Men in Black 3 Trailer Offers One Joke

Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin…as Tommy Lee Jones? That’s the set up from the Men in Black 3 teaser trailer, one that seems to be there to refresh viewers on the world of the Men in Black. Though the rough outline of the plot has been known for a while, this gives a sense of what the film is about, with newcomer Emma Thompson telling the viewers that Jones’s K character has been dead for forty years. Check out the teaser…

It’s a short tease, and one that offers exactly one joke in its running time (at least if you’re not familiar with the premise of the series), but that joke (Brolin’s Jones impression) may be enough to get people interested in seeing the film.

This is a weird teaser in that it’s not very clean – there’s a whole lot of set up for essentially one joke. The movies have been funny, and this covers a lot of back story – perhaps because it’s been a decade since the last picture means that they have to reorient a new generation to the series. And perhaps also with the recently announced reshoots the studio isn’t entirely sure what’s going to be in the finished film. But they do suggest some scale, and that we’re going to see some period detail. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll be some laughs along the way. The film is set to open May 25, 2012.

Josh Brolin to Star in Spike Lee’s Oldboy

Josh Brolin and writer/director Spike Lee have enough respect to quiet naysayers. And that’s exactly what happened when Josh Brolin was cast in Lee’s remake of 2003′s Oldboy. The original is a cult Korean film by Chan-wook Park that won the Grand Prize at Cannes (and is currently in the top 100 films of all time according to IMDb), and originally fans were perturbed that anyone would consider such a remake. But the tide has turned, and there’s new goodwill for the project that comes from Brolin and Lee.

Resentment toward the remake was born mostly of Hollywood snapping up anything Asian and popular after the huge success of The Ring and Martin Scorsese‘s The Departed – a remake of Infernal Affairs – but that cycle of remakes has disintegrated. For a while it seemed like Bong Joon-ho’s The Host was next on the block, but that remake seems to have fallen by the wayside. Sadly, if Lee’s adaptation works, it may clear the way for more remakes.

Brolin was on the shortlist for the project, and recently Christian Bale was mentioned as a lead. The original follows a man imprisoned for thirteen years by an unknown person, and gets out looking for revenge. Though main character appears to be Brolin’s role, the part of the man who imprisoned him is also a substantial part, and could go to someone like Bale.

Josh Brolin, Tim Burton Team Up for The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Oscar nominee Josh Brolin is about to get ugly for his next role. According to THR, the actor will join forces with Tim Burton for a retelling of the classic story The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The last incarnation we saw was in 1997 when Disney painted their pretty picture of the tortured character. Hopefully with Burton and Brolin, we’ll get something a lot closer to the source material.

The trade reports that Warner Bros is developing the project with Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the writing team behind the sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is based on the novel written by Victor Hugo, back in 1831. It centers on “Quasimodo, a deformed and hunchbacked bell-ringer of the Norte Dame cathedral who tragically falls in love with beautiful gypsy named Esmerelda.”

The first feature adaption was in 1905 under the title Esmerelda, and the last was the aforementioned Disney version from the nineties. For years people have been fascinated with the tale of this tortured soul, and now Josh Brolin will put a new spin on the battered protagonist.

Brolin will both star and co-produce the film, while Burton is in early talks to helm. The director is very busy with pre-production for another WB gothic-tale, Dark Shadows. Dun! Dun! Dun!

It’s time for some horseback riding, gun shootin’, mumbling bad-asses in the Coen Brothers most un-Coen Brothers-like film True Grit starring Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. One thing is for sure, if you can understand what they’re saying in this film, you’ll be a fan — but that won’t be easy for ya now, ya hear? Check out our review…

The Plot:

Based on the Charles Portis novel of the same name, True Grit follows a tough U.S. Marshal as he helps a stubborn young girl track down her father’s murderer.

