‘The Avengers’ Full Trailer Has Been Released

Well, it’s finally here—the trailer for the Marvel Films juggernaut in which they mash together the Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America films into a gargantuan, two-hour plus sandwich of explosions, Robert Downey Jr. quips, unconvincing Hulk CGI, and Scarlett Johansson doing things in tights: The Avengers. Toss in some Nine Inch Nails music, the bad guy with the slick mullet from Thor, and some Sam Jackson action in which Sam Jackson acts all Sam Jackson with that Sam Jackson style (did I mention Sam Jackson is in this? Sam Jackson is in this), and you’ve got just about every single Marvel movie trailer you’ve ever seen, all rolled into one convenient mush for you to slurp up.

So, what do you think? The film is directed by Joss Whedon, the man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Serenity, so there’s a sliver of hope that this won’t simply be a directed-by-committee film which is essentially a checklist of studio-mandated moments that just barely hang together and exist solely to generate ad revenue via action figures, video games, fast food tie-ins, and overseas markets. Oh, who am I kidding—there’s loud rock music, Scarlett Johansson is kicking things, and stuff goes boom real loud. I’ll see you there on opening day.

First Look At ‘The Avengers’ Leaks, And It’s Horrible

Well, after months of breathless rumors and conjecture about the film, the first bit of Avengers artwork was released today. The film, set for release on May 4, 2012 and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, features a supergroup of superheroes saving the earth and learning to work together despite their differences and blah blah blah. What’s more amazing is the horribly cheesy leaked poster, which looks like something you’d find painted on the side of a van in circa 1983 east L.A.

According to Coming Soon, “a promo poster for Marvel’s The Avengers was spotted at the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas and photographed by ESQ.” And guess what? It looks awful; that said, it’s better and more entertaining than Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Elektra, and Wolverine combined, so it’s not totally without merit, despite the fact that it resembles the front cover of a bargain bin coloring book. But hey, it’s got lightening and a cool hammer and Scarlett Johansson in tights, so I guess that’s kind of cool, too.

Iron Man 3 Gets Writer And it’s Not Shane Black

In 1987 Shane Black wrote Lethal Weapon and became the big go-to screenwriter for blockbusters. By 2005, Shane Black wrote and directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and had been gone so long from the mainstream that he became an underdog and borderline indie filmmaker. When he was hired to direct Iron Man 3, there was an assumption he would also be writing the screenplay, but currently that role has gone to Drew Pearce, according to Deadline Hollywood. Though Black’s direction in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was assured, he’s still not seen as a great filmmaker first, and many assumed he was hired more for his writing abilities – he even said he’d be writing it. What does this mean?

Likely what it means is that Black – while having a good working relationship with star Robert Downey Jr. – needs someone who knows Iron Man canon and someone who can help tailor the film to the Marvel universe. Pearce is best known for his work on an unmade script for the comic property Runaways, which may yet go forward and last had Peter Sollett attached. Since he’s worked with Marvel, he knows their working process and this is their franchise – they want to make sure the film fits into that world first and foremost.

Also noted is that Black will be “closely involved.” How closely (that is to ask: enough to get co-writing credit) is unknown, but Black is a writer with a distinctive voice, so it shouldn’t be hard to tell. This news is one of those things that can make fans nervous, but isn’t necessarily a bad thing as long as Shane Black is still locked in for his deal.

Shane Black Confirms He’ll Also Write Iron Man 3

In February it was announced that Shane Black would pick up where Jon Favreau left off in Marvel’s live action Iron Man franchise. Black knows a thing or two about the action genre, and he’s worked with Robert Downey Jr. in the past, so there was little to no concern regarding his ability to fit in with the established crew. Although he’s talented, Black’s area of expertise isn’t directing, it’s writing, therefore we were shocked when he wasn’t also confirmed to pen Iron Man 3′s screenplay. But don’t worry, according to AICN, he’ll tackle the camera and the page!

