With The Grey outperforming expectations, Joe Carnahan has finally made a box office hit. And like any hot director he’s already lining up his next project. The L.A. Times says that next film is a remake of Death Wish. As they’ve made two pictures together, it seems likely that the first person to be asked to star is Liam Neeson, but everything seems tentative at this juncture.

The 1974 film Death Wish cemented Charles Bronson reputation as a badass, and is his cinematic legacy (partly because he appeared in the film’s four sequels). The movie also spawned imitators – though it owed a debt to Dirty Harry – with such films as 1982′s Fighting Back through to films like 2007′s Death Sentence and The Brave One owing much to the original. But remaking it is easy as the premise is so cut a dry: a man experiences enough violence that he goes vigilante.

That said, we live in a different culture. New York is a much cleaner city than it used to be, and though there’s numbers of alleys that probably shouldn’t be walked down at night, America is no longer as obsessed with the dangers of gangs and thug violence as it once was. On top of that vigilantism is a fascistic by nature and can often be coded racist, or become absurd due to political correctness. If Carnahan does take the project, it’s going to be an interesting minefield.

Do you want to see Liam Neeson shoot some punks?

Liam Neeson has re-teamed with The A-Team director Joe Carnahan for The Grey and it looks to be an adventure. The film tells the story of oil riggers who survive a plane crash, and who are forced to survive in the wilderness and battle the nearby wolves. What looks to be a mixture of Alive and The Edge has at least one advantage – the trailer shows Neeson going up against a wolf wearing broken bottles on his hand. The trailer packs a punch, check it out.

The January 27 release date suggests that they’re going to try for another January/Taken-style success, and perhaps this is the film to recapture that magic (last year’s Unknown is probably best forgotten). These films seem to another story of survival that deals with what’s in a man’s heart, and the will to live and all that.

After years of developing projects only to see them evaporate, it’s also good to see Carnahan working steadily. So many of his former projects had gone through the rounds and died on the vine. Those must have been heartbreaking an include an adaptation of the James Ellroy novel White Jazz to star George Clooney and an adaptation of Lawrence Block’s A Walk among the Tombstones to star Harrison Ford. Perhaps teaming with Neeson is the best thing for Carnahan, as Neeson has been reborn as an action star since Taken.

What’s your favorite Liam Neeson role?

Even though The A-Team wasn’t a runaway hit like many of us thought it would be, it didn’t sour the relationship between director Joe Carnahan and star Liam Neeson. The duo plans on working together again on another project according to Deadline. The film is called The Grey, and it’s a thriller set against the backdrop of the Alaskan tundra. Just thinking about that makes us shiver!

The Grey was recently green-lit and is expected to start production next week with a cast led by Neeson that features Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Nonso Anozie, and Joe Anderson. The story will follow an unlucky group that “gets stranded by a plane crash right in the hunting zone of a pack of rogue wolves on the frozen Alaskan tundra.” If that doesn’t spell terror we don’t know what does.

The shoot will take place in Vancouver, and the director thinks the frigid weather will help the cast deliver more believable performances. He said, “In a way, it’s great, because it beats the shit out of the cast and that suits the storyline.” Filming will last for about 40 days and it will follow a typical indie style schedule. Carnahan admits that he hasn’t experienced anything like it since he worked on 2002′s Narc.

What do you think of Neeson and Carnahan reuniting for The Grey? What do you think of the premise?

This past weekend a lot rumors sprung up regarding 20th Century Fox’s reboot of the Fantastic Four. Over at ComicBookMovie, they’ve been following the latest developments surrounding the film and they’ve discovered some big casting news. How big you ask? How about Bill Compton, John McClane, and Harry Potter big!

First off, Stephen Moyer who plays Bill Compton on “True Blood” is said to be up for the role of Dr. Doom. He’s the Fantastic Four’s arch nemesis who was previously played by Julian McMahon. Apparently, he’s the lead candidate to play the character and an offer has been sent out to him. In the film Dr. Doom will be shown as “the ruler of Latveria and a master of the mystic arts.”

Next we have Bruce Willis, who may or may not voice The Thing. Unlike the previous FF films, the rock-like hero will appear as a CGI character who’ll be voiced by an actor. In this case, that actor could be Willis. They claim that they want him to lend his voice and “stand in for few, brief scenes the character appears in human form during the opening credits.” Willis doesn’t come cheap, and they haven’t put out an official offer for him just yet.

That brings us to the directors. Three names have been mentioned on a shortlist to helm the film including The A-Team’s Joe Carnahan, Ninja Assassin’s James McTeigue, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows‘ David Yates. Who will they choose?

According to the site, the story for the film “tells a more dramatic tale of Marvel’s first superhero family, and will introduce audiences to a bevvy of characters not yet seen on film.” They also claim that next to Doom, the Silver Surfer is another character who’ll return for the reboot. This is a lot to take in for one movie, but like we said, it’s been a busy weekend.

What do you think of the latest news surrounding Fantastic Four? Who should star? Who should direct?

I love it when an action film comes together! Despite the fact that this movie continually reminded me of Team America, it’s a solid piece of entertainment. With all the explosions, flying tanks, witty lines and references you’re hoping for, it’s pure cheesy fun. Out of all the action movies that we’ve had this summer, this is the first that is pure entertainment from start to finish (don’t shove Iron Man 2 in my face, it’s a different type of film).

Find out more about The A-Team below…

The Players:

Director: Joe Carnahan

Writers: Joe Carnahan, Brian Bloom and Skip Woods

Based off TV Series By: Frank Lupo and Stephen J. Cannell

Cast: Liam Neeson (Hannibal), Bradley Cooper (Face), Jessica Biel (Charisa Sosa), Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson (B.A. Baracus), Sharlto Copley (Murdock), Patrick Wilson (Lynch), Gerald McRaney (General Morrison), Henry Czerny (Director McCready) and Yul Vazquez (General Javier Tuco)

Cinematography by: Mauro Fiore

Music: Alan Silvestri

The Good:

Sharlto Copley: After District 9 everyone was wondering what Copley would do next and if he could really act. He may have blown us all away with his precious performance, but that was in his native accent and with his long time friend Neill Blomkamp behind the camera. So could he pull off an American (fuck yeah!) action film? The answer: Hell yes! In fact he was show stopper. He made the film fun. He’s just as good in this film as he was in District 9, only this time he’ll have you laughing your ass off. Not only did he tackle the accent like a pro, but he also managed to completely embody the character and transform himself. It’s like he has the magical ability to bring quality to action films!

The Team: Across the board, the boys playing the A-Team seemed to really take over their roles and embody the characters (despite the one mentioned below). They had great chemistry together and really helped enhance one another’s performances.

The Tone: There’s no doubt that there will be moments when the Team America theme jumps into your head with all the over the top America – (fuck yeah!) music. The good news is that Carnahan seemed to have a strong grasp on what he was going for and really stuck with one over the top, ridiculous tone for the entire film. It was able to hold some suspense without ever becoming too serious and always seemed aware of what it was trying to accomplish – entertainment.

The Music: It might not be remembered, but it really helped drive home the tone of the movie and kept it light-hearted and fun in moments that could have become too dark.

The Bad:

Too Much Explaining: I get that the A-Team is all about “when a plan comes together” but I don’t always want to listen to every single plan come together in detail. Although I love listening to Neeson’s voice narrate the film, it was a bit excessive and not always necessary.

Rampage: Let’s be honest, out of all of the characters Mr. T (being alive and all) was the hardest one to watch on screen. No one could really ever recreate Mr. T’s performance and although Rampage may have had the physic, he didn’t quite have the presence needed to embody the character.

Overall:

Leave your brain at home, buy some popcorn and enjoy the ride!

Rating: 8/10

The A-Team hits theaters June 11th!

Last week, we sat down to a press conference with the director of The A-Team Joe Carnahan along with cast members, Liam Neeson (Hannibal), Bradley Cooper (Face), Sharlto Copley (Murdock) and Jessica Biel (Sosa) to talk about how the plan came together (so cheap – I know). I should mention that Rampage Jackson, the man who plays B.A. Baracus was also in attendance, but he didn’t really say much — in many ways his large sunglasses and physique said all it needed to.

