Just when you thought Vegas movies were all about young people living it up à la The Hangover, something comes around the corner to make you think again–say, Morgan Freeman joining Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas for a Grumpy Old Men meets The Hangover comedy, to be directed by Jon Turteltaub (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) from a script by Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love). How awesome does that sound?

This week Disney’s bringing out the big guns to combat the blockbuster competition in the form of Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, and Mickey Mouse — sort of. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is based on a segment from the classic animated film Fantasia that featured Mickey as a young and eager student to an all powerful wizard. In this adaptation, Baruchel plays the apprentice to Cage’s sorcerer in a film dominated by glossy special effects, family humor, and a swollen score.

On July 14th director Jon Turteltaub’s latest film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice will enter theaters with a heavy weight on its shoulders and no we’re not talking about its competition — Inception. Apprentice is based on one of the most memorable sequences from the Disney animated classic Fantasia, which starred Mickey Mouse, mops, brooms and a whole lot of soap and water. During the recent Los Angeles press day for the film, Turteltaub talked about bringing magic back to modern audiences, casting his sorcerers, and the one power he’d love to have more than anything in the world!

The first theatrical trailer has been released for Jon Turteltaub’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The film stars Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer in question and Jay Baruchel as his apprentice. In all honesty after watching the footage a couple of times the movie looks mediocre, but it does have some good parts.
