Police Academy To Be Remade And Bruce Almighty To Get Sequel

At one time, Jim Carrey could walk away from a Bruce Almighty sequel. But after a couple years of misfires and modest grosses in pictures like Yes Man, A Christmas Carol and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, it seems that he’s willing to return to one of his most successful films. Variety reports that the scribes of Yes Man have been hired to pen a sequel to Bruce Almighty. In other depressing comedy news, Entertainment Weekly reports that New Line has hired Scott Zabielski to helm their Police Academy reboot.

Bruce Almighty getting a “real” sequel (after the disappointing and hugely expensive Evan Almighty) is a case of striking while the iron is cold, but when the original made nearly a half a billion worldwide, it’s easy to see why Universal would be willing to give it another go. There’s no great story to be told or retold here, but just the same – money.

The big question with Police Academy (besides “why?”) is if it’s going to be R-rated like the original, or PG or PG-13 like its sequels. The first film was more in the spirit of the popular R-rated SNL-centric comedies of the time, like Stripes and Animal House, but that got toned down after the film became a franchise. R-rated comedies are back in vogue, so either way is possible. The Vegas odds on Steve Guttenberg getting a role (money would be on him playing Commandant Eric Lassard) is 50/50.

‘Dumb And Dumber 2′ Is Happening

Oh for the love of—look, Hollywood, this has got to stop. Seriously. We need to huddle up here and talk this out. This is not necessary. The world does not need a sequel to a 17 year old Jim Carrey film. Really, it doesn’t. The last time this happened, we got Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls, ok? So, to recap, please don’t do this—we do not need Dumb and Dumber 2.

Unfortunately, Hollywood disagrees.

Now that the Farrelly brothers have wrapped up their oft-discussed and highly unnecessary Three Stooges film, rumors have begun to rumble that they are moving to their next project, a not often discussed and even more unnecessary Dumb and Dumber sequel. And guess who else is down for it? Jim Carrey. And since his latest string of films haven’t exactly set the world on fire, it looks like the man who made a name for himself by talking from his anus will return to that comedy well, doing all that weird rubber-faced stuff that was funny in 1994 when you were 12 years old.

The Farrelly brothers have also stated that they plan to direct the film, and that “Sean Anders and John Morris, whose credits include Hot Tub Time Machine, Sex Drive, and the upcoming Adam Sandler comedy I Hate You Dad,” will pen the script. Oh, good. This just sounds better and better.

Kathy Griffin Spoofs The Jim Carrey/ Emma Stone Video In Clip For Justin Bieber

Never one to not nip at the heels of larger pop culture figures in order to expand her own name brand recognition, Kathy Griffin has now responded to the hyper-creepy/ sorta funny but still creepy video Jim Carrey released yesterday, in which he professed his love for actress and Emma Stone, satirized social media confessions, and still managed to come off as more than a little spooky. Griffin’s response? Make a video to Justin Bieber that essentially steals what Carrey did and adds… well, actually it doesn’t really add anything than the fact that you can actually tell Griffin is joking, along with a sheen of desperate “LOOK AT ME” on the part of Griffen.

So, Griffin essentially made fun of Carrey’s joke by… retelling Carrey’s joke. Well, I guess she added a Jay Leno level of satire to the affair, which is something, right? I guess? “Lesbian bangs” was kind of funny, I suppose, and Griffin’s unmoving, staring face does have that spooky Jim Carrey quality, but the whole still smacks of a desperate attempt at bandwagon jumping on the part of Griffin.

Jim Carrey Professes His Love For Emma Stone In Funny/ Creepy YouTube Video

So this… this is creepy. According to The AV Club, Jim Carrey (he of the talking butt routine, as well as the “watch me be really serious and dramatic in this movie and please forget that I used to talk out of my butt” routine) has released a video on YouTube wherein he professes his love for young actress Emma Stone, and then proceeds to describe how he would seduce her, were he not pushing 50.

