Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the legendary fast-talking intellectual sleuth Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie‘s sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Jude Law also returns as Holmes’s faithful best friend and sidekick Dr. Watson. This time, the two travel to exotic places like Paris and Switzerland with the sole purpose of taking down the villainous Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), an influential scholar and close friend to the British prime minister. Joining them in their journey is Noomi Rapace, the Swedish actress who became an international success thanks to her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; comedian Stephen Fry plays Holmes’s snobby older brother. Let’s see if this blockbuster is worth your jolly golly time this Holiday season.

The Players:

Director: Guy Ritchie

Writer: Michele Mulroney, Kieran Mulroney, and Arthur Conan Doyle

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Jared Harris, and Noomi Rapace

Cinematography: Philippe Rousselot

The Plot:

Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson take on a new criminal mastermind, Professor Moriarty. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes concludes that the prince has been the victim of a murder designed to look like a suicide by Professor Moriarty. Holmes and the Doctor set out to expose Professor Moriarty for what he really is, but he proves to be a fierce adversary.

The Good:

Robert Downey Jr. Is A Star: The true star of this movie is RDJ. With his charm and wit, RDJ’s Holmes keeps this movie alive. Whether he’s dressed in drag or covered in dirt, he is always entertaining to watch.

The Sleuth And His Sidekick: RDJ and Jude Law have mastered their brother-like relationship on the screen. They know each other better than they know themselves. In this sequel, Holmes is sad – though he denies it – to see his best friend and partner in crime-solving get hitched. Unfortunately, because of the lack of story (see below), that’s all we see. The film doesn’t explore how things will be now that Dr. Watson is married. Sometimes the two talk about their future, but these conversations are overshadowed by plot and action. Still, the chemistry is there. RDJ may be the star, but behind every great detective, there’s a great sidekick. Jude Law brings out the best in RDJ.

Noomi Rapace: Sherlock Holmes is Rapace’s first American movie. It’s endearing watching her play with two Hollywood big shots. Despite being a relatively newcomer, Rapace never allows herself to be overshadowed by RDJ or Jude Law. In part, this is thanks to Ritchie who didn’t cast Rapace as a replacement for Rachel McAdams, instead she plays a badass gypsy who needs no looking after. Here, she’s doing the saving.

Professor Moriarty: Although Jared Harris isn’t as charming as our hero, he’s the perfect match – intelligent, arrogant and, he’s even got an evil grin.

The So-So:

Clever Cinematography: Throughout the movie, there’s this recurring sequence where Holmes calculates the outcome of a certain fight seconds before it happens. While this is a unique way to play out a fighting scene, it could be a bit distracting and insulting. The big problem with this clever cinematography is that it’s not just showing us what is going to happen, but Holmes is describing his every move. Filmmaking 101: Show, don’t tell. Yes, the slow motion, attention to detail and loud sound effects look and sound amazing, but by the end, Ritchie’s method is exhausted. He’s spoon-feeding his audience and that’s insulting. He doesn’t allow his audience the chance to figure anything out.

The Bad:

They Forgot About The Story: Despite the great performances in the movie, it’s sad to say that each character, with the exception of Holmes, is mostly used to move the plot forward. At a glance, Sherlock Holmes has some great topics both political and personal, but none of these are ever explored. It’s always about solving the murder and getting rid of the bad guy.

Overall:

Sherlock Holmes is a movie for the masses – there’s exotic locations, tons of action and a charming and witty hero. Though some of us may want more story than plot, let’s face it, 70% of the box office revenue will come from overseas audiences where plot is king. Does Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows entertain? You bet it does.

Rating: 6.5/10

See Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in theaters on December 16, 2011.

For the past two years, we’ve heard that Warner Bros has been developing a sequel to the Zack Snyder film 300. At last year’s Comic-Con the director confirmed that he was working on the follow up but according to Vulture, that might not be the case. The site claims that Sherlock Holmes helmer Guy Ritchie is up for the position.

Warner Bros has offered Ritchie the director’s chair for the sequel which is based on an upcoming comic book from 300 creator Frank Miller. Xerxes is said to tell of the history of the “King of Kings” and his rise to power in fifth-century-BC Persia. Supposedly beginning about ten years before 300.

Why is Warner Bros taking Xerxes away from Snyder? Some suspect it’s because they need him to buckle down and focus on his Superman reboot, Man of Steel. Another theory is that the studio no longer trusts the director with the franchise. Apparently recent test screenings of his latest film Sucker Punch haven’t been doing that well.

Says one insider familiar with it, “It was bad; like, really bad. They’re [Warners brass] really not happy with it over there.”

We don’t know how much we buy of the last theory. We understand that he’s already signed on for Superman, but if they really had doubts about his talent they would yank that away in a heartbeat. Supes is the studio’s golden goose!

What do you think of Ritchie possibly directing Xerxes?

Rumors regarding the sequel to Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes being shot in 3D are heating up as the screenplay for the film comes close to being finished. It seems that Warner Bros has been in talks with Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the writers/producers of the Holmes‘ sequel about making the next Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law collaboration in 3-D.

It is obvious that this wasn’t the producer’s vision in the beginning but the negotiations are getting serious. Does this mean every big blockbuster from here-on-out has to be shot or converted into the 3-D format in order for it to be successful? This trend is over-saturating the market and will probably continue until these films start to bomb at the box office.

The first Holmes was pretty entertaining and if the 3-D aspect can bring more excitement to the sequel then we’re all for it. But don’t just throw it in there as a gimmick to make money. There’s been no confirmation regarding whether or not the producers have decided to take Warners’ advice but we do know that Kieran stated, “Sherlock would be great in 3-D.” That’s not a good sign.

Do you want the Sherlock Holmes sequel to be in 3-D?

It sounds like Guy Ritchie wants to stick with a sure thing, and the box office hit Sherlock Holmes is as sure as it gets. We haven’t heard a lot about the film’s success due to the overshadowing of Avatar, but it’s grossed almost 390 million dollars worldwide. According to the most recent reports, Ritchie is focusing all his attention of the upcoming detective sequel and leaving the DC Comics adaptation of Lobo in the dust.

According to the Hero Complex, there’s been a massive shift in Ritchie’s priorities and Lobo is no longer one of them. Super-producer Joel Silver recently gave an interview to the blog where he dropped the bomb that Ritchie’s no longer interested in doing the comic book movie. How would he know? Well, Silver is one of the producers on Holmes and Lobo, and will be working on the sequel as as well. It turns out that Warner Bros wants to capitalize on the film’s success and turn it into a full fledged franchise as soon as possible. Here’s what Silver had to say,

“I don’t think he’s going to do it now. The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another Sherlock Holmes… So we’re trying to see if we can do something quickly with another Sherlock Holmes movie. We have some ideas and some good story points.”

He went on to say that they’ll likely go with another director for Lobo (as if they have a choice). The whole gang is expected to return to the Sherlock fold including stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Silver stated that, “Downey loves the experience of playing Sherlock and would love to play him again, and I’d love to see him play it again.”

If you’ve seen the previous movie, you know the ending is left wide open for a new villain to emerge, and rumors have been circulating that he could be played by Brad Pitt. Silver wouldn’t confirm the speculation, but he did say that they’ve been talking it, but he doesn’t know what they’re going to do at this point.

Aside from a few dialogue issues, Sherlock Holmes was a pretty entertaining film. The set-up for the sequel was genius and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Who do you think should replace Ritchie and direct Lobo?

It’s finally time for Guy Ritchie’s good ol’ English detective novel turned blockbuster, Sherlock Holmes to hit the screen with mega-stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. From deconstructing sight scenes to watching Watson and Holmes bickers like an old married couples, this is definitely the entertaining adventure that you’re all hoping it will be.

