Judd Apatow has become the face of modern comedy films.  Whether it’s as director, writer, producer or all three, he’s the brains behind the operation. His latest is the upcoming romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement, directed by Nicholas Stoller, the man behind Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek (also movies of the Apatow universe). We recently had the chance to talk to Apatow and Stoller about the hallmarks of a successful comedy, as well as casting what feels like most of NBC’s Thursday night lineup in the film. Kentis and Lau are best known for their thrilling stranded-at-sea film Open Water, which also premiered at Sundance in 2004. While the challenges between Open Water and Silent House may be different, one thing is for sure – this duo loves a challenge. Their latest is shot in one continuous take, following up-and-coming actress Elizabeth Olsen during 88 minutes of thrilling real time. I got the chance to sit and talk to the couple about the challenges of shooting in real time, casting Lizzie Olsen, and how easy it is to make a movie these days.

In this true tale about ‘Operation Breakthrough,’ in which three gray whales were trapped and then freed from the ice in Alaska, Bell  plays a young journalist in search of the story that will make her career. Bell, who rose to fame when she starred on the hit TV show “Veronica Mars,” knows competition. Sure, she’s starred in a bunch of movies, and was even able to get on another show with Don Cheadle (“House of Lies”), but she’s aware that there’s always someone out waiting to take her job. We recently spoke to the actress, and she shared all sort of things. Did you know her dad was a newscaster? She told us that’s the reason she speaks in soundbites. The man behind the CGI curtain, reveals a new side to his filmmaking — director Roland Emmerich, known for his amazing special effects, is soon to be thought of for his heart and knowledge of Shakespeare. Anonymous, his up and coming film is a sexy way of giving people a possible history lesson, that somehow manages to also hold a great deal of meaning.

He took his time making this film, earning his stripes as a director over the past decades with numerous big budget hits. This is a risky film in a number of ways, one that I’m sure needed convincing, but something that Emmerich has quite obviously wanted to make for some time and believed in. He was right to take his time, because in doing so he was able to make this film in the right way, get the right script, with the right cast, be in a position to make bold calls and have people listen, and in the end, he was able to deliver the right message.
