It’s no secret that a sequel to last year’s How To Train Your Dragon is on the way. The movie was a critical and commercial success that brought some positive attention to DreamWorks Animation who were in dire need of a good film. The Shrek franchise has more than worn out its welcome. Last fall they revealed that How to Train Your Dragon 2 would hit theaters in 2013, and that the majority of the cast would return. Everyone’s name was on the list except for the one and only Gerard Butler. We thought he was a strange omission, so we’re happy to report that he’s finally been confirmed for the sequel.

There’s only one big budget movie coming out on DVD this week, and I have to admit that I thought it was already out. Seriously, why did the March release How To Train Your Dragon take this long to come out on DVD? It seems like we’re already starting to gear the kids up for Christmas! Other than that, DVD is pretty much a hodgepodge of bombs big (Jonah Hex) and small (Leaves of Grass) with other points in between.

Who kicked whose ass this weekend? The DreamWorks animated feature How to Train Your Dragon soared back to the number one spot grossing another $20 million dollars leaving newcomers Kick-Ass and Death at a Funeral in the dust. The Matthew Vaughn comic book adaptation came in at number 2 earning over $19 million dollars at the box office. With all of the positive reviews the film has received you’d think it would have done better. Was the marketing not enough or was Hit Girl’s foul mouth and bloody hands too much for general audiences to take? We may never know.

Is this a sign of the times? This past weekend DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon opened in theaters nationwide to disappointing numbers. It had “winner” written all over it with its family friendly rating, great animation, and let’s not forget it’s in 3D. The film did debut in the top spot, but only with 43 million dollars domestically, which is well below industry expectations. What happened?

There is a large variety to choose from this weekend. The film that has been getting a lot of buzz, not to mention some good reviews has been Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders’ fun family animation film, How to Train Your Dragon with voices by Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera. The film is about a young Viking who wants to hunt dragons but instead ends up the owner of a one. While trying to ”train” his dragon, he learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.
One film that definitely stood out this week is Chloe. Directed by Atom Egoyan, this drama is about a woman who hires an escort to seduce her husband, whom she suspects of cheating. The film is filled with twists and turns and is not a typical film you see every week — plus you get to see Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried in a steamy sex scene together.
Check out what’s coming out this week:
