This week Paramount acquired the rights to turn the famous Montreal-based circus Cirque du Soleil into a 3D movie… and thankfully, James Cameron, who is a master of the technology, has come aboard as producer. Also in the news this week is Kevin Smith: the indie director will be heading back to the big screen forone night, just to answer our questions. The Iron Lady also returned to theaters today for a normal run, and we’ve got news on the critically acclaimed picture. Catch up below.

The Iron Lady On Moviefone: The Iron Lady played at a theater one week so that its star, Meryl Streep, could qualify for the Oscars. Today the bio-pic based on the life of former U.K. Prime minister Margaret Thatcher returns to the big screen for a regular run. Moviefone has a great exclusive interview with the star as well as other news on the film. Head over to www.moviefone.com to find out more. Also, Politico has also posted some neat campaign photos of Meryl Street as the Prime Minister. Check them out below.

Kevin Smith Heads Back To The Movie Screen: Kevin Smith is heading back to the big screen, this time to answer our questions. The independent director will be hosting a one night event on Thursday, February 2 at the Scotiabank Theater in Toronto, Ontario. The event will be broadcasted Live and will feature “Jay and Silent Bob Get Old.” This is a great opportunity to ask the questions you want to ask or join in on Smith’s jokes. For more information go to www.FanthomEvents.com.

Cirque du Soleil Coming To Theaters In 3D: This year you’ll get to experience Cirque du Soleil in 3D. Paramount has acquired the rights to the Montreal-based circus.

Avatar is the most successful (unadjusted) film to ever play in American theaters, but though James Cameron has been talking sequels, it’s hard to weigh the film’s cultural weight. Perhaps the blue paint has kept it from being a hot-button Halloween costume (that and the nudity), but it’s two years later, and it’s unknown when it will it be sequelized, and there doesn’t seem to be much passion in the air for the film. Perhaps Disneyworld will stoke those fires, as they’ve announced they will start construction on Avatar-themed areas in 2013.

Avatar was once the “what the heck is this? Blue Cats?” film, and Cameron’s worrisome follow up to his mammoth hit Titanic (thought untoppable). Six months after release it had made $750 Million in America, and over two billion internationally. But though the film advanced motion capture and 3-D technology, it’s simplistic story hasn’t generated the hard core “I wish I was Jake Skully or Neteri” passions that once kept Star Wars so hot.

But perhaps comparing the film to Star Wars at this late juncture is moot. With theatrical windows shorter than ever, Avatar managed to be a picture that had to be seen on the big screen, and a month after release it was the sort of film that the zeitgeist required anyone who liked films in any sort of meaningful way to hit theaters to check out. Cultural resonance in the age of niche cultures is that much harder to measure. Disneyworld believes that it’s worth doing things Avatar-themed five years after release, so either the sequels will be coming in conjunction with the theme areas, or Avatar is just one of those films.

Would you go to Disneyworld to visit Pandora?

Last week we reported that Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, which opens with scenes from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, was pulled prematurely from Japanese theaters by Warner Bros. due to earthquake and subsequent tsunami which recently struck the country. Hereafter is not alone—Variety now reports that the Japanese release date for the James Cameron-produced thriller Sanctum has been indefinitely pushed back, as the film features “scenes of a cyclone hitting a South Pacific island and water rushing through a cave.”

The film’s distributers feel that it’s all just a bit too intense for the beleaguered country at this time. Indeed, many others are following suit:

“Other pics with content deemed unsuitable for Japanese audiences have also had their release dates scratched, including Sony’s “World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles,” which was to open April 1, and the nuclear arms race docu “Countdown to Zero,” set to bow on April 16.”

The devastation is also wreaking havoc on films that have yet to even be filmed, as several Japanese films are suffering production delays due to the disarray and damage left in the wake of the natural disasters and subsequent nuclear reactor issues.

How the earthquake and tsunami will affect the Japanese film industry in the long-term, however, remains to be seen.

How do you feel about films being pulled from theater’s due to their potentially upsetting content in the wake of the Japanese earthquake?

The heavily marketed “James Cameron Production” Sanctum, directed by the clearly inexperienced Alister Grierson swamps theaters this Friday. It’s safe to assume that most people would interpret Cameron’s E.P. credit as a ringing endorsement of quality cinema. I, however, know it to be Universal’s deceptive maneuver to bait fools to the box office.

Check out the review below…

The Players:

Director: Alister Grierson

Writers: John Garvin and Andrew Wight

Producer: Andrew Wight

EP’s: JAMES CAMERON!, Ben Browning, Michael Maher

Cast: Rhys Wakefield, Alice Parkinson, Dan Wyllie, Ioan Gruffudd

The Plot:

Sanctum follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition to the largest and least accessible cave system on the planet. The game plan is to retrace a previously explored route to reach a “base camp” that will allow the group to conduct research. Once deep inside the cave system, shit hits the fan! Time to fight raging water, deadly terrain, and one of the diver’s inexperienced girlfriends (that they pragmatically brought with them).

The God:

Visuals: The picture is fantastically photographed. Aesthetically, every frame captures the vastness of this underwater setting and the 3D only amplifies the scenic depth.

Adventure: These moments were few and far between, but the audience was afforded a little underwater excitement that kept you on the edge of your seat.

The Bad:

Script: This 3D crazed group of filmmakers spent a little too much time on technology and not enough on content. The writing is abominable – laugh out loud abominable. From the poorly structured story to the less than developed characters, Sanctum’s script seemed like a lousy first draft.

Performances: Can’t a “James Cameron Production” afford to hire some decent actors? There isn’t a single cast member that’s remotely recognizable, which could be refreshing for a super commercial picture – but none of them could deliver. If you’re going to hire shitty actors, at least hire some of the famous ones!

Grierson: This is Mr. Grierson’s SECOND feature film, and it’s painfully apparent. He didn’t quite commit to any specific tone or style of story-telling here.

Overall:

Sanctum‘s Australian director Alister Grierson’s has one source of audience bait: James Cameron‘s name in enormous, bold font in the center of his billboards. The multi-Oscar winning director/writer/producer acts as an EP on this shipwreck of a film (pun INTENDED) about stranded (!!!) scuba divers. Sanctum is a not a Cameron film, it’s very much a project that he sat back on and lent his name to, but what kind of fool forgoes an opportunity to speak with James Cameron?

We were fortunate enough to sit down with the filmmaker to discuss his film. Check out the interview below…

You’ve clearly taken particular interest in water related adventure films, shipwrecks specifically. There’s talk that you’ve considered making a documentary on the subject…

James Cameron: We love shipwrecks. There are plenty of good ones still out there! The Ed Fitz is one I’ve wanted to explore because we have the technology and robotics to go inside and map the material and so on, but we’ve already done that with Titanic. It’d be great to go look for the Indianapolis, the other midway wrecks. The thing fore me is I’ve kind of had an epiphany over the last year, that I could do that kind of exploring which is really archeology slash history for the rest of my life, and have great fun doing it. But the aftermath of Avatar was that there was this really tremendous feet back from the environmental community.

I had an opportunity to help them put a spot light on issues that weren’t getting enough media attention. There’s a mission in this, I need to focus on that and quit exploring shipwrecks, quite frankly. I also feel like as a civilization we’re heading towards a cliff with issues of energy and climate change – these are thing that have concerned me for most of my adult life. I want do docs, if I’m going to put that time and energy in a doc, it should be on those subjects. It should do some tangible good in areas that I’m deeply concerned about – so shipwrecks are gonna wait.

Like the majority of your films, Sanctum features a story of survival…

James Cameron: Yeah, we wanted to do a survival story. We were researching the psychology of survival before we crafted the story. It was based on something that happened to Andrew, but we jumped off from that to tell a fictional story. Its based in true events, both the things that happened to Andrew and incidents that happened on other cave diving exhibitions. Everything you see happened to somebody somewhere. In crafting the story we studied to psychology of survival. We wanted to get into that thing that happens inside people where they have to adjust to a situation that appears completely hopeless. Some people can make that adjustment, some can’t. Some people become more heroic then they could’ve imagined, other people who you think of as leaders can become quite cowardly. I think the appeal for audiences in general is to test themselves against the circumstances of the film. What would I do? I can barely breath watching this let a lone do it?

George’s moment of decompression sickness is one of the most gripping scenes in the picture, can you elaborate on what exactly DCS entails?

James Cameron: You got a bottle of coke, you pop the lid. Bubbles form, why? Because the cap was keeping the pressure on the gas that was in solution. When you scuba dive, you’re breathing gas under pressure, it goes into your blood. In solution, no problem, it’ll come back out slowly if you surface slowly. If you come up too fast it’s like popping that lid – bubbles form in your blood stream, lights out. So, that’s what DCS is. It manifests itself in extreme pain - all the things you saw George going through. It happened because they surfaced too fast. Every diver would know and think the movie is wasting too much time explaining it – but its very hard to bring an audience up to speed with that.

I think it’s safe to argue that you’re a bonafide diver/underwater explorer. Any crazy discoveries over the years?

James Cameron: Absolutely. Almost anytime you dive you see something you haven’t seen before. Doesn’t mean science hasn’t seen it before, but the diver probably hasn’t seen it. If you’re observant there will always be some damn thing you haven’t seen before, some critter. When you dive in the deep ocean like we did on some of our exhibitions, you might see things that nobody has ever seen before – and we did! We imaged some creatures that when we came back and showed it to the marine biologists, they said “We don’t know what that is, sure wish you woulda caught it” it was 7 ft in diameter! How we gonna catch it?

The movie was almost entirely critter-free, any particular reason?

James Cameron: There aren’t many caves. We didn’t focus on that because we didn’t want it to be about that, about animals. We didn’t want people thinking we were leaning towards a monster story. We stayed away from the super natural other than a couple of shots of the Shaman to give it a little bit of an aura. But we weren’t saying there were demons or monsters in the cave. We wanted to make sure people understood this was a human story, a human drama of people trying to survive in a hopeless situation.

The entertainment industry on the whole will argue that you’ve revolutionized 3D film. What’s your honing process like along the lines of cameras?

James Cameron: Every time my cameras go out on a movie – in this case one of my own films, or others like Tron – every time they go out we learn something new. And we take what we know and put it into the next generation of camera. So we’re constantly improving, it’s like building a race car, racing it and running back to the shop and working with it some more, tinkering with it to improve it. We get a lot of feedback from filmmakers and directors of photography. The cameras are smaller, lighter, smarter, doing more of the work for the crew. What I wanna see is everybody able to use them. It’ll lift the entire market, I don’t want to just be associated with a few good 3D movies and have audiences say the other ones are crap. Everyone is gonna do their 3D slightly differently, the same way people deal with color differently. You have to think of 3D like color or sound, a part of the creative palette that we paint with. Not this whole new thing that redefines the medium. That’s why people get stuck.

With a majority of the country’s eyes glued to the big screen for Sunday’s Super Bowl, look for this weekend’s box office to be ruled by low-grade teen horror fare with Gossip Girl Alum Leighton Meester‘s The Roommate, Oscar Nominees such as The King’s Speech, action flick holdovers The Mechanic/The Green Hornet and James Cameron’s Sanctum.

And Now For Our Predictions…..

#1 The Roommate

The movie going public has shown that they are willing to pay top dollar for low-grade horror/thriller/teen fare in the winter months with the likes of The Haunting in Connecticut to The Last House On The Left all opening to solid numbers. Throw in a C-level TV star in Gossip Girl Leighton Meester, tabloid favorite Minka Kelly( Derek Jeter’s Girlfriend), and The Roommate will open at the #1 spot.

Our Prediction:$12-13M Opening weekend

#2 Sanctum

The King Of The World Mr.James Cameron returns to theaters abet as a producer on the thriller Sanctum. While the film boast no stars whatsoever, Cameron’s name alone added with the higher 3D ticket prices should help land Sanctum at the #2 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $10-11M Opening.weekend.

#3 No Strings Attached

With a solid opening weekend, and better than average second weekend hold, No Strings Attached has become the go to romantic comedy date movie. The Super Bowl should steal away some moving going couples, but look for the Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman film to hold steady at #3.

Our Prediction: $9M Weekend Box Office

#4 The King’s Speech

In just a matter of weeks the The King’s Speech has gone from Oscar hopeful to Oscar front runner and a likely $100m grossing film. Add in last weekend’s surge in box office receipts , strong week-week declines, and The King’s Speech should land at the # 4 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $8M Weekend Box Office.

#5 The Rite

Anthony Hopkins scored a number one opening last weekend with The Rite, however horrid reviews, likely poor word of mouth, and the super bowl will knock The Rite all the way down to the number #5 spot this weekend.

And Now For The Rest Of The Top Ten.

#6 The Mechanic

Our Prediction: $6.5-7M Weekend Box Office

#7 True Grit

Our Prediction: $6M Weekend Box Office

#8 The Green Hornet

Our Prediction: $5.5-6M Weekend Box Office.

#9 The Black Swan

Our Prediction: $4.5M Weekend Box Office.

#10 The Fighter

Our Prediction $3.5M Weekend Box Office

Are you anxiously awaiting news about the next installments in James Cameron’s Avatar trilogy? Well, you’re in luck because the Oscar winning director recently opened about about his plans for the projects. It’s no secret that the movies will take a lot of time and effort to complete, therefore Cameron plans on shooting them not back to back — but simultaneously.

According to Cameron:

“I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan.”

He went on to say that we can expect to see plenty of familiar faces in the sequel. “Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form.” That sounds great to us, but the real question is who will survive to Avatar 3? Dun! Dun! Dun! As you might suspect, he wouldn’t release that info.

Being that the first Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time, the next two have a good chance of becoming huge successes. Therefore, the director and the studio will put some of their future grosses to good use.

“One thing’s for sure: some percentage of the presumably-massive Avatar sequel gross will go to charity. Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world. I didn’t want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place.”

We knew Cameron would find a way to support the environment. You have to give him props for practicing what he preaches.

Earlier this week, James Cameron appeared at a special 3D event promoting his latest film Sanctum. He serves as producer along with Andrew Wight, while Alister Grierson takes on directing duties. The movie is based on actual events and takes viewers into a world of cave diving and illustrates its many dangers. All three men were in attendance at Universal City Walk, where they spoke about the use of 3D in this smaller film in comparison to Cameron’s epic Avatar. Surprisingly, they all felt that Sanctum does a much better job of submerging an audience in the 3D world.

Check out some video of Cameron at the event as he explains his reasoning below…

Overall, he’s saying that the experience of watching the 3D in Sanctum will be a lot more visible because it’s not done on such a huge scale and there’s not as much CGI. He said it best himself, “The difference between experiencing Sanctum in 2D and 3D is actually much greater because the 3D will constantly be informing you, in the experience of watching the movie, with the sense of claustrophobia. 3D works best in small spaces. ” Intimacy is the key here.

Sanctum is scheduled to hit theaters on February 4. If you haven’t already seen it, check out the trailer.

What do you think of Cameron’s take on Sanctum vs Avatar’s 3D? Does he have a point?

This week the Governator became no more. Actor turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger has come to the end of his term as Governor of California. Now that he’ll have more time on his hands a lot of people are wondering whether or not he’ll return to Hollywood. Earlier today, frequent Schwarzenegger collaborator James Cameron spoke at a special preview event for the upcoming 3D adventure film Sanctum, where he was asked if he’d be open to working on a new movie with the recently unemployed star.

Here’s what Cameron had to say about the idea of a future collaboration between the two:

Possibly. It’s probably more likely that we might work together on something non-film. Because we’re both really passionate advocates and activists for the environment and climate change, renewable energy, and so on. The strides that he made while in office he sees not only as part of his legacy but the foundation for some of the things he wants to do beyond that.

The idea of making a movie together is always a fun concept. I’m tied up for the next five years and Arnold tends to be rather impatient when he sets his sights on goals. So I don’t know how well that’s going to work out because I’ve signed on for two more Avatar films, which is a big chunk.

We’re surprised that he only said five years including Avatar 2 and 3, didn’t it take almost three or four to shoot the first one? As for Schwarzenegger, he’s been out of the game for a long time and it’s uncertain if his audience is still out there. Everyone can’t pull a Sylvester Stallone and stay relevant by revamping eighties antics for today’s movie goers. Is there room for both of them?

Do you want to see Cameron and Schwarzenegger back in the big screen again?

James Cameron says that if films can be made in 3D it should be made that way, not remade in post-production! Recently (being the 3D expert that he is or at least the man who has made the most money from the technology – $2.77 billion to be exact) Cameron has taken a stand against studios that are converting their films from 2D to 3D in post-production and is using Harry Potter and even Clash of the Titans, his own stars films as his examples. His argument is that the conversion should only be used for old films that didn’t have the technology in the first place, not new films deciding after the fact.

He stated at the iBlu-Con event in Beverly Hills:

“My personal philosophy is that post conversion should be used for one thing and one thing only – which is to take library titles that are favorites that are proven, and convert them into 3D – whether it’s Jaws or ET or Indiana Jones, Close Encounters… or Titanic. A scene from Avatar Avatar overtook Cameron’s own Titanic to become the highest-grossing film ever… Unless you have a time machine to go back and shoot it in 3D, you have no other choice. The best alternative is if you want to release a movie in 3D – make it in 3D.”

