WB Says They’re Prepping Green Lantern 2

After two weekends, Green Lantern has made a little less than $90 Million at the box office – which is low for a film that supposedly cost $200 Million (with a supposed additional $100 for advertising). And yet Warner Brothers suggested this weekend that they’re going forward with a sequel. At least that’s what The Hollywood Reporter is suggesting. Will Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively get a second chance?

The film is considered something of an underperformer internationally, but all the numbers aren’t in yet. Still, its domestic box office fell hard this weekend, and the final American total should be less than $140, especially with direct competition this week from Transformers 3. Why then announce a sequel?

Two reasons: one is that it makes the current film look better, and we’ve seen some movies that didn’t do that awesome spawn a sequel if bad word from other entries in the franchise diminished current interest (that was the autopsy on Batman Begins numbers). Perhaps the world was too funky for regular movie goers to check it out theatrically, but once it hits home video there may be more interest in checking the film out. Lantern was not well received critically, with most reviews skewing negative (our review was mixed). But this may also have to do with “origin story” movie fatigue (Lantern is the third such film this summer, with another on the way).

The second reason is that the Green Lantern is a brand that needs more name recognition. The character isn’t as well known as Superman or Batman, and for regular viewers it may take some getting to know. But if they do another, how do they do it cheaper? If this film had a problem it’s that it didn’t do more with the outer space and fantasy elements. The universe of this character is not cheap, and going cheaper would be a greater disservice.So how do you do this universe on a budget? At the same time, Superhero movies – even if they are on the wane – are easier to sell than original properties. You’re already starting with a base awareness. If this didn’t work, you can say you learned from your mistakes.

All that said, Warner Brothers talked up a sequel to Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns while that film was flailing at the box office, and now they’re going with a second reboot of that franchise. Saying your doing something – or even throwing money at a script – is much, much cheaper than actually making a movie.

Box Office Predictions: Cars 2 To Crash Into No. 1 Spot.

After last weekends disappointing debut, Green Lantern looks to fend off new comers Bad Teacher and The Disney Sequel in Cars 2. From Toy Story to Up Pixar is known for having the golden touch when it comes to producing movies that produce box office gold. While Cars was a solid performer it was a tad bit below in box office tallies when compared previous Pixar films. The lack of a solid family films over the past few weeks and an onslaught of marketing should help propel Cars 2 to the finish in the # 1 spot.

After a lower then expected debut last weekend, Green Lantern hopes to show some legs this weekend at the box office. Unfortunately that is highly unlikely as the film received modest cinenascore grades, a disturbing friday-Saturday daily box office drop, and mediocre weekday talies. Look for the Green Lantern to take a tumble in it’s seciond weekend to come in at the # 2 spot.

Looking like the sequel to Bad Santa, comes Bad Teacher starring Cameron Diaz, Jason Segal, and Justin Timberlake. Timing is good as it has been a few weeks since The Hangover 2 and Bridesmaids opened and movie goers could certainly use a fresh new comedy in the movie going mix. Look for Bad Teacher to open in the range of another Diaz vehicle What Happened In Vegas (which grossed $20,172,474 opening weekend) as both films had some some star power Vegas with Diaz. Reviews have been ok at best, but that shouldn’t deter fans from heading to the theatres this weekend. Look for Bad Teacher land in the #3 spot this weekend.

Rounding out the top will be Super 8 which had a solid last weekend to the number #4 spot while Mr.Poppers Penguins which should face some stiff competition from Cars 2 to drop to # 5.

Weekend Box Office: Green Lantern Makes a Weak Debut for a Superhero Movie

Out of all of the superhero/comic-book movies that have come out this summer, Green Lantern‘s debut has been the weakest. All three films Thor (opened to $66 million), X-Men: First Class (opened to $56 million) and now, Green Lantern placed at No. 1 during their opening weekend, but not each one seems to be making less than the last. Even with the extra boost in 3D ticket sales, Green Lantern wasn’t able to top its predecessors. Last weekend’s big attraction Super 8 slipped to second place, grossing $21.2 million. And Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the new Jim Carrey family comedy, came in at No. 3 with $18.2 million. Find out more below…

Being summer and all, it’s no surprise that our top ten list is packed with huge studio movies. Most of the films seen here have gigantic budgets, and even though they aren’t No. 1 (anymore), they are still bringing in big piles of money. The Hangover Part II, for example, has a total gross of over $232.6 million, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides passed the $220 million mark this weekend. The Johnny Depp movie is closer and closer to surpassing its own huge budget of $250 million.

