New Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Trailer

Despite the highs and lows that the Harry Potter series has taken, despite the different imaginings of different directors, despite all the hype being built up for this one final film and all the critics arguing over which film is the best and why this new film will be this or that; when I hear John Williams subtle yet strong theme seep onto the screen, no matter what anyone has said, or even what I’ve said, I can’t help get chills down my spine. The finale for Harry Potter has been a long time coming, this is a story that we’ve lived with for a decade, with seven films down and only one left to go.

After it all, while watching this latest trailer I can’t help but be filled with the same sense of awe and wonder that I can still recall back in 2001 when I saw the first trailer for the first film. Wow…

There’s no doubt that the special effects in this film will in fact be THE BEST we see this year. There’s just no way around it. They’ve mastered the art and paired it with an amazing cinematographer Eduardo Serra, stunning sets and probably some of the best production design ever seen — this trailer shows us that once again they will conquer. The 3-D is still up for debate, but there’s no doubt that you will be visually astounded by this film and that ILM will be winning another Oscar.

I spoke with David Yates over the phone last year for Part 1 of the Deathly Hallows where he assured me that this film would in fact be the action half to the previously more dramatic and plot building film…

David Yates: I am very, very fond of Part 1, it’s much more melancholic and haunted and intense than Part 2, which is more of an action film. There’s much more spectacle and battled and dragons and things. I’m still working on Part 2. I’m excited about both of them for different reasons… I’m very excited about just getting to the end of the story and the big action stuff which is quite fun for an audience.

I for one can’t wait to see the action come July 17th!

New DVD Releases: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Country Strong

There’s really not much coming out on DVD this week, no TV, no big time special editions just a couple very small films and one mega-behemoth about a boy wizard about whom you may have heard.

Yes, Harry Potter is back on DVD for the seventh time with part one of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. But is this necessarily a good thing?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1

This movie gives me pause because I feel like it’s starting a dangerous trend. We saw it here, and we will see it again with the Twilight series: studios splitting films in two in order to make more money.

Now it’s true, there are creative reasons for doing this with each of these films – the books are very long, there’s more chance to explore the plot, etc. – But don’t for a second think that creative reasons factored within 1/100th of the importance that money did in these studios decisions to split these books into two films.

It’s just good business. Why would you stick to just one $500 million profit machine when you could make two just as easily with the same level of risk? It’s foolish not to.

Until you realize how this may apply down the road. Look at the next hot kiddie property – “The Hunger Games”. If these first two films do boffo box office biz, what’s to stop the studio from turning “Mockingjay” into a two-parter. Don’t worry about the fact that it’s half as long as the final “Harry Potter” book – two movies will make more money than one. It just makes sense.

And if that happens, what’s the next logical step? Breaking books down by chapters? Telling every story from multiple characters’ perspectives? Rebooting the book series as a new film franchise once you’ve run out of source material? It’s all in play now.

First it’s Potter, then “Twilight”, next it’s “The Hobbit”. Just you wait. That nine-part adaptation of “The Giver” is right around the corner.

The long running Harry Potter film franchise will come to an end this summer with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. The film will feature the battle we’ve all been waiting for and it will truly mark the end of an era. Warner Bros has released two photos from the movie that feature stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in some highly stressful situations. What’s going on?! Take a look…

Sorry guys! The Potter photos have been removed at the request of Warner Bros Pictures.

What are Harry and Hermione looking at in the close up photo? The object seems to be blurred at the edge of the picture. Whatever it is, they’re concerned about it. The other photo shows them standing in a tossed room, where they’ve been backed into a corner. Someone is after them and they’re scared, just look at Harry’s face!

What the heck happened in that room?! Everything appears to be upside down and disoriented. Does this scene play out in the book? If so, where? If you have any advanced Potter knowledge, please share!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II will be released in 3D and 2D on July 15, 2011.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I Sets IMAX Record

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I became one of the highest grossing sequels in the franchise’s history when it earned $125 million last weekend. That’s a lot of love for a film that wasn’t given an extra boost from inflated 3D ticket prices. According to Coming Soon there’s more good news to spread because IMAX has just announced that The Deathly Hallows Part I has set a new worldwide opening record!

In a press release sent out to the media, IMAX confirmed that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I grossed $16.1 million worldwide setting a brand new record. A good chunk of its earnings came from domestic audiences who brought in $11.8 million alone, with the film appearing on 239 screens all over the country.

“These record-breaking numbers are a true testament to the overwhelmingly positive response internationally to our latest installment of Harry Potter,” said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. “We’re thrilled to be working with IMAX once again to deliver such a unique viewing experience to audiences around the world as we conclude this beloved series.”

