing – there are a number of big reveals in the picture to what’s going on with the Cabin, though the trailer spells some of that out (and seems to show some material from the third act). This is Whedon and Goddard’s take on the slasher genre, and it’s done in a very post-modern way, a modern variation on Scream. But the trailer is selling that this starts out like any other horror film, and then becomes something different. How different? We’ll know for sure come April.

‘The Avengers’ Full Trailer Has Been Released

Well, it’s finally here—the trailer for the Marvel Films juggernaut in which they mash together the Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America films into a gargantuan, two-hour plus sandwich of explosions, Robert Downey Jr. quips, unconvincing Hulk CGI, and Scarlett Johansson doing things in tights: The Avengers. Toss in some Nine Inch Nails music, the bad guy with the slick mullet from Thor, and some Sam Jackson action in which Sam Jackson acts all Sam Jackson with that Sam Jackson style (did I mention Sam Jackson is in this? Sam Jackson is in this), and you’ve got just about every single Marvel movie trailer you’ve ever seen, all rolled into one convenient mush for you to slurp up.

So, what do you think? The film is directed by Joss Whedon, the man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Serenity, so there’s a sliver of hope that this won’t simply be a directed-by-committee film which is essentially a checklist of studio-mandated moments that just barely hang together and exist solely to generate ad revenue via action figures, video games, fast food tie-ins, and overseas markets. Oh, who am I kidding—there’s loud rock music, Scarlett Johansson is kicking things, and stuff goes boom real loud. I’ll see you there on opening day.

The Avengers Are Assembled (Via Photoshop)

Marvel studios has been building to Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers since 2008, when Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson had an end credit scene that laid out the possibility of Tony Stark working with a team. Since then we’ve seen Chris Hemsworth cast as Thor, Scarlett Johansson cast as Black Widow, Chris Evans cast as Captain America, Jeremy Renner cast as Hawkeye, and Edward Norton cast as the Hulk. Six out of seven isn’t bad. All of The Avengers save Jackson grace the latest Entertainment weekly cover, and features the new Hulk Mark Ruffalo. Check out the cover….

The Avengers has a teaser poster out, and we’ve been hearing word that an official trailer may hit as soon as next week on Real Steel. Which means shooting is about done, and post is already under way for the film, which opens May 4, 2012. AND THIS is the best they can come up with? What the heck is that look on Mark Ruffalo’s face?

The Entertainment Weekly story has more pictures of the shooting and suggests that the shoot went well-ish (though Robert Downey Jr. asked for lots of rewrites) which may get people excited. Bottom line is that the fanbase is pre-sold, so though this may be putting the wrong foot forward, it does get across what to expect from the film. An ensemble. Hopefully they work together better than this cover suggests.

There’s no way this would dissuade you from seeing The Avengers, right?

D23: Avengers Footage Description – Robert Downey Jr. points out that “We Have a Hulk!”

Saving the best for last, D23‘s movie panel concluded with footage from The Avengers, which is still shooting and has two weeks left to go. Though some of the cast was unavailable, Disney brought out Robert Downey Jr., Scarlet Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Colbie Smulders to wave at the crowd before they showed the footage twice. Here’s the breakdown…

The footage

Loki (Hiddleston) is locked in a glass cage, while Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) taunts him about how the container will drop him 30,000 feet into steel if he so much as scratches the glass “Ant. Boot.”
Loki then notes why they have the cage in the first place (to hold The Hulk) as it cuts to Black Widow (Johansson), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Hemsworth) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) watching (and possibly Tony Stark, though he’s kept off screen).
Loki taunts Fury that they’re so close, but don’t have what they’re looking for.
Banner notes that Loki “grows on you.”

There’s a montage of action (Thor’s hammer hits Cap’s shield, there’s a chase after Loki, Iron Man flies)
Tony Stark is at a bar at his house, having a conversation with Loki, where Stark talks about having assassins (then it highlights Black Widow and Renner’s Hawkeye), a demi-God (Thor), and ” a living legend, who kind of lives up to the legend” (Cap).
Loki interrupts with “I have an army!” And Stark replies “We have a Hulk.” And then the footage cuts to the Hulk. Boom, title card, end.

The best part of the footage was getting to see Ruffalo’s Banner in action, who’s the newest actor to play the Hulk character, and the one who it’s most exciting to see play in that world. This very much feels like a Joss Whedon script as everyone says snarky, kind of funny things. I was surprised that the footage was not scope (2.35:1), but it’s hard to know if the film is being shot flat (1.85:1), or if that’s just what was available for the footage. Still, it sent everyone out on a high.

Buffy Creator Joss Whedon Reacts to Reboot, ‘Are Vampires Even Popular Any More?’

Earlier today Warner Bros and Atlas Entertainment announced their partnership to create a reboot of the nineties franchise Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The character was created by Joss Whedon who directed the 1992 feature film and created the 1997 TV series. After it was revealed that they’d found a writer to pen the screenplay for the reboot Whedon had to step in and give his two cents. E!’s Kristin Dos Santos reached out to the creator and gave him an opportunity to respond to the news.