Joe was extremely forthright and one of the first things he said was that the reason he made the movie was for money, the gang talks male bonding and why they all love their character and more below…

Joe, the studio had been working on this for years, but the plan wasn’t coming together until they started talking to you. What, in your mind, did it all come together to say that this movie could work?

Joe Carnahan: I was broke. That was job one. It was one of those situations where I looked at it, I was not the biggest fan of the show as a kid. I think that probably helped because I didn’t have all of these things I thought I had to pay homage to. Brian Bloom and I we sat down to write and for all the 15-years of all the scripts that [the studio] had, we found a central plot device in five-minutes on google. It wasn’t like a tremendous heavy lifting, we literally went on google and found out that Sadam Hussein robed the central bank of Iraq, 24-hours before Shock and Awe, literally had this guy going with a stick-up note and say, ‘I want 600 million in Euros, 400 million in, you know.’ And I thought, and we actually had a copy of the letter. I thought it was a great way to start. If anything that was the moment of inspiration. I went, ‘Okay, we can probably make this work.’

Bradley, this is your first big action. The fact that you saw this as a kid, did that make it easier for you this your first big action picture?

Bradley Cooper: Well there weren’t a plethora of action movies that were coming to me and I fought for this. The reason I wanted to do it was Joe Carnahan and Liam Neeson were attached. I asked for a meeting with you (Joe) and we met and we literally hit it off. We talked for like two and a half hours. It felt like five minutes and you gave me the script. You took me over to Jules (Daly), the producer, then you gave me the script. I texted you the next day and I said “I gotta do the guy” and you were like, “Alright, bro’, let’s do this.” It was a testament to Joe fighting for me to get it because this was before Hangover came out or anything.

Joe Carnahan: I just remember you making a joke saying $262 domestic bro, that’s all I’m saying (laughs).

Bradley Cooper: 274… (laughs).

With films like this it sometimes feels like the cast is straining to have the rapport on the screen. You really had great rapport onscreen. How did you cast? What did you do to get that rapport or did it just happen magically?

Joe Carnahan: For me, I think a lot of what my process is, at least directorially, is what we all did. We had a number of dinners and we watched the fights at Liam’s house and it was all this stuff we did before the cameras rolled and after the cameras rolled. And to me, it’s a pet peeve of mine, I can look at a movie and look at a scene and say immediately, ‘Okay, these people met each other a half hour before call.’ I don’t think you get the best out of people [when that happens]. You need to know someone socially to have an idea of them and this is why you see I have great affection, warmth and love for these guys because they became my friends. I think that if you’re only looking at it in a strict professional sense, then you miss the better part of it, which is at the end of the day it’s wonderful to make a movie but it’s better to make friends, and some of these people will be my friends for the rest of my life – probably not Rampage but we’ll get to that later. (Laughs)

Liam Neeson: We got along with each other and I think obviously there’s a lot of that hoping that it will work when the camera starts rolling and it did. It was just an ease and a generosity between us and something clicked. We all liked each other and liked being with each other and looked forward to going to work every day. It was as simple as that and as complex as that too.

Bradley Cooper: And it made it easy because when the four of us were together we were either doing something where we couldn’t see each other because we were doing action or we were locked in the sardine can of a tank or a helicopter for six hours or 15 hours. We benefited from the fact that we all got along. Everybody is so different, as the characters are, but really the four of us couldn’t be more different and that’s kind of wonderful.

Joe Carnahan: Jessica (Biel), why do you love all of us?

Jessica Biel: Isn’t it obvious? (Laughs) I have to say I had an incredible experience on this movie. Clearly everybody loves each other. It was literally like being around 5 older brothers. I was tortured and loved and cared for and picked on as I should have been. It was a beautiful experience.

Liam, you suddenly have a whole new action career that’s popped up, why did you accept the role?

Liam Neeson: Well I was broke too. (Laughs) I was just very deeply chuffed that I’d be considered for it. I did this film, Taken, that’s given me a whole new lease on life at the age of 58. So it was great to flex those different muscles if you know what I mean. When I met with Joe, I loved him. I thought the script was very, very clever and quite intricate. It was a no brainer for me.