Even though the film didn’t break any major box office records in conventional theaters it dominated IMAX. Here’s to hoping that The Deathly Hallows Part II comes in and finishes the job. Harry deserves to go out on top don’t you think?

Weekend Box Office: Harry Potter Makes $125 Million

The latest installment in the Harry Potter series debuted at number one last weekend earning over $125 million – who’s surprised? This makes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I (movie review) the second most financially successful film in the franchise (the first being Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in November 2005). But this year’s wizard-boy movie did break one record during its opening night by making $24 million, which was the biggest midnight gross in the series. Also new last week was Russell Crowe‘s The Next Three Days (movie review) but unfortunately it was nowhere near as successful (it’s at No. 5). It looks like another fall for the Crowe.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Earns 24 Million at Midnight

Harry Potter fans came out in droves for the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The film, which marks the beginning of the end, is Part I of the final chapter in the Potter story. Early estimates have already come in regarding how much money the film made last night, and we’re hearing a healthy $24 million.

The Deathly Hallows opened in a reported 3,700 theaters across the country that were offering midnight screenings. Most of those venues had already sold out their tickets weeks in advance of the release. With that type of dedication you’d think that Potter’s fans would have been able to take down those damn vampires from Twilight, but unfortunately they didn’t.

The $24 million is a record setting number for the Potter series but it falls short of the midnight opening of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which raked in $30 million at midnight this time last year. We don’t doubt the dedication of Potter fans vs Twilight fans because of these numbers. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. Potter is about magic and good versus evil, and at the center of Twilight there’s a romance story.

We’re sure when The Deathly Hallows:Part II hits theaters all bets will be off.

Video: Harry Potter Stars Say Twilight Sucks in Their Best American Accents

This weekend, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : Part I will finally hit theaters. The film’s stars have been on a whirlwind promotional tour, and during it they met up with MTV’s Josh Horowitz to play a game on “American Talk.” It’s a segment where he interviewed the cast and got them to say various phrases using an American accent. Who do you think does the best Yankee impression? Find out below…

Horowitz interviewed Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Tom Felton and got them to put their acting talents to the test. Most of the film’s we’ve seen them in outside of Potter allows them to use their native British accents, but in this video they don’t have such comforts. They have to read whatever is on the card handed to them including “The Olive Garden,” “Glenn Beck,” and wait for it… “Twilight Sucks!”

Out of this group it seemed as if Felton was the most comfortable with the American. Did you notice how much enthusiasm he had in his voice? Most importantly, did you notice how easily the words “Twilight Sucks” rolled off his tongue? We can’t fault him for feeling the way he does about that.

Interview: Director David Yates Talks Harry Potter

This weekend in theaters David Yates‘ film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 hits theaters. We had a chance to speak to Yates over the phone to talk to him about finishing the last two Potter films, where he’s at in post-production with the second part of Deathly Hallows, having his own voice in the franchise and he talks about why Part 1 is his favorite Potter film!

What is it like coming to the conclusion of such a massive project?

David Yates: Combination of feelings I would guess. For me personally it’s quote sad. I’ve been with it for about five and half years but there’s also a tremendous sense of relief because it’s been quite all consuming on every single level. It’s just lovely to get to that point where you can finally let go a little bit. For David Heyman, my producer who has been with it for ten years and the young cast, Daniel, Emma, Rupert and some of the others, it’s quite a huge deal. This is their childhood that they’re letting go of in a way. It’s full of mixed emotions for everybody and it’s kind of a combination of almost… we’re kind of near the end of all that work that everyone has been sustaining for so long, that still keeps to be reaching and sustaining audiences and they’re still responding. They’re still coming in such numbers in fact it seems to be building… and sadness as well that it’s finishing

Part 2 work? You’re still working away on that one, no?

DY: Yes, very much so! I’m editing at the moment. So just before the UK premiere I was working with my editor Mark Day back in London and we haven’t quite got to the point yet of a director’s cut, which is the first cut before I show it to anybody including the producers or the studio. So I don’t present anything to anybody until February of next year or something. So it’s still go a couple months of editing and then through March, April, May. June it’s all the level of work that comes which is fine tuning the visual effects and the music and all that kind of thing.

So there’s a lot more to do?

DY: Yeah, it’s pretty full on up until next summer.

Who does this film belong to? How much do you consider this your film?

