This week you can expect a pleasant surprise when you stumble across Roger Michell’s latest film, Morning Glory. While maneuvering your way through alien invasion flicks and movies about runaway freight trains, Morning Glory is a hilarious alternative with great performances and a sharp screenplay.

The Plot:

Becky (McAdams) is a workaholic whose dream is to executive produce a national morning show — specifically NBC’s “The Today Show.” A monkey wrench is thrown into her plans when she’s fired from her current job and forced to move in with her mother until she can get back on her feet. Luckily for her, a position opens up at the lowest rated morning show in the country called “Daybreak.” Despite her lack of experience, and the lack of respect she receives from the cast and crew, Becky makes it her business to make the show a success.

She finds a loophole in the contract of a legendary news anchor named Mike Pomeroy (Ford) that forces him to join “Daybreak” as a co-anchor. Her drive to push the sensational envelope and his style of no nonsense journalism make the two an unlikely pair. In other words, inappropriate jokes and hijinks ensue!

The Good:

The Humor: This film is legitimately funny. The banter between all of the characters is snarky but still fresh and clever. For the first time, in a long time you’ll feel like you’re watching a genuine workplace comedy. Morning Glory has “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” written all over it with the only difference being words like “shit” and “pap smear” being said on camera.
The Set Design: The set up for “Daybreak” is supposed to mimic that of “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America” and it’s obvious. There’s a hardcore, low key newsroom, and a bright, over the top stage that features the on air talent. It’s a carbon copy.
Rachel McAdams: A lot of people consider The Notebook to be Rachel McAdams’ breakout movie, but she had to share the spotlight with two other guys there. In Morning Glory she does her fair share of sparring with Ford but the heart and soul of the film is Becky. She’s smart, quirky, relatable, and most importantly likable enough for audiences to enjoy the performance. McAdams does an amazing job.
The Tone: Judging from the trailer, Morning Glory looks somewhat goofy, but the movie does have its tender moments. It knows when to make you laugh and when to make you cry. There’s a time and a place for everything and Morning Glory is aware of that.

The Bad:

More Jeff Goldblum Please: I love dramatic Jeff Goldblum, and sci-fi action Jeff Goldblum, but comedic Jeff Goldblum has to be the best out of the bunch and he was nowhere to be seen in this movie. He dropped a couple of quips here and there but he was mostly the straight man against McAdam’s character.

Overall:

Morning Glory is a really entertaining, refreshing, and funny workplace comedy that features A-list talent bringing their A-game. This is definitely worth your hard earned money this weekend.

Rating: 9/10

The Switch: Movie Review

This weekend the semen comedy of the year, The Switch starring the easy-going Jennifer Aniston and “baby-faced-man-boy” Jason Bateman hits theaters. It’s a bit of the twist on the usual love story it’s ultimately, just another funny enough, easy to watch, rom-com. Luckily it does have a few qualities that will make your time in the theater worthwhile (provided you have popcorn and preferably a drink or five beforehand).

The Plot:

An unmarried 40-year-old woman turns to a turkey baster in order to become pregnant. Seven years later, she reunites with her best friend, who has been living with a secret: he replaced her preferred sperm sample with his own.

The Good:

Dialogue in the Opening: A lot rom-coms take a while to get going, but the dialogue in the opening few scenes to this film is Mamet-esq. It’s fast paced, doesn’t bother to explain itself and pushes us right into the film. Sadly it doesn’t stay that way throughout, but it definitely has some good moments.
Jason Bateman and Mini-Bateman: It’s a sweet, humorous relationship. It’s got some heart and the two play off one another quite well. Bateman plays his usual character with a few extra details thrown in. He’s great (as always) with dry humor and his child counterpart seems to be as well.
Jeff Goldblum: He appears to be mocking the film from within and yet for some reason it worked. His lines were one dimensional but he was at least entertaining and made certain dull lines more interesting.

