Daydream Nation Trailer Features Kat Dennings, No Sonic Youth

In one of the rare instances of an actor working hard (or a picture being delayed) Daydream Nation - which stars Kat Dennings – will open on May 6, the same day as Thor, which also stars Kat Dennings. Can the world have too much Kat Dennings? Can it have too much of her at once? Anchor Bay’s film – which also stars Josh Lucas - is due out on DVD and Blu-ray two weeks later, so Daydream Nation seems to be hitting theaters for contractual obligation. It’s a reasonable premise for a film – new girl sleeps around, questions morality, etc. – one that worked well for Easy A, and is something that could make for a compelling narrative. But the tagline in the trailer “Juno by David Lynch” suggests that this is going to go much darker places than the trailer suggests. Then again the title of the film would seem to be taken from a Sonic Youth song, and the trailer features no Sonic youth, so this could very much be a bait and switch trailer.

This could be the year for Dennings that she breaks out, though it’s hard to think that her role in Thor will be much more than comic relief. And perhaps after Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Dennings had her moment at becoming an A-lister. She’s been passed by Emma Stone, it seems.

Josh Lucas Cast in J. Edgar Hoover Biopic

Clint Eastwood has added another talented actor to his new film J. Edgar. The feature is based on the life of FBI head, J. Edgar Hoover and will star Leonardo DiCaprio as the title character. According to Deadline, he’ll be joined by actor Josh Lucas, who’s just signed on to play an integral role in the film. Find out who…

According to the site, Lucas has been cast as the famous aviator, Charles Lindbergh. He was the father to Charles Lindbergh Jr. who was unfortunately kidnapped and murdered in 1932. The case was one of the biggest that the Bureau of Investigation had to tackle while under the supervision of Hoover.

J. Edgar will cover the head of the FBI and his reign from its creation in 1935 to his death in 1972. The film will be produced by Brian Grazer and has a script written by Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk). Production is expected to begin sometime early this year.

While Lucas has been cast in J Edgar, he’s also being looked at to star in the upcoming camp-fest, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

Adrien Brody, Timothy Olyphant, Josh Lucas Up for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

The search for the next Abraham Lincoln is upon us. No, we’re not talking about for the long awaited Steven Spielberg biopic (Daniel Day-Lewis got that job), we’re referring to the campy Tim Burton produced horror flick, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. That’s a movie we’d all like to see, right? According to Deadline, several actors are currently testing for the title role in the film including Adrien Brody, Timothy Olyphant, and Josh Lucas.

Brody, Olyphant, and Lucas are the most recognizable out of the Lincoln candidates, which includes a mix of stage and international actors such as Benjamin Walker, James D’Arcy, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. Out of this bunch, Brody looks the most like Lincoln, but with a little help Lucas could easily pull it off as well. Olyphant might be a stretch and the other guys seem too young, or too awkward for the part. What do you think?

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a fictionalized creation of the former U.S President which mixes historical events with fantasy. The book was written by Seth Grahame-Smith, who is known for his ability to blend classic figures and properties with old school horror elements. In the book and the film Lincoln is re-imagined as an axe-throwing, highly trained vampire assassin.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is scheduled to hit theaters on June 22, 2012.

Life As We Know It: Movie Review

This weekend Katherine Heigl adds another notch to her romantic comedy belt – and, shockingly, people (chicks) over the age of 16 might actually enjoy it. Life As We Know It, also starring Josh Duhamel, follows the disaster of two single adults becoming guardians to the daughter of their mutual, recently deceased best friends. The Warner Bros. release is directed by Greg Berlanti and opens in theaters nationwide this Friday.

The Plot:

Allison (Hendricks) and Peter (MacArthur) arrange a blind date for their best friends, Holly (Heigl) and Messer (Duhamel). Unfortunately, the doomed couple never actually make it to the restaurant, due to an immediate lack of chemistry – within seconds of meeting they can’t stand each other. A few years later, Allison and Peter are killed instantly in a car accident, leaving their baby Sophie, an orphan. They select Holly and Messer as guardians, forcing the two to painfully inhabit the same space to raise the child.

The Good:

Concept: Most romantic comedies in some shape or form are reminiscent of their predecessors. Let’s be real, there are only so many cheesy, chick-flicky story-lines one can write. Life As We Know It, though, features a surprisingly original concept.
Not All Gooey: There are ample “Aww!” moments to elicit female shrieking and swooning – but the framework of the story is undoubtedly tragic. Holly and Messer are not only coping with the death of their best friends, but they’re immediately tossed into parenthood – a totally foreign/terrifying endeavor for both of them. The silver lining: they hate each other. The “dramatics” are sufficiently overshadowed by good comedy and cheesiness, but still play a substantial role in the film’s makeup.
Not Painfully Predictable: Any moron with half a dozen brain cells can predict that Holly and Messer will clearly end up together. But the inevitable sparks don’t fly until the fourth quarter of the film. You really see them struggle to share space, make collective decisions, and acknowledge their feelings for each other. Berlanti makes them work for it, and the audience wait for it. This build is obviously conducive to a stronger pay off.
Duhamel: The man is a dream boat, that goes without saying. But he’s surprisingly funny, and surprisingly believable. Who knew?!

The Good/Bad:

Heigl: In every romantic comedy Heigl makes the same choices. Don’t get me wrong – it works for chick flicks, but it’d be nice to see a little variation.
Cheese: Again, this is a romantic comedy. Expect everything that comes with that territory.

Overall:

It’s better than your average chick flick – but a chick flick none the less. Decide for yourself.

Rating: 7/10

Josh Lucas Joins Life As We Know It

Some casting news for today centers on the a tale of two Josh’s. According to Variety, Josh Lucas has signed on to co-star in the film, Life As We Know It.The actor will join Katherine Heigl, Transformers star Josh Duhamel, and Mad Men alum Christina Hendricks.

Life As We Know it centers on two single adults whose lives are dramatically changed when their mutual best friends are killed in an accident and name them as the guardians of their daughter. If that’s not depressing, I don’t know what is. There isn’t any real room for romance in this film, or is it? Josh Lucas’ role hasn’t been specified so we’re not sure how he’s going to fit into the story.

There hasn’t been a real clarification about whether or not this will be a romantic comedy or a dramedy. On the surface it looks like it’s a step away from the rom-coms that Heigl has been submersing herself in as of late. But on the other hand, we have two leading men cast alongside her. Unless they hired Lucas to play one of the dead parents, I don’t see how this won’t turn into some love story brought about by tragedy.

Death In Love: Movie Review

Written and directed by Boa Yakin, Death In Love attempts to show three lives that are all destroyed through one horrific event. Starring Josh Lucas, Jacqueline Bisset and Lukas Haas, the story immediately combusts at the very beginning of the film, leaping into a series of one graphic sex scene after another. This films is supposed to be about family and how past actions can lead to horrible consequences; although I got lost in all the sex and too many story-lines. At times it felt more like a soft porno than a film and it made me wonder, “what the hell am I watching?”

Here’s the good, the bad, and the plot…

The Plot:

The opening scene (perhaps the only noteworthy moment in the entire film); starts off in a dark narrow corridor with a young Jewish woman walking away from us. To her left and right, are children crying, casualties and yells of agonizing pain. Before she knocks the door, a German male’s voice tells her to come in. After that, it’s all downhill. What follows is the story about that same young Jewish girl — except she is much older now. She is unhappily married with two sons, both in their early thirties. We follow the life of the oldest son (Lucas), a sharp and “charming” con-artist working in an exploitive modeling agency. After a rough argument with their mother, Lucas decides to help his younger brother (Haas), an awkward pianist with some type of eating disorder, and venture outside their parent’s house and live in an apartment alone. Things get more complicated when Lucas is somehow outsmarted by a younger new business partner (Adam Brody). So we have problems right from the beginning and, well, they never end even after the credits are down.

The Good:

Adam Brody: Brody steals the spotlight with his co-starring role as the “new” business partner. His presence on screen is charming and natural. If you’re a hue Brody fan and must see this movie, I propose you forward only to the scenes with him in it.
The flashbacks: The film flashes back several times into the Mother’s past and through those scenes you are able to understand the Mother’s current attitude and horrible tantrums. Often flashbacks get confusing, but these were well arranged and helpful to the story.

The Bad:

The sex scenes: The problem with the sex scenes wasn’t that there were too many, but that there was no art in them. It was all just — bang bang bang. Done. Perhaps Yakin was trying to show us that sex is just sex, but some of these characters were supposed to be in love and there was no intimacy between them which made the film look more like porn than art.
The nudity: I’ll admit that at times the nudity did feel natural– most of the time, it felt forced and unnecessary, and it simply distracted from the purpose. At times there would be very intense arguments in which one or both of the characters were naked and it was it made is distracting and hard to pay attention to what they were fighting about.
Too Many Stories: This films could be cut into three. The film tried to tell the story of the Mother during the holocaust along with her current situation, the story of Lucas’ struggle with his crazy mother, his job, his sex life, and his relationship with Brody, as well as the solitary life of the younger Brother (Haas). Yankin should have focused on one, so that it felt like one complete thought instead of just throwing a whole bunch of powerful stories at us.
The ending: All I have to say it, “That was so odd!”

Overall:

Where did the guy from Remember the Titans go? Death In Love tries, but it fails. It is one of the hardest most uncomfortable films to watch. The sex scenes are gruesome, and the only thing that stands out is Brody, but maybe it’s just because I miss seeing him in the big screen. Don’t go watch this film, don’t even rent it unless you have to watch it for some sex-ed class.

Rating: 3/10

Josh Lucas Stars in Psycho Inspired Thriller

Later this year a horror thriller named Peacock will enter your local cinema. If the title makes you think of Alfred Hitchcock it should. The film literally borrows about 80 percent of the plot from Psycho with little variation. Peacock stars Cillian Murphy as it’s lead, and Josh Lucas as his best friend. Lucas recently spoke to MTV about the film and it’s Psycho connection saying, “['Peacock' is] what would happen if Bates had basically stayed alive and married himself.”