Green Lantern: Movie Review

After all the hype and build up, it’s finally time for Green Lantern to take a swing at the box office this weekend and show us what it’s got! This has been a film long time coming, one we’ve seen bits of since last year’s Comic-Con. Now it’s finally time for Ryan Reynolds to appear in his skin tight CGI spandex, spewing witty lines. The film is not perfect, and at times it feels extremely over-worked, but there are a number of good performances and enough entertaining moments that make it worth a journey to the theater. Though I would recommend saving yourself a couple of bucks and seeing it in 2D instead of 3D, you won’t miss out on anything. Find out more below…

The Plot:

Hal Jordan is a bad-ass test pilot with a whole lot of issues when one day a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers. Soon he is given all the powers he can imagine, and is asked to help keep the peace within the universe and save planet earth.

The Good:

Peter Sarsgaard: Sarsgaard steals almost every scene he’s in during the film (and not just because his skull takes up most of the screen) and most of the laughs. He brought a real sense of depth to the character and wasn’t afraid to play with it. He’s really the highlight of the film.
The Final Act: Though the film gets off to a slow start (see “The Bad”), the final act really picks up and finally we see the potential that we all knew Ryan Reynolds had, paying off. In the last 35 minutes they’re somehow able to recapture the tension and drama that’s needed for us to be invested in the film. Once they’re able to finally get to the actual film, they sore and it’s really a fun ride.
The Special Effects on Earth: For me, the special effects on earth were much more convincing than the ones on Mogo and in outer-space. The suit and the action sequences were much more grounded than they were in outer space (pun intended). Though the visual effects on Mogo and in space were impressive at times, it still felt like lots of green splashes of goo everywhere and like we were looking at a CGI world. I always prefer the realistic type of effects and I was far more impressed by the creativity they were able to bring to earth.

The So-So:

Ryan Reynolds: He shows such potential in this film at times that I hate to call him “so-s0″ but because of some poor editing choices or problems in the script, his innate humor was never given the chance to breathe nor strike a cord with the audience. He’s able to tackle the more challenging dramatic scenes quite well, it’s the humorous ones that just didn’t quite hit home — since we know he’s better than that, I’m going to assume it was a story or post-production issue, and not him. And if they’re able to keep up the pace of the last act, I’d happily go to see him in another Green Lantern film.
The Editing: As I spoke about with the timing of Ryan Reynolds humor, it felt like there was something off with the editing. In attempting to speed up the first act, they didn’t allow for the natural comedy that Reynolds is capable of and sped past all the entertaining bits to get to more exposition. THOUGH, one of the big things that brought the film back for me in the second act was the interesting cuts between Hal and Hector both changing. It’s hard to say is that was the editing, the writing or a combination of the two, but it was extremely well done.

The Bad:

The First Act: From bad editing, to music that sounded unfinished, to a plethora of plot-lines not properly being tied together, the first act of this film is slow and uninteresting. They needed to either slow down and explain the origins of the story or skip past some of the explanation. They begin the film somewhere in the middle and you get both too much and not enough at the same time.
The Music: I hate saying this, but it felt like an unfinished score. Howard is a great composer, one who has blown us away time and time again. I’m not sure if we heard pieces of the temp score because we screened the film early, or if they cut the film after they scored it and did not allow Howard to adjust the music to the new cuts, but something was definitely off. There are scenes where they just allow the music to drop out and others where the timing is off. Something tells me Howard is not happy right now because he’s better than this.

Overall:

Again, the film started out with both too much and too little, and needed to decide what it was and ground itself. Luckily, they were somehow able to get it back, set the tone and end the film with a bang. It’s not a perfect film and you can easily skip the 3D, but it was easy to watch and Sarsgaard’s performance and Reynolds charisma is enough to make it worth a trip to the theaters,

1-1 Interview: Peter Sarsgaard for Green Lantern on Playing Evil

This weekend in theaters, Ryan Reynolds puts on the green spandex and becomes Hal Jordan in Green Lantern. Though he’s charming as always, it’s Peter Sarsgaard‘s performance as Hector Hammond, the anti-charmer who not only steals many of the scene, but also many of Reynolds laughs. As with any film, a film is only as strong as its villain, and what makes this film worth watching is Sarsgaard’s performance which is both dramatic and insanely fun.

I had a chance to site down with Sarsgaard and talk to him one on one about bringing this role to life, playing “interesting” characters, adding in those delectable character moments that make the role so much fun and overcoming his fear of acting…

What is it about playing ugly that appeals to you?

Peter Sarsgaard: I’m not particularly drawn to it. Are you telling me I’m better looking than some of the characters that I’ve played? [laughs]

You’re definitely much better looking than this character.

PS: Well I don’t believe in absolute purity, right? I really don’t. I don’t think it exist. I think people who seem that way are pretending. I am drawn to characters that have a side that is ugly that is portrayed in the movie that is dark. It’s important that the characters lies, a lot of people lie. Or does something dishonest at some point, or does something wrong in some way. That’s so rare and it’s especially rare with the heroes in the movies, the characters that are portrayed as beautiful. It’s almost non-existent. They are totally scrubbed clean most of the time and any fault that they have is a little wink, ‘oh he drinks a tiny bit too much.’ That just doesn’t interest me.

Is that more appealing for you to be able to play the character that’s faulted but it trying to do good, than the good guy who keeps messing up?

PS: Well you get more room. Nobody cares. The people making the movie certainly do not care if the valid is a little bit more sympathetic. We like sympathetic villains. Some of the most successful villains in the history of cinema have been ones that people wanted to be or enjoyed watching or had a sense of humor.

How about the wonderful choice that you added to smell Blake Lively?

PS: She smelled really good.

Oh I’m sure she did…

PS: I was doing what every other man in the audience was wanting me to do.

Exactly. I always say that a film is only as strong as its villain, and I think that you made this film quite strong mainly because of the details you added to your character such as smelling or sipping your drink like a 14-year-old girl. Do you feel like you have that freedom to actually be able to play on sets like that?

PS: I did tons of things like that. That’s the thing also about playing this character, versus playing – Even Ryan Reynolds character, a lot more people have a lot more invested in what he’s doing. Martin Campbell just gave me absolute freedom. I didn’t do that every take. The thing that kept me alive was knowing that I fourteen always. Fourteen-year-old doesn’t have a strong sense of identity usually, especially one that has no parents like mine, so can be anything at any given time. A fourteen-year-old usually has a very unusual way of dealing with the world, like sipping a drink like that. That’s what drove me through the entire movie. That’s probably the thing that kept me alive and enjoying myself doing the movie.

You got the biggest laughs in the house. Which is funny because Ryan Reynolds who is known for bringing the laughs. It feels like you don’t always make the safe choice and those moments really paid off.

PS: I make some absolutely absurd choices. I mean, I figured he would do that to begin with to just clear the air –

…And they stuck?

PS: Yeah, some of the stuck. I definitely would come out of the gate just swinging. I use to yell “mother fucker” before a lot of the takes, and this is when I was doing Boys Don’t Cry. I think it was sort of for the same reasons, and I wouldn’t explain to anyone. After I had already done something kind of weird, then anything else I did was going to seem acceptable. I’m not a natural bright performer from growing up.

Really?

PS: I always dreaded standing up in front of the classroom and doing anything. I remember I had to do a speech from Caesar, and I was just petrified. I hated doing anything like that. For me, the process of acting has always been about trying to create a place where I feel comfortable acting. That’s my first job. Once I do that, it’s weird, I am a performer.

What gives you the ability? Is it just experience of is it a trick that you learn? What is it that allows you to be in front of a camera, be in front of an entire crew, have all this pressure on you and then just play?

PS: I think it comes from the fact that I am a scared performer.

That’s a little bit reversal.

PS: A lot of actors where it comes naturally, you know, and are natural performers, so often in their everyday lives, that they becalmed inured to their own perforce. They tell the same joke over and over again, in different ways and they are use to titillating people and being the center of attention in one way or another. When they go to actually do it, they are not alone. They don’t have the ability to be alone in a moment. They are just entertaining people all the time. In order to be alone in that moment I spend a lot of time conquering my fear of creating this little dime size space on the dance floor that is all mine. And once I get in there, I’m so much energy from being so nervous that I just go straight at the other actor and I zero in on them because I can’t spread my energy to the crew and everyone else and be the center of attention because it makes me feels uncomfortable.

Does it make you feel good though? Because you said you brought down the house, so when you have those moments…

PS: It made me feel good. I think what ended up happening is something similar to what happens to the character is I started to come out as the character and experience this kind of blossoming that happens to him and people started reacting. I started being like someone who was performing for the first time in that way. I had an experience, an actual experience and I would do, like when I did that sip and they called cut, I felt everybody react. It was like being a kid. Everybody is reacting for the first time. No one in my house ever reacted like that, I was an only child. I was outside playing by myself. No one in Dr. Hector Hammond’s life ever went like, ‘Oh wow.’

So, in a way, you’re kind of similar to Hector?

PS: I am similar to him, in that way.

Hopefully you won’t go crazy.

PS: Hopefully not!

Or evil won’t take over your body.

PS: Or dead aliens won’t show up and you know…

When you get yourself into that tiny little bubble, does it matter what others around you are doing?

PS: I try to bring them in. Well, the trying to bring them in into your point of view to convince them even if you are not successful and they stand in their own little wold and you never connect, the act of trying is doing is acting is what it is. Period. So you could be acting with the crappiest actor in the world, who is just like not paying attention to you, well that’s just a huge obstacle to me. It just makes me go like, ‘hey, hey, hey, hey.’ I have so much terror and energy that I’m like, you have to listen to me.

What happens when they put everything on you? Does it ever shock you?

PS: Yeah. I love that. When an actor comes right back at you, and gives you what you want or something different, or whatever it is. It’s like acting with my wife [Maggie Gyllenhaal]. I’ve done two plays with my wife and we were just, that’s the most alive I’ve ever been acting because it was being in a pinball machine. You’re just, you think you’re going that way and then you get slammed this way and then you come back and she’s the absolute best actor I know.

That’s so beautiful. I love that.

PS: That’s just the truth. I really do have everything I want. It’s interesting because I get the feeling, when people interview me, that they think I don’t have everything that I want. That there’s this idea that I should want more or I should want something different as an actor. In my life, acting, even just my career, I’ve had the opportunity to do everything I want. Not all of it has been made into a movie, some of them have been on stage but a lot of them have been movies that nobody saw. That’s okay too.

That happens.

PS: That happens too, but I make a very good living.

I think you have a phenomenal career. One that is definitely worth admiration.

PS: That’s funny. Someone was interviewing me going, ‘It must like kill you with envy to watch like, Ryan play–” and I’m like, ‘that’s not me.’ Can you imagine me playing that role? It would be fucking crazy.

New Green Lantern Trailer – Que the Green Special Effects!

Well, well, well. It’s about time that we got the new trailer for The Green Lantern with a more intense look at the characters, more special effects, and more, more. After watching this trailer, it’s obvious that this film will be relying heavily of special effects, so much so that I’m not sure how much acting Ryan Reynolds will be able to do — though I’m sure if given the chance to charm or entertain he won’t fail to do so, but will he be given enough of the opportunity to make the film worthwhile?

Director Martin Campbell, who is most well known for his work in Casino Royale helms the project. We know that he’s able to deal with big budgets and yet still be respectful and true to a story from his Bond film, but to me this trailer just looks like a special effects reel with lots of over the top, vamped up characters. Hopefully this is just one of those trailers to get the visual effects crowd into the theaters and not a true representation of the film.

Hopefully Campbell is capable of handling the folklore of the Green Lantern Corps and the awe and wonder of the world while still keeping the story and character in place. There do seem to be a lot of baddies in the film, hopefully it all comes together.

I’ll say one thing, I’m curious! The cast is more than impressive, there are a lot of talented people who got together to make the film, the story has potential and there seems to be some interesting aspects to it.

The film is currently scheduled for release in 3D and 2D on June 17, 2011.