Weird, no? Check it out:

While it seems Carrey is simply kidding (but, as the AV Club points out, it appears to be “like when you’re barking up the tree of a hot female acquaintance that clearly has no interest in you, and you’re like, ‘Ha ha, wouldn’t it be funny if we slept together? That would be hilarious,’” kind of way), it’s still a little, well, odd. Carrey made an explanation via Twitter:

“Yes, my msg to Emma Stone was a comedy routine and the funniest part is that everything i said is tru [sic].”

You know, I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that not every celebrity needs to celebrate the wonder that it social media—I just can’t get his creepy, unblinking stare out of my head (ok, that’s more because of the terrible The Number 23 film, but still).

Box Office Predictions: Lantern To Light Up The Box Office

After last weekend’s solid debut J.J Abrams Super 8 will be competing with blockbuster hopeful The Green lantern, Jim Carrey’s kid comedy Mr.Poppers Penguin.

Hoping to be another in the long list of successful comic adaptation comes.The Green lantern is a known property, add in the youthful appeal of Ryan Reynolds, Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively and The Green Lantern could turn out to be sizable hit. Working against Reynolds & Co are poor reviews, and the fact that The Green lantern is the third comic book film to be released over the past few weeks. However, marketing has been intense, and movie audiences are always looking for some summer time fun with a big action popcorn flick. With that said, look for The Green Lantern to open in the #1 spot.

Looking to for strong second weekend hold comes J.J Abrams Super 8. Super 8 opened solidly last weekend, and has been preforming quite well during the week. The Green Lantern should take away some of it’s gross, but look for Super 8 to land in the # 2 spot this weekend.

Jim Carrey hopes to regain box office glory this weekend as he returns to familiar territory with the kid flick Mr.Poppers Penguins . Once the biggest comedy box office star in the world, Carrey has seen his box office clout drop over the past ten year as movie goers have seem to grown tried of his comedic shtick. Poppers Penguins should give Carrey a slight box office boost as the film bears a slight resemblance to his fan favorites Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, and The Mask. Look for Poppers Penguins to land in the # 3 spot.

Look for Memorial Day holiday favorites The Hangover 2, Kung Fu Panda 2 to duke it out with X-Men First Class for the rest of the top 5 this weekend. X-Men First Class has been preforming decently over the past few weeks and should face some competition from The Green Lantern, to drop # 4 this weekend while Kung Fu Panda 2 should drop #5.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins: Movie Review

For the past few years, every time I’ve gone to see a kids movie in the theater, I always take a moment to feel sorry for the parents in the theater. These days, taking a family of 4 to the theater can cost anywhere between $50 and $75 (Closer to $100, if you’re seeing something in IMAX or 3-D)! But then, to add insult to injury, more often than not they’ve got to sit through dreck like Alvin and the Chipmunks, or Marmaduke. Thankfully, there are a handful of movies out that are not only geared towards the satisfaction of children, but the whole family, and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey is one of them. The Story:

Tom Popper (Jim Carrey) is a real estate developer whose career is more successful than his family life. He is struggling to balance his goals of becoming a partner at his prestigious firm against staying relevant to his young son and preteen daughter. But when his world-explorer, absentee father dies, Popper inherits not one, but six live penguins that he must now care for. Though the birds initially turn his routine and tidy life upside down, they also provide him with a new opportunity to connect with his kids and ex-wife (Gugino). In order to take advantage of this second chance, Popper must keep the penguins in his penthouse apartment, hidden from his nosy neighbor (Krumholtz) and out of the hands of a zoo keeper with ulterior motives (Gregg). As the animals bring his family closer together, Popper is able to become the emotionally available father to his family that he never had himself.

The Good:

Family Comedy vs. Children’s Comedy – It’s a daunting task to write a film that’s able to connect with both children and adults. It certainly doesn’t help that each year Pixar continues to set the bar so high, with the kind of universal storytelling that resonates with literally everyone. Most family movies write off the adults in the audience, and appeal solely to children with base humor and plot lines written in crayon. That said, Mr. Popper’s Penguins does a fine job of riding the line between the two styles. The film is very character driven, and doesn’t rely on the kind of stylized humor that continues to drive, say, the Shrek series into the ground.
Jim Carrey – Carrey’s performance is charming enough to keep adults engaged with his character, and though his trademark cartoonish energy is present, it isn’t a distraction from the story at hand. The humor surrounding the penguins is mostly geared towards children (one of the penguins’ distinguishing characteristics is that he keeps bumping into walls, while another one farts incessantly), however, they’re such naturally amusing creatures that whether or not they’re real or seamlessly animated, one can’t help but enjoy their presence.
Supporting Cast – First of all, there’s Ophelia Lovibond, who plays Popper’s alliterating assistant, Pippi. This girl is absolutely adorable, and her energy and appeal carry every scene she’s in. Here’s hoping this ingenue never longs for work, because I just want to see more of her smiling on screen. But more importantly, Popper’s cast is bolstered with some great and timeless character actors who really understand their function in a film, and play not to their own strengths, but to the story’s. Angela Lansbury, with her matronly voice and manner, is a welcome presence in any family movie, and it’s nice to see her introduced to yet another generation of children. Clark Gregg’s performance is only a teensy bit more overstated than usual, but hey, he’s the bad guy in a kid’s film. It’s still a pleasure to see his polite sincerity in any film. Jeffrey Tambor and David Krumholtz fill in a few scenes. Philip Baker Hall also has a small role as Popper’s boss, and although he is probably the most under-utilized actor in the film, he’s one of those performers whose face you just like look at on camera.

The Bad:

What book? – Based on the beloved 1938 children’s book by Richard and Florence Atwater, Mr. Popper’s Penguins has very little in common with its source material. Now, it’s quite understandable that this story would need to be updated for modern times and audiences, especially since one of the key elements of the book is that many people don’t even know what penguins are. However there’s a simplicity to its antiquated setting that has been a substantial part of its charm for some time now. The plot is different as well, choosing to bring the penguins closer to the family, rather than exposing them to the world. And part of the magic of the book is the fantastic notion of a troupe of traveling performing penguins. But most distinctly, all of the themes have changed as well. Rather than being a story about a man who realizes the dreams he has shelved for the sake of his family, this is a film about a man who puts puts his personal goals aside to be closer to them. It’s not an offensive departure, it’s just that if you’re looking for a nostalgic connection to your third grade summer reading list, this isn’t it.

Overall:

Although Mr. Popper’s Penguins may not provide the emotional catharsis of a Pixar film, its strong cast does a very good job of keeping it an emotionally grounded film, and strengthening its ability to connect with audiences of all ages in broad, and meaningful ways.

Rating: 7/10

Mr. Popper’s Penguins Trailer Comes From Time Warp

Mark Water‘s Mr. Popper’s Penguins trailer sets a tone, and that tone is of a family comedy from the mid 90′s. Even though the film opens on June 17 of this year, you’ve got Jim Carrey acting alongside CGI and real penguins and the trailer ends in a dance number set to Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.” It’s a movie that could have just as comfortably starred Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy back in the day, or even Carrey himself. And yet… here were are. Take a look.

The film also co-stars Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury, but this is a teaser that sells the high concept that Jim Carrey is acting with penguins. The movie is based on a children’s book, and as such they’ve likely just taken the concept and little else to stretch it into feature length.

Though Jim Carrey has done children’s films before (like The Grinch), the “acting against animals” is a long standing and terrible genre of films that has fallen upon most of the great comic actors. Mostly it’s a bad genre because it revolves around mugging and humorous encounters with animal feces. They also usually involves a father or would-be father who learns to be a better one by growing to love and take care of the animal or animals that have been foisted upon him. The genre practically writes itself.

Still, they can make money. And Jim Carrey has not a hit in a while. Perhaps the people who grew up on Ace Ventura will take their kids to this.

The first official photos from Jim Carrey’s upcoming movie Mr. Popper’s Penguins have been released. Back in December we posted some behind the scenes images of the actor and his hobbling co-stars and today we’ve got some HQ photos straight from the studio. They were originally posted over on USA Today, but you can check them out right here…

Damn, those penguins are everywhere! They’ve crept their way into every crevice of this man’s life. It looks like he’s training them for something. Perhaps he’s trying to domesticate them like dogs? We’re not familiar with the children’s book from, which the film is based but we are interested in whatever is going on between him and these birds.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins centers on a high-powered businessman suddenly inherits six penguins. As he gets acquainted with – and increasingly attached to – his winged roommates, Popper’s life quickly unravels: his swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he’s long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail.

