In the race for the next big franchise, Lionsgate is now casting up their film series based on Suzanne Collins’ worldwide best seller The Hunger Games. Joining previously announced Jennifer Lawrence are now Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth for the Gary Ross-directed big screen version, which is set to open March 23, 2012. Lionsgate is obviously hoping they have the next Twilight-ish success with this franchise.

To end one of the more interesting searches for a leading lady, Lionsgate has signed Winter’s Bone’s Jennifer Lawrence for the lead role in The Hunger Games. It’s the first film in a post-apocalyptic trilogy based on the young adult novels by Suzanne Collins. Gary Ross will direct the film from a script by Billy Ray, with a release date set for March 23, 2012.

Gary Ross, helmer of films such as Seabiscuit and Pleasantville is in negotiations to take on The Hunger Games. According to Deadline, the feature adaptation is the first in the novel trilogy by author Suzanne Collins. Lionsgate will produce the film and has narrowed down Ross to direct. He’s just one of many candidates who’ve been circling the project including Sam Mendes and David Slade.
