Harrison Ford Not Up For Blade Runner Sequel

Though Harrison Ford may have made peace with he original Blade Runner, Alcon Entertainment (who’s producing the sequel) has made it clear that he’s not in talks to star in Ridley Scott‘s follow up and they have no interest in using his character. Word hit yesterday that Ford might be up for a role, but Deadline Hollywood contacted the producers who said no such thing would happen.

When Blade Runner came out in 1982, it was Harrison Ford’s first high-profile bomb. Up until that point he had appeared in three of the most successful films of all time (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark), and Blade Runner was considered a huge misstep. He followed it with Star Wars and Indy sequels, and then appeared in Witness.

Ford might have mellowed on the film since then (at least he appeared in the supplements of the massive five-disc Blade Runner DVD and Blu-ray), but this rumor always seemed unlikely. Of course with a film like this – which is in pre-production – there’s always going to be interesting rumors and news about the project. Likely the fate of the project will rest on the success or failure of Scott’s Prometheus, which comes out this summer.

Could Harrison Ford be in the Blade Runner Sequel?

It’s worth taking this with a grain of salt, but Twitchfilm is reporting that Harrison Ford may take a role in Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner spin-off. Though they don’t have direct quotes – and the story may be updated later in the day – it suggests a direct sequel, which has not been what anyone’s said in the past. In fact, Scott said it would have none of the original cast members. If Ford does jump on board, surely Sean Young will see if there’s a role for her too.

This then brings up the question that Scott made unsubtle in his director’s cuts of the first film: is Harrison Ford’s character Deckard a replicant? Whereas in the theatrical cut there were some ambiguous clues, the latter versions leave less to interpretation and Scott has said point blank that he is a “skin job.” If Ford is involved, will they go the Tron Legacy route and de-age him? Or will he play Deckard at all?

But adding Ford has to be attractive – it would give the new film another level of anticipation, though it’s worth remembering that Blade Runner bombed when released in 1982. Much like Tron. And much like John Carpenter’s The Thing, which also inspired a spin-off. And none of their reboots/sequels/etc. did particularly well at the box office. But maybe this will be different…

News Round-Up: Daniel Radcliffe, Mickey Rourke and More

Piles of bits and pieces for the day:

- Mickey Rourke is getting his handprints immortalized at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. The theater has recently been offering more people to get their prints in their cement, with the Twilight Cast also recently were announced to be hand dippers as well. Part of this is trying to bring new life to the theater, which has been eclipse fiscally by the Arclight theater down the street.

- Daniel Radcliffe‘s got a new movie that isn’t Harry Potter, and there’s a teaser for it. The film is called The Woman in Black. Check it out…

- Harrison Ford knows of Uncharted, which seems drawn from the Indiana Jones films. Heck, he’s even played it.

Chronicle is a found footage superhero movie. Found footage is wearing out its welcome like woah, but the central conceit of this looks pretty good:

The most recognizable face there is Michael B. Jordan, familiar to fans of The Wire and Friday Night Lights.

- Mark Romanek is considered the front runner for The Lost Symbol, according to Deadline Hollywood. Romanek is coming off of Never Let Me Go, a film which I thought was the best film of last year, but also one that didn’t make much of an impact. romanek may need to make a film that makes some money, and this is something of a safe bet, even if it’s a sequel to The Da Vinci Code.

Cowboys and Aliens: Movie Review

This weekend in theaters, Favreau is back with two grumpy, bad-asses, Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford with his latest genre twist, Cowboys & Aliens. The film is big and bad, with plenty of explosions and known faces, but it never quite delivered on anything I was hoping for. The biggest problem with this film is that it’s very much a Western, with alien bad-guys, that never really evokes the natural comedy that one would imagine should come with a film titled “Cowboys& Aliens”. The Plot:

The film is set in Arizona in 1873 in the midst of the gold rush in the wild west, a time where men were real men. Suddenly a spaceship arrives to take over the Earth and a posse of cowboys have to take them down before all of their friends and family are farmed by the aliens.