Mr. Poppers Penguins is scheduled to hit theaters on August 12, 2011.

Jim Carrey Highest Rated Saturday Night Live Since Betty White

Did you happen to catch “Saturday Night Live” this weekend? NBC aired the first new episode since the holiday break and they brought out the big comedic guns to ring in the new year. Jim Carrey (who was promoting I Love You Phillip Morris) was the host last week, and he breathed some much needed life into the show’s ratings. According to reports, he had the highest rated episode since Betty White hosted last May.

SNL received a 7.8 in the metered-market household Nielsens. White is the only other person who’s delivered a higher rating. Carrey last hosted the show in 1996, which means this has been 15 years in the making. The actor, who’s great at both comedy and drama, was in his element on Saturday delivering the best the show has seen in a while.

It’s no secret that the writing for SNL hasn’t been the greatest recently, so a lot of the laughs the actor got stemmed from his physical comedy. No one can contort or throw themselves around like he can! Besides Carrey’s talent, SNL probably got a much needed boost from its lead-in, the “NFL Wild Card Playoff” game. Did you watch?

Production is well under way for the feature adaptation of the children’s tale Mr. Popper’s Penguins. The film stars Jim Carrey as Popper and a few paparazzi photos have surfaced online that feature the actor on set. He’s dressed to the nines in all black with a touch of white (just like the penguins) and he’s chatting up a few non-human companions. Take a look…

We can’t make out the young boy featured in one of the photos but it looks like Carrey’s sitting on a bench with co-star Ophelia Lovibond. In comparison to the animated version of the character, Carrey looks like a spitting image. The only thing he’s missing is that ridiculous mustache and red ascot.

Mr. Poppers Penguins is scheduled to hit theaters on August 12, 2011.

New NSFW I Love You Phillip Morris Trailer

Doesn’t it feel like we’ve been hearing about I Love You Phillip Morris for years now? The movie has bounced between several distributors but finally landed a solid deal with Liddell Entertainment and Roadside Attractions. The film stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as two men who meet in prison and begin a love affair. A new NSFW trailer has been released for the film and yeah, there’s some stuff in it that young, sensitive eyes shouldn’t see. Take a look…

I Love You Phillip Morris centers on a married con man (Carrey) who’s also a devout Christian and an organ player who happens to be living a double life — he’s gay. Everything’s turned upside down when he lands in jail and falls in love with his cell-mate Phillip Morris, who’s played by McGregor.

The trailer does have some graphic language and one sex scene but despite all that aggression, the relationship between McGregor and Carrey seems genuine and cute. There’s also a scene with Carrey wearing fishnet underwear, which we didn’t even know existed. Thanks Phillip Morris, we learned something new today.

I Love You Phillip Morris hits theaters on December 3rd.

Jim Carrey Joins Mr. Popper’s Penguins and Under Cover

In one day we’ve got two big announcements for Mr. Jim Carrey. The actor has been confirmed to star in the upcoming Mark Waters film Mr. Popper’s Penguins and is in talks to headline the comedy, Under Cover. Neither project has that much in common with the other but they do share a star. Here’s the rundown on both…

According to Deadline, Carrey will star in the lead of 20th Century Fox’s Penguins, which is an adaptation of a popular children’s book. Everyone from Owen Wilson to Jack Black have circled the role but the studio landed on Carrey (and for cheap!).

The film will center on “a high-powered businessman suddenly inherits six penguins. As he gets acquainted with – and increasingly attached to – his winged roommates, Popper’s life quickly unravels: his swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he’s long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail. ” Jared Stern is rewriting the latest version of the script by Sean Anders and John Morris.

According to Pajiba, Carrey is also being courted to star in Under Cover. It’s about “a recently divorced father of two who joins a youthful cover band so he can earn enough money to win his custody battle against his ex-wife.” Summit Entertainment is producing the film, which was written by Amy Talkington. This premise sounds horribly eighties and horribly generic. We’ll take Poppins and his penguins over this any day.