How do you see yourselves similar and different from each of the characters that you play and what quality would you like to take from them?

Bradley Cooper: I loved Face. We created sort of a childlike enjoyment of what he did. He’s the first guy and last guy out and he’d die for his friends in a heartbeat. At my greatest, I’d be one-eight of Face. I really loved him. I loved playing that guy.

Sharlto Copley: The reason I ended up being an actor was that my buddy that put me in District 9 knew that I did different voices and different characters with my staff as a business executive or company owner. So, I was certainly able to draw on a lot of aspects of myself and then the interesting thing about the character which on the one hand is very comedic, it was just interesting to actually see.

What I would take away from it is probably there’s a likeness with which when you view the world through those kind of eyes, nothing is actually as serious as you might think. If you’re gonna go down in a plane or in any type of vehicle, and you know you’re going to die, for example, Murdock would probably die laughing. On the one hand, it’s kind of funny to watch — but if you really think about what that means, it’s kinda cool. I would love to be able to say that if I knew my plane was going down, your choice is die in a state of complete terror or just let go completely and go out laughing — It’s weird. It’s kind of a humbling character to play in a way in that sense.

Liam Neeson: Well these guys know no fear and that’s really interesting. I mean, I’m scared when I wake up in the morning. Every day is a tale but I won’t get into that. It’s interesting the scenes these guys do. It’s like they actually do — they are not scared and that’s an amazing quality I think. I’d love to have that quality in real life.

Jessica Biel: I think I feel similarly to what Bradley was saying about his character. If I could be an eighth of her, that would be amazing. I feel like we share a similar quality with I guess ambition and career, drive. I feel like I’m probably quite ambitious and so is Charisa Sosa. But she also has that quality of not being afraid and of being an adrenaline junkie. I share that a little bit but that no fear, balls to the walls quality that all of these characters share, and the people in real life who do these jobs have those qualities. They’re not very serious people. They’re wildly outrageous and fun and smart and witty. To be like that, I would kill to be like that.

That’s all for now! You can see the The A-Team in theaters June 11th!

A new theatrical trailer has been released for this summer’s big screen adaptation of The A-Team. The film is based on the cult TV show of the same name and features a cast led by veteran actor, Liam Neeson. The more we see from the film the more I’m convince that it will be awesome, campy fun. Plus there’s explosions galore and isn’t that what The A-Team‘s all about? Check out the latest trailer…

The premise of the film follows the same plot of the series except everything’s been pushed back about 25 years. Three of the four characters in question obviously didn’t serve in Vietnam because with the exception of Neeson, none of them where born back then. This follow up to the first trailer is filled with more random explosions and unfortunately more Jessica Biel. I could definitely do without her in this movie, but it’s not about what I want.

There are a few homages to the original series that are great to see like B.A. Baracus’ knuckle tattoos that say “Pity and Fool” on each hand. The old theme song also appears on more than one occasion at the beginning and the end of the trailer. It’s good to see that they highlight Murdoch’s partial insanity, and Sharlto Copley is pulling off his southern accent a lot better than I thought he would.

Check out the trailer and the poster below…

The A-Team is directed by Joe Carnahan and debuts in theaters on June 11, 2010.

The A-Team trailer has arrived a little early, and we have the Canadians to thank for it. According to /Film, The Film Stage noticed that a copy of the movie’s first trailer leaked online through a Canadian newspaper site. The footage was released today in theaters, but just in case you can’t see it on the big screen, we have it right here…

Joe Carnahan‘s adaptation of the 80′s TV show The A-Team features an interesting and talented cast. Up until today all we had were a few pictures to drool over, and now we have a cool new trailer. After viewing it a few times we’ve got a good idea of what Carnahan’s version of A-Team will be like — crazy stunts, creepy laughs, and even a glimpse of Bradley Cooper‘s rock-hard abs. Sure, the narrator makes the trailer sound a bit corny and old school, but there’s something about Liam Neeson that keeps me on the edge of my seat.

The A-Team is set to hit theaters on June 11th.

What do you think of the first trailer for The A-Team? Does the film look above or below your expectations?

It’s finally here! The first official photo of the main cast from The A-Team, and it looks a lot better than I thought it would. It features Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Faceman, Rampage Jackson as B.A. Baracus, and Sharlto Copley as Murdoch. My jaw is literally on the floor right now, you have to take a look at the entire photo!

Check out the cast from The A-Team...

Liam Neeson is really working it as Hannibal. I knew he was a good actor so his talent was never in question, it was his look that had me worried. After seeing this photo, those doubts have been put aside. He does resemble Ralph Fiennes in the face here, but that’s not a major issue. He looks great as the leader of the team, as does everyone else.

I’m still on the fence regarding Rampage, but that could change once I see a trailer. I just need to hear him recite a few lines of dialogue.

The A-Team is directed by Joe Carnahan and is scheduled for released on June 11, 2010.

Another set photo from Joe Carnahan‘s The A-Team has popped up online, and this time it’s a solo shot of Rampage Jackson. The former MMA fighter takes over the role of B.A. Baracus that was originally portrayed by Mr. T in the 1980′s TV series. I must say the following image may hurt your eyes, so try not looking directly at it because the mohawk is in full effect people.

Check out Rampage as B.A…

Even though Mr. T’s B.A. wasn’t the buffest guy in the world he maintained a pretty healthy figure, so why does it look like Rampage has put on a few “bad” pounds in this photo? Didn’t he just retire from the UFC, did he fall off the wagon that quick? Even though he’s not laced in excessive gold chains, the mohawk stands out like a sore thumb. I’m looking forward to seeing more photos from the other characters in this movie, especially Liam Neeson‘s Hannibal.

The A-Team is scheduled to hit theaters on June 11, 2010.

A few weeks ago, several websites posted a photo of the van from the upcoming Joe Carnahan production of The A-Team. That may have excited some of you, but here at ScreenCrave, we wanted to bring out the big guns. How about a photo of the actual cast in full costume and in character? That’s right, over at ComingSoon they posted a behind the scenes photo of Faceman, Hannibal, Murdoch, and B.A. Baracus on the set of the film.

Take a look at the full sized photo of The A-Team…

I am pleasantly surprised by this photo. In the beginning stages of the film’s development I was very skeptical, but this could actually work. Liam Neeson has Hannibal’s gray hair, and Sharlto Copley looks like a spitting image of Dwight Schultz’ Murdoch, he’s even got the hat! Bradley Cooper and Rampage Jackson also bring the old school look of Faceman and Baracus to life.

My only concern is Copley’s ability to do an American accent and do it well. From the looks of it he has the spirit of the character down, but we need his voice to follow suit. I can’t wait until the trailer is released, the original theme music needs to make an appearance somewhere in this film.

What do you think of the first cast photo from the A-Team?

A few weeks ago we heard rumors that The Hangover star Bradley Cooper was in talks to star as Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck in the upcoming feature adaptation of the 1980′s TV series, The A-Team. His casting seemed somewhat plausible, but for the most part people dusted it off as pure speculation. Now here’s some news that will really throw you for a loop, according to Variety Liam Neeson is in talks to star in the film as Col. John “Hannibal” Smith!

If you’re like me Neeson’s casting is completely out of left field. The article goes on to confirm that Bradley Cooper is indeed negotiating to star as “Faceman” a role originated by Dirk Benedict. As far as the story goes it looks as if director Joe Carnahan and producer Ridley Scott are sticking with the outline from the show. Four war vets wrongly accused of a crime, go into hiding, and turn into guns for hire to make ends meet. Even though their sticking with the same story it will have a different vibe. The vision for this A-Team will be closer to Mission: Impossible or Ocean’s Eleven.

The A-Team is set for a June 11, 2010 release, with production beginning late this summer. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I absolutely adore Liam Neeson, and I think he could act in anything. Yet, I’ve never thought of him as someone who would do an adaptation of a campy eighties TV series. I can understand that they’re going for a more serious tone, but I don’t trust it. The screenplay was “polished” by Carnahan and Brian Bloom, but it was written in it’s entirety by Skip Woods. That’s the same guy who penned the script’s for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and X-Men Origins: Wolverine! That’s one film that looks bad, and another film I know is bad.
