Kate Beckinsale And Jessica Biel Join ‘Total Recall’ Remake

Well, fans of remakes of really, really odd 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger films, along with fans of really, really pretty people, have something to celebrate this morning–/Film reports that, in addition to Colin Farrell playing hero Douglas Quaid and Bryan Cranston playing the bad guy, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel have both just been announced as recent add-ons to the cast of the Total Recall remake. In addition, Bill Nighy will round out the cast as resistance leader Quatto.

Beckinsale will play the role of Quaid’s life in the “real” world (really, none of this will make sense if you haven’t seen the original), originally portrayed by Sharon Stone, and Jessica Biel will star as the woman Quaid encounters in his “spy life.”

And while that may inspire some confidence in viewers approaching the remake, the fact that it doesn’t take place on Mars (which is sorta kinda a crucial plot point—imagine a 2001: A Space Odyssey that takes place in, say, north Jersey rather than in deep space), and the film is being directed by Underworld director Len “I like to cast my wife in things” Wiseman isn’t exactly bolstering. Seeing as how his directing credits are comprised of the Underworld trilogy, the Hawaii Five-O pilot, and the fourth Die Hard film (aka, Bruce Willis vs. Green Screen and Plausibility), it may be safe to not hold out for the Total Recall being something of a cinematic/ action masterwork.

But hey, it’s a Hollywood remake directed by an inauspicious director, starring beautiful people, and seems to have ditched some of the major plot points that made the original such an odd, original work—and that’s always worked well in the past, right?

Uma Thurman Joins Playing the Field With Gerard Butler

Uma Thurman has joined the cast of the athletic, romantic comedy Playing the Field according to Variety. The film is headlined by Gerard Butler, and will feature the Scottish actor in a love triangle with Thurman and Jessica Biel. Yes, Jessica Biel! This is definitely an interesting trio don’t you think? Find out more about the movie…

Playing the Field centers on a professional soccer player (Butler) who decides to coach his son’s youth team. He uses the job as a way to bond with his son, but he ends up dodging the sexual advances of multiple soccer moms instead. The trade reports that Thurman will play the mother of one of the other children on the team, and Biel will star as Butler’s ex-wife. The film will be directed by Gabrielle Muccino.

We don’t have a problem with Thurman and Butler as potential partners in this movie, but Biel? She plays his ex-wife? We’re assuming that she’s also the mother of his son, so how old is this kid exactly? Did Biel’s character have him fresh out of high school? The age difference between the characters is a bit unnerving.

I love it when an action film comes together! Despite the fact that this movie continually reminded me of Team America, it’s a solid piece of entertainment. With all the explosions, flying tanks, witty lines and references you’re hoping for, it’s pure cheesy fun. Out of all the action movies that we’ve had this summer, this is the first that is pure entertainment from start to finish (don’t shove Iron Man 2 in my face, it’s a different type of film).

The Good:

Sharlto Copley: After District 9 everyone was wondering what Copley would do next and if he could really act. He may have blown us all away with his precious performance, but that was in his native accent and with his long time friend Neill Blomkamp behind the camera. So could he pull off an American (fuck yeah!) action film? The answer: Hell yes! In fact he was show stopper. He made the film fun. He’s just as good in this film as he was in District 9, only this time he’ll have you laughing your ass off. Not only did he tackle the accent like a pro, but he also managed to completely embody the character and transform himself. It’s like he has the magical ability to bring quality to action films!
The Team: Across the board, the boys playing the A-Team seemed to really take over their roles and embody the characters (despite the one mentioned below). They had great chemistry together and really helped enhance one another’s performances.
The Tone: There’s no doubt that there will be moments when the Team America theme jumps into your head with all the over the top America – (fuck yeah!) music. The good news is that Carnahan seemed to have a strong grasp on what he was going for and really stuck with one over the top, ridiculous tone for the entire film. It was able to hold some suspense without ever becoming too serious and always seemed aware of what it was trying to accomplish – entertainment.
The Music: It might not be remembered, but it really helped drive home the tone of the movie and kept it light-hearted and fun in moments that could have become too dark.

