Spy Kids 4 Trailer threatens Fourth Dimension

At the end of the new Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World trailer, it says the film will be in 4-D. What does this mean for audiences? Often considered spacetime by nerds, it can also be odors in the theatrical business. Does that mean we will be able to smell Jessica Alba and Joel McHale‘s cooking, or Jeremy Piven‘s bad guy cologne? Likely it’s just a marketing gimmick, as the film is in 3-D, so perhaps the film will not open a wormhole for every screening. Robert Rodriguez returns for the fourth entry in this decade-old franchise, and now there’s a trailer. Check it out.

In the intervening years, Robert Rodriguez went through a very public separation from his wife, and the film is about kids embracing their step-mom. Interesting. But other than that subtext, this looks to be more of the same sort of heightened kids film anarchy that’s part and parcel with Rodriguez’s children-centric filmmaking. The original kids are now too old to be called kids, so this functions as a sequel and reboot at the same time, as with so many sequels these days.

The franchise has always been successful, but this will probably be the last entry… unless audiences really wanted this. But that’s hard to believe with a franchise that hasn’t had a sequel in eight years. Perhaps this was contractual obligation. The film hits theaters August 19th.

Little Fockers: Movie Review

Jack and Greg go at it again for a third round in the Meet the Parents film series. The first movie debuted 10 years ago and was filled with laughs and quotables like “I have nipples. Greg, can you milk me?” But its follow up Meet the Fockers was disappointing and showed us what happens when you have too much of a good thing, therefore Little Fockers is nothing more than a lesson in cinematic overkill.

The Plot:

Greg and Pam are living a modest life with their twins free and clear from the influence of their insane parents. But when they throw a birthday party for their kids, a pleasant family reunion turns into a horrible free for all. Jack wants Greg to take over as the patriarch of the Byrnes clan, but he suspects that Greg’s having an affair with an attractive drug rep (Jessica Alba). Jack tries to uncover the truth about his extracurricular activities while also keeping his own secret at bay — he had a heart attack.

The Good:

Owen Wilson: It’s a sad day when Owen Wilson steals the spotlight in a movie headlined by Robert De Niro. Little Fockers doesn’t have that many bright spots, but the one pleasantry it has going for it is Wilson’s character Kevin. He’s a pseudo-hippie who happens to be an investment banker. He’s rolling in money, and is still secretly in love with his ex Pamela Byrnes-Focker. The character is a walking contradiction in everything he does and he was the root of any comedy generated in this movie.

The Bad:

The Comedy: Little Fockers is the equivalent to a really bad mid-nineties sitcom. The humor is unoriginal, the jokes are tired, and they don’t know when to let some stuff go. They take one thing (an erectile dysfunction drug) and they beat you over the head with it. It’s not funny the first time and revisiting it over and over isn’t going to change that.
The Story: There are so many elements to this story that you just don’t care about. There are too many moving pieces in the plot that’s already weighed down. Do we really need Harvey Keitel as the lazy contractor? No. Do we need a subplot centering around why Stiller’s daughter isn’t talking to him? No.
The Characters: Just like the story, there are plenty of characters here that you don’t care about or need. Keitel is obviously one, Jessica Alba’s Andi Garcia (that name is supposed to be hilarious), and Laura Dern’s school principal were all one dimensional parodies. They weren’t interesting.

Overall:

Little Fockers isn’t funny. It’s not fun. And most importantly, it didn’t need to be made. This is not how you want to spend your holiday weekend.

Rating: 2/10

Little Fockers opens in theaters nationwide on December 22.

The first photos of Jessica Alba on the set of Robert Rodriguez‘ fourth installment of the Spy Kids series, All the Time in The World have surfaced online. After looking at these photos we’ve noticed that the actress looks vaguely familiar. She’s sporting a tight, black cat-suit that almost looks exactly like the costume Scarlett Johansson wore as Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Coincidence? If that doesn’t shake you, we’ve also found several photos of the original spy kids Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara working with her on set. Get ready, it’s time to feel old. Take a look…

In All the Time in the World, Alba plays a retired spy named Marissa Cortez Wilson, who has been reactivated. She’s the mother of a baby and two preteen step-children who get pulled into a web of intrigue when she’s called for duty. The former “spy kids” Vega and Sabara are no longer children and don’t fit the bill but they do return as Carmen and Juni Cortez. We’re assuming their related to Marissa.

In the above photos it looks like Alba’s about to go fight Whip Lash in Iron Man 2. We can’t get over the similarities between the outfits. Besides that glaring issue, it’s hard to believe how much Vega and Sabara have grown! It truly is the end of an era.

Jessica Alba Wasn’t Naked in Machete, It Was Special Effects

Jessica Alba is known for her beauty and amping up her sexuality. Despite the photo spreads she’s done in the past and the barely there wardrobe she’s worn in films, the actress has never done nudity. She’s always spoken out against it and has said multiple times that she has no interest in putting her naked flesh on screen.

This seemed like a contradiction when Alba appeared in the Robert Rodriquez flick Machete where she was shown in a shower scene with nothing but her arm covering her assets. So what happened to her famous no-nudity clause? It turns out she never shot that scene in the buff, and the computers did it for her.

According to the Daily Mail, Alba originally shot the Machete shower scene in her underwear then the digital effects team removed them in post production. Now photos have surfaced online that show the real scene from the film compared to the one altered by CGI. Take a look…

What do you think? We haven’t heard Alba vocally express any anger regarding Rodriguez’s decision to remove her clothing so she must not be that upset about it. Maybe she’s uncomfortable with the actual act of being naked on camera but not the “illusion.”

Also, Alba has been cast as the lead in Rodriguez’s Spy Kids 4, so she obviously doesn’t have a problem working with him again. This whole thing is just weird. The shower scene in the movie is literally 5 seconds long and pointless. The fact that they put all that extra work in for an insignificant scene is kind of worrisome. Are we that hung up on T&A in movies? That time and energy could have gone into something else. There was more than enough nakedness to go around. Is it cheaper to digitally alter nudity than it is to hire a body double? What was their logic?

Hooking Up With Danny Trejo: Starring The Girls of Machete

Over the years Danny Trejo has made a living being the scariest, meanest, most badass ‘that guy’ in Hollywood. Need a psychotic Mexican to scare the shit out of a kid? Call Trejo. Need a stand-in to remind everyone not to ever, ever fuck with a guy who rocks a horseshoe mustache (while wearing leather) unless he taps your foot underneath the stall first? Dan’s your man.

Over time, we’ve gone from being vaguely weirded out by Trejo to wanting to model expensive glassware after his asymmetrical face. He’s not just a success story. He’s the success story. I move that we just skip the pretense and admit our man-crush and speculate over what woman from his new movie Machete deserves to be his arm candy. Contestants will be judged on personality, compatibility, and their kill factor. Why kill factor? If you’re around Danny Trejo, somebody always dies, that’s why.

Jessica Alba as Sartana

Compatibility: Trejo is a Robert Rodriguez stalwart, and Alba has been in more Rodriguez films (2) than any other contestant, and she has an uncanny knack for being half-naked in them. Point.
Personality: As a muse, she elicits a ‘damsel in distress’ trigger that’s both hypnotizing and galvanizing. Hypnotizing because you would have sex with her. Galvanizing because you would have sex with her. Point.
Kill Factor: Never underestimate the damsel in distress trigger – it makes guys lose their shit and forget the sixth commandment, the one about not murdering for the sake of a hot girl. Wherever she goes, she’s on the verge of turning any establishment into the lost footage of Road House, except with chainsaws and machetes instead of mullets and faux-kung fu. Point.

Lindsay Lohan as April

Compatibility: Very strong. In her first collaboration with Trejo, Lohan portrays a nun who likes to play with guns. Coincidence? No, because not unlike Lohan, Trejo comes from a conspicuous past in which something like that isn’t ironic in the least. However, Danny Trejo only needed one go around to flush the junkie-demons in his head. No Points.
Personality: To a more straight and narrow man, a nun with a gun would seem like a fundamental contradiction, but in Trejo’s world, cleaning up your act probably means joining the covenant and spreading the righteous hand of God with boobs and firearms. Point.
Kill Factor: Just look at that poster and try to convince yourself that that wouldn’t be how you would want to go – capped by a hot nun. That’s seduction, betrayal, and cold blooded of the fiercest order – a veritable honey trap for any dude that thinks with his cock. So…all of us. Point.

Michelle Rodriguez as Luz

Compatibility: Rodriguez is the closest female version of Trejo in Machete. Their date would start out like Indiana Jones meeting Marion in some faraway Tibetan bar in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but instead of apologies and pleasantries, this would only escalate with cerveza and severed heads until either one of them was dead. That or they’d drunkenly conceive a love child who would one day become the Federale messiah. 1/2 Point.
Personality: If the the old adage that opposites attract is remotely true, they’re both screwed. The scenarios wherein one of them doesn’t end up dead are few and far between. No Points.
Kill Factor: Judging by her past, Rodriguez knows how to recklessly handle heavy machinery and put lives at stake. Point.

Electra & Elise Avellan as Nurse Mona & Nurse Lisa

Compatibility: Twins. Sisters. Hot sisters. Nothing wrong with wanting to spread the love. This has all the makings of one of those Animal Planet specials, with the tagline being ‘watch and observe as Danny Trejo demonstrates his right to exercise polygamy with two girls who are just barely old enough to be a socially acceptable fantasy’. Point.
Personality: Who cares? Twins. 2 Points.
Kill Factor: Double the pleasure, double the fun, double the bodies. Killing isn’t so different from any other trade in that, scientifically, two heads are better than one, and four boobs better than two. 4 Points.

Mayra Leal as Chica

Compatibility: If the schlock-tastic trailer of Leal secreting a cell phone into her husband-hole is to be believed (and for the sake of holy shit!, we do believe it), Leal may be the only one of this bunch who might be able to dominate Danny Trejo in the bedroom, instead of vice-versa. No Points.
Personality: Not much is known about Leal, aside from her circus-bred snatch. X-factors usually don’t do well in these contests. Instead of growing a personality, they spent their youth learning how to do strange and terrible things with their vaginas. No Points.
Kill Factor: If she can incapacitate Danny Trejo while having a vibrating, beeping phone…holy shit. Point.

Rose McGowan as Cherry Darling

Compatibility: If you’re going to be around Danny Trejo, you have to know how to survive hairy situations, of which McGowan has only a so-so record (Scream = dead, Planet Terror = alive), so we’re not sure how she’d make out if Trejo gets a business call in between wine & dessert and has to intercept a hijacked Boeing 707 and eliminate every Lebanese terrorist on board before Chuck Norris does, and makes a movie about it called Delta Force. 1/2 Point.
Personality: McGowan is partially known in some circles as a grown-up version of one of the Mean Girls, and if Danny Trejo’s mustache is any indication, it’s that he has zero tolerance for catty B.S. Plus she hooked up with Robert Rodriguez, so, you know, awkward. No Points.
Kill Factor: If there’s anything nearly as impressive as Leal’s spacious vagina, it’s McGowan defying the laws of pretty much everything and mowing down soldiers with a gun for a leg. Point.

The Winner:

Tallying the scores, it’s the Allevan sisters, with an impressive seven boobs – I mean points – who take the cake!

Machete: Movie Review

Machete is an old school, grind house action flick with guns, knives, and a strong political undertone. The last description doesn’t really fit but that didn’t stop Robert Rodriguez from using this trailer turned film to vocalize his disdain for U.S. immigration policies. The filmmaker has a huge bone to pick but instead of addressing Congress, he’s taking his argument to the theater!

The Plot:

Machete follows an ex-federale who is betrayed by his superiors in his native Mexico. After years on the run, he ends up in Texas taking odd jobs to make ends meet. After taking down a tough street fighter he’s commissioned to assassinate a controversial politician who’s trying to crack down on illegal immigration. From that point on he finds himself embroiled in an “us vs them battle” between the Latin natives who are part of an underground community called “The Network” and a group of extremists who work for border patrol.

The Good:

The Characters: Every person in this film is an exaggeration of someone who really exists. The characters are all based on stereotypes. There’s the overzealous southern politician, the Mexican drug lord, the hard pressed cop, and of course the vigilante hero, whose blades are faster than bullets. That’s obviously the exaggerated part.
The Action: Gun play? Check! Explosions? Check! Knife fights? Hell yes! Machete has a lot of obscene and almost obnoxious action sequences that are filled with gore. There’s a reason the protagonist’s weapon of choice is a giant blade. He’s not trying to just get the job done. He’s trying to make a point.
The Story: Like I said earlier, the plot heavily leans on the current state of immigration in the U.S., specifically the cities near the Mexican border. This is an underdog story, not just for Machete but for his people. At times the political tone does get a bit heavy handed but it’s an entertaining way to shed light on the topic.

The Bad:

Jessica Alba: Why was she cast as the female lead? Her acting is unbelievable — literally she was UNBELIEVABLE. You don’t buy her as a immigration officer who’s torn between her allegiance to the law and to her people. Her performance didn’t feel genuine. Michelle Rodriguez (one of the highlights of the film) could have done a lot better with the role than Alba.
Steven Seagal: So this is why Seagal wasn’t in The Expendables? He plays a Mexican drug lord who’s also Machete’s arch enemy. Seagal is a shadow of his former self. His squinted gaze, bloated figure, and obvious hair piece was nothing more than a distraction when he appeared on screen. This is not the same guy from Hard to Kill. It just can’t be!
The Length: This movie was entirely too long. It was overextended by one too many villains. There’s always a guy, behind a guy, behind another guy, and then you get the real guy who’s pulling the strings. It takes forever for them to get to that point and when they do, we’re exhausted.

Overall:

If you liked Grindhouse, you’ll love Machete. It’s got sex, drugs, action, and low riders as far as the eye can see. If that’s your thing, this will be the perfect flick for you to spend your money on this Labor Day weekend.

Rating: 7.5/10

Jessica Alba Will Headline Spy Kids 4

Robert Rodriguez must have made a serious impression on Jessica Alba when they worked on Machete. According to THR, she’s the latest actor to sign on for Rodriguez’s upcoming sequel Spy Kids 4. You didn’t know that series was still going strong did you? This is the newest entry in the highly successful family series that the director created back in 2001. Here’s what Alba will bring to the party…

The trade reports that Alba will play “a retired spy who has been reactivated. She’s also the mother of a baby and two preteen stepchildren.” This fourth installment will be more of a reboot instead of a sequel to the other films. The former “spy kids” Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara are no longer kids and don’t fit the bill. Vega’s almost 23 and is engaged to be married (if that doesn’t make you feel old we don’t know what will).

The new film will center solely on Alba’s character and her step-children who will be named as the new juvenile spies. Even though they’ll no longer be the stars of the series, Vega, Sabara, and Antonio Banderas are expected to return in supporting roles.

Other roles seeking to be filled include Alba’s husband, a slightly nerdy investigative reporter, and the villain, known as the Time Keeper, whose goal it is to stop time.

Spy Kids 4 will also be in 3D.

Little Fockers Trailer – Same Jokes, Different Title

Meet the Parents was a hilarious movie that put a fresh twist on the “awkward in-law” scenario that most of us will face at some point in our lives. It’s sequel Meet the Fockers took that concept and beat it to death and the third film, Little Fockers just makes us ask why? Why make the movie? Why continue on this downward spiral that does nothing but take us to bad places? Get ready for some old, tired, and reused jokes that include erectile dysfunction and precocious children. How many times are we going to have to sit through the whole, “I’m watching you” shtick? I love Robert De Niro but please stop making him say that. It’s slowly bordering on “You talking to me?” status. This film takes everything we hated about Meet the Fockers and makes it worse by adding children and Harvey Keitel. What is this a Mean Streets reunion?

The first two films were directed by Jay Roach, but Little Fockers is helmed by Paul Weitz. It’s set for a December 22nd release, which puts it up against Gulliver’s Travels and December 17th’s Tron Legacy. I wonder who’s going to win that box office battle (shifty eyes).

The Killer Inside Me: Movie Review

The latest movie from prolific but patchy Michael Winterbottom, The Killer Inside Me, is faithfully adapted from a novel by black-hearted pulp writer Jim Thompson. It features a stand-out performance by Casey Affleck as the cold-blooded psycho of the title, but with walk-outs and angry reactions at Sundance earlier this year (listen to them here), it is already the subject of some controversy for the vicious beatings meted out to its two female stars, most notably the extended pummelling of Jessica Alba’s sweet and pretty phisog.

The Plot:

Casey Affleck plays Lou Ford, deputy sheriff in a small Texas town, who may appear to be a “boy scout with a badge” but is in reality a cold-blooded psychopath. His affair with sado-masochistic prostitute Joyce Lakeland (Alba) reawakens his murderous impulses and as he kills to revenge the cover-up of his brother’s murder by the local big-wig (Beatty), and kills again to cover his own tracks, the local union boss (Koteas) gets antsy and the DA (Baker) gets suspicious.

The Good:

Casey Affleck. He’s given a great deal more to imply than actually work with, and carries the film solidly. He perfectly captures the unknowable tone of the character with a combination of apparent good-nature, fine southern manners, and sudden cruelty to the eyes and mouth, a magnetic, unpredictable presence.
Film style. This being Winterbottom, everything rattles along very comfortably, even if the jazzy opening credits are almost the best thing about the film; there’s a dismal reliance on TV-style close-ups and considerably too many montages of Affleck and Alba cavorting in golden sunlight, plus the irony of the wallpapered hillbilly bebop on the soundtrack gets old pretty quickly, and the rest of the score consists of tired, recycled string effects (low, ominous; high, anxious).

