Jack White To Compose ‘The Lone Ranger’ Musical Score

While most of the focus on Gore Verbinski’s upcoming full-length adaptation of The Lone Ranger has focused on Johnny Depp’s pasty-faced and eccentric take on the sidekick character of Tonto, news broke this week that another pale, oddball artist will be bringing his weirdness to The Lone Ranger—former White Stripes frontman Jack White.

That’s right—the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist behind the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather (dude’s also a solo artist, a producer, and runs his own record label) will be writing the score to the upcoming film. This will mark the first time White has composed the score for a film (he did perform the theme to 2008’s A Quantum of Solace, “Another Way to Die,” with Alicia Keys, as well as a tune on 2007’s Cold Mountain soundtrack).

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Variety that nabbing White was a major coup, as White is “an amazing songwriter with a unique style…we’re thrilled to hear his fresh take on the William Tell Overture.” The producer went on to remark that the idea to hire the former White Stripes singer/guitarist was Gore Verbinski’s, and that star Johnny Depp gave his sign-off of approval.

The Lone Ranger is currently filming in New Mexico, and is set for a May 31, 2013. The film stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the ranger, with Depp as Tonto, his Native American sidekick. Rumors from the set have indicated that the film will have a Big Trouble in Little China-styled twist, in which the hero is really the sidekick, and that the “heroic” ranger will really be the bumbling sidekick who wouldn’t make it without Tonto.

Want To See Johnny Depp In His ‘Lone Ranger’ Outfit?

After all the production difficulties and delays, it’s still a surprise to know that Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger is actually shooting. But now there’s evidence that it’s going forward, and it comes in a picture taken on set with Johnny Depp in his costume for the film. He’s playing Tonto, and they’re in the midst of filming.

This picture comes (obviously) from Badass Digest, and congrats to Devin Faraci for finding it. We’d seen an earlier still where Depp was wearing a crow’s hat, but this gives another look at Depp in the film, and it suggests that he’s going to be hiding his looks as much as possible. There’s something to that; you see a lot of good looking actors who like playing freaks because it’s freeing. Depp is no stranger to heavy costuming, from Edward Scissorhands to Captain Jack Sparrow, it’s obvious that Depp likes to get into extreme looks that favor the pale. It’s something he also did for this summer’s Dark Shadows.

Hopefully the delays on this production mean that they beat the script into shape. Originally the movie was considered cost-prohibitive, but Verbisnki and company cut the budget down from $260 Million to $215 Million. Often reporting these numbers make the budgets seem imaginary.

First Official Picture Of Johnny Depp And Armie Hammer In ‘The Lone Ranger’ Is Released

Curious as to how Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer look in the upcoming cinematic adaptation of The Lone Ranger? Well, you’re in luck, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer, taking a break from producing his dazzlingly horrible roster of films, tweeted an image featuring Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Depp as his Native American sidekick, Tonto. Check out the image below!

Here’s your first look at The Lone Ranger:

Word is that one of the major themes of the film is that Tonto is the real “brains behind the outfit,” with the sidekick emerging as the true hero and the Lone Ranger appearing as more of a Don Quixote to Tonto’s Sancho Panza (or: this is going to be like Big Trouble in Little China, but with cowboys. And, you know, not set in Little China). That could explain the pensive/ doubtful look that Depp’s Tonto seems to be shooting Hammer’s Ranger.

Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger will also star Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, and Helena Bonham Carter, and is set for a May 31, 2013 release.

Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger Begins Production

For a while there The Lone Ranger looked DOA, but today it’s actually in production. In fact, it’s shooting right now. Though the film reunited the Pirates of the Caribbean creative team of Johnny Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, (now Academy Award winning) director Gore Verbinski and writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio with Disney, it looked to be too expensive for their tastes, and they passed. But budgets were shuffled and now they’re going forward for a May 31, 2013 release.

