New DVD Releases: Green Zone, She’s Out of My League, The Last Station

A pretty solid week on DVD as many of the better February releases are rolling onto disc along with the last major Oscar holdover in The Last Station. A solid week all around on the movie front.

TV on DVD is surprisingly dry this week, with just a couple of series launching on disc. Despite this, we do get a chance to catch up on two middling HBO series. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

Green Zone

Here’s the thing about hype. It’s never, never quite there. It never quite goes where you think it’s going.

Consider this film. Oscar prognosticators (y’know, like me) had this pegged as a multiple nominee last April. What with Paul Greengrass directing, Matt Damon starting and a supporting pedigree including Amy Ryan and Brendan Gleeson – it seemed like a can’t miss. Throw that all together with a setting like the Iraq war and it was a surefire Best Picture nominee.

Then, it got pushed back. Again and again and again. Suddenly, it was just a good action flick. A solid shaky-cam trip through implausibility that worked as a fun ride.

Meanwhile, a movie nobody had even heard of at the start of the year (The Hurt Locker) went on to the awards sweep everyone had predicted for Green Zone.

So it would seem the theory was right, but the movie was wrong.

Either way, you can check this out on DVD.

“Entourage”: Season 6 & “Hung”: Season 1

There is a growing trend in television comedy and it’s one that seems very counterproductive, actually oxymoronic. It’s that they aren’t funny anymore.

And it’s not that they’re littered with bad jokes – it’s that they don’t even try to be funny.

Look at the two seasons of these series. Point out to me, let me in on one joke from either of these series. I plowed through every episode and couldn’t find one. Sure, they can be amusing, entertaining and a half-hour long but how exactly are these comedies.

The trend seems to be a half-hour drama, which is something of a cop out. It’s like admitting defeat in two departments: We can’t be funny and we can’t tell a story that carries one hour.

That, however, might be your thing. And if it is you can grab “Hung” Season 1 and “Entourage” Season 6 on DVD.

Movie Releases: She’s Out of My League, Remember Me, Green Zone

It seems as though every genre is covered this week with new movies coming out. If you are looking for action, you should check out Paul Greengrass’s film Green Zone starring Matt Damon as a U.S. Army officer who goes rogue as he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in an unstable region. Looking for drama? You can go the romantic route and watch Remember Me starring Twilight’s very own hunk Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin. Or you can go the murder mystery route and watch Joon-Ho Bang’s crime thriller, Mother about a mother who will stop at nothing to prove her handicap son did not rape or murder the woman for which he is accused.

If you’re looking for a good laugh, we got two good comedies for you this week. In Jim Field Smith’s movie She’s Out of My League, you watch as faith brings the perfect woman (Alice Eve) into the life of the not-so-popular guy (Jay Baruchel). Definitely a laugh out loud film about nothing important but entertaining nevertheless. Another comedy to choose from is Our Family Wedding starring America Ferrera and Lance Gross. Although the film seems like it is filled with stereotypes, it never goes too far. You will laugh, just not all the time.

Green Zone: Movie Review

I have one thing to say to you people out there… “Get your game face on.” If that one line doesn’t epitomize this movie I don’t know what does. Sure it’s a political thriller, but lets get down to it, this is no Syriana, this is an action film, and even more to the point it’s a Bourne film with a lead that has no special fighting powers and a bit of a political edge.

Lets not get too deep with this one, lets do what the film needed to do, get to the point and get out…

The Players:

Director: Paul Greengrass
Writer: Brian Helgeland (screenplay) and Rajiv Chandrasekaran (book)
Actors: Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Jason Isaacs, Brendan Gleeson and Amy Ryan
Music: John Powell
Cinematography: Barry Ackroyd

The Good:

Greg Kinnear: Such a charming bad guy. He’s great to have on screen and always brings something interesting and unexpected even to the most obvious characters.
Matt Damon: This is no Oscar-worthy performance, but he does a good job. He sells the cheesy lines admirably and overall holds the film together.
Politics: The political message in the film is a bit surface level but I did do a good job at showing that there are multiple perspectives in war, that there are good and bad guys on both sides of the line, the government is out for their own interests, and Bush is an idiot – that I definitely liked!

The Bad:

The Shaky Cam: I get that the shaky camera gives the film a more “authentic” feel, but there’s got to be a line drawn somewhere. There was so much of it that it felt like they were intentionally trying to distract me from ever seeing what was going on in the scene. Sometimes it’s nice to just watch a movie instead of being a part of it.
The Runtime: At 115 minutes the film lags. After 90 minutes of “go team” action packed, shoot um up violence the film’s pace never changes and it starts to melt the mind. Although they filled the 115 minutes, it could have been cut and even more condensed.