Let’s take a deeper look below…

The Players:

Director: Guy Ritchie

Actors: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Mark Strong, Rachel McAdams

Screenplay: Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham, and Simon Kinberg

Screen Story: Lionel Wigram and Michael Robert Johnson

Based off Characters by: Arthur Conan Doyle

Producers: Lionel Wigram, Joel Silver, Dan Lin, Susan Downey

Music: Hans Zimmer

The Good:

RDJ: You should already know what I’m going to say… he’s great. Fun to watch, attractive, clever, quick, overall, he’s the whole package. Technically he’s a bit too old, but he’s got enough tricks of his sleeve and boyish charm to help you forget.

First Act: Every moment of the first act is solid fun. The acting, the set design, the writing, the camera movements, everything is fast, to the point, and enjoyable to watch. Sadly, they don’t quite keep up the momentum throughout the rest of the film but they do, do a damn good job at trying.

Dialogue between Jude and Robert: Quick, witty, and harmoniously troublesome, much like a married couple at times — there were moments where it almost felt like we were watching a play or a great improv scene go perfectly right.

Simple Action: Although Ritchie uses the massive crane shots and extreme special effects, he does so sparingly. A large hammer vs. a small hammer used correctly is all you need to make a fight scene both interesting and funny. When he did use crazy special effects scenes, he didn’t drag them out. Often directors like to point our where they’ve spent their money, but Richie let them come and go quite naturally for the most part.

Very Richie: The fight scenes are text book Guy Richie. Some of you will love them, some of you won’t, but he stays true to what he knows and loves.

Bad:

Make-up: There was way too much for this time period. Maybe a bit of rouge on the checks and charcoal on the eyes, but not the full 2009 harlot look. McAdam’s is beautiful enough, she doesn’t need that much junk on her face and it takes away from the authenticity of the film.

Repetitive: Although they have a few good gags, they recycle them over and over again. Once you’ve seen the first 30 minutes you’ve seen it all, after that, you’ll just have to see the same tricks in slightly different ways.

Length: This is a common problem for me, but it was 15 minutes too long, mainly due to a few too many subplots that could have easily been cut.

Overall:

This film is well worth a trip to the theater if you’re looking for a fun ride that is easy to watch. It’s not perfect by any means, but if you’re looking to be entertained for a a few hours without having to think or feel too much, or if you need something to plop the family in front of during the Holiday, it’ll definitely do the trick.

Rating: 7.3/10

In theaters on Christmas Day!

One year later, after the press conference which launched the shooting of Sherlock Holmes, the cast and crew were back in the London’s Freemasons Hall to promote Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Joel Silver, Kelly Reilly, Mark Strong, Susan Downey, Dan Lin, Guy Ritchie, Lionel Wigram and Hans Zimmer attend the conference (sadly Rachel McAdams wasn’t able to make it), to explain how they were all introduced to Sherlock Holmes and what drew them to the project. Robert Downey Jr. was his typical wisecracking self, playing around with the audience and the cast and the crew, but everyone else was done in a rather typical “straight-laced must sell the film” mode.

Hope you enjoy.

Joel, what was it for you that attracted you to this project?

Silver: It’s a great movie. I think it potentially has franchise capabilities which is very good. I think Warners, we’ve mentioned this fellow, Jeff Robinov, the head of the studio, who actually is here today. It’s a worldwide press conference. Jeff, please stand up so we can… (applause) And sitting next to him is Sue Kroll, head of marketing. But I mean, I have to do that. But I think we have a chance at really having a lot of fun with this character, with this story. I think that you want to have a place to go with a movie. You want to have a place to start and it can continue past the end of the movie. I think we tried very hard to allow the audience to embrace the fact that there may be more of a story. I’m hopeful the audience loves it and enjoys it and we can continue our journey.

So what was your first intro to Sherlock Holmes?

Zimmer: I think pretty much, at the age of six, German translation, needless to say, when I started reading Sherlock Holmes. I certainly fell in love with it and carried on loving it all throughout my life.

Lin: For me, it was seeing young Sherlock Holmes in elementary school.

Wigram: For me, it was around about the age of eight or nine. My dad used to read them to me before I went to bed.

Reilly: I don’t remember exactly when it was but I just know that it was in my childhood. I can’t really put a finger on when.

Law: Mine was the TV series, the Jeremy Brett TV series.