Kristin, I’m glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

Don’t be depressed Joss, you still have the entire cast of The Avengers to fall back on. But all kidding aside, we completely get where he’s coming from. As members of the generation that grew up on the character it’s going to be hard watching another actress step into the role, and another writer give her a voice. There’s a certain humor, darkness, and vulnerability to Buffy that was distinctively Whedon and can’t be recreated. They have big, unique shoes to fill.

The Avengers Will Have Another Female Character – Shocking!

Here’s a piece of random news regarding Marvel’s upcoming big screen adaptation of The Avengers. Joss Whedon is hammering away at the script and keeping all its details close to the vest but recently he opened up about one aspect of the story. He revealed that it will have more than one female presence. Black Widow might not be the only woman kicking ass and looking great while doing it.

Here’s what Whedon had to say about the ladies of The Avengers:

“It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger,” Whedon said of Johansson’s part. “But she will not be the only female character.”

Surprise, surprise.. not! The bad news here is that this casts out any hope that we might have had for Wasp or The Scarlett Witch to appear as members of the team. The good news is that a female might be one of the villains. Last week, there was word that former Emma Frost candidate (from X-Men First Class) Alice Eve could appear in The Avengers as one of the bad guys. A source also revealed that the character would somehow tie into Thor‘s mythology. Interesting.

Whedon also spoke about what comics will influence his take on The Avengers. There are various storylines and arcs he could try and it sounds like he’s going to have his hand in all of them.

“It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of The Avengers titles.”

The Ultimates was the run that really got me back into comic books with the X-Men, Spider-Man, and Avengers run. But there’s still a part of me that yearns for Wasp and The Scarlett Witch. They appeared in both versions so why can’t they pop up in the film?

Comic-Con 2010: The Avengers Assemble Video!

“Then there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born.” Check out ScreenCrave’s video footage of the entire cast of Marvel’s The Avengers coming out on stage at this year’s Comic-Con! It was epic and we caught it all on tape! Take a look…

With that much muscle, charisma, and hair gel in the same place at the same time, you’d think the stage would explode. Samuel L. Jackson came out as the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury (but without his eye patch). He was followed by second in command Agent Phil Coulson as played by Clark Gregg, then the First Lady of The Avengers, super-spy and assassin Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

The two Chris’ soon followed, Hemsworth as Thor and Evans as Captain America. After that it was time to bring out the really big guns. That’s right, Tony Stark himself, the character who started it all as played by Robert Downey Jr. Being the originator they felt it was only right for him to introduce the new crew, which included Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner aka The Hulk .

The presentation was capped off with director Joss Whedon and a special photo op for all the photographers and fans in attendance. And yeah, they all went wild!

Comic-Con 2010: Avengers Assemble! Casting Announcements!

Wow! At the end of Marvel’s Thor/Captain America panel presentation, they surprised the audience with a short teaser for The Avengers, which was followed by a surprise appearance from Samuel L. Jackson who came out to introduce the official cast of the movie! Find out more after the jump!

Just as the crowd was preparing to leave, the lights dimmed, and the silhouette of the Avengers emblem glowed on screen, as Jackson began to narrate:

“And then there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines…”

He then introduced S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Tony Stark himself (Iron Man), Robert Downey Jr.!

Downey went on to announce Jeremy Renner who’s been cast as Hawkeye and it was revealed that Mark Ruffalo will be taking over from Edward Norton as The Hulk! And then HE joined them on stage! Then Joss Whedon came out! They were all on stage together, in the same place at the same time, just like it will be in 2012 when the movie comes out! Wow!

Comic-Con 2010 Live Blog: JJ Abrams and Joss Whedon Panel

Let the geek times roll! Star Trek‘s J.J. Abrams and Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Joss Whedon are about to chit-chat on the future of pop culture for an hour or so. EW is promising an in-depth conversation about how technology, gaming, and global culture are reshaping how Hollywood tells stories through TV, film and the web. Who better to elaborate of the subject than these two guys? We’re here at The Visionaries panel and it’s time for the nerdgasms to begin…

3:43 pm: Abrams and Whedon have taken the stage. Their talking about when they first met each other back in their WB days during “Felicity” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

3:44 pm: Whedon says there was never any doubt that he would be a storyteller. Abrams says when he was a kid he was the idiot who loved to do magic tricks for his family. And he revealed that he thinks magic nerds are worse than comic nerds.

3:49 pm: Joss announced that he’s officially directing The Avengers!! But it’s too early to talk about the story. He’s reworking the script right now.

3:53 pm: Abrams also says it’s way too early to talk about Super 8. He’d love to show footage but they haven’t shot any. They’re shooting in September.

3:55 pm: Super 8 WILL NOT be in 3D thank God!

3:55 pm: Aww, Whedon says he’s down with the 3D trend, but he agrees that there are definitely movies that shouldn’t be in the format like his very own, Cabin in the Woods.

3:56 pm: Thank you JJ! He says he’s not totally on board with it. He doesn’t like the dimness that comes with wearing the glasses. He likes to see bright, vibrant colors on screen.