The Good:

The Writing: Even though this is not one of my favorite scripts from the Coens, it’s still miles beyond the majority of screenplays today. Not only are they good at writing amazing one liners, but they’re also able to apply them to the screen extremely well. It’s a good thing they direct their own screenplays because it takes a very interesting mind to understand the complexities and depths of their writing.
Moments of Quiet: The Coen’s biggest strength lies is in what they let go unsaid. This film is extremely sparse, and aside from a few drunken rants and a sassy young girl, the only time the characters really talk is when they have something to say. Though this sounds like an obvious thing, a lot of films have so much unneeded dialogue, it’s nice to see one where every line has its place.
The Writing AGAIN: What is also amazing about their writing is how they create a new language for every film they make. Whether it’s Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading or True Grit, all their characters have a very distinct way of speaking which transports you into a different world and forces you to pay attention so you can be a part of it.
The Acting: Another reason why the dialogue sounds so good is because of the performances in this film. Though Jeff and Hailee are the stars of the show and rightly so, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper and the rest of the cast all put in amazing performances. There literally are no small parts in a Coen Brothers movie and much like their text, every actor has a right to be there.
The Mumbling: You won’t be able to understand every line in this film, so don’t bother leaning over to your significant other and ruining the movie with “what did he just say?” The mumbling is part of it and you’ll come around to it and their way of speaking in time.
The Richness/The Silence: This is not a cliched Hollywood film in ANY way. They’re going to make you wait for the pay off and then change it up on you. They’re going to leave you in silence and they’re going to force you to watch a film that though it is entertaining was not created for entertainment’s sake. It’s a bold move, but well executed.
The Humor: You have many directors trying to make comedies, but despite what genre the Coen’s play in, their films always have a sense of humor that is undeniably funny and more realistic than any comedy routine. This film is no exception, and despite it’s serious tone it will most definitely have you laughing — and sometimes you won’t even know why. They don’t even need a punch line, their timing is so good that it does the work for them.

The Bad:

Horse Violence: I get that it goes with the story, it’s accurate to the character, but damn is it hard to watch.
The Snakes: Though I loved the scene and how it began, without giving anything away, the truth of the matter is that it was a rather inaccurate way for snakes to behave.

Overall:

Not necessarily the brother’s finest work, but for me they always deliver something far superior than almost everything else in theaters. Don’t miss this bad boy.

Rating: 8.5/10

Josh Brolin to Direct and Star in Pitz and Joe

Josh Brolin is one of the most talented actors of his generation. Who would have thought that the headband wearing kid from The Goonies would become one of Hollywood’s most sought after stars 25 years later? He will appear in the highly anticipated Coen Brothers adaptation of True Grit, which opens this Christmas, and after that [according to Variety ] he’s ready to take the next step in his career. He’s going to direct!

The trade reports that Brolin will star, direct, and produce the film adaptation of the play Pitz and Joe. The play “follows the misfortunes of a young man with brain damage from an accident and his sister, who tries to coax him into believing again that life is worth living.” Pitz and Joe was originally written by Dominique Cieri in 1979.

The screenplay will be written by Maya Forbes, whose credits include The Rocker and Monsters vs Aliens. We’re not sure how prepared she is to take on something this heavy but we’ll give her a chance. We’re really interested to see Brolin take on all these different jobs. We hope he gives us something as great as his acting performances.

Extended True Grit Trailer Will Cut You Down

We told you last Friday that a new, extended version of the True Grit trailer would be released earlier this week and here it is! Over at Yahoo Movies they got their hands on the new trailer that features more footage, more characters, and more story. This will definitely be a heavy contender come Oscar season. Watch the trailer below…

The story of True Grit centers on a U.S. Marshal (Jeff Bridges), his sidekick (Matt Damon), and a 14 year old girl named Mattie (Hattie Steinfeld) who tags along as they try and track down her father’s killer. The original film’s point of view was taken from that of Cogburn, while the Coen’s remake we will follow the vantage point of the young girl. The cast also includes Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper in supporting roles. The film is scheduled for release on December 25, 2010.

This movie looks amazing and in typical Coen Brothers fashion it manages to include comedic elements without diluting the drama. The crack Damon makes about Bridges’ eye was delivered with perfection. It’s a nice break amongst all the seriousness that the film entails.

The first official trailer has been released for the Coen Brother’s adaptation of True Grit. The novel previously appeared on the big screen back in 1969 with John Wayne in the lead, but this time Oscar winner Jeff Bridges will wear the eye patch and slip into the role of the rustic Marshal Reuben J. Cogburn. Take a look…

If this movie doesn’t spell Oscar bait we don’t know what does. The trailer is hauntingly beautiful and has the same spirit as the original but adds something more. Even though Matt Damon looks like General Custer in the first shot he’s introduced, he still fits the part of La Boeuf like a glove.