The film also stars Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale , Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter. Hammer will be the titular Ranger – though it’s likely he’s playing it slightly comic, and that Depp’s Tonto is the real lead of the piece. Fichtner is the bad guy, and it seems likely that Ruth Wilson is the love interest. But, as Wilson played a slightly off but likeable serial killer in the BBC series Luther, it’s also possible that she’s playing a femme fatale.

Disney sent out a press release about the film, calling it “Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer films epic adventure” which suggest co-ownership – though the Bruck has had a shingle at Disney for a while. Perhaps 2010′s double failings of Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has made that shingle a bit looser.

The Lone Ranger is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

May 31 seems like an odd date, though the way summers are prepared now, it’s what they’ve got. The first week offers Iron Man 3, the second Pacific Rim, then comes Star Trek 2 a week later, which is followed by Fast and Furious 6. There are also two wide releases for the 4th of July. It’s possible we could see one of these bump to a winter release date before 2013.

The problems Disney was facing when this nearly didn’t happen are the same: it’s still a western, which proved disastrous for Cowboys And Aliens, and it’s an expensive redress of a cultural figure that has no great weight to youth culture. Now they have new problems: Armie Hammer is a couple years off of The Social Network at this point, J. Edgar didn’t help, and Mirror Mirror looks like a bomb in the making. And it’s interesting to note that Fichtner joined the cast about a week ago, so some decisions were very last minute.

The good news is that Verbinski is a very talented filmmaker, and he seems to understand Depp, so we’ll probably get an interesting movie regardless.

Is Johnny Depp’s Lone Ranger Back From the Dead?

Last we reported, Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp‘s take on The Lone Ranger was put out to pasture because of concerns of a huge budget. Now Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the film has finally got a contained budget and is going to try to start shooting in 2012, with an official announcement due next week.

The bottom line on this story is that big budget blockbusters have hit critical mass. A film like Pirates of the Caribbean 4 was stripped down and smaller than its previous entry, and still cost over $200 Million dollars. But most summer event films this year cost at least if not more than $200 Million – even if their listed production budget was much less. That means that a film needs to do about a half a billion worldwide to be profitable.

On top of that, there aren’t that many available brand names to pillage any more, so where investing $300 Million in a film like Transformers 3 seems reasonable, it’s much less so for a franchise that doesn’t have the same sort of innate appeal to audiences. Harry Potter is done.The more obvious step would be to invest in new original material to grow new franchises, but that’s not the current thinking – especially after something like Cowboys and Aliens.

But summer and winter need their event films, and Johnny Depp is still great internationally. And so it seems we’re getting a better budgeted blockbuster. With a date change, it’s hard to say if Armie Hammer will still be available, we’ll know more next week.

Werewolves Kill The Lone Ranger

Gore Verbinski. Johnny Depp. Armie Hammer. The writers of the original Pirates of the Caribbean. Jerry Bruckheimer. Depp as Tonto. How could The Lone Ranger go astray? And yet the Walt Disney company has decided to pass on this title, citing a budget that was guestimated at $230 Million. Those numbers sound astronomical, but in context, Warner Brothers spent a supposed $200 on The Green Lantern. What could make a western so expensive? Werewolves, according to Jeff Wells. The film was going to be a special effects bonanza.

There’s a number of reasons why this might not have floated, besides the expense and the werewolves. First and foremost is that Westerns have never been a huge draw in foreign markets. If you look at the numbers for True Grit, its international numbers were less than half of the domestic take, and while Cowboys and Aliens has sci-fi elements, its domestic cume should fall short of $100 Million, and may not fare as well internationally.

On top of that, Verbinski and Depp should have a “get out of jail free” card after making the Pirates trilogy. Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott cashed theirs with Robin Hood. But what may have also felled this project was Rango, which had the same director and star as the Pirates trilogy, but failed to generate too much heat. Arguments could be made that it was “animated” and “weird,” but it had the same release date as Alice in Wonderland - the first week of March – which has become a hot spot for Spring titles. It was also a Western, and while The Tourist made $200 internationally, Rango couldn’t reach those heights, it did $120 Million internationally. There are also the studio politics involved, which are hard to fathom. Regardless, the project is dead at Disney, and the price tag should keep it from moving to another studio.

Ryan Gosling Up For Lone Ranger?

The Wrap is reporting that Ryan Gosling is in the room for the Gore Verbinski/Johnny Depp version of The Lone Ranger. Depp would play Tonto to Gosling’s white knight of a cowboy. At the same time they are noting that Gosling’s schedule as of now is in conflict with doing the picture. Which makes the likelihood of him doing it all the more questionable.

Gosling is currently attached to Logan’s Run, with his Drive Director Nicolas Winding Refn. Since the two just did a picture together, it seems unlikely, though – if nothing else – fairly mercinary for Gosling to abandon the project, which would probably collapse without him. The Lone Ranger is a bigger production, and with Depp and Verbinski an A title where he would get to basically play a goof (it seems) as the focus is more likely to be on Tonto because it’s Depp. Ten years ago it would be a Brendan Fraser role.

Ryan Gosling is similar to James Franco in that they’re both getting thrust into a lot of huge budgeted productions but without having warmed themselves to audiences. Hopefully for studios the films themselves should sell audiences, but neither come across as people necessarily go to movies to see. But that may just be the dwindling class of A-list actors in the new generation.

The Lone Ranger is currently a 2014 tentpole release.that gosling has serious scheduling conflicts makes this seem like a bullshit piece, but you never know.

Rango: Movie Review

This week Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski team up again for another wild ride — only this time they’re tackling an animated world with their latest creation Rango. This is one of those films that takes a number of wild risks along the way but succeeds in almost all of them. It’s safe to say that their was no lack of imagination or attention to detail that went into this film, despite its few problems…

The Plot:

A very Johnny Depp like chameleon finds himself trapped in the desert and before he knows it he is playing the role of the unexpected hero of a nearby town giving him a new sense of purpose in live — the only problem is can he keep up the act long enough to save his fellow critters from bandits, corrupt politicians and more? Is playing the part enough? Or will he have to become it?

The Good:

The Beginning: The film starts off with a band as ww are immediately thrown into Rango’s unique world. We’ve got ourselves some action, plenty of comedy, even some self-deprecation from the filmmakers, and then a metaphorical conundrum to get us pondering — success! After the first 20 minutes of this film I was sold, I’d seen enough to leave me satisfied, or so I thought… More on that later. Let’s concentrate on the good.
The Look: It so nice to see an animation that’s like no other. Much in the way that Tim Burton broke boundaries with Nightmare Before Christmas, this film takes an equally large step but in a very different way. This film is dry, dirty, sometimes almost color-less, our lead character has tiny eyes instead of big round ones — honestly I’ve never seen an animation quite like this and it was so much fun to sit there and take it all in. It gives new life to this genre and shows us that not being perfect is sometimes the best thing you can do! Which conveniently goes quite well with the moral of the story.
The References: Much in the way Quentin Tarantino references a number of movies he loves within his own, Gore squeezes in as many references as he can from Chinatown to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (turns out it wasn’t bats Depp was swatting it was his future lizard self!). The thing about Tarantino is that he’s one of the only directors that can reference a movie and yet still have it be his own thing — this film was very much pointing out other films, not quite incorporating them the way that Tarantino does BUT I have to say I love that those kind of references are being made in an animation that kids will see.
The Little Moments: From the amazing Mariachi band to the way Rango’s eyes dart around and his broken neck, there are a number of small details in this film that make it worth seeing. There was so much time and effort put into all of these characters it’s hard not to love them.

The Bad:

The Length: The biggest problem of this film is its length. I’m not sure if Gore just LIKES lengthy films, but the runtime much like in his last Pirates film — the length just begins to weigh down everything you see in front of you and it begins to feel like you’re just moving from one set piece to another for now real reason…
Too Much: At the end of the second act you realize that the mission that they’re on doesn’t actually push the story forward and it begins to feel like they’re just throwing everything into the fire. I guess it’s nice to have a big action sequence at that stage of the film, but when it doesn’t really the story forward and in fact, gives us a whole new obstacle to over-come, the story ends up taking away from the charm that made the film so great in the beginning.