Full Body Shots of Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern

When The Green Lantern was announced, it was also made public that star Ryan Reynolds would not be wearing a suit on set, but that the costume would be added later in CGI. So for every trailer and footage so far we’ve gotten a rough idea of how it’s supposed to look, but it’s hard to know if the trailers presented finished effects shots. Well, the film is due out June 17, so now we’re going to get the full body shots. Breaking News USA got the first images, and we present them here. Take a look…

It’s good to see that Warner Brothers has either course-corrected or fully engaged in their marketing campaign with this film. We’re a little more than two months away from the film hitting theaters, and now’s the time to get people excited. These are action stills but done in a comic book style.

Between this and the recent footage presentation at WonderCon, The Green Lantern is starting to look a lot more confident than it seemed a couple months back when all we had was a trailer that came across as an Iron Man clone. Now that the marketing has embraced its outer-space adventure elements and the scale, it looks like something we haven’t seen before.

In that way it’s interesting to compare it to Thor, which has gone the opposite route, and geared a lot of its recent marketing to selling the love interest and the comedy. How much you should sell to the faithful is an interesting question when it comes to comic book movies. We’ll see the results by the end of summer.

Green Lantern Wondercon Footage Offers Scale, Other Worlds

The Green Lantern - which is due out June 17 – has so far only had one trailer that left the fan-base cold. It featured a more jokey Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, and it seemed to be played for laughs. For this weekend’s WonderCon presentation, Warner Brothers went the exact opposite direction with the Martin Campbell-helmed Superhero adaptation, and sold both the scale and the seriousness of the world of Green Lantern. Check it out…

There are a few moments of levity in the trailer – which play well – but for the most part the footage sells that this is world-building. It’s fun to look in the background, as the aliens go from humanoid (Mark Strong‘s Sinestro) to less so (Geoffrey Rush‘s voiced Tomar-re). And when the footage keeps to its space-based content – with Temuera Morrison’s Abin Sur rushing to earth after a ferocious attack – The Green Lantern looks like something we haven’t seen from a comic-book movie before. If this is the tone of the film, then the scale here will separate this from the comic-book pack.

The ending does concentrate on Earth, and there we see Peter Sarsgaard‘s Hector Hammond, who is obviously going through some transformation into an evil being. We also see very little of Blake Lively‘s character.

There’s a couple ways to look at this footage, but there’s no denying it’s amped up the expectations for The Green Lantern (especially since the first trailer was a dud). The main thing is that its makers knew their target demographic and sold it to them at WonderCon. There’s a lot of ground to cover in the film in terms of turning Hal Jordan into The Green Lantern, and we haven’t seen much of Blake Lively in action, so it’s hard to say that what was shown is representative of the whole, or just cherry-picked money shots.

We’re two and a half months away, so marketing is going to kick into over drive here shortly. But this is their best foot forward.

Warner Bros. Plan To ‘Reinvent’ Batman After ‘Dark Knight Rises’; Possible ‘Justice League’ Film In 2013

The blockbuster sequel news is coming in hard and heavy today, but this one might take the cake—in an interview with the L.A. Times, new Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov spoke about the future of superhero franchises with Warner Bros. after the release of Green Lantern, The Dark Knight Rises, and the Superman reboot.

While most of what Robinov let slip was pretty interesting if a little predictable (a film about The Flash is in development, as is a Wonder Woman movie, albeit unrelated to the upcoming TV show), what he said about the Batman franchise is a bit of a shocker:

“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

It sounds as if WB is planning to make more Batman’s without Nolan at the helm—because that has worked so well before (remember when Tim Burton left the Bats franchise and Warner decided to keep on going right away? The horror, the horror…) Not only that, it sounds like WB is gearing up for their own Avengers style franchise launch pad with a Justice League film: the studio head wants a JL film in theatres by 2013. For those not in the know, the Justice League features, among others, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and the Flash.

So… this is going to be interesting.

Warner Bros has released a new photo from their latest comic adaptation The Green Lantern. Instead of playing up the superhero elements of the movie, the image reveals a rather normal looking Hal Jordan and Hector Hammond. The duo, who will become mortal enemies, seem to be staring at something off in the distance. What is it? Check out the full photo…

Are we the only ones getting a serious Rain Man vibe from this photo? The look of stress on Ryan Reynolds‘ face, and the disconnected gaze on Peter Sarsgaard’s speaks volumes. They seem to be attending a major event, judging by their clothes, and the crowd of people behind them. What do you think?

Synopsis:

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity.
