Jonah Hex – Movie Review

Despite what you saw in Iron Man 2, this is not the summer of pretty boy superheroes. This weekend, Josh Brolin tackles the role of a slack-jawed, post-Civil War vet who’s got a serious chip on his shoulder in Jonah Hex. The character doesn’t have an artillery filled with the latest guns and gadgets but he does have great aim and a license to kill. Move over Tony Stark there’s a new hero in town and he travels by horse not air…

The Plot:

Jonah Hex is based on the DC Comics property about a disfigured gunman who travels the Old West seeking revenge on the man who killed his family. The film version centers on Hex’s quest to find and stop Quentin Turnbull from causing another Civil War within the United States. Hex is commissioned by President Grant to track Turnbull down and bring him to justice.

The Good:

Josh Brolin: If they put anyone else in this role it wouldn’t have worked. Brolin became Jonah Hex and delivered everything you wanted from the character and more.
The Casting: Besides Brolin, they got several amazing actors to appear in this film. The majority of them were glorified cameos but still entertaining. A few people to look out for are Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Michael Shannon, Aidan Quinn, Wes Bentley, and Tom Wopat. Yes, Tom “Luke Duke” Wopat from “The Duke’s of Hazzard.”

The Bad:

The Story: There’s an overarching story that centers on Hex and Turnbull, which is easy to follow and understandable. But then there’s a whole other subplot that deals with a massive weapon that doesn’t even look like it belongs in the era in which the film takes place. This is fiction and it’s based on a comic but there’s no point in doing everything else by the book and making one thing stick out like a sore thumb.
Special Effects: This movie wasn’t made with Batman or Superman money but a few of the explosions bordered on cartoonish. Some of them could have been done practically without CGI and the effect would have been 10 times better.
The Tone: This wasn’t a hardcore drama, it wasn’t a romance film, and it wasn’t a comedy, it was all of thee above. There’s nothing’s wrong with having multiple genres in one movie if you can balance them correctly but for Jonah Hex that wasn’t the case. It came across as uneven and random.

Overall:

Jonah Hex is pretty mediocre. There’s nothing about this film that would make it standout besides Josh Brolin’s mutilated face and an unnecessarily damp (all the time!) Megan Fox. There are a few things worth watching but nothing too big that you can’t hold out for the DVD.

Rating: 5.5/10

Interview: Josh Brolin for Jonah Hex

Josh Brolin has played his fair share of good guys and bad guys throughout his career and in the DC Comics adaptation of Jonah Hex, he plays a little bit of both. The actor stars as the title character, a vigilante driven by revenge after his family is killed right in front of his eyes. Armed with an arsenal of weapons and a supernatural ability to talk to the dead, Hex is on a mission to avenge their deaths by any means necessary.

When Brolin attended the press day for the film he opened up about the difficulties of playing a comic based character, the torture he went through to put on Hex’s famous face, and the actors who inspired him to take on the role…

It’s no secret that Jonah Hex doesn’t have a massive audience but the comic has been around for years and continues to flourish with its cult fanbase. That type of resilience is one of the reason’s Brolin decided to take on the project. That lack of exposure also allowed him and the writers to take some creative license and change a few things to make it more visually interesting for the movie.

Josh Brolin: I loved the idea that it refused to die. It was a survivalist comic book but it allowed us to take luxuries and do what we wanted to do as long as we had the blessing of the comic book artist. The core of the character is there but then we kind of go off on all these different tangents.

Brolin’s no stranger to working off animated characters. His son is a talented artist who regularly helps him prepare for roles with a pencil and a sketch pad.

JB: A lot of times I’ll do a movie and I’ll go to my son and he’ll sketch out the character. I’ll explain to him, I’ll say ‘This is how I see this character. This is kind of the ambiance of the story,’ and all that and he’ll sit there and he’ll sketch stuff out. Sometimes I can use it and sometimes I can’t, like Grind House I used it and I told him the character and he made the character really fat and I was like, ‘Fuck.’ I was used to spring-boarding from that kind of a place so this was great for me. As fun as it is, as dark as it stems from, it’s good to have people in mind.

One of the biggest adjustments he had to make in terms of the look of Hex was his face. The character is known for having a mutilated jaw and a droopy eye, one of which didn’t make it into the film but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.

JB: We chose to go practical. We did 3 hours of make up a day. We did many different layers. I had a mouth piece that held my mouth all the way back that was attached to the back of my neck and then we did 3 more layers on top of that. Then I walked around with half a mustache and half a beard in New Orleans for 3 months. It was nothing attractive. We actually had the eye, which is in the comic book and I started to get an infection within the hour. I’m not that dedicated.