The Good:

Rockwell: He has a small role, but was by far the most humorous and interesting to watch. Rockwell seems to have a power on screen that sucks you in and makes you care about him even in the most trivial of roles. Favreau also works best with funny, quick-witted actors, that seem to enjoy their time on camera. He knows how to let them play and they know how to deliver. The combo was great in the Iron Man films and wonderful here as well.
Scares: This was the first time in a long time that aliens actually managed to scare an audience. In a film that was very bland, it was great to have a few powerful “jump” moments… if only there would have been more of that in the tone from the start, this may have been a kick-ass film…

The Bad:

Lack of Humor: For a film with such a humorous title they sure do take themselves extremely seriously. Everything about the film is serious, and Favreau doesn’t thrive in that genre. The film touches on horror aspects which to me sounds like a fun idea… I guess it’s a little too late to throw our that suggestion though? If you’re going to make a film “Cowboys and Aliens,” give the audience what they’re looking for, some humor and an epic battle between the two, this film has neither of the two.
Pleasant, Tough Old Men: You have Craig and Harrison, who are both old(er), cranky, tough guys — use it to the film’s advantage! Don’t rely on daddy issues, let the two have at it! Watching them bounce off one another could have been extremely funny, but instead, they played everything so damn seriously and the script was written without much humor and therefore their relationship was extremely flat and there was no real chemistry between two. They’re naturally grouchy, and have great timing… let us see it!
Writing/Writers: 5 screenwriter, 3 story writers and 1 comic book writer = 1 inconsistent mess with no real sense of self and no consistent tone throughout.

Overall:

It’s just not what it could have been and it’s a shame, though it’s not bad with a drink and a bucket of popcorn.

Shia LaBeouf Confirms That George Lucas Is ‘Looking’ For Indiana Jones 5

Because George Lucas and Steven Spielberg didn’t completely destroy all of the public goodwill directed towards the character of Indiana Jones with the utterly atrocious Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it appears that there may be a fifth film starring the ever-adventurous Dr. Jones, at least according to Crystal Skull costar Shia LaBeouf, so says the AV Club:

“I talked to Harrison, he said he’s staying in the gym, he said he’s heard no word, but he does know that George [Lucas] is out there looking for a MacGuffin. He said he’s staying in the gym, so it means, you know, it’s not so far off.”

So as long as Ford keeps himself in a gym to stay relatively well-muscled (in that leathery old guy kind of way), the torch stays lit for the fact that Lucas and Spielberg, despite both having more money than, well, anybody, are returning to the well to create more nostalgia-ravaging crap to kidnap our childhood hero’s and hijack them for even further financial gain and even further critical disappointment. Also, it appears that this is part of a long-reaching plan on behalf of Hollywood’s power-players (including Michael Bay) to somehow bestow fame and wealth onto Shia LaBewhatever. It’s diabolical, I tell you—simply diabolical.

New Cowboys And Aliens Trailer

One of the more interesting summer movies this year is Jon Favreau‘s Cowboys and Aliens, which opens July 29. It stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, and Oliva Wilde, and combines science fiction action (and invasion) with the old west. The latest trailer finally starts giving more details of the film’s narrative, and more of a look at the alien invasion and some of their tools. Take a look..

The new thing seems to be that at least the middle section of the movie will be dedicated to chasing after the aliens (which reminds me of Rango a little), and that for sure either Olivia Wilde is an alien, or had some experiences with them. Perhaps she’s some sort of Yoda for Craig’s character.

The two things about this film that concern me most are the director and Harrison Ford. Jon Favreau’s Iron Man films partly get over because of the performers, but the second film got away from pretty much everybody. Hopefully this is more reigned in. As per Ford, he’s older now, and the last couple of performances have been harder to watch because he doesn’t always seem on the ball. Ford still carries great weight as an icon, but it’s been a while since he’s given much of a performance (though he wasn’t bad in Morning Glory).

We’ll know for sure this summer, but for now the trailer offers spectacle.It’s also nice that one of the event films of the summer isn’t a sequel (though it is based on a comic book).