The Avatar director said it had been a “mistake” for Harry Potter Deathly Hallows: Part 1 to swap to 3D in post and he even went at far as to predict that the practice of adding 3D to movies in post-production would end with the widespread take-up of 3D…

“I maintain you can’t do a good conversion of a two-hour movie with high quality in a few weeks like they tried to do with Clash of the Titans... I don’t mean to throw that movie under the bus because my buddy Sam [Worthington, star of Avatar] is in it, but I think everybody realized that this was a point at which people had gone too far.”

Cameron predicted that the days of 3D conversion in movies were numbered mainly because of the ways that people misuse the technology. If it’s not done right it’s a poor representation of what 3D can do to a film and will ultimately take away from the possible joy and excitement for the audience…

“The thing that’s going to be the coffin nail for conversion is when the broadcasters start broadcasting thousands, if not tens of thousands of hours a year in 3D.

He then brought up Harry Potter as an example…

“My personal philosophy is that post conversion should be used for one thing and one thing only.” Cameron added: “You see another stumble with the most recent Harry Potter movie from the same studio making the same mistake – except really getting spanked for it now because they didn’t get the film done… They announced it in 3D – threw a bunch of money trying to convert it to 3D in post-production and it simply didn’t work. They just didn’t get it done.”

Though he wrapped it up with a good point, pretty soon those pesky glasses will be gone anyway…

“Once we get to auto-stereoscopic, that’s watching 3-D without glasses, it is going to be the way we watch all of our media. That’s probably eight to 10 years away.

My only argument is that the original films don’t need to be remade into 3D! Jaws, E.T. and the rest are more than quality films in 2D and don’t need the pseudo-upgrade! Maybe they didn’t have the technology but it’s the quality of the story and the characters that have kept the film around! Restore it if you need, help out the color a bit, but do we really even need 3D for post-production?

What do you think about Cameron’s 3D argument? Do you agree with Cameron?

James Cameron’s obsession with water continues with his latest feature entitled, Sanctum. The director executive produced the film that takes us cave and sea diving, with no intention of bringing us back to the surface. Yes, it’s one of those movies and the new trailer is not for the claustrophobic. And if you have a fear of large bodies of water and drowning, you might want to take a deep breath before watching. Take a look…

Official Synopsis:

The 3-D action-thriller Sanctum, from executive producer James Cameron, follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition to the largest, most beautiful and least accessible cave system on Earth. When a tropical storm forces them deep into the caverns, they must fight raging water, deadly terrain and creeping panic as they search for an unknown escape route to the sea. Master diver Frank McGuire (Richard Roxburgh) has explored the South Pacific’s Esa-ala Caves for months. But when his exit is cut off in a flash flood, Frank’s team–including 17-year-old son Josh (Rhys Wakefield) and financier Carl Hurley (Ioan Gruffudd)–are forced to radically alter plans. With dwindling supplies, the crew must navigate an underwater labyrinth to make it out. Soon, they are confronted with the unavoidable question: Can they survive, or will they be trapped forever?

Whenever someone says, “What’s the worse that can happen?” We almost want something bad to happen to them. You shouldn’t speak that kind of arrogance into existence. The combination of the caves, the water, and the elements would be enough for anyone to stay on their toes. And the fact that it’s based on a true story makes it even more scary.

Sanctum opens in theaters on February 4, 2011.

The Avatar sequel talk will never die down, so for those of you who have been patiently waiting on some concrete info we’ve got it! According to Variety, director James Cameron plans on delving into the world of Pandora for a second and third time. He along with 20th Century Fox have plans to release two more sequels and we’ve got the release dates to prove it!

The trade reports that Fox is eying a release date for Avatar 2 in December of 2014 and Avatar 3 for December 2015. We don’t even want to imagine the amount of prep work that will have to go into this production with the release dates so close together. Cameron will begin working on the scripts for the film early next year. He wants to start production in late 2011 but he’s not sure if he wants to shoot back to back or wait until he completes the scripts.

“In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of ‘Avatar’s’ visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world,” Cameron said. “I’m looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild.”

Once again, Cameron will produce the film with Jon Landau and Lightstorm Productions.

At the moment, Avatar is the highest grossing worldwide film and the top-selling blu-ray disc of all time!

Do you think Cameron should shoot the films back to back? Can you wait another 3 years until you get more Avatar?