Even though he avoided the dangers of Hex’s eye, the jaw makeup was just as bad. They worked long hours during the shoot and once he put in the mouthpiece he couldn’t eat until the day wrapped.

JB: On a lot of movies you say, ‘I worked 14 hours a day,’ when really you only worked 6 and you’re in your trailer playing Nintendo the rest of the time. We actually worked 14, 16 hours a day, so I couldn’t eat that whole time. I would stuff myself in the morning and then just drink water throughout the whole day and it was 100 degrees. It was a pain. Would I do it again? Yeah. It’s like having a baby, you know? Now, I look at the end result and I go that’s pretty cool.

Another cool aspect of the film was its cast. The movie is filled with well known veteran actors but one of the most controversial and surprising stars has only been around for a few years. Megan Fox plays Brolin’s love interest in a role that he hand picked for her.

JB: However Megan was perceived, I liked the idea of giving somebody the opportunity that somebody gave me and saying ‘Hey we can go a little further with the acting here.’ Even though we made it fun, we did a lot of different takes where she’s crying, where she’s not crying, there’s somewhat of a dialect there. A generalized bucolic dialect there. When I read some of these articles that she had done and was kind of acerbic and rebellious as she could be, I wanted to see how real that was. Nobody can handle that kind of fame that fast at 22 years old and I thought she was handling it really well. When we met I just wanted to make sure she was the real deal and a scrapper and that she could go head to head with John [Malkovich] and that she could really hold her own. There’s definitely a truck driver mentality there.

As for the relationship between Fox’s Lilah and Brolin’s Hex, Brolin thinks its a serious case of opposites that a attract.

JB: When people like that get together it’s like a Beauty & the Beast thing physically, cosmetically. But then I think the parallel, the kinetic connection is that they’re equally broken. And then there’s also, an older, younger type of thing you know?

Brolin channeled some of his favorite actors to pull off his portrayal of Hex, one of them being the martial arts legend, Jackie Chan.

JB: The last character that I saw that I actually wanted to be because he did almost superhuman things and I just wanted that escape for an hour and a half was Jackie Chan in Rumble in the Bronx. This is my version of that. this is my wanting to live that. It’s my attempt at other people coming into the movie and saying ‘Jonah Hex is really cool. He does these things.’ I want to be that guy for an hour and a half.’ The intention is for you to leave the movie theater and feel a bit puffed up.

Brolin’s arch enemy in the film is Malkovich’s character Quentin Turnbull, a man responsible for murdering Hex’s family. That being said, Brolin had nothing but good things to say about the actor and discussed how he could easily slip in and out of character once the director called cut.

JB: The great thing about John is that he’s so in character but he doesn’t stay in character. We’ll finish a take and we’ll be looking at each other like this [grimacing] and go ‘Grrrrr!,’ and they go cut and he goes (impersonates Malkovich’s soft spoken voice), ‘So um, when are you doing the Woody [Allen] film.?’ There was one take that we did and John said, ‘Um, Josh can you come here for a second?’ and I said, ‘Yeah John, what’s up?’ He said, ‘Can you pull my finger?” I said, ‘Seriously?’ He said, ‘Yeah, just grab my finger and just pull it.’ And I pulled his finger and I heard a crack and I go ‘Fuck man, are you alright?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, I think you broke it but I’m fine.’

There are plenty of deaths and fight scenes in this film but the actor stresses that there’s no gratuitous violence.

JB: I was very against them going PG-13 in the beginning but then I was very, very happy. I think they made the much better decision of going PG-13 because it’s not gratuitous. When you watch it you expect it to be gratuitous and it’s not and I think that’s much more interesting than if it were to be a Grind House kind of thing.

Brolin has plenty of films on the horizon besides Hex, including two that opened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. One of them being the highly anticipated sequel to Wall Street.

JB: I’ve got Woody’s movie that was in Cannes. I’ve got Oliver’s movie Wall Street that was in Cannes and that was something. That was very special to have two movies in Cannes. We got this [Hex] coming out this week, we got True Grit coming out Christmas, Men in Black if it all works out is going to happen. I just sold something to Warner Bros that I’ll direct probably next year and a couple of other projects that are really, really good that I can’t talk about. I’m really, really excited about them.

