Since exploding onto the big-screen in 1994 with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey has been in a fierce battle against his own image. Much like the late Peter Sellers, Carrey is a brilliant comic actor who seems almost slightly ashamed of his craft. As a result, he has attempted to branch out into more dramatic, artsy fare in recent years, with middling results. Because of this, the announcement that Carrey had signed on for Dumb & Dumber 2 (only his second sequel) came as a pleasant surprise. Will the film mark the beginning of a comedic rebirth for Carrey?

For those of you mulling over the purchase of a ticket to this outrageously stupid film, listen up: Typically we associate Jim Carrey with unwavering humor and Ewan McGregor with infectious charm. In the sheer disaster that is I Love You Phillip Morris, both actors give performances utterly barren of the aforementioned qualities. Co-written/directed by longtime creative partners Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the film (that I emphatically encourage all readers to avoid) opens in theaters nationwide this Friday.

Doesn’t it feel like we’ve been hearing about I Love You Phillip Morris for years now? The movie has bounced between several distributors but finally landed a solid deal with Liddell Entertainment and Roadside Attractions. The film stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as two men who meet in prison and begin a love affair. After a year of waiting, the Jim Carrey-Ewan McGregor film I Love You Phillip Morris is finally heading to theaters. Over the past 12 months it’s had more than its fair share of obstacles because of its so-called “controversial” content. The release date kept getting pushed back and it couldn’t find a U.S. distributor — until now. Roadside Attractions have stepped in and saved the day and film will now debut in theaters this December.

The news sparked a heated backlash online from fans and journalists (check out our choice words) who thought the decision was unfair. Our cries didn’t fall on deaf ears because according to Variety a new release date has been set and we’ll be able to see Morris in theaters after all.

The distribution history of the Jim Carrey film I Love You Phillip Morris has been rocky and sordid. Even though it has a major star as its lead (along with the amazing Ewan McGregor), Consolidated Pictures Group has decided not to release the film at the end of this month as planned.

In case anyone was wondering, I Love You Phillip Morris is about Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor being gay, gay, gay. I have no clue if the film will be half as fun as the trailer, but if it is, it could be one of the most entertaining films of the year. Although some annoying people have an issues with this film and its “graphic depiction of intimate homosexual relationships” nearly everyone at Sundance loved it and its about damn time we get some A-listers doing a gay romantic comedy.
Check out the trailer below…

The elusive comedy-drama I Love You Phillip Morris has gained some marketing momentum with the release of a new poster. The film is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and stars Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, and Rodrigo Santoro. Morris has been at the center of much controversy due to what some call “a graphic depiction of intimate homosexual relationships” between it’s main characters. It’s such a lame and unfair reason to shelve a film, but it looks as if it’s picked up some steam. The film is set for domestic release on February 12, 2010.
Check out the poster after the jump.