The Bad:

Deliberate lack of psychology. This was not Thompson’s strong point, but Winterbottom pares it down even further than in the book, operating under the maxim that sometimes people do things “just because”. Despite the apparent self-reflection of the title and the first-person narration, Ford ponders not at all on his penchant for killing, and notwithstanding his fondness for violent sex, it is never clear whether he is simply capable of killing dispassionately, or whether he harbours a deep-seated urge. Hereditary explanation is mostly expunged, and the details of his revenge motive remain abstract. Alba’s character is even sketchier, conveniently fond of being knocked around, switching easily from having her buttocks beaten blue to melting in Ford’s arms. That Alba is a poor actress even in her most straightforward scenes is no help.
The beatings. The outrage is basically justified. Ford’s male victims get a much quicker and easier time of it. His trickiest crime, hanging a boy in his jail cell, takes place entirely off screen, and we see nothing of the effect of his pummeling a blackmailing drunk. By contrast, Alba’s face is gloatingly shown in various stages on the way to becoming a bloody pulp, and the camera remains uncomfortably on Hudson’s grotesquely twitching body (her best bit of acting, with her dress over her face). Even if both women take it without a hint of resistance, these are still valid moments; but in the context, such a lack of equal opportunities viciousness on the part of the film-makers has the stench of misogyny, be it conscious or not.

Overall:

It’s perfectly watchable, the Alba beating aside, thanks to the slick style and Affleck’s magnetic performance, but was never going to satisfactory. The attempt to avoid psychologising in a first-person-driven film about a serial killer seems bold and admirable, but is ultimately foolhardy. Affleck makes him intriguing, but cannot rescue Ford from borderline two-dimensionality (and how come he has a beautifully furnished library in which he listens to Strauss and practices calculus?) The film is a portrait without insight, a slick entertainment no better than its over-rated source, and more dangerously than on the page, disturbingly more interested in the acts of violence themselves than in their causes and implications.

Rating: 5/10

The Killer Inside Me is released in New York on June 18 and simultaneously in Los Angeles and VOD on June 25.

New The Killer Inside Me Trailer and Poster

The creepiness that is Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me has been released. The film that turned this year’s Sundance Film Festival on its ear (listen to the outrage) is going after general audiences so get ready. The film stars Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, and Jessica Alba as a trio involved in sex, murder, and more murder.

The Killer Inside Me is based on the 1952 Jim Thompson novel of the same name and remains brutally faithful to the material. The story follows a small town sheriff who goes from protector of the innocent to a deranged killer in the blink of an eye. A couple of weeks ago a teaser trailer appeared online that kept the violence to a minimum but this theatrical version gives you a slight peek at how far the film really goes.

Even though he plays a complete and deranged psycho in this movie, Casey Affleck does look intriguing. He’s got that same cold demeanor that Anthony Hopkins had in Silence of the Lambs. Those blank eyes and that slimy delivery is what makes his presence seem even more terrifying than his actions.

The Killer Inside Me is scheduled to hit theaters on June 18, 2010.

Out of all the films to get trashed at this year’s Sundance Film Festival The Killer Inside Me took the cake. The audience’s reaction to it was less than stellar (listen to the outrage) and at one point a woman had to be physically removed from the theater because she was shouting her disdain at the top of her lungs.

No matter how you feel about the film it’s coming out this summer and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. If you don’t want to see it, don’t watch it but if you do here’s the trailer…

Robert Rodriguez is a marketing genius! In honor of Cinco de Mayo, the director decided to release an “illegal” teaser for his upcoming film Machete. The folks over at AICN got first dibs on the new trailer that features a special introduction by its star Danny Trejo. The actor will be joined by a supporting cast that includes Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey just to name a few.

Besides Trejo, Marin is another actor who consistently appears in Rodriguez’s films and to see him as a gun toting priest is classic. Also, is it just us or does De Niro look like he’s showing some range in his role as the Senator? It’s been such a long time since we’ve seen him step outside the box and he looks damn good here.

There are so many things to like about this trailer but our favorite is the small credit given to Don Johnson. It says “Introducing” in front of his name as if he hasn’t been in the film industry for 40 years already. The irony!
