Earlier this year NBC did us a favor by performing a mercy kill on “Heroes.” The fantasy series that showed so much promise during its first season had become unbearable by its fourth. When the series was officially canceled back in May there was a mixed reaction from fans. Some people wanted it to continue so it could redeem itself and others were happy to see it go. There was word that a TV movie might be in the works so they could tie up some loose ends but according to EW, that’s not going to happen.

A good mix of DVDs this week as we get both an attempted blockbuster (Kick-Ass) and several smaller films that almost made Rotten Tomatoes explode with good reviews (The Ghost Writer and A Prophet). Plus, if you have kids, you can pick up a DVD to entertain them why you check out one of these R-Rated flicks with Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Of course, you may also be a glutton for punishment so there’s the final season of “Heroes” to help you there. Plus the DVD you can’t believe is real.
Check out the new releases below…

Last week it was confirmed that NBC would no longer hemorrhage money from their bank account to produce Tim Kring’s sci-fi series, “Heroes.” The show ran for four seasons, introduced the world to Zachary Quinto, and unfortunately also Hayden Panetierre. The creator and writer recently wrote an open letter to fans of the series reacting to the network’s decision. Here’s what he had to say…

We never thought we would say this but, THANK YOU NBC! The network has kicked “Heroes” to the curb after four years that consisted of one good season and three that were visual cancer. Just yesterday we reported on the show’s uncertain future and now it’s been confirmed (doing multiple backflips in a row) that it’s over. Not only that but the network finally decided to give the action comedy “Chuck” another season, along with four new pilots.

Update: “Heroes” has been officially CANCELLED!!
When “Heroes” debuted on NBC back in 2006 it took the TV world by storm. The sci-fi show got under our skin and became one of the most watched programs on the network. But somehow, four years later the series that used to pull in 17 million viewers each week dropped to under 5 million. Many of us faulted the writers and the creative direction of Tim Kring but according to him there’s more than enough blame to go around…

Whatever you think of the TV show Heroes (it’s ok, you can admit that you watch it, even if it is pretty awful) you’ve got to admit that one of its stars, Hayden Panettiere, has got some moves when it comes to real-life heroics.
The 20-year-old actress and Save the Whales Again! Spokesperson (who, as captured in the Academy Award-winning documentary The Cove, surfed with several other protesters into the waters of Taiji, Japan in attempt to prevent the massacre of a group of dolphins before she and others were attacked by fishermen) returned to Taiji today to speak about the rampant killing of dolphins with the “mayor, city councilmen and Fisheries Union representatives,” according to E! Online.

Last night’s episode of “Heroes” entitled “Brave New World” brought season 4 to a close and possibly the entire show. Samuel was ready to act on his plan to kill hundreds of people in Central Park, while Peter, Sylar, Claire, and Noah all worked to stop him in their own way. The episode took a page from season one, by showing all the “heroes” working together for a single cause. Even Tracy showed up to help, and she’s far from my favorite character. Whether it was the end of the show or the beginning of a new chapter, this was one of the better finales “Heroes” has had in a very long time.

In this week’s episode of “Heroes” aptly titled, “The Wall,” we got to watch two of our favorite characters (Sylar and Peter) go at it. They had to push through their differences to achieve one goal, and that was to get the hell out of Matt Parkman’s basement. Last night it felt like we were watching an episode of “Lost,” because there were a lot of flashbacks from Noah’s past courtesy of a creepy, dread locked member of Samuel’s carnival, and if Noah’s involved that unfortunately means Claire isn’t too far behind. This episode was a lot better than what we’ve seen these past few weeks, which probably has something do with the upcoming finale.

Tuesday night, Sundance saw the World Premier of It’s a Wonderful Afterlife, the new film by Gurinder Chadha, director of Bend It Like Beckham. It is a film about many things; Indian women in London taking charge of their lives, couples’ need for honesty in their relationships, mothers’ responsibilities to their daughters, and murderers responsibilities to their victims. Ms. Chadha presented the film, warning the audience that it was “really weird,” and hoping they would be willing to join her on the ride. Check out the review after the jump…