Interview: Megan Fox for Jonah Hex

This week, Megan Fox steps away from the robots and steps into a corset for her latest film, Jonah Hex. It’s based on the DC Comics character of the same name and features Josh Brolin in the title role. Fox plays his love interest, a prostitute named Lilah who hides more than just money in her bra. She’s an old school bad ass. A 19th century girl from around the way girl who holds her own against John Malkovich and Michael Fassbender.

When the actress sat down at the press day for Hex she discussed everything from why she took the role, the difficulties of the shoot, and why she thinks fanboys will never be pleased with anything she does…

How do you go from running in the desert alongside Shia Labeouf and Optimus Prime to being Josh Brolin’s sidekick in the post-Civil War south? In Transformers her character was a stereotypical beauty with a wild streak but Fox stresses that she’s not playing the same person in Jonah Hex. This isn’t another stereotypical role.

Megan Fox: I don’t really feel like she’s that stereotypical. Perhaps you’re responding to the fact that I’m playing the character, that would sort of make it stereotypical but it’s something completely different than anything I’ve done and no one can accuse me of doing the same thing twice.

She also cleared up any speculation about Hex being a way for her to get away from those giant robots [in Transformers].

MF: I like working on action films or movies that are comic book based and that have this theme because they’re things that I watched and loved as a kid. It wasn’t really about getting away from the robots. I enjoyed making both films.

Her character Lilah is a prostitute who has gone through more than her fair share of men. She keeps them all at an emotional distance with the exception of Jonah Hex. In the film, they don’t delve deep into the character’s relationship so Fox and Brolin had to create their own backstory.

MF: Josh and I had a conversation about what their past relationship could have been. Why she would be so dedicated and so in love with someone who treated her the way that he did. We sort of came up with a backstory between the two of us of why. What things had gone on in the past and why she was so dedicated to him. So loyal.

When it came to the physicality of the film, Fox met her match with an old school prop. She had one of her most difficult days on set when she had to shoot an action scene that didn’t really go her way.

MF: There was one gun fight scene that stunts had been choreographing for a couple of weeks and I showed up and had minutes to get it down and rehearse it. It was really difficult for me to shoot the old style, gunslinger guns because I have tiny, little baby hands and they’re really large and really heavy. Just the physicality of actually having to pull that off was really difficult. It was more intricate.

Fox knows a thing or two about starring in a film that has a die hard fanbase and Jonah Hex is no different. The actress discussed how she deals with the pressure to please the fanboy community.

MF: I love them but it’s impossible to please the hardcore comic book fans because they’ll never be happy no matter what you do. I’m a Lord of the Rings fan and I’ll go on the forums and they’ll complain that Frodo was eating the lembas bread outside of Mordor instead of the Mines of Moria and they get really mad and Peter Jackson and company won like 30 something Oscars for that movie. You can’t focus completely on pleasing them because you’ll never win and then you’re excluding a whole other world of people who weren’t aware of the comic in the first place. I think you have to take some sort of liberties to make it into a live action film or it wouldn’t work.

If Jonah Hex works out, Fox wouldn’t mind doing her own comic movie based on Lilah and her own adventures separate from Hex.

MF: Of course, I mean if that was an opportunity that was presented to me absolutely. I’d love that.

Next on Fox’s agenda is a small indie drama that features her playing a genetic freak. She’s a beautiful woman who has a physical defect that makes her more animal than human.

MF: I have a movie with Mickey Rourke hopefully coming out this fall called Passion Play. It’s an independent right now and I’m really proud of that. It’s sort of a modern film noir. Mickey’s character is a trumpet player. He’s kind of down on his luck and he was a heroin addict. He comes across my character who’s a part of a traveling freak show. She has bird wings that sprouted out of her back when she went through puberty and it’s sort of this very bizarre, strange relationship that they have and it follows them. It’s very tragic.

Fox has been acting since she was a teenager but she just recently became a star. Once all the smoke settles she plans on tackling bigger and better challenges that have nothing to do with being in front of the camera. Even though directing is the next step actors usually take, Fox doesn’t think that job’s for her.

MF: Definitely not directing. I have absolutely no skill set that would suggest that I would be able to do something like that but possibly producing at some point if I were able to. I’d like to get into that.

Josh Brolin, Jimmy Hayward Discuss Jonah Hex Reshoot Rumors

On June 18th Josh Brolin will bring Jonah Hex and his mutilated face to the big screen in Jimmy Hayward’s adaptation of the DC comic. Even though it’s ready to hit theaters today, the film has had a rocky production history. Last December there was word that the cast and crew had to return for reshoots and when it comes to movies, “reshoots” is like a dirty word. It means trouble in paradise or there’s something terribly wrong that needs to get fixed.

While out promoting the film during the Los Angeles press day, Brolin along with Hayward cleared the air and let it be known that Hex wasn’t in terrible shape like everyone claimed. They also spoke about helmer Francis Lawrence and his involvement with the reshooting process…

Josh Brolin: There’s a difference between reshoots and additional shoots. There’s always a perception of ‘Oh is there a problem?’ First of all, who cares? The end result is all that matters. When we saw the initial cut, the base cut we go, ‘Oh wow, there’s a lot more humor than we thought here.’ So maybe it’s not as dark and gritty throughout the whole thing. We can base the movie as dark and then we can find some different colors of levity in all that.

It was more about enhancing what already was. I think that we missed some things during additional shooting that we didn’t realize because tonally there’s no model for this. There’s no base for this. It’s like 3 different genres in one. Is it a Spaghetti Western? Well no, not really. Is it a supernatural movie? No, not really. Is it an action movie? No, not really but there’s elements of all those things. It was kind of like plowing out a completely new genre road and saying ‘OK, now we know what we have. How can we extrapolate on that?

Director Jimmy Hayward chimed in on Francis Lawrence’s involvement in all this:

Jimmy Hayward: Francis came in as a consultant and helped us out. He’s a friend of the family [Warner Bros], a friend of Andrew [Lazar], Akiva [Goldsman], and us and it was a big help.

JB: Mostly he’s somebody who knows scope. I mean Francis, that is the pinnacle of scope. That was very important to us when we realized what we had, the whole color palette, and the whole thing. It’s like wow this can seem much much bigger than it is for the budget that we had.

So there you have it. Lawrence didn’t give Hayward the boot after all. He just came in to “lend a hand.”

New Jonah Hex Theatrical Trailer

If you still feel bad about Megan Fox being replaced in Transformers 3 by an inexperienced Victoria’s Secret model don’t be. Fox has a new movie coming out this summer called Jonah Hex and its latest theatrical trailer has been released over at IGN. It’s based on the DC Comics property of the same name and features Josh Brolin in the title role. Check it out…

The film centers on a disfigured gunman (Brolin) who travels through the Old West kicking ass and taking names later. Fox stars as his love interest who also happens to be a prostitute, while John Malkovich plays the film’s main villain, an older gentleman named Quentin Turnbull who has a serious vendetta against Hex and will stop at nothing to see him dead. Michael Fassbender also makes and appearance as one of the bad guys who has several tattoos on his face. We don’t know what that’s all about.

Don’t forget to watch the first trailer if you haven’t already so you can compare and contrast what you’ve seen so far from the film. The one thing I’ve picked up on are all the bad southern accents. Those things are HORRIBLE!

Jonah Hex is directed by Jimmy Hayward and is scheduled to hit theaters on June 18, 2010.

Over at MySpace they’ve unveiled four new character posters for Warner Bros upcoming release Jonah Hex. the film is based on the DC Comics hero of the same name and stars Josh Brolin as the title character. Along with Brolin these posters feature Megan Fox, John Malkovich, and the amazingly talented Michael Fassbender. Check them out…

Don’t you love the fact that Megan Fox is supposed to be a prostitute in this movie yet she looks clean and unbeaten? Shouldn’t she have dirty teeth, bruises, and be about 30 pounds heavier? She’s got that Pretty Woman complex where hookers look like princesses instead of street urchins.

Jonah Hex is directed by Jimmy Hayward and will hit theaters on June 18th.

Official Jonah Hex Trailer Has Arrived!

Finally after months of waiting, Warner Bros has decided to release the first trailer for Jonah Hex. The film stars Josh Brolin as the comic book hero, who carries a big gun and an even bigger grudge. The trailer will make its theatrical debut in front of this week’s A Nightmare on Elm Street but if you can’t wait another day you can view it right now…

Why is it that every scene with Megan Fox is laced with sexual innuendo? Why can’t her character be a badass woman who just happens to be attractive? Based on this trailer the film doesn’t look that great but we’ve seen worse. A lot of this footage was shown at last year’s Comic-Con and for some odd reason it looked a lot better then than it does now.

Jonah Hex is directed by Jimmy Hayward and will hit theaters on June 18th.

New Jonah Hex Poster

Despite what you might have heard Warner Bros’ Jonah Hex adaptation is still going strong and to prove it the studio has released a new poster. The earlier teasers only featured stars Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, but this time around John Malkovich makes an appearance along with a devious looking Michael Fassbender. Check it out…

Brolin plays the title character, while Fox stars as his love interest who also happens to be a prostitute (no surprise there). Malkovich plays the film’s main villain, an older gentleman named Quentin Turnbull who has a serious vendetta against Hex and will stop at nothing to see him dead.

This poster is not impressive and looks kind of cheap, which is sad because Warner Bros’ comic movies usually have a professional and polished appearance. There’s such a lack of effort coming from the marketing team behind this movie. Even though she’s not an amazing actress Megan Fox could be somewhat of a draw for them, but they don’t even highlight her name on the poster.

Also, you can barely see Michael Fassbender in the background, who appeared in last year’s Inglourious Basterds, and Will Arnett’s not even pictured! Do they not know how many Arrested Development fans would be all over this if they knew he was involved? We’re not sure what direction the studio is going to take but it looks like Hex might be a box office bomb.

New Jonah Hex Footage Proves Film Still Exists

Jonah Hex will be released in theaters on June 18th yet the promotion for it has basically been non-existent. The first trailer for the film won’t drop until the end of this week and besides a few mediocre posters we’ve got nothing. Warner Bros. obviously wants Hex fans to know that they haven’t forgotten about him because a commercial for the trailer’s SyFy Channel premiere has already debuted online.

Is there a particular reason why within this video’s limited amount of time the editors felt it was necessary to show a damp and gleaming Fox in a corset? With that ridiculousness aside, we also get to see John Malkovich looking creepy (what he does best), and Brolin letting off a few rounds on horseback.

The Jonah Hex trailer will debut on the SyFy cable network on April 29th during their primetime line-up. There’s not much to say about Josh Brolin’s performance as the mutilated anti-hero or his co-star Megan Fox because the clip only lasts a good 11 seconds. With Brolin’s background we’re sure his acting will be top notch and as for Fox, she’ll probably do what she does best which is sit there and look pretty.

This has nothing on the footage that was shown at last year’s Comic-Con. It appears to be rather mediocre looking, which blows because Brolin has the chops to be a steady leading man but he needs a few hits under his belt. And with the crappy marketing for Hex how is that supposed to happen?

New Jonah Hex Photo Gets Up Close and Personal

Warner Bros has finally decided to kick their marketing campaign for Jonah Hex into high gear. Last Friday we learned that the film’s first trailer will debut next week in front of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and now the studio has released a high quality photo featuring the title character. Check out Josh Brolin and the rest of his disfigured face below…

If you can’t wait to watch the theatrical trailer on April 30th, you can catch it one night earlier on TV courtesy of the SyFy cable network. A promo is set to air during their primetime lineup on the 29th so keep your eyes peeled for that one. We’ve also heard through the grapevine that a new poster will be released around the same time, which is great news because this film needs all the promotion it can get.

Jonah Hex is scheduled to hit theaters on June 18th and co-stars Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Will Arnett and Michael Shannon.

Hopefully Warner Bros keeps this stuff coming that way Hex will have somewhat of a chance at making a decent earning at the box office (fingers crossed).

Jonah Hex Trailer Attached to Nightmare on Elm Street

The DC Comics property Jonah Hex will be hitting the big screen on June 18th and we have yet to see any real promotion for it. All we’ve got are two mediocre posters and that’s it. With no teaser or theatrical trailer how does Warner Bros plan on making this movie a success? After a year of nothingness, 2 months before the film’s release they’ve just now decided to put out a trailer (face palms).

Update: According to Collider the first trailer for the film will debut the night of April 29th on the SyFy network and is expected to appear online shortly after.

According to Vulture, a spokesperson from the studio assured them that the first trailer for Jonah Hex will be attach to this month’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, which opens on April 30th. They also claim that the film will be completed on time in order to make its June release. This is a direct contradiction of the statements that were given by one of the movie’s composers Brent Hinds, the guitarist and singer for the band Mastodon who were hired to work on the soundtrack.

“What I’ve seen so far doesn’t seem to be finished to me,” says Hinds, adding, “I’d heard a little rumor: ‘This shit ain’t gonna be ready.’ But then again, Warner Bros. is such a fucking bastard. They’re like, ‘The shit comes out on the day it’s supposed to.’

The singer and his band have gone back and forth with the studio rerecording the score even though they initially finished last fall. This is just another monkey wrench to throw into the production that’s been plagued with casting issues and reshoots. They need to light a fire underneath their marketing team because Jonah Hex could turn out to be a huge flop. People need to know it’s coming. We saw a trailer for it back at Comic-Con that looked perfectly fine so there’s no reason for this type of delay.