3:58 pm: Whedon says Cabin in the Woods is finished but they don’t know what the studio is going to do with it. For godsake they put James Bond on hold, he doesn’t have a chance in hell! Whedon wants the movie to be the only horror film that’s not in 3D so they’ll market it that way. He says, “It’s the only film that shows images move across the screen. It’s painterly!”

4:02 pm: Whedon is talking about Dr. Horrible and how successful it was even though it’s an internet property. He’s proud of the model because of all the artists who benefited off of it.

4:05 pm: Whedon says he’d love for there to be a Dr. Horrible sequel but they want to do it on their terms and at the moment they’re — interminable.

4:07 pm: Both Abrams and Whedon say that a Mutant Enemy or Bad Robot (their respective production companies) channel would be a tedious task so they don’t know if they’d want a network dedicated to their shows.

4:08 pm: On the failure of “Dollhouse” Whedon said, “I was definitely trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I learned that you should know your audience. I’m at Marvel right now and I’m extremely happy. They’re the studio, they know what they want.”

4:12 pm: Whedon just said that he’s still angry at the Empire Strikes back because it doesn’t have an ending. “It doesn’t. He’s frozen in carbonate!”

4:14 pm: Abrams just gave a shout out to Edgar Wright. And Whedon says he’s had moments of sheer panic because of his obsession with the new Star Trek. Abrams gets a little bashful and Whedon says, “No, the kids have to hear this!”

4:25 pm: Whedon says he will be very respectful of the established tone of The Avengers. He knows that he has to blend all of the stories from the previous movies. He assures us that when he writes for Tony Stark or Steve Rogers they’ll sound like the characters not Whedon himself.

There you have it! These two are some amazing acts and hilarious to boot! JJ says “Bye!”

Joss Whedon to Rework The Avengers Script

Yesterday the heavens opened when the powers that be named Joss Whedon as the director of the upcoming Marvel adaptation, The Avengers. Not only will he be on hand to direct the comic book masterpiece, he’ll also have input on the script and with a film of this size the story needs all the help it can get.

According to the original report from Variety (via Cinemablend), The Avengers screenplay that was written by Zak Penn will be “reworked” once Whedon comes on board. Thank God! That means all the extra garbage that doesn’t need to be there will get cut out and the characters will actually be somewhat similar to how they are in the comics.

Whedon has written for both film, television, and most importantly comic books. Penn on the other hand has a boatload of crappy projects under his belt including Elektra, X-Men: The Last Stand (shutter), and Inspector Gadget. We’re not saying he’s a complete hack because he also penned X2: X-Men United but that one movie isn’t enough to compensate for all the rest. There’s a definite lack of trust with him and this property so it’s great that Whedon will step in and clean house.

Joss Whedon to Direct Marvel’s The Avengers

According to a report from Deadline, Joss Whedon will direct the Marvel superhero movie The Avengers, which means it might not be a steaming pile of crap after all! There have been rumors regarding his interest in the film for weeks and finally all that speculation has come to fruition. Whedon’s our man…

According to Deadline’s sources at Marvel Studios, Whedon is in the final negotiation stages of his contract to direct the team up flick that will feature Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and hopefully The Hulk (Edward Norton).

It’s good to know that Marvel picked someone who KNOWS ABOUT COMICS (he’s actually written a few), knows how to direct action, and is familiar with the fandom that surrounds the characters. Whedon’s not going into this gig wide eyed and confused. He’s well education in the Marvel universe so he’ll feel a certain responsibility to do right by it.

This might be the first time that I’ve ever wholeheartedly agreed with a decision that Marvel has made. There are no reservations about this. Get Whedon in pre-production, get the story straight, and lets kick the summer competition of 2012 in the balls! Avengers assemble!

The Avengers will hit theaters on May 12th, 2012.

Joss Whedon or Peter Sollett to Direct Runaways?

Runaways isn’t a seventies rock band or a movie adaptation starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, it’s a Marvel comic book. The studio is looking to produce a big screen adaptation of the Brian K. Vaughn property and they have two directors in the running for the job, Joss Whedon and Peter Sollet.

According to Deadline, Sollett whose previous work includes Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist has been named as the lead contender to direct Runaways. They state that he’s currently in negotiations for the film, but at the same time The Playlist is claiming that Joss Whedon is also a possibility. Whedon is no stranger to the series because he did a brief run as the comic’s writer after Vaughn left. Plus he knows a thing two about writing for strong female characters, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “Dollhouse,” and “Firefly” are just a few of his projects that feature women who kick ass.

If you’re unfamiliar with the story of Runaways, Deadline describes it as The Breakfast Club with superheroes. It centers on the children of supervillains who are cursed with evil powers but use them for heroic purposes. The group embarks on a journey to find their heroic origins, while trying to repair all the damage their parents have done.

Nothing against Sollett, but I would love to see Whedon take this story to the big screen. He’s such a great writer and he really knows how to tackle this kind of material. Unfortunately, something tells me that the studio might go with Sollett on this one, which is a shame because Whedon could work some serious magic here.
