At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, the large ballrooms, typically reserved for panels discussing TV programs, have been outrageously overcrowded, with lines leading people almost a mile away from the convention center itself. Meanwhile, the cavernous Hall H, used to draw in big crowds for large studio announcements, has been surprisingly accessible, and sometimes even sparsely attended. I’m certainly not complaining, because while 25,000 people stand out in the sun hoping to make it into a 4,000 person room and catch a glimpse of the cast from Big Bang Theory, we got to hear indie auteur Robert Rodriguez make a handful of announcements about his future, in a shockingly intimate setting. John Carter is a big expensive question mark. It stars Taylor Kitsch - who gave a breakout performance on the TV version of Friday Night Lights - and is directed by Andrew Stanton, who is best known for his work on Pixar animation. The material by Edgar Rice Burroughs has been floating around for a while, and at one point Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News was attached as a producer, and both Kerry Conran and Jon Favreau were on it for a while. Over the past couple weeks, Pixar’s upcoming 3D, CGI feature John Carter of Mars has been in the news due to the change of its release date. It was originally set to be a summer blockbuster, but was moved up March 9, 2012. That means director Andrew Stanton and his production team have less time to make the finishing touches on the digital feast. Over at MTV, they spoke with Stanton who gave a status update on the film’s progress, and he revealed what we can expect from his live action adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic.

Walt Disney Pictures have announced the release dates for two of their most anticipated features, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and John Carter of Mars. Both will be released in 2012 and are expected to be major tentpoles for the studio. The scheduling marks an interesting change of events for Frankenweenie, which was previously set to hit theaters in 2011.

The upcoming adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars, has a cast filled with established and up and coming talent. One of the film’s more familiar faces will be that of Willem Dafoe, who plays Carter’s sidekick in the film. Too bad he may be unrecognizable, since he’s playing an alien warrior. The actor recently spoke to the AICN, about his role in John Carter and revealed, that his character has four arms and is 9 foot tall!