The Bad:

Too Much Explaining: I get that the A-Team is all about “when a plan comes together” but I don’t always want to listen to every single plan come together in detail. Although I love listening to Neeson’s voice narrate the film, it was a bit excessive and not always necessary.
Rampage: Let’s be honest, out of all of the characters Mr. T (being alive and all) was the hardest one to watch on screen. No one could really ever recreate Mr. T’s performance and although Rampage may have had the physic, he didn’t quite have the presence needed to embody the character.

Overall:

Leave your brain at home, buy some popcorn and enjoy the ride!

Rating: 8/10

Making the A-Team: Neeson, Carnahan, Cooper, Copley, Biel

Last week, we sat down to a press conference with the director of The A-Team Joe Carnahan along with cast members, Liam Neeson (Hannibal), Bradley Cooper (Face), Sharlto Copley (Murdock) and Jessica Biel (Sosa) to talk about how the plan came together (so cheap – I know). I should mention that Rampage Jackson, the man who plays B.A. Baracus was also in attendance, but he didn’t really say much — in many ways his large sunglasses and physique said all it needed to.

Joe was extremely forthright and one of the first things he said was that the reason he made the movie was for money, the gang talks male bonding and why they all love their character and more below…

Joe, the studio had been working on this for years, but the plan wasn’t coming together until they started talking to you. What, in your mind, did it all come together to say that this movie could work?

Joe Carnahan: I was broke. That was job one. It was one of those situations where I looked at it, I was not the biggest fan of the show as a kid. I think that probably helped because I didn’t have all of these things I thought I had to pay homage to. Brian Bloom and I we sat down to write and for all the 15-years of all the scripts that [the studio] had, we found a central plot device in five-minutes on google. It wasn’t like a tremendous heavy lifting, we literally went on google and found out that Sadam Hussein robed the central bank of Iraq, 24-hours before Shock and Awe, literally had this guy going with a stick-up note and say, ‘I want 600 million in Euros, 400 million in, you know.’ And I thought, and we actually had a copy of the letter. I thought it was a great way to start. If anything that was the moment of inspiration. I went, ‘Okay, we can probably make this work.’

Bradley, this is your first big action. The fact that you saw this as a kid, did that make it easier for you this your first big action picture?

Bradley Cooper: Well there weren’t a plethora of action movies that were coming to me and I fought for this. The reason I wanted to do it was Joe Carnahan and Liam Neeson were attached. I asked for a meeting with you (Joe) and we met and we literally hit it off. We talked for like two and a half hours. It felt like five minutes and you gave me the script. You took me over to Jules (Daly), the producer, then you gave me the script. I texted you the next day and I said “I gotta do the guy” and you were like, “Alright, bro’, let’s do this.” It was a testament to Joe fighting for me to get it because this was before Hangover came out or anything.

Joe Carnahan: I just remember you making a joke saying $262 domestic bro, that’s all I’m saying (laughs).

Bradley Cooper: 274… (laughs).

With films like this it sometimes feels like the cast is straining to have the rapport on the screen. You really had great rapport onscreen. How did you cast? What did you do to get that rapport or did it just happen magically?

Joe Carnahan: For me, I think a lot of what my process is, at least directorially, is what we all did. We had a number of dinners and we watched the fights at Liam’s house and it was all this stuff we did before the cameras rolled and after the cameras rolled. And to me, it’s a pet peeve of mine, I can look at a movie and look at a scene and say immediately, ‘Okay, these people met each other a half hour before call.’ I don’t think you get the best out of people [when that happens]. You need to know someone socially to have an idea of them and this is why you see I have great affection, warmth and love for these guys because they became my friends. I think that if you’re only looking at it in a strict professional sense, then you miss the better part of it, which is at the end of the day it’s wonderful to make a movie but it’s better to make friends, and some of these people will be my friends for the rest of my life – probably not Rampage but we’ll get to that later. (Laughs)

Liam Neeson: We got along with each other and I think obviously there’s a lot of that hoping that it will work when the camera starts rolling and it did. It was just an ease and a generosity between us and something clicked. We all liked each other and liked being with each other and looked forward to going to work every day. It was as simple as that and as complex as that too.