The Bad:

Predictable: Though they add in the whole “semen” twist this is definitely a pretty standard rom-com, it follows the “sure-hit” structure to a T. It has enough jokes to that make you chuckle and enough heart to make you kind of care — but there is nothing original here.
No Connection: Though they gave Bateman’s character a lot of layers and he was a solid character, there is no explanation as to why they’re together and there’s never any real chemistry between them. I guess this film is a lesson on settling?
Convenient Ending: The whole movie seems to wrap itself up in a short montage, and there’s no third act. The big second act “reveal” happens and then with one short conversation everything is settled. If it’s something that easy to solve than it’s not really a problem and then why should we care?
Lack of Change: The movie takes place over 7 years and despite a few grey streaks in Bateman’s hair (which appear to come and go) and some extensions on Aniston, they look exactly they same. Would have been nice to see a little more change over such a long period of time.

Overall:

If you’re looking for something light and fluffy this is definitely it despite Bateman’s hard edge. Overall it’s just fine, better than expected, but it is what it is.

Rating: 5.5/10

Jeff Goldblum Quits Law and Order: Criminal Intent

Veteran actor Jeff Goldblum is done with the USA series, “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” After a two season run as lead detective he’s out according to a report from Variety. What’s the reason behind his decision? Common sense! While NBC’s picked up “Special Victims Unit” and the freshman series “Law & Order: Los Angeles,” USA’s twiddling their thumbs with “Criminal Intent,” therefore Goldblum is a goner!

Before you get angry about his decision to leave the show, his contract is up with Wolf Films and he has the option to exit. Who can really blame him? The show hasn’t even been renewed yet. Also, if “Criminal Intent” does return they’ll more than likely have a short final season (8 episodes) that will feature the return of original cast members like Vincent D’Onofrio. Where would that leave Goldblum, besides in the corner somewhere looking out of place?

There’s also uncertainty surrounding Saffron Burrows who played Goldblum’s partner on the show. After both D’Onofrio and “Law & Order” Legend Chris Noth jumped ship the focus of the series shifted to the two new characters. USA needs to return to a formula that works. If D’Onofrio wants to come back, bring him back, get the old team together and produce a decent season. Is that too hard?

Morning Glory Trailer With Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a big screen workplace comedy that actually made us laugh and director Roger Mitchell‘s new film, Morning Glory might put an end to that drought. Not only does it look funny but it has an amazing cast including Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, Rachel McAdams, Patrick Wilson, and the awesome Ty Burrell from ABC’s “Modern Family.” What more could you ask for? Check out the trailer…

The premise for Morning Glory centers on a young TV producer who works for a morning news show that happens to be tanking in the ratings. In a last ditch effort to revitalize the program she hires a veteran news anchor (Ford) to join the show but he butts heads with the current female host and former beauty queen played by Keaton. He doesn’t want to cover gossip or fashion or any of the frilly topics that the show has to offer. It’s old school meets new school and the laughs ensue.

The film actually looks funny and its great to see Ford in a comedy that has a decent story. He’s always hilarious in interviews so we know he has a personality and the timing to pull off this material. The rest of the cast is just icing on the cake. Rachel McAdams can do no wrong.

Morning Glory will hit theaters on November 12, 2010.

Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman’s The Switch Trailer

The first trailer has been released for Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman’s latest film entitled The Switch. The movie was originally called The Baster but the name was changed for reasons we’ll explain below. The project appears to be another wonky, romantic comedy that the actress can add to her growing resume. See for yourself…

The story for the film centers on two best friends (Aniston, Bateman) who become parents of a child in a very unconventional way. Aniston’s character plans on using a sperm donor played by Patrick Wilson, to impregnate her via artificial insemination. Bateman on the other hand is madly in love with her and wonders why she didn’t ask him to do the honors. During one drunken night he accidentally switches Wilson’s sperm for his own and seven years later wonders if he’s really the father of his best friends son.

The cast for The Switch also includes Jeff Goldblum and Juliette Lewis, and it pains me to say that this film looks mildly funny. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it when I heard about the concept but Bateman makes everything better for me. He knows how to walk the line of comedy and sincerity, and am I the only one who finds it hilarious that Goldblum is in his 50′s but playing a “wingman” type of character?

With the sad news of Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson‘s deaths, the Internets started a series of death pranks with Rick Astley, Natalie Portman and of course Jeff Goldblum. Well, Goldblum decided to clear up the rumors by reporting his own own death on The Colber Report. He says it best when he says “I will be missed.”

Jeff Goldblum is not dead.

Rumors hit the ‘net Thursday afternoon that New Zealand Police were reporting that actor Jeff Goldblum had fallen to his death on the set of a new movie. Thankfully, the report turned out to be an Internet hoax.