Downey Jr: I’m the same as Kelly. On that point.

Ritchie: For me I was about six. They were the first stories I was familiar with actually. I knew them all extremely well. I knew them from school.

Strong: If you were a school boy growing up in England, he forces his way into your literary DNA. I think the first one I saw was, like Jude, Jeremy Brett.

Susan Downey: I saw Hounds of Baskerville and I’d read a couple of the short stories, but when this was percolating, I’m a very good student and I kind of locked myself away one weekend and read everything.

Silver: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, I remember those movies. They really had a lot of resonance for me and it was great to take what we saw and what we… I remember as those movies and bring to life today.

Guy, we’ve known you from smaller films. Why did you choose this one?

Ritchie: I chose it really because I needed the job. Aside from that, I wanted to go from small independent films and this seemed to be the perfect segway from something that was small, but I managed to hold onto an English identity but at the same time we had American muscle and American pockets. So it’s kind of been the perfect segway to me to have something that’s big and broad, but is essentially but with only American muscle.

Is there any more pressure because of that American muscle and those pockets?

Ritchie: You’ll have to ask me that in a few days once the film opens, but as yet it’s really the same, I think the same process is involved for a big film as it is for a small film. That may all change in a few days.

For the actors, what is required for the slow motion in terms of technique?

Downey Jr: (in corny accent) Am I expected to qualify this with an answer? (Back to normal voice) It’s a seven second take and so, if you notice, everything that happens that you never see in seven seconds you see in playback so I think it’s just about trying to do less.

There is a sense that because it is super slow motion there is no hiding.

Downey Jr: Yeah, often there’s not. Guy used to tell me, “Try one like you’ve just tasted like peanut butter,” and I thought that is the strangest direction I’ve ever gotten and it actually kind of worked.

Guy, is there an influence from Caballa in this movie and how was Israel for you?

Ritchie: Israel’s very nice.

If you can shorten that answer a bit…

Ritchie: (Laughs) Israel. No, if you come through the door of this building above the door it says Kaddish, Kaddish, Kaddish. So we actually derived most of our influence from esoteric schools from the Masons, loosely based on the Masons. But the Masons themselves are heavily steeped in Hebraic scripture so that’s really where we drew our inspiration.

Robert, Holmes has been an inspiration for many shows like House M.D. Are you a fan of that show. Also, were you scared about approaching this role?

Downey Jr: Scared. I don’t get scared anymore. I just get busy. I already knew by the time Guy was directing this that it was a fresh interpretation. And then, I’ve worked with Joel Silver a bunch, I’ve lived with Susan Downey a bunch. Lionel Wigram basically is the person who figured out how to reprise this as a film. So I knew I was in good hands and then it was just a matter of getting down to business. Fortunately I’d spent some time here in the late ‘80s playing Chaplin and I had a great tutelage in all things British from Lord Attenborough so I felt like I’d definitely passed go, but definitely felt the onus of, it’s not the fear of the judgment of others, at a certain point it just comes down to, will you meet the standards that people are expecting of you and you expect from them.

What about Hugh Laurie?

Downey Jr: Hugh Laurie. It’s nice. What did he say about Israel? No, no, that’s actually an interesting point. I like that guy.

Mark, the chance to play a nemesis in this must have been something you relished?

Strong: Yes, it was a… I’ve worked with Guy a few times, so it was great to come back and work with him. More importantly, I think the pressure was on to find a villain who was worthy of the greatest detective in the world. And I’m fascinated by the fact that, although everything else is cherry picked from the short stories and the novels, Blackwood isn’t and I think what that allowed the film to do was create whatever we wanted, which is even kind of more outlandish perhaps than anything you’d find in the novels. But he embodies Victorian and that whole kind of Imperial feel of showmanship that the Victorians are famous for.

Robert, can you talk about why you loved filming in Britain. And Jude, the locations you liked?