Overall:

Less is more in a film like this. The small moments, the intricate style choices, the texture of the clothing, the colors of the scenes, the well thought out one-liners, the characters development and the abstract metaphorical ideas are what make this an amazing film despite the fact that they story runs away with itself and doesn’t do justice to all the work put into this film.

This film begins by taking a huge risk and widely succeeds, but then regresses and becomes another action, adventure tale. If they just could have tightened up the story and been able to stick with the original concept, this film would have been one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen. Instead, it was good. Maybe this is because they felt it needed to “appeal to broader audiences” or maybe it’s what they meant to make.

But! I’ll take a film that touches on greatness over one that never tries to do so any day. So my recommendation — go for it.

Rating: 7/10

Rango Interview with Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin and Gore Verbinski

This week in theaters, Gore Verbinski‘s latest extravaganza, Rango hits theaters. This film takes of number of interesting, artistic risks and is able to do so because of the powerhouses behind it. Gore has just come off the successful Pirates franchise and if you’ve seen any of the posters for this film you should know that “Johnny Depp is Rango.” Normally I don’t like such blatant advertising but because I support this film and always applaud a metaphorical head trip with many fine cinematic references, I’ll back that up — Johnny Depp is Rango along with the lovely and hysterical Isla Fisher as the rough, tough and sometimes frozen Beans and the adorable and witty Abigail Breslin as the sweetly sinister Priscilla — and you should see it.

We sat down with the crew to talk about the film, find out what they had to say below…

Gore and Johnny, together again…

You guys have obviously worked together a few times now, and I was just wondering if you could each comment on what you like so much about working with the other.

GORE VERBINSKI: I like the way he smells. [LAUGHTER]

JOHNNY DEPP: I’ve been told I smell good; I mean, I don’t look like I smell good. [LAUGHTER]

GORE VERBINSKI: I don’t know – because we have shorthand, talking and sound effects and unfinished sentences and -

JOHNNY DEPP: Yeah.

GORE VERBINSKI: He seems to understand exactly what that means, and I get it back. And you know, a very – very complex direction, like more fuzz -

JOHNNY DEPP: More fuzz, yeah.

GORE VERBINSKI: More stink on this line, you know. Really, that’s about as intellectual as it gets.

JOHNNY DEPP: And it really is that, exactly, you know. “Ah, let’s make – you know – maybe some more fuzz. Let’s put some more fuzz on it.” “Okay. Gotcha.” No, he’s a very – I mean, working with Gore, you know, in three “Pirates” films and Rango certainly, there are no limits to what you could – to the possibilities, I mean, you know, he allows you to try all kinds of things, you know, that sometimes fail miserably.

GORE VERBINSKI: Yes, please.

JOHNNY DEPP: And other times, you know, goes into this kind of weird – you’ve just arrived at some place that you know no one’s ever been to before, you know. And he welcomes it and he creates an atmosphere that allows you to just, you know, go essentially ape. And yeah, and it’s a blast, you know – that’s really a fun part of the process.

GORE VERBINSKI: That’s really – what’s great about Johnny is, you know, the trust that – you know, neither of us are going to make the other one look like an ass, you know. I have to – he has to trust that at the end of the day, we’re not going to use that stuff -

JOHNNY DEPP: Um-hmm.

GORE VERBINSKI: Where we’ve tried something that didn’t work, but we’re going to try it because anomaly and you know, we’ve got this sort of pursuit of finding the truly awkward moment, you know, which is – you’re only going to get there by not knowing, and sort of venturing into the unknown. And so, you know, I just think he’s incredibly brave, you know, on top of being incredibly talented. It’s like you’ve got to kind of cross that threshold.

Acting in an Animated-Gore World:

For Johnny, you’re a very physical actor, and I just wondered with this process, it’s different than the other animated films you’ve done, where you were in a booth. You actually acted this out. And I wondered if that helped you. And maybe the actresses, as well, could talk a little about doing that. It’s different than most animated pictures.