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps: Movie Review

Oliver Stone returns to the big screen with the long awaited sequel to his 1980s hit Wall Street. Money Never Sleeps takes place during the 2008 recession and follows a new and younger group of Wall Street traders. The film doesn’t try to copy the original as much as you might think. Yes, there’s the mentoring of an up and comer by a devious veteran but it also tackles the politics and corruption present in the new millennium. Money Never Sleeps opens a whole new bag of worms.

The Plot:

Money Never Sleeps is set 20 years after the first film and centers on a young Wall Street trader named Jacob Moore (Labeouf), who gets taught some hard lessons in the business. After emerging from his stint in prison, Gordon Gekko has become a popular author and media expert on all things financial. He’s also Jacob’s future father-in-law who helps him take down the corrupt bank CEO, Bretton James (Brolin). In exchange for his services, Moore has to help Gekko repair his estranged relationship with his daughter Winnie (Mulligan). He soon discovers that playing with money is like playing with greed and greed isn’t good, it’s evil.

The Good:

The Cast: Money Never Sleeps is filled with a cast of Oscar winners and nominees led by the cool and collected Michael Douglas. Every actor elevates the other’s performance, which makes the film more watchable and more entertaining. LaBeouf may seem like an odd choice for such a dramatic role but he really brings it and proves that he can hang with the big dogs.
The Cinematography: New York City is shown in the way that would make any outsider jealous. It’s shot beautifully with the architecture being somewhat of a secondary character in the film.
The Wardrobe: All of the characters have money and we can tell. Their dressed from head to toe in the most expensive and tailored clothes. You will walk out of the theater with a sudden desire to hit the mall. The film makes you not only want to look good, but powerful as well.
The Set Design: Everything from the Wall Street offices, to the lofts, to the mansions are crafted with such detail. The set designers make sure that every nook and cranny tells a story about the characters and they do!
Carey Mulligan: Earlier I noted the cast but Mulligan’s performance deserves to be called out. Her portrayal as the long suffering daughter of Gekko and fiancee of Jacob is the heart and soul of the film. She’s the glue that holds both men together whether they realize it or not, and when she breaks the viewer does as well. That’s how good she is.

The Bad:

The Length: The only bad thing about the film is its length. The last 15 minutes could have been cut out. The story seems to have a natural resolve at a certain point but then it throws you a curve ball that then has to be played out. Unfortunately, by that time you’re ready for everything to wrap up.

Overall:

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps is a pleasant surprise. It’s not better than the original but it’s a solid stand alone film.

Rating: 8/10

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps opens in theaters nationwide on September 24th.

Tommy Lee Jones Not Being Replaced in Men In Black 3

Earlier this year we learned that Sony would be producing another sequel in their popular Men in Black series. It was revealed that the original cast and crew would return including Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and director Barry Sonnenfeld but in most sequels they always have to infuse new blood. In this case that would be Josh Brolin, an actor who many fans worried would be taking Jones’ place.

In an interview with MTV, Brolin stated himself that he’s not stealing Jones’ spotlight. “I don’t know what the balance is yet. I’m not replacing Tommy, that I know. There’s more suggestion going on than anything.” From what we’ve gathered Men in Black III will involve some serious time travel. Brolin has been rumored to star as a younger version of Agent Kay (Jones) while Smith’s Jay has been sent back to 1969 to work with him to stop the new bad guy Yaz (Jemaine Clement).

At least now we know that things are pretty much cemented for all three actors. Jones and Brolin previously appeared in the Coen Brothers drama No Country for Old Men, and now they’re at it again.

Josh Brolin to Be Charlize Theron’s Love Interest in Young Adult?

A week ago we reported on the big screen reunion of Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman for a new film called Young Adult. Charlize Theron will star in the feature that has a Never Been Kissed type of vibe that centers on a woman going back to high school and reclaiming her lost love. The latest development surrounding the film has Josh Brolin as a possible candidate to play the object of her affection…

Young Adult centers on a ghostwriter of young adult novels who plots to reclaim her identity. Her campaign involves going back and rekindling a relationship with her high school boyfriend — who’s freshly married, is a new father, and wants no part of her. While she works on her plan, the ghostwriter reengages with high school acquaintances and their experiences in trying to fulfill all those high school hopes and dreams that often get crushed by the realities of life.