Police National Head Quarters in New Zealand told 3 News they knew nothing about the claims and have not had any reports of such an incident in Northland. They say similar rumors were circulating six to eight weeks ago and believe it’s false information.

The New Zealand Film Commission also told 3 News that they are unaware of Jeff Goldblum currently filming anything in the country. He’s not.

On a day when both Farrah Fawcett died and Michael Jackson died , one might say it was the perfect opportunity for a scam artist to re-hash an old hoax about an actor falling to their death. It’s been reported that every few years a rumor gets started on the Internet about a celebrity dying in New Zealand. First it was Tom Hanks in 2006, then Tom Cruise in 2008.

There were also reports yesterday on the web of Harrison Ford’s death; but like with Goldblum, the stories were automatically generated with a fake scenario via a prank website. Users simply plug in any name – which in this case were Goldblum and Ford.

Since yesterday’s rumor spread through the ‘net like wildfire, Goldblum’s publicist has been busy denying all the death rumors. It’s why their paid the big bucks.

“Reports that Jeff Goldblum has passed away are completely untrue,” said the actor’s publicist in a statement Thursday night. “He is fine and in Los Angeles.”

But once the rumor hit the web, it was all hands on deck to report yet another tragedy in the world of entertainment. Thankfully, the Goldblum rumor was quickly called out as a hoax.

Apparently there’s some spoof site that allows you to generate a story about anyone’s death. As @copyblogger writes:

‘Don’t be suckered people… Jeff Goldblum is not dead. The site is an autogenerated spoof that’s been around for years.’

Even actor Kevin Spacey had to jump on his Twitter account to dispel the bad rumor.

Jeff Goldblum is alive and well. I just spoke to his manager. Stop these stupid rumors.

Goldblum, a tall and quirky actor, is known for films like The Fly, Jurassic Park, The Tall Guy and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He is currently starring in the TV series Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum Join Morning Glory Cast

Not long ago we reported that Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams would be teaming up with Director Roger Michel, Producer J.J. Abrams, The Devil Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna, in an upcoming film about feuding news anchors titled Morning Glory. It has just been announced that Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum will be joining the amazing cast.

The film is about an aspiring news producer (McAdams) who tries to save a failing morning show by getting control of its feuding anchors (Ford and Keaton). Goldblum will portray McAdams’ boss.

I can see why Keaton, is joining the film, she’s a sucker for a good dramedy, Goldblum will show up randomly here and there in a variety of films, McAdams is one of the new hot things, but what is Harrison Ford doing in this? It’s rare that you can get Ford to show up as a newscaster in a film. I thought he only showed up for $20 million action paydays? He’s either got something to prove or this is a realy good script.

Hell, last time McKenna was able to pull in Meryl Streep, so I guess it’s no surprise. It does seem like an odd mixture of actors though. I wonder how they will work together.

The film is scheduled to begin next month in New York. I can’t wait to see the first pictures!

Patrick Wilson and Jeff Goldblum Join The Baster

The Jennifer Aniston comedy The Baster just got a whole lot better thanks to the addition of two new cast members. I was already on board when I learned that Aniston would star opposite the hilarious Jason Bateman. That guys been doing comedy since he was a kid, so what’s not to love? According to Variety, Watchmen alum Patrick Wilson and “Mr. Welcome to Jurassic Park” Jeff Goldblum have also signed on for roles in the film.

The plot to The Baster surrounds two friends Kassie (Aniston) and Wally (Bateman). Kassie wants to have a child, but prefers to use a sperm donor rather than conceive the old fashioned way. Patrick Wilson will play the “genetically superior” donor that Kassie initially selects, while Jeff Goldblum will star as Wally’s boss. The monkey wrench gets thrown into this scenario when Wally switches out Wilson’s sperm with his own, therefore impregnating his best friend with his child without her knowing!

I’m happy see Goldblum taking a stab at comedy again. His humor’s a bit dry but still funny in my opinion. Is it wrong that in my mind he will always be Dr. Malcolm from Jurassic Park? As for Patrick Wilson, I can see why he was cast in this role. But Wilson is more than what meets the eye. This guy has an extensive theater background and has given some strong performances in previous work. With that being said, I am interested to see him star in a “ha ha” comedy. Whatever you do don’t judge his acting on what you saw in Watchmen. He’s so much better than that.