JOHNNY DEPP: Well, yeah. I mean, ultimately, it was everything; though, you know, there were times when you didn’t feel that, when you were doing it – you’d rather have been – because you know, well, we’re lazy. [LAUGHTER]

JOHNNY DEPP: At least I am. And I’d sort of rather just sit in front of a microphone and do the thing. However -

GORE VERBINSKI: That’s exactly the point.

JOHNNY DEPP: The process that we did, that Gore created this sort of atmosphere that was really, truly ludicrous; I mean, just ridiculous. It was like just regional theater at its worst.

[LAUGHTER]

JOHNNY DEPP: And somehow, because of – not the idea of motion capture, but emotion capture, you know; certain gestures, body language, movement, something you might have done, you know, with your eyes – all those guys, you know, these animators took it and put it in there. So, I mean, it was very strange. I mean, for Harry Dean Stanton to walk up to me one afternoon – because I’ve known him for a million years – and he walks up to me and says, “This is a weird gig, man.” [LAUGHTER] And I went, “Oh, yeah. You’ve just started. You just wait.” You know. But ultimately, it was the right thing to do. And that was his vision, and we saw it through.

What did you think, Isla and Abigail?

ISLA FISHER: I think the characters had humanity because we were interacting with each other, and more chemistry; and so it felt more organic and real. What do you think, Abigail?

ABIGAIL BRESLIN: You know, it was – you know, when you’re in just like a booth, by yourself, it’s like very isolating, and like you don’t really, like, have anything to sort of play off of except like one take of like one line, and then like a beep, and then – so this was, this was – I think that it was, well, for me, at least, a lot more fun. Although I did wear a wig, like a black wig and I got a really bad rash on my neck from it, and so that was a little unfortunate, but -

ISLA FISHER: And you were carrying a gun.

ABIGAIL BRESLIN: I was.

ISLA FISHER: Which was weird, to see Abigail with a massive gun.

ABIGAIL BRESLIN: It was so bizarre, because like there was actually guns going, and like you don’t think that there are like firearms in an animated movie.

[LAUGHTER]

ABIGAIL BRESLIN: And it’s like live. That’s all I thought about it.

JOHNNY DEPP: Gore always travels with guns.

GORE VERBINSKI: Absolutely. Keep people from going to sleep.

JOHNNY DEPP: Yeah.

To do 3D or to NOT do 3D — that is the struggle:

I’ve heard in previous reports that you kind of fought tooth and nail in order to make sure that Rango isn’t going to be in 3D. Are you for or against 3D in general? Is Rango not being in 3D like the only time when you’re going to be like, no to 3D? And how do you all feel about just kind of like 3D being like the big trend in general?

JOHNNY DEPP: I’m waiting for 5D. [LAUGHTER] That’s what I want.

GORE VERBINKSI: I don’t know – I just don’t feel – I watched the movie; I don’t think there’s a dimension missing. I don’t feel like, I don’t watch it and go, you know, “It’s flat,” or it’s, you know, missing anything. So you know, we talked about it early on and it just didn’t seem like we needed to go there.

ISLA FISHER: I think the glasses are really uncomfortable. [LAUGHTER]

ABIGAIL BRESLIN: Like, it actually looks like, it looks so like lifelike anyway, like I think that it looks like 3D; it looked like the animals were there anyway. It looked really cool, I thought. And 3D makes me dizzy.

Is There a Chance of a Rango Sequel??

This is for Johnny and Gore. I noticed, looking through the Rango movie storybook, that he has a continuing adventure and goes to another town. Can we hope that there might be a Rango 2?

GORE VERBINSKI: [INDISCERNIBLE]

JOHNNY DEPP: I think that means yes.

GORE VERBINSKI: I don’t know. Let’s see if, you know, people like Rango – Rango. I’m not even going to call it Rango I.

JOHNNY DEPP: [LAUGHTER] Rango 1.