Downey Jr: Look, I was here 20 years ago and the food sucked. And I was not particularly happy. I was doing a movie called Air America. I renamed it Air Generica. And we were at Pinewood in these studios or whatever and then I came back and I did Chaplain. I think there’s something about the work ethic here. I think there’s something about the people and the culture. Obviously as Americans and I can speak for myself and Susan and Joel – there’s sometimes just a bit of an abrupt attitude that we have, like, “All right, we’re here, let’s get done with the work. Fuck what you’re going through. We’ll eat later.” And we were very shortly put in check that there’s a more civilized way to operate and that’s it nice to put out a little cheese, let’s talk, let’s be grown-ups about this. It is tea time. It’s tea time right now. See you later. (Laughs) And by the way, we’re not vulgar or anything, it’s just very much a part of the furniture here. And I think it was just, for me anyways, just a huge experience in the proper way to do things. I’ve taken it forth ever since.

Law: I don’t remember my part of the question.

Shooting in U.K.

Law: Oh yeah, well the production design did an amazing job embellishing what was already pretty historic sites.

Downey Jr: Sarah Greenwood.

Law: Beautiful. We’d turn up every day and they’d been there two days dressing and laying in stuff as far as the eye could see. The detail was exquisite. But it’s always fun to be out and about in film rather than in the studio. That goes back to what Joel said. This was a film very much taking Holmes… The kernel of the story’s a domestic drama if you like and you see them still delving and unpicking cases on a cerebral level, but also they’re out and about getting their boots dirty and their knuckles sore. It was fun work in the U.K. It’s always fun working in the U.K. I love coming home, making films here.

Susan, the guys have talked about the atmosphere on set created by Mr. Ritchie. Tell us about that.

Susan Downey: Well, it’s really interesting because it’s by far the most relaxed set I’ve ever worked on. I think I can speak for Robert, at least on that. And what I came to realize pretty quickly was that it was completely by design. And Guy, it’s very important to him, that essentially he’s running the show, sort of orchestrating what’s going on. But he wants everybody to sort of feel excited to come to work and excited to bring their best and bring their new ideas. And as a result he creates a very collaborative environment and what it resulted for us was this desire to always bring new ideas to the days work or what was upcoming. We spent a lot of time together. A lot of times on a movie set at lunch, everybody disappears. Producers go off and have meetings or you watch dailies or the actors go take a rest of something. We all would get together at lunch in a trailer and sort of spend half the time making each other laugh and the other half working on either that afternoon’s work or something that was upcoming. It worked out really well. I think Guy improved his guitar. I think if we played some EPK stuff from the beginning of the shoot and then at the end we’d see how well he did. But then you’d go by and suddenly everybody else had the guitar in their hand. It was just that kind of family, collaborative environment and it made for a lot of fun.

Presumably this was an artistic decision to go onto this scale. Are we going to lose you to Hollywood or will you still make small films?

Ritchie: I don’t know is the answer to that. I really sort of, I make the films that I want to make. The interesting thing about this experience was that it wasn’t the cliche experience between filmmaker and studio. You know, I argued for the studio. I wanted to make an accessible, broad, what they call a four quadrant movie. What they wanted was Guy Ritchie-isms, so to speak. I argued for the studio and the studio argued for me. It was like two people trying to get to the bar and the other one was trying to insist they should pay. So all the arguments between the studio and myself are coming from a positive place. I think studios have changed with their approach towards filmmakers. They want, and I’ve certainly found this with Warner Bros. and Jeff Robinov, who really does seem to support a filmmaker’s vision. So I had a tremendously positive experience from beginning to end. I had no negative arguments. There was no us and them, which I had anticipated and I’d heard was inevitable. That just didn’t happen.

What were the most challenging aspects of recreating Victorian London. Also Guy, there’s a cheeky nod to your own pub in the film. Did you invite everyone for a lock-in during the shoot?

Ritchie: Wouldn’t know about lock-ins. I think [the first question] is really a question for Sarah Greenwood, but I certainly had no complains, which I usually do. I’m used to having a hammer and nail myself in all the films that I’ve done before while I sort of knock things up. It was a relief to come to work and have these great cities built. They managed to manifest something that felt so authentic to me. Although we shot almost entirely on location. It was inspiring to see what it was the production department could manifest. So you’d have to really ask them about that. I just loved everything that they gave us to offer.

Guy, can you talk about the reshoots. Also, why such an attractive Watson.

Ritchie: Was the first question about reshoot. We always left, in every film I’ve ever done, I always leave a contingency week for reshoots because you never know what’s going to surface during the editing process. So we always leave a week and we left a week in this one. But if you look at the, am I happy with the result? Yes, it’s the film that we all intended to make. But if you look at, on the DVD, there are no deleted scenes either, which is rather disappointing for those that like deleted scenes. But there was absolutely no fat on this. Pretty much what we started with was what we ended up with.

And what about Watson?

Ritchie: Oh yes. It’s been coined the Hotson versus Potson scenario. What we wanted, we really wanted a good looking Watson and then in the tabloids it got coined Hotson. And this was because I’d always seen their relationship as much more of an equal partnership, more like Butch and Sundance, than I had seen it as this kind of bumbling Potson. So I just thought that was fair to Conan Doyle and also Lionel and I agreed on that. Lionel and I were always in agreement with how we thought this partnership should be portrayed.

Jude, are you in love again? Robert, have you ever been tied to a bed?

Law: The only person I’m in love with at the moment is here on my left (talking about Downey).

Downey Jr: Where are you? (looking for journalist) I want to look in your fucking eyes. There we go. You’d like to know if I’ve been involved in sadomasochistic activities, sexually? I’ll answer answer this if you meet me in the bathroom with a little mask on. Bring your rubber mask and I’ll tell you.

Kelly, how did you cope trying to play the character with these two behaving like this?

Reilly: It was very difficult. Hell. No, I think Watson should have warned Mary before they go for dinner. I think he should have said he may be a bit tricky with you.

Law: How satisfying was it throwing that glass of wine, though?

Reilly: It was my first day on the first week of filming. I was terrified.

Downey Jr: You’d probably rather have done it closer to the end of the shoot?

Reilly: Yeah. (Laughs)

How many times did you have to do it?

Reilly: Oh, I can’t remember.

You didn’t do it the first time?

Reilly: No, I think I missed first time. But yeah, three or four. But I think what’s nice about Mary is that she’s the woman behind the already good man and the fact that she can actually have a place in that relationship that isn’t the woman that wants him to stay at home. She does love him as much as Holmes does and wants him to go and continue his adventures, but unfortunately you didn’t see it like that.

Robert, you mentioned that the food sucked in the U.K. 20 years ago. Was there anything you liked? Also, Guy didn’t have a lock-in, so have you been to the Punch Bowl?

Downey Jr: First of all, I kind of sucked 20 years ago. Far be it from me to say what was good and where. I barely remember any of it. But there’s a ton of good restaurants. As a matter of fact, I think we should just stop the press conference now and start passing around notes. I believe Automat is quite the spot right now.

During the Sherlock Holmes Press Conference in London, it was inevitable for a question to be asked about the possible return of Sherlock Holmes’s arch nemeses, Lord Moriarty, for the next installment of the Sherlock Holmes franchise.

When Joel Silver was asked “Will Moriarty be at the centre of things in the possible next installment?” he was very coy in his response….

“The question haven’t been answered yet, so we have left that up to ourselves to answer, so there is no real response to that question”

Then, Robert Downey Jr. added in his usual charming and yet smart-ass manner:

“Suffice to say, I have casting approval.”

This certainly coincides with rumors circling around about Brad Pitt being asked to play the role of Lord Moriarty by Robert Downey Jr. himself. In the film itself, there are plenty of question left unanswered for the impending sequel, which depends on the success of this film.

Personally, if they are looking for an actor to play Lord Moriarty, it should have been Mark Strong, but since he was already the main villain, Lord Blackwood, in Sherlock Holmes, I doubt they’ll be able to have he come back.

At the moment, Guy Ritchie isn’t signed up to do another Sherlock Holmes as he is signed on to do an adaptation of Lobo, again with Silver and with Warner Brothers. But he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of making another Sherlock Holmes film himself. So it all hinges on how much money this film is able to pull in.