Overall:

There are times when Green Zone is a fun ride and it does have a good message, but for a number of reasons it just didn’t “wow” me. Both Greengrass and Damon are more than capable of doing so and although this was a good film, it was just that.

Rating: 6.75/10

6 New Green Zone Clips – Get Your Game Face On

We just got six new clips for Paul Greengrass’ film, Green Zone starring Matt Damon as a slightly more realistic version of his Jason Bourne character… but not that much more realistic. Once again he’s a military agent with the special ability to out smart the people he works for and kick their asses when necessary. Luckily these clips do show that there is a bit of difference between Green Zone and the Bourne series. For one, Damon’s character Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller feels a bit more “all-American” than Jason Bourne and he says things like “get your game face on.”

Overall, this could be a fun ride or it could be another run-of-the-mill war films. It’s unclear how intelligent the actual plot line is and if this is something that Greengrass and Damon were passionate about doing, or if it’s just a big, shoot um up payday. Hopefully it’s not the latter.

The film co-stars Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla and Jason Isaacs all of which you can see in the clips below. The film’s story takes place during the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, where Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert.

Matt Damon’s Green Zone Featurette

A new featurette has been released for the latest Paul Greengrass film, Green Zone. It’s a collaborative effort with Jason Bourne star Matt Damon, which is interesting considering the similarities between the two films. It’s very much a spy thriller, it’s just cloaked with more military jargon than the other films. The featurette does show plenty of new footage, which is a plus because at this point we need to know what makes this movie unique.

Besides Damon, the rest of the Green Zone cast includes Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla and Jason Isaacs. The film’s story takes place during the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, where Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. While doing their routine duties they stumble upon a huge military cover up that changes their mission and conflicts with everything they believe in.

Miller will be the man of the hour when it comes to finding out the truth and fighting off the bad guys, a scenario we’ve seen Damon in before. Perhaps one day we’ll be able to find a way for this film to remove itself from the shadow of that other illusive spy franchise.

Matt Damon’s Green Zone Poster

We’ve already established that Paul Greengrass’ upcoming reunion project with Matt Damon screams Jason Bourne, so it’s no surprise that on the poster for the Green Zone, Bourne is the main attraction. The font size for the title Green Zone may be a little bigger but who are they kidding, this is a Jason Bourne poster through and through.

Take a look for yourself…

The very first thing noted on this poster are the words “From the director of The Bourne Supremacy & The Bourne Ultimatum,” which is then followed by Matt Damon in large letters. Now, if you were just going off the huge stressed out photo of Damon along with those words you’d probably think, ‘Bourne 4?’

If that wasn’t enough, the tagline is “Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller is done following orders.” Isn’t that what Jason Bourne decided to do? He went all rogue because he couldn’t find the answers he was looking for when he lost his memory. After we showed you the international and domestic trailer for the film, plenty of you also noted the similarities between the movies, and this poster just cements it.

International Green Zone Trailer

Just yesterday, we brought you the domestic trailer for the latest Paul Greengrass thriller entitled, Green Zone, and now over at MSNBC, they’ve debuted the international cut of the trailer. No matter how you slice it, if it looks like Jason Bourne, sounds like Jason Bourne, and shoots like Jason Bourne… you know the rest.

Green Zone is an action-centric war drama that has Matt Damon once again leading the way under Greengrass’s direction. The rest of the cast includes Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla and Jason Isaacs. I wish I could say that the Bourne theme of this film is a turn off, but I can’t. I love that series, and I think it’s one of the best in it’s genre.

Another plus is Brendan Gleeson, he’s a very talented actor and I like seeing him going toe to toe with other strong actors. Darn you Paul for forcing me to even give this movie a second glance! Green Zone is scheduled to hit theaters on March 12, 2010.

Green Zone First Trailer and Photos

Maybe I missed something, but this is the first I’ve heard of Green Zone. Matt Damon has teamed up again with Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass in an action packed war thriller, about “a rogue U.S. Army officer who must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil before war escalates in an unstable region.” The film has a strong supporting cast including Greg Kinnear, Brendan Gleeson, Amy Ryan, Khalid Abdalla and Jason Isaacs.

You would have thought that we would have heard more about this by now. Oh well! It’s here now with a bang. Check out the first action packed trailer and some stills from the film below…

Anyone else feel like they just watched a trailer for another Bourne film with a new twist? Luckily Bourne is a great series and Matt Damon is once of the easiest men in the world to watch on screen so the film definitely has some potential.

It will be interesting to see if this is a straight out action film or a war film with some purpose behind it. This trailer makes it look action-flick, but there is an opportunity for some depth. Damon is one to support a political cause so it’s easy to see why he might get behind a war-thriller. Then again, he’s done a number of flat out shoot um up films, so it might just be that. Where will this one fall? It’s hard to tell just yet.