Cowboys and Aliens Super Bowl Commercial

With TV spots from Captain America, Thor, and Super 8, did you really think that Cowboys & Aliens would sit this one out? Super Bowl Sunday is the premiere place to advertise summer blockbusters and Jon Favreau’s latest got in on the action. The film is slated to hit theaters this May, and blends multiple genres including western and sci-fi. Check out the TV spot…

Cowboys & Aliens center on outer-space creatures who land in Arizona circa the mid-19th century intent on enslaving the local population — until a group of cowboys and Apache Indians fight back. Craig will play Zeke Jackson, the revolt leader and a very talented gunman. The cast of the film also includes Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Noah Ringer, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Adam Beach, and Abigail Spencer.

Here’s a more detailed plot synopsis for the film:

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Daniel Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Harrison Ford Wants to Kill Off Indiana Jones?

Ever since the release of 2008′s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, there have been rumors regarding a fifth installment in the franchise. George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Shia Labeouf, and the man himself Harrison Ford are all up for it, it’s just a matter of finding the right story to explore. According to Ford, his idea for the next film might not be welcomed by fans. It takes Jones on a somewhat fatal journey…

Ford thinks that it would be great to kill off Indiana Jones in the next sequel but to say that he’s being met with some reservation is an understatement. According to ShowbizSpy Ford said,

“George especially is resisting the notion but Steven is considering it. Funnily enough Harrison wanted the same for Han Solo in the final Star Wars but George put an end to it. This time he doesn’t have all the say though.”

What’s with Ford always wanting to get rid of his characters? But in all honesty Han Solo didn’t have the best ending in the original Star Wars trilogy so he somewhat got what he wanted. If they did give Ford the axe that would leave the door open for Mutt Williams to take over where his dad left off and people aren’t really up for that. Williams wasn’t exactly loved by all when he first came on the scene.

Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Paul Dano and Noah Ringer are set for one wild ride in Jon Favreau‘s latest western, sci-fi, comedic action-adventure (talk about playing with genres!) written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindel entitled Cowboys and Aliens! This is quite possibly the oddest mixture of talent and story, but what can we say, we’re fascinated and we’ve been dying for some more footage from the film. Lucky us has just received some brand-spanking new photos of the three main characters and a fun little teaser trailer.

Favreau sure does like that font for his film titles. Despite how stupid the concept for this film may seem, I just can’t wait for it! We have yet to see Sam Rockwell, Noah Ringer or Paul Dano — I’m guessing they’re aliens. What do you think?

Morning Glory: Movie Review

This week you can expect a pleasant surprise when you stumble across Roger Michell’s latest film, Morning Glory. While maneuvering your way through alien invasion flicks and movies about runaway freight trains, Morning Glory is a hilarious alternative with great performances and a sharp screenplay.

The Plot:

Becky (McAdams) is a workaholic whose dream is to executive produce a national morning show — specifically NBC’s “The Today Show.” A monkey wrench is thrown into her plans when she’s fired from her current job and forced to move in with her mother until she can get back on her feet. Luckily for her, a position opens up at the lowest rated morning show in the country called “Daybreak.” Despite her lack of experience, and the lack of respect she receives from the cast and crew, Becky makes it her business to make the show a success.

She finds a loophole in the contract of a legendary news anchor named Mike Pomeroy (Ford) that forces him to join “Daybreak” as a co-anchor. Her drive to push the sensational envelope and his style of no nonsense journalism make the two an unlikely pair. In other words, inappropriate jokes and hijinks ensue!

The Good:

The Humor: This film is legitimately funny. The banter between all of the characters is snarky but still fresh and clever. For the first time, in a long time you’ll feel like you’re watching a genuine workplace comedy. Morning Glory has “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” written all over it with the only difference being words like “shit” and “pap smear” being said on camera.
The Set Design: The set up for “Daybreak” is supposed to mimic that of “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America” and it’s obvious. There’s a hardcore, low key newsroom, and a bright, over the top stage that features the on air talent. It’s a carbon copy.
Rachel McAdams: A lot of people consider The Notebook to be Rachel McAdams’ breakout movie, but she had to share the spotlight with two other guys there. In Morning Glory she does her fair share of sparring with Ford but the heart and soul of the film is Becky. She’s smart, quirky, relatable, and most importantly likable enough for audiences to enjoy the performance. McAdams does an amazing job.
The Tone: Judging from the trailer, Morning Glory looks somewhat goofy, but the movie does have its tender moments. It knows when to make you laugh and when to make you cry. There’s a time and a place for everything and Morning Glory is aware of that.