Bradley Cooper: And it made it easy because when the four of us were together we were either doing something where we couldn’t see each other because we were doing action or we were locked in the sardine can of a tank or a helicopter for six hours or 15 hours. We benefited from the fact that we all got along. Everybody is so different, as the characters are, but really the four of us couldn’t be more different and that’s kind of wonderful.

Joe Carnahan: Jessica (Biel), why do you love all of us?

Jessica Biel: Isn’t it obvious? (Laughs) I have to say I had an incredible experience on this movie. Clearly everybody loves each other. It was literally like being around 5 older brothers. I was tortured and loved and cared for and picked on as I should have been. It was a beautiful experience.

Liam, you suddenly have a whole new action career that’s popped up, why did you accept the role?

Liam Neeson: Well I was broke too. (Laughs) I was just very deeply chuffed that I’d be considered for it. I did this film, Taken, that’s given me a whole new lease on life at the age of 58. So it was great to flex those different muscles if you know what I mean. When I met with Joe, I loved him. I thought the script was very, very clever and quite intricate. It was a no brainer for me.

How do you see yourselves similar and different from each of the characters that you play and what quality would you like to take from them?

Bradley Cooper: I loved Face. We created sort of a childlike enjoyment of what he did. He’s the first guy and last guy out and he’d die for his friends in a heartbeat. At my greatest, I’d be one-eight of Face. I really loved him. I loved playing that guy.

Sharlto Copley: The reason I ended up being an actor was that my buddy that put me in District 9 knew that I did different voices and different characters with my staff as a business executive or company owner. So, I was certainly able to draw on a lot of aspects of myself and then the interesting thing about the character which on the one hand is very comedic, it was just interesting to actually see.

What I would take away from it is probably there’s a likeness with which when you view the world through those kind of eyes, nothing is actually as serious as you might think. If you’re gonna go down in a plane or in any type of vehicle, and you know you’re going to die, for example, Murdock would probably die laughing. On the one hand, it’s kind of funny to watch — but if you really think about what that means, it’s kinda cool. I would love to be able to say that if I knew my plane was going down, your choice is die in a state of complete terror or just let go completely and go out laughing — It’s weird. It’s kind of a humbling character to play in a way in that sense.

Liam Neeson: Well these guys know no fear and that’s really interesting. I mean, I’m scared when I wake up in the morning. Every day is a tale but I won’t get into that. It’s interesting the scenes these guys do. It’s like they actually do — they are not scared and that’s an amazing quality I think. I’d love to have that quality in real life.

Jessica Biel: I think I feel similarly to what Bradley was saying about his character. If I could be an eighth of her, that would be amazing. I feel like we share a similar quality with I guess ambition and career, drive. I feel like I’m probably quite ambitious and so is Charisa Sosa. But she also has that quality of not being afraid and of being an adrenaline junkie. I share that a little bit but that no fear, balls to the walls quality that all of these characters share, and the people in real life who do these jobs have those qualities. They’re not very serious people. They’re wildly outrageous and fun and smart and witty. To be like that, I would kill to be like that.

A-Team Clip Filled With Unrealistic Action And We Love It!

Twentieth Century Fox has just released the first clip from their big screen adaptation of The A-Team and it’s ridiculous. We haven’t seen this much over the top action since the original TV show, which means director Joe Carnahan did his job. The clip includes Faceman (Bradley Cooper), B.A. Baracus (Rampage Jackson), and Murdock (Sharlto Copley) trying to survive while being shot at in a tank, that happens to be hovering in mid-air! Check it out…

The A-Team is based on the popular 1980’s TV show that centered on a group of falsely accused military men forced to live underground. The characters are Lt. Templeton ‘Faceman’ Peck, Col. John ‘Hannibal’ Smith, Capt. ‘Howling Mad’ Murdock, and Sgt. Bosco ‘B.A.’ Baracus.