Black recently appeared at the Omaha Film Festival, where he spoke openly for the first time about Iron Man 3 and his new gig. He told the audience that he would be writing the film’s screenplay and both him and Downey are scheduled to meet later this week to discuss the story. Apparently, the actor will have input into where the superhero will go this time around. We’re not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing, but it seemed to have worked for Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk (but look where he is now?).

Black said, “Iron Man 3 will not be another ‘two men in iron suits fighting each other’ film. Instead, it will be more like a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villains.”

When you think Tom Clancy, you think of a world driven by politics and greed. What better way to introduce that than with The Mandarin? He’s always been Iron Man’s arch-nemesis and it makes no sense for them to consistently ignore him in this series. Sure, they’ll have to make a few changes to tone him down, but it could work!

Shane Black Will Direct Iron Man 3

A week ago we heard that screenwriter-turned-director Shane Black was a candidate to replace Jon Favreau as the director of Iron Man 3. Now according to Deadline, Black has been offered the job and he’s currently in negotiations to direct the third film in the Marvel franchise.

This will mark a reunion between Black and star Robert Downey Jr. who previously worked together on the film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Also, during the eighties and nineties, Black was one of the most coveted action screenwriters around. He penned the script for the first Lethal Weapon movie.

It’s not clear if Black will also pen the script for Iron Man 3. The screenplay deal hasn’t been finalized. We’re also not sure what storyline they’re interested in tackling for what should be the hero’s final battle.

Even though it’s going to be weird watching Iron Man 3 without Favreau’s name attached, Black’s not a bad choice. He already has a relationship with Downey and he knows his stuff when it comes to the action genre. We approve of his hiring.

Iron Man 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on May 3, 2013.

Are you still in denial over Jon Favreau not directing Iron Man 3? If so, you should really let it go because Paramount and Marvel are moving ahead with their decision to find another helmer for the sequel. According to THR, the studio is courting Shane Black to not only direct but write the screenplay for the film. How do you feel about that?

The trade reports that Black has met with the execs over at Marvel and given them his take on what the third Iron Man film should look like. At the moment, he’s just being considered for the job but if he’s hired he’ll both write and direct the film. The studio is keeping the story for Iron Man 3 under wraps, so we’re not sure what to expect in terms of the villain this time around.

If the addition of Black to the production sounds weird it shouldn’t. He previously worked with star Robert Downey Jr. on the film Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. The duo already have a great working relationship. Also, during the eighties and nineties, Black was one of the most coveted action screenwriters around. He penned the script for the first Lethal Weapon movie.

Iron Man 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on May 3, 2013.

Jon Favreau Discusses Leaving Marvel’s Iron Man 3

Tuesday afternoon comic fans everywhere were hit with a serious blow. Jon Favreau announced that he won’t return to direct Iron Man 3, but will take on The Magic Kingdom for Disney instead. This came as a shock because he’s been behind the Iron Man machine from the very beginning and for the for him to leave this late in the game for another project just seems weird. Over at the Hero Complex, they got the opportunity to speak to Favreau about the logic behind his decision…

“Marvel and I both came of age together. The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in…. Iron Man has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the Iron Man films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.”

That doesn’t really tell us why he left. It’s just a generic, “thanks for your time” type of response. Over at ComicBookMovie, they reported that Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. butt heads over the film because the actor was unhappy with the turn out of Iron Man 2. A top secret industry source stated,

“I think Robert Downey, Jr. blamed Jon Favreau. That’s why Downey dropped out of Cowboys and Aliens, because he didn’t want to work with Jon Favreau again. Also, by the way, it’s why Jon Favreau dropped out of The Avengers. I thought the odds of him directing Iron Man 3 were slim, and that proved right.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, Iron Man 2 was nothing more than a huge trailer for The Avengers. Even though we don’t know what really went on behind closed doors, one thing’s for sure, Favreau’s out and Iron Man 3 is still scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2012. Will you be there?

Update: Jon Favreau Won’t Direct Iron Man 3!

Update: Favreau just confirmed his departure via his Twitter account. He wrote, “It’s true, I’m directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I’ve had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best.”