The Bad:

More Jeff Goldblum Please: I love dramatic Jeff Goldblum, and sci-fi action Jeff Goldblum, but comedic Jeff Goldblum has to be the best out of the bunch and he was nowhere to be seen in this movie. He dropped a couple of quips here and there but he was mostly the straight man against McAdam’s character.

Overall:

Morning Glory is a really entertaining, refreshing, and funny workplace comedy that features A-list talent bringing their A-game. This is definitely worth your hard earned money this weekend.

Harrison Ford Looking Forward to Indiana Jones 5

Harrison Ford has been busy promoting his latest film Morning Glory, and as you know, you can’t have Ford next to a mic without asking him about Star Wars or Indiana Jones. When the actor sat down with the folks over at MTV, he gave a status update on Indiana Jones 5, which we’ve been hearing about for over a year. Will it or won’t it get made? Find out below…

According to Ford, the ball is in George Lucas‘ court. If he can get all three of the original parts of the franchise together again, including himself and Steven Spielberg Ford is in!

“It’s on George’s plate,” Ford said of an Indy sequel. “And I’m hoping he’s working hard at it, because I’d look forward to doing it again if the three of us could get together — George, [director] Steven Spielberg, myself — I’d love to do another.”

Unfortunately, Ford refuses to give any plot details regarding the Indy sequel stating, “I’m not at liberty to tell you what I know and what I don’t know.”

We know a lot of you had issues with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but the movie still made an obscene amount of money ($786 million worldwide) at the box office. It was one of the highest grossing films of 2008, which pretty much gave the studio an indication that you wanted to see more. Just cross your fingers that flying monkeys and aliens won’t be involved this time.

Top Five Election Day Movies

It has been a very strange year in politics, and it’s only going to get stranger on Election Day. Will the ever-polarizing Christine O’Donnel win? Will Sarah Palin join the cast of “Dancing with the Stars”? Will Sean Penn make an extremely controversial statement related to Hugo Chavez and human rights? All I know is this – if you are planning on watching a movie on Election Day, it should be one of the five listed below:

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

What happens when you put Frank Capra and Jimmy Stewart together? Instant masterpiece. Jimmy Stewart plays Jefferson Smith, and turns in one of the greatest acting performances of all time. Elected officials should be required to watch this movie, and remember whom they are fighting for. Jefferson Smith is the President this country deserves!

JFK

Kevin Costner was a fantastic actor in his prime, and JFK was his piece de resistance (with all due respect to Bull Durham and Field of Dreams fans). Not only was Costner in his prime, but Oliver Stone was not so bad himself. Conspiracy theorists and history buffs alike should watch JFK, and appreciate every minute of this three-plus hour masterpiece. The all-star casts includes Costner, Gary Oldman, Sissy Spacek, Jack Lemmon, and Seinfeld’s Wayne Knight.

Clear and Present Danger

If Jefferson Smith is America’s ideal President, then Jack Ryan should be his running mate. Harrison Ford is much a boy scout as he is a badass in this Phillip Noyce directed Clancy adaptation about a President who has taken matters in his own hands. Clear and Present Danger sheds some light on the cartels in South America, and their vicious battle to control the drug trade to the US, which in and of itself is relevant to modern times.

All the President’s Men

Robert Redford absolutely shines as Bob Woodward, and Dustin Hoffman as Carl Bernstein – the reporters who broke Watergate. All the President’s Men is a great example of how journalists can wield their power for good, and in the process, make a significant impact. Also, for those of you who are into contemporary history, you are probably familiar with Woodward’s recent books on Bush and Obama (which make Woodward relevant again).

The Manchurian Candidate (the original, not the crappy remake)

The last one was definitely a tough call, but I have to give the nod to The Manchurian Candidate. A sinister assassination plot + political intrigue make this nail-biter an all time classic. Definitely worth a re-watch on Election Day should you feel compelled; fantastic performance by Sinatra.
