Most January movies are less exciting than a new episode of Two and a Half Men. It's usually the month reserved for the cream of the crap. But Guillermo Del Toro's Mama, which hits theaters tomorrow, defies the first month movie stereotypes. For one, it doesn't suck. It's a well-crafted horror film, mainly thanks to Jessica Chastain, who is brilliant and unique in everything...
Zero Dark Thirty is finally going to be playing nationwide this weekend, which means audiences can finally decide for themselves if the film is pro or anti-torture. It’s worth checking out as it’s one of the best films of 2012, and we got a chance to talk with stars Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke, director Kathryn Bigelow, and screenwriter Mark...
It's unfortunate that the debate about whether Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is pro or anti-torture came to fore before the film went into wide release, as it may paint the film as something it's not. Regardless if the film is true or "true," the movie is done as a procedural, and though torture is shown, that's not what the film is about. Zero Dark...

The Road director John Hillcoat is tackling the Prohibition era in Lawless. With a cast of breakouts and veterans, it's filled with eye-catching performances. Unfortunately, the film suffers from a few fundamental issues that take it from poignant to mediocre.
Kathryn Bigelow’s follow up to the Academy Award-winning The Hurt Locker got an unexpected boost from real life events last year—Zero Dark Thirty, the story about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, got an ending when the real SEAL Team Six succeeded in their mission to take down the terrorist leader. And thus, Zero Dark Thirty got an ending. And...
After being shipped from New York to Madagascar, and then leaving Madagascar only to end up in Africa, Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) have a new game plan for getting home: Joining the circus. Will it get them back to America? This third entry in the franchise is easily the best...
Though it premiered at the Cannes festival to modestly positive reviews, we're still hungry to see Tom Hillcoat's Lawless - which stars Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce - something fierce. The film doesn't come out theatrically until August, so we'll have to make due with this new clip from Hulu.
Racism is still a hot button issue in America, and though the civil rights movement was a previous generation's struggle, it's hard to address those issues cinematically and still make an entertaining film. 2011's The Help comes at a time when issue pictures are out of fashion, and so it seems slightly fresher than it might have had it come out in any other decade....
In 2010, there was word that Cannes was holding up announcing their slate in hopes that Terrence Malick's Tree of Life would be ready in time. Cannes got Tree of Life- where it recieved some boos and won the Palme D'or - but a year later, as Malick and company were still deep in post-production. Most...
When you have a film with Sam Worthington, Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Ciaran Hinds, Jessica Chastain and Martin Csokas you expect it to hit theaters. When it's directed by Shakespeare in Love's John Madden, and written by Mathew Vaughn and Jane Goldman it seems like something of a powehouse. And yet The Debt has sat around for at least a year. Festival screenings...
After a long, we do mean long wait, the first trailer for Terrence Malick's upcoming feature The Tree of Life has been released. The film from the reclusive director stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain. Not only did Malick helm the feature but he also wrote the screenplay which centers on a man coming to terms with the tumultuous relationship he...