In other words, she’s mildly insane and has some stalker tendencies but what guy out there wouldn’t want to be stalked by Charlize Theron? According to Showbiz 411, Brolin may sign on to play her male counterpart. This would be a welcome stretch for the actor because he doesn’t really get to show his great comedic timing in a lot of his films. And have you seen the guy in interviews? He’s hilarious!

Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger Trailer

The theatrical trailer for Woody Allen’s latest film You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger has been released and it features Josh Brolin and some really bad hair. The video made its debut over on Yahoo Movies but we have it right here for your viewing pleasure. Check out Allen’s newest romantic comedy set against a sweeping, urban backdrop. We haven’t seen this type of thing from him before — have we?

Official Synopsis:

After Alfie leaves his wife Helena to pursue his lost youth and a free-spirited call girl named Charmaine, Helena abandons rationality and surrenders her life to the loopy advice of a charlatan fortune teller. happy in her marriage, Sally develops a crush on her handsome art gallery owner boss, Greg, while Roy, a novelist nervously awaiting the response to his latest manuscript, becomes moonstruck over Dia, a mystery woman who catches his gaze through a nearby window. Despite these characters’ attempts to dodge their problems with pipe dreams and impracticable plans, their efforts lead only to heartache, irrationality, and perilous hot water.

The cast of the film includes Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin, Antonio Banderas, Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto, Lucy Punch, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, and Anthony Hopkins.

I don’t know about you but seeing Hopkins play an old man living out some sick Playboy fantasy looks hilarious. And Brolin’s a complete mess here, which is great because he does his best work playing characters at their wits end. It’s also good to see Banderas in a live action role again. I was starting to get used to him as a cat.

Jonah Hex – Movie Review

Despite what you saw in Iron Man 2, this is not the summer of pretty boy superheroes. This weekend, Josh Brolin tackles the role of a slack-jawed, post-Civil War vet who’s got a serious chip on his shoulder in Jonah Hex. The character doesn’t have an artillery filled with the latest guns and gadgets but he does have great aim and a license to kill. Move over Tony Stark there’s a new hero in town and he travels by horse not air…

The Plot:

Jonah Hex is based on the DC Comics property about a disfigured gunman who travels the Old West seeking revenge on the man who killed his family. The film version centers on Hex’s quest to find and stop Quentin Turnbull from causing another Civil War within the United States. Hex is commissioned by President Grant to track Turnbull down and bring him to justice.

The Good:

Josh Brolin: If they put anyone else in this role it wouldn’t have worked. Brolin became Jonah Hex and delivered everything you wanted from the character and more.
The Casting: Besides Brolin, they got several amazing actors to appear in this film. The majority of them were glorified cameos but still entertaining. A few people to look out for are Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Michael Shannon, Aidan Quinn, Wes Bentley, and Tom Wopat. Yes, Tom “Luke Duke” Wopat from “The Duke’s of Hazzard.”

The Bad:

The Story: There’s an overarching story that centers on Hex and Turnbull, which is easy to follow and understandable. But then there’s a whole other subplot that deals with a massive weapon that doesn’t even look like it belongs in the era in which the film takes place. This is fiction and it’s based on a comic but there’s no point in doing everything else by the book and making one thing stick out like a sore thumb.
Special Effects: This movie wasn’t made with Batman or Superman money but a few of the explosions bordered on cartoonish. Some of them could have been done practically without CGI and the effect would have been 10 times better.
The Tone: This wasn’t a hardcore drama, it wasn’t a romance film, and it wasn’t a comedy, it was all of thee above. There’s nothing’s wrong with having multiple genres in one movie if you can balance them correctly but for Jonah Hex that wasn’t the case. It came across as uneven and random.

Overall:

Jonah Hex is pretty mediocre. There’s nothing about this film that would make it standout besides Josh Brolin’s mutilated face and an unnecessarily damp (all the time!) Megan Fox. There are a few things worth watching but nothing too big that you can’t hold out for the DVD.