If this scene was from any other movie, we’d throw this clip under the bus because of its sheer outlandishness but it’s The friggin’ A-Team! Not only are the main characters trapped in a tank but they’re trapped in a floating tank that’s sole means of support comes from 3 parachutes. Plus, we’re supposed to believe that Cooper would be able to breathe let alone shout at such a high altitude without losing consciousness?

The A-Team, you gotta love it!

The A-Team New Trailer and Poster

A new theatrical trailer has been released for this summer’s big screen adaptation of The A-Team. The film is based on the cult TV show of the same name and features a cast led by veteran actor, Liam Neeson. The more we see from the film the more I’m convince that it will be awesome, campy fun. Plus there’s explosions galore and isn’t that what The A-Team‘s all about? Check out the latest trailer…

The premise of the film follows the same plot of the series except everything’s been pushed back about 25 years. Three of the four characters in question obviously didn’t serve in Vietnam because with the exception of Neeson, none of them where born back then. This follow up to the first trailer is filled with more random explosions and unfortunately more Jessica Biel. I could definitely do without her in this movie, but it’s not about what I want.

There are a few homages to the original series that are great to see like B.A. Baracus’ knuckle tattoos that say “Pity and Fool” on each hand. The old theme song also appears on more than one occasion at the beginning and the end of the trailer. It’s good to see that they highlight Murdoch’s partial insanity, and Sharlto Copley is pulling off his southern accent a lot better than I thought he would.

Jamie Foxx Writing Laverne And Shirley Movie

Over the past decade so many TV shows have been adapted to the big screen that no property is safe. In this case, “Laverne & Shirley,” the popular Garry Marshall sitcom that starred Cindy Williams and his sister Penny Marshall is the next victim of this creative crime. Oscar winner Jamie Foxx is set to write the screenplay and will bring the duo to the big screen with the help of his Valentine’s Day co-stars Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel.

According to a report from TV Guide, original “Laverne & Shirley” producer Garry Marshall recently confirmed that the screenplay for the film adaptation is being written by Foxx. He also revealed that both he and the actor are working together to give the characters a modern day spin that would be relevant for today’s audiences. He went on to describe Foxx’s vision for the movie and I have to be completely honest, it scares me.

“He’s writing it. It’s a whole different modern day take on how they came up on the streets during difficult times. Laverne would be this very tough girl with a big ‘L’ tattooed on her arm. Jennifer Garner would play Laverne and Jessica Biel would play Shirley.” (Funny… I kinda see it the other way around.)

The idea of Laverne having an ‘L’ tattooed on her arm as opposed to her sweater is too much for my taste. He also mentioned that he was interested in the show’s original stars appearing in the film, but he doesn’t want to reveal who they’ll play just yet. Since the two main characters seem to be set, who’ll play Carmine, or my personal favorites Lenny and Squiggy?! No one can do Lenny like Michael McKean, nobody!

Richard Gere Joined by Jessica Biel in State of the Union?

Richard Gere has a busy weekend ahead of him. The Golden Globe winning actor’s latest film, Brooklyn’s Finest hits theaters today and news of his next project State of the Union is overflowing on the net. It turns out that Jessica Biel may be signing on to be his co-star in the Garry Marshall remake according to Coming Soon.

State of the Union was a 1948 film directed by the legendary Frank Capra, and starred Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. It was a political drama that centered on an estranged married couple who must reunite to aid the husband’s Presidential campaign.

The screenplay has already been adapted by Rod Lurie who previously wrote the political drama The Contender back in 2000 as well as the short-lived TV series, “Commander in Chief.” Lurie is definitely someone who can write for powerful women, but can Jessica Biel handle his dialogue?

Nothing has been confirmed regarding her casting, but Gere is attached to star in the lead previously played by Tracy. Also, Annette Bening has been rumored to star opposite him as his wife. That’s a pairing that makes sense. It’s not clear who Biel would play, but it better not be the Hepburn role because that would be disrespectful to the late actress. Hopefully, this is all theoretical because there’s a big part of me that doesn’t want this film to be remade at all.

Earlier today we brought you the first high resolution photo from Joe Carnahan‘s big screen adaptation of The A-Team, and there’s more where that came from. Several new images have just been released from the film that features Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, Rampage Jackson, and Jessica Biel…

The A-Team is turning out to be pure cinematic fun, with potential to be a huge summer blockbuster. There are too many self-proclaimed ’80’s babies out there to let this movie go unnoticed. The premise of the film follows the same plot of the series except everything’s been pushed back about 25 years. Three of the four characters in question obviously didn’t serve in Vietnam because with the exception of Neeson, none of them where born then.

The only thing that bothers me about these pictures is the lack of Murdoch. Sharlto Copley is nowhere in sight, and everyone knows that Murdoch was one of the best characters. He’s crazy, but not in a murderous way. We can’t get him, yet we get a full body shot of Jessica Biel’s character, who’s a mere love interest of Cooper’s Faceman? How is that right?

The A-Team Behind the Scenes Set Visit

Lately, we’ve been posting various set photos from the big screen adaptation of The A-Team. The film is directed by Joe Carnahan and stars Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Faceman, Rampage Jackson as B.A. Baracus, Sharlto Copley as Murdoch, and Jessica Biel as Amy Allen. Entertainment Tonight recently went to visit the cast on set and showed the actors in costume and got the low down on what the film’s really about.

After seeing this, I have come to the conclusion that I’m not feeling Rampage in the role of B.A. at all. I hope that little clip they showed of him in character was for the gag reel, because that was terrible. Please, don’t let his entire performance consist of him doing his best Mr. T. impression. As for everyone else, they get a pass. I was kind of disappointed that we didn’t get any Hannibal action, but you know Neeson has over a hundred projects filming at the same time so maybe he was off that day.

Jessica Biel Discusses the A-Team

Jessica Biel has been cast as the main female lead in the sausage party that will be Joe Carnahan‘s The A-Team. Her character was originally described as the ex-girlfriend of Faceman (Bradley Cooper), who happens to be an army general hot on the A-Team’s tail. The actress recently sat down with MTV, and spoke a little about her character and the film.

On IMDB, Biel’s character name is listed as Amy Allen, yet in her MTV interview she stated it as Carissa Sosa. I’m hoping there’s an error on her part, or maybe her character is a double agent? Here’s what she had to say about the role.

“She works for the Department of Defense, so she’s sort of after the A-Team throughout the whole movie,” she said. “She had a previous relationship connection with one of the members of the A-Team, but not presently at the moment is their particular love interest.”

We already know it’s Face, stop trying to beat around the bush. When her casting was announced the first thing they said was that she would play his ex. That’s not a big secret, nice try though. They couldn’t let her go without asking her the biggest question of all, will Mr. T. make a cameo in the film? Inquiring minds want to know.

“I don’t know about [possible cameos] actually. Up to my knowledge at this point no,” she said, adding that she’d like to see Mr. T play some kind of role. “That would be great. I can’t imagine that people wouldn’t want to see him. When you think of A-Team you think of Mr. T, so that’d be great. I don’t know about it though.”

With the exception of Hannibal, I think it would be great if all the original actors made an appearance in the movie. It has to be done in a non-corny way, but done none the less.

Last week, we brought you the first cast photo featuring the main actors on the set of Joe Carnahan‘s The A-Team. The only person missing in action was the leading lady of the film, Jessica Biel. We got such an overwhelming response from our readers to the previous photo, I wonder what will be said about this one.

Take a look at Biel on the set of The A-Team…

Biel’s character is the ex-girlfriend of Faceman (Bradley Cooper), who happens to be an army general hot on the A-Team’s tail. I think this role could have gone to any young Hollywood actress, so I’m not blown away by her casting. The wardrobe department must have given her the long coat to make her appear more serious since she’s playing a government official.

The rest of the cast includes Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Rampage Jackson as B.A. Baracus, and Sharlto Copley as Murdoch. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 11, 2010.