DY: There is something about Harry Potter, which it’s hard for anyone to territorialize it. I think it’s because it’s so big and so popular and so loved. I would first and foremost go back to J.K Rowling who created these absolutely wonderful books. And then beyond that I think, myself included, and the previous directors and all of us, kind of pour everything we’ve got into these films. In a way we’re kind of curators of this national treasure that everyone has such affection for. As a director, I don’t feel particularly territorial about it at. Especially since Christopher Columbus kicked off the world and then Mike Newman and Alfonso came in and we’ve contributed, it’s like one big, great mosaic. That everyone has got up and put their own work into it. We’ve all kind of dived in to represent and capture some of those things which have really the attention and affection of a worldwide audience.

So do you consider yourself just part of the Potter group?

DY: I’m really cool about being part of that wonderful group of people who have all put their best efforts in. It’s really weird when you get to this stage and the film’s coming out, it’s so much more than one person’s film of a group of people’s film. I have a group of wonderful collaborators – my production designer, editor, composer, cameraman — it’s even bigger than the wonderful cast that we have even though they’re the focal point, quite quite rightly, for so many of the fans because they’re wonderful and gifted and adorable. It’s so much bigger than any of us. It’s this extraordinary thing that’s just kind of grabbed everyone’s imagination.

How do you get your own voice to come through?

DY: I make a thousand decisions a week creatively, I can tell you that ultimately this has been the most creative, fulfilling job I’ve ever had in many ways. There’s not a frame of the film that goes out that has not been through my hands as it were, that I have no approved or spent hours sweating over. So it’s still that but equally, I’m totally cool about stepping aside from it and saying well it’s Harry Potter- I’m totally at peace with that and have been form the outset. I just felt like – there’s something more going on here and I have the rest of my career ahead of me. I was busy before and I’ll be busy after. I’m proud of the work, I think it’s good work but I don’t crave glory from it, it’s just my contribution and I’m very happy about that.

Why do you think there is such a desire for franchises now?

DY: I think that notion of a rolling narratives, where you’re inviting an audience back is a part of big, modern cinema in the 21st century. I think these big franchise movies all have an element of that and I think that audiences who have a huge fondness for the characters you want to continue the story with them.

Which of the two films coming up are you most excited about?

DY: I am very, very fond of Part 1, it’s much more melancholic and haunted and intense than Part 2, which is more of an action film. There’s much more spectacle and battled and dragons and things. I’m still working on Part 2. I’m excited about both of them for different reasons. I like the intimacy of Part 1, the character detail and the quieter moments in Part 1, but I’m very excited about just getting to the end of the story and the big action stuff which is quite fun for an audience.

What are some of the main differences between UK and US audiences?

DY: I adore American audiences. They’re much more enthusiastic, they’re much more ready to show their vocal appreciation for certain things.

They’re louder basically?

DY: Yes, they’re louder! Which is great if you’ve spent so much time making a movie. If you want them to clap and cheer they do so. In England the intense feeling is there but they’re much more polite. It’s cliche but it’s absolutely true. What always strikes me is how many people from all over the world that tell me how massive the films are in India, Argentina, Costa Rica and what staggers me is that when you know that in Brazil there’s this massive audience. That’s what I find really intriguing and amazing and wonderful.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I opens in theaters on November 19th and Part II opens on July 15, 2011. Both films are directed by David Yates.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I debuts in theaters this Friday, November 19, but apparently three days is too long for some people. According to Torrent Freak, a copy of the film has already leaked online and hundreds of thousands of people are already downloading it. This is a bad move for multiple reasons, including the fact that it might be a cover to bring viruses and trojans onto your computer.

This Harry Potter leak has to be one of the most undesirable of them all. Its predecessor Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was downloaded 8 million times, and it was a complete copy of the film. The Deathly Hallows torrent only has 36 minutes of the movie on it, therefore, what’s the point? Whoever put it on the web could have gotten the footage from a partial screener, which could actually act as a huge advertisement for the film and make more people want to go out and see it.

Besides it not being a full copy, some suspect that hackers are using the torrent as a front to attack your computer. “According to internet security firm PC Tools, websites are popping up in online searches offering a free download of the movie. What makes things more confusing than normal is that scammers posing as fans are posting comments and reviews to lure fans to the sites”

This is definitely one of those cases where you just shouldn’t download. It’s definitely not worth it. Don’t put your computer in danger and don’t half-ass a viewing experience of 36 minutes when you can get the full and real thing in a few days.

9 New Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Photos

Warner Bros has heavily promoted the final installment of Harry Potter over the past year and next weekend it will all come to ahead. But before we get our first glimpse of the beginning of the end, the studio has released a ridiculous amount of photos from the film. They feature all the usual suspects including the young trio of wizards and some nasty villains. Take a look…

Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction–the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart. It sounds like The Deathly Hallows will start off on a dark note.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I opens in theaters on November 19th and Part II opens on July 15, 2011. Both films are directed by David Yates.
