This week in DVD and Blu-ray brings one of Oscar’s biggest winners – albeit mostly in technical awards – with Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo, and Johnny English Reborn, which is best known for coming out in theaters and playing there for a while. It’s a weak week for releases, though Criterion has gifted us with one of Louis Malle’s best, and a classic from Fritz Lang. And Johnny English.

October is the perfect time for costumes, candy corn and Paranormal Activity 3. The sequel of the sequel blew away competition this weekend at the box office, opening with an estimated $54 million. The horror film broke the record for best fall opening ever, a title that previously belonged to Jackass 3D. Other new big releases, The Three Musketeers and Johnny English Reborn. underperformed.
The Three Musketeers didn’t land at No. 2 like we expected, instead the remake came in at No. 4 with $8.8. million. The British sequel Johnny English Reborn performed well overseas with gross of &104.5 million, but failed to make an impact in the U.S. and brought in only $3.8 million. Check out the numbers.

Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as the clueless English spy in Johnny English Reborn. The original Johnny English was released in 2003 and earned an impressive sum of $160 million around the globe, though only $28 million coming from the U.S. Will the sequel rack up some dough in the states the second time around?
Chances are that fans of Mr. Bean and families will show up to support this child-friendly film and probably enjoy doing so. Johnny English Reborn travels the globe, jumping from London to Hong Kong to Switzerland, and tells us the story of English’s return to MI7. There’s an impressive cast involved that could’ve easily been cast in an actual James Bond flick. So, with that in mind, let’s see if it was necessary to reborn this Johnny English.

Going into Halloween, Paranormal Activity 3 has the prime slot, with ten days left to generate horror-filled bucks at the box office. It’s got a weak field competition, as it should easily trump the leftovers, and the newer films. Both The Mighty Macs and Johnny English Reborn appear to be contractually obligated releases, while The Three Musketeers seems dusty and cheap. Let’s take a look at the box, shall we?

Rowan Atkinson has one of the best and most memorable faces out there. With a slight change of expression he can go from serious to goofy, from Mr. Bean to Johnny English. Eight years ago, Atkinson gave life to Johnny English, a spy parodying, as Atkinson would say, Roger Moore‘s James Bond. English director Oliver Parker, whose credits include An Ideal Husband, The Importance of Being Earnest and Dorian Gray, took on the task of reinventing this outrageous character by adding a cast that he imagined would actually be cast in a Bond film. We got to talk to both Atkinson and Parker about Johnny English’s humor style, the film’s tone and more. Check it out.