Would Lord Moriarty make a good villain in the second Sherlock Holmes film? If so, who do you think should play him?

A while back there were so many rumors about Brad Pitt appearing in the Guy Ritchie adaption of Sherlock Holmes. The role in question was of Moriarty, a well known villain in the Holmes book series. The rumor was quickly debunked by Warner Bros, but now it’s starting to rear its ugly head once again. This time, speculation has Pitt appearing in the sequel to the upcoming film that hasn’t even hit theaters yet.

From what we’ve heard, Moriarty does make a brief appearance in the first film possibly as a set up for the sequel. According to THR, three months before Sherlock‘s theatrical release, Warner Bros has already hired Kieran and Michele Mulroney to write a screenplay for the follow up feature. Previously the duo was linked to the WB tentpole project Justice League: Mortal, which looks like it will be placed on the back burner indefinitely.

Back to Pitt and Moriarty. Those who have been on set and are close to the project say the character’s appearance is “in shadow and cannot be recognized.” What is this? Are we pulling a Batman Begins where you allude to the villain without ever seeing their face? Don’t get me wrong, it worked for the film but they’re saying that a person will be seen not an object of reference. That’s not as easy to pull off. If the person who plays Moriarty in the cameo doesn’t reprise the role for the sequel, I will be highly pissed. I don’t care who the actor is, whenever that happens it never works.

What do you think about a Sherlock sequel already being in development? Should Pitt play Moriarty?

Here’s a random film and director pairing for you. According to Variety, Guy Ritchie is set to helm a live action adaptation of the DC Comics property, Lobo. The feature will be the next gig for the the director after his stint on the upcoming release, Sherlock Holmes. What in the world does Mr. Ritchie have planned for this comic book anti-hero?

Guy Ritchie will expand on his relationship with Warner Bros, who also produced Sherlock Holmes, by taking on Lobo, an alien interstellar bounty hunter, and overall nut job. The film is set to be an action drama, which will allow it to fall in line with the studio’s other Gothic themed releases such as The Dark Knight.

“Lobo originated in 1983 in “Omega Men,” written by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen. Lobo has had several comic incarnations. In the film, he is a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenaged girl to stop the creatures.”

The production on the film is set to begin early next year, but there’s no word as to who will star as the title character. Sources are saying that the film will be laced with heavy visual effects, but is aiming for a PG-13 rating. So, it will be graphic but not Watchmen graphic.

I’ve noticed that everyone is jumping on the comic book directing bandwagon. Some of the most unexpected people are taking on these types of projects. I wonder how he plans on visually creating this character, because in my mind he looks like a pale, beast. Also, thanks to my avid viewership of Justice League Unlimited I only hear Brad Garrett’s voice whenever Lobos name is mentioned. Thanks a lot Cartoon Network!

Do you think Ritchie has what it takes to bring Lobo to the big screen?

The rumors are never ending when it comes to the remake of Guys and Dolls. According to The Sun, Guy Ritchie wants to make his own version of the musical and rumor has it (and it’s a big rumor) that he already have some stories in mind for the roles: Jason Statham and Justin Timberlake.

“I can’t tell you what is happening, but I can tell you what is not happening, and that is this Guy Ritchie version,” said Allen H. Arrow, the attorney for the estate of Frank Loesssner, who wrote the music and lyrics for Guys and Dolls.

However, Hugh Jackman may be the man for the job. According to Variety, Arrow said that this Jackman version might hit the target:

“We are not opposed to that development. This musical survived even the recent Broadway revival, and as bad as that was, they couldn’t kill it. If the terms are proper in the scenario you described, that could happen.”

The story about Time Square gamblers and hoods was first staged on Broadway in 1950 with Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra. Remaking Guys and Dolls should be carefully planned because it could either be a total disaster or genius.

If Hugh Jackman was placed at the helm of this project, it would certainly stand a chance. For people like me, who long to hear Adelaide’s Lament sung on the big screen, hopefully this Jackman story turns out to be true and not just another rumor.

What do you think of a Guys and Dolls remake?