The world must be coming to an end because according to a report from Vulture Jon Favreau will not return to direct Iron Man 3. This can’t be a good sign. Favreau has championed the project for years and saw it through to the end, but the site claims that he handed in his resignation as director of the sequel this morning.

No official reason has been given as to why Favreau opted out of the film but sources say that he was frustrated with Marvel’s “urge to stuff more of their in-house heroes into the next film in the wake of The Avengers.” On the flip side, some industry insiders claim that Favreau’s budget was getting too big for the studio’s taste and that’s why they ended up butting heads. Vulture says that Marvel “quietly began the process of finding a director to replace Favreau last night.”

All reasons being thrown out regarding his departure are speculative. Nothing official has been said but we expect an official press statement to be released at some point to let us know what’s going on.

Both Iron Mans made a ridiculous amount of money for Paramount, so it would be shocking if they had an issue with Favreau’s budget. They’re almost guaranteed to make their money back on the sequel. The idea of Favreau being turned off by the studio’s decision to over stuff Iron Man 3 makes more sense. Let’s be honest, Iron Man 2 was nothing more than a big trailer for The Avengers. It was a means to an end.

Iron Man 3 Release Date Announced, Disney Will Distribute

Marvel has been under the Disney umbrella for a while now, but most of its properties are still licensed out to other studios such as X-Men, Spider-Man, and Ghost Rider to name a few. Today, the House of Mouse sent out a press release announcing their plan to distribute two of Marvel’s most popular titles, Iron Man 3 and the highly anticipated The Avengers.

Disney will pay Paramount a pretty penny to get their hands on the Iron Man and Avengers rights to the tune of $115 million. Here are some of the specifics from the press announcement:

In completing this agreement, Disney will now assume worldwide marketing and distribution of ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Iron Man 3′ and leverage these two highly-anticipated films across the multiple global platforms of The Walt Disney Company,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “We appreciate the tremendous momentum that Paramount established with these iconic Marvel characters and look forward to propelling the brand even further in the coming years.”

“Five years ago, when Paramount and Marvel made our initial deal, both our businesses were in very different places,” said Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO of Paramount Pictures. “We are grateful for the partnership we have had with the terrific Marvel team over these years and proud of the work we have done together. Today, this new agreement is the right deal for Paramount, for Marvel and for Disney. We look forward to working together on ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America,’ and we wish Disney and Marvel the utmost success, in what we know will be a very productive and wide-ranging partnership.”

Paramount will still distribute Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger as planned on May 6, 2011 and July 22, 2011, while The Avengers will be released via Disney on May 4, 2012 and Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013.

For those of you worried about how Disney’s input will affect the outcome of the films, relax. With Disney’s backing, the filmmakers will have an even larger amount of money to work with to produce each movie. Bigger budgets don’t necessarily mean better films but it does help with special effects and action sequences, which projects in the comic genre thrive on.

Watch: Real Iron Man Suit In Action!

As kids, we all had fantasies of finding the right technology or chemical formula that would give us the same strength and power of our favorite comic book heroes. What if I told you it was out there? The folks over at Raytheon have made that dream come true for those who are fans of Marvel’s Iron Man. The hero is known for his tough body armor which multiplies his strength and allows him to take on high levels on impact. Co-star Clark Gregg recently visited the company to see what all the fuss is about and we’ve got the video below…

The suit is being called the XOS 2. It can give a soldier the strength of multiple men, it’s laced with high-pressure hydraulics, and built from a combination of structures, sensors and actuators. The video advertises it as a device used for heavy lifting of cargo and supplies, but no one wants to really use it for that do they?

The only down side to this is its design. It’s nowhere near as sleek as the Marvel Iron Man suit and there are no openings for plasma charged beams. We don’t think they would give that type of power to people moving boxes.

New DVD Releases: Iron Man 2, Get Him to the Greek, Scrubs

It’s summer in September this week as some of the bigger summer movies are making their home theater debut with the release of Get Him to the Greek and Iron Man 2. You can also enjoy a couple of smaller art house films and everybody’s favorite cuddly documentary when you pick up the DVD of Babies.

There’s also a smattering of TV on DVD (not the small screen onslaught we’ve experience the last few weeks) and one of the worst DVDs we’ve ever seen (wait until you see the title).

Feature Films

Iron Man 2

Here’s the problem with Iron Man 2: it was a sequel. And not a sequel in the sense of being the second film in a series. Not a sequel in the sense that it has a “2″ at the end of its title. A sequel in the sense of its exemplifying everything that we’ve come to hate about sequels.

Look at the roster: Not one, but two villains this time (bigger, not better). Not 1-and-a-half- but three good guys this time (quantity not quality). That alone makes this movie busier and less interesting.

Then there’s what we see on screen, namely what we see more of: action. The first film spun the interesting tale of Tony Stark grappling with expectation and his genius when he developed his suit. The second movie is essentially just a whole lot of pyro as we move from action set piece to another.

And this is a major downgrade from the first. What’s worse, is that it downgrades in the same way all other sequels do. We get the same complaints about this sequel that we do all other second chapters.

And it’s insane. It’s insane to think that Hollywood can’t learn from their mistakes. That the bad sequel formula we’ve all studied endlessly has never been heeded. That we keep seeing the same problems again and again in sequels to our favorite films.

Why does this keep happening? The answer to all your questions is money. These sequels make a tremendous amount of money, so people must really dig them, right? Wrong. The money a sequel makes is a far great indicator of how much people liked the original and that’s way they shell out to see the lesser movies – not because they psychically think something they haven’t seen is good.

Not to say Iron Man 2 isn’t good – it’s just a sequel.

And you might dig it – which means you should buy Iron Man 2 on DVD.

Get Him to the Greek

Did you ever think you’d say this after you left a movie: “I wish there would’ve been more P. Diddy!”

Well, that’s exactly what we said here. I call it a “Tom Arnold Moment” – relating to that comic’s scene-stealing work in “True Lies”.

Remember that? Remember when you saw previews for a big budget Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie directed by James Cameron and couldn’t believe you were looking at Tom Arnold in the trailer? “What is he doing in that movie!”

Then you actually see the flick and realize he’s not only good in the film – but he’s essential to its becoming such a classic.

Don’t get me wrong, Greek is certainly no classic, but P. Diddy pulls every bit the same misdirection trick that Arnold did in that action film.

TV On DVD

“Scrubs”: Complete Series

“Scrubs” is one of the more polarizing series in recent television history. That is, there are those who swear by it – think it’s one of the smartest and funniest sitcoms of all times. Then there are people like me. Those who find it entirely unwatchable, an unfunny and overwrought excuse for quirkiness that falls flat.

It’s not hard to see why this show is so divisive when it’s comedy is just so blunt. A show that relies heavily on gags with absolutely no subtlety with cutaways and non-sequitors as the norm.

This is exactly the type of structure that endears itself to many while others find it obnoxious. But don’t take my word for it – vote in the poll below and see how the stats bear out that exact love it/hate it appeal of this ex-series.

Deleted Iron Man 2 Scene: Alternate Opening

Don’t you hate it when trailers advertise footage that is nowhere in the actual film? It happens a lot, and last summer’s Iron Man 2 was no exception. Apparently, there was some footage taken from an alternate opening of the movie used in the trailer that never saw the light of day — until now. The scene has appeared online and features what would have been a hilarious re-introduction to Tony Stark and Pepper Potts had they gone with it. Check it out…

This scene is funny, there’s no doubt about that but we’re not sure if it would have been the right way to open the film. Seeing the Paramount logo followed by Stark’s face in a toilet isn’t the epic intro a superhero should have. They made the right decision.

This scene will more than likely show up on the DVD in the extra features section where you can watch it over and over again in high quality. Who wouldn’t want to constantly watch Robert Downey Jr. tell Gwyneth Paltrow that he’s not on his cycle? We would.

Which opening do you prefer: the alternate version or the one used in the film?