PRESS: So there’s a possibility?

GORE VERBINSKI: Currently, not talking about it. I mean, it felt like, you know – I mean, if you just had a kid, would people say, you want – “How about twins?” [LAUGHTER] “We’re just – we’re still recovering.”

Finding A Voice:

This question is for Isla. Can you tell us a little bit about creating the voice of Beans, and if you feel like having to cover your accent so frequently in films made it easier to do the characterization? And then I have a follow-up for Johnny.

ISLA FISHER: I kind of imagine Beans, if Clint Eastwood and Holly Hunter would have a love child, that would be Beans. And Gore, obviously-

JOHNNY DEPP: I’d like to watch that.

GORE VERBINSKI: Yes. [LAUGHTER]

ISLA FISHER: If you were around. No, and then I just – the physicality of the character had already been created; I’d already seen – Gore presented me with 20 minutes of the movie, just linear drawings. So I knew, you know, how she moved. And then I was able to – you know, Gore was with me every step of the way vocally, and he was very specific about what he wanted. And no one ever wants to hire an Australian, so I’m just used to never doing my own voice, ever. [LAUGHTER]

ISLA FISHER: I mean, they do want to hire – oh, that came out wrong. They do want to hire Australians, obviously, but not with the accent. [LAUGHTER]

PRESS: But I was just wondering, for all the actors – how much of your characters did you get to see in terms of the artwork, before you started playing with them?

ABIGAIL BRESLIN: I saw a picture of Priscilla. And I would have done it based on like how – I mean, let’s face it, she’s a glamour girl. So she’s kind of gorgeous. You know, but I thought she was adorable. So I would have done it based on that. But yeah, I thought all the characters were pretty cute – but in a strange way, odd, but you know, cute. They’re not like cuddly, you know – it’s not like, you don’t want to like hold them, but – yeah.

The Stunt….

[Justin Bieber walks into the room right before they end. A surprise? Perhaps! Or perhaps it's just cross-promotion since they are both being released by the same studio...]

JOHNNY DEPP: Hey, Man. [APPLAUSE]

JOHNNY DEPP: We just established that I’m a Belieber.

JUSTIN BIEBER: You know, and I’m a big fan of you so I had to come support you.

JOHNNY DEPP: Bless you, man.

JUSTIN BIEBER: I had to come say hi – I heard you were in the building. You’re a Belieber and I’m a big fan of him. [LAUGHTER]

JOHNNY DEPP: By the way, Justin Bieber. [APPLAUSE as Bieber waves to everyone]

JOHNNY DEPP: Well done, Man, thank you. Okay, now, who’s not a Belieber now? [LAUGHTER] You know what I mean? Aren’t we all Beliebers? Bless him. Yeah. I know – how am I going to explain this to my daughter?

GORE VERBINSKI: Who was that?

JOHNNY DEPP: That was the Beatles.

Will any of the commercials that air during the Super Bowl this Sunday be “fresh” and “new”? The studios have released more than their fair share of early TV spots including ones for Transformers Dark of the Moon, Kung Fu Panda 2, Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides, and now Rango! Both of Johnny Depp’s releases are getting the Super Bowl treatment. Check out the TV spot below…

We can’t wait for this movie to come out. It looks hilarious and a lot different from all the other animated films flooding the market.

Rango centers on a chameleon who’s going through an identity crisis and embarks on a cross-country journey where he ends up in the dangerous SouthWest territory. Instead of the animals being portrayed as creatures in the wild they’re given human characteristics, a cowboy/mariachi wardrobe, and a Western genre vibe.

The voice cast for the film includes, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant.

Rango is scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2011.

Another trailer has been released for Gore Verbinski’s animated feature Rango. The movie stars Johnny Depp as the title character who’s just as unconventional as his name. He’s a chameleon that doesn’t exactly know how to blend in. Over at Yahoo Movies, they posted the new theatrical trailer, which we have below along with a new poster for the film. You can take a look at both now…

When the first trailer for this film was released, we were completely baffled. We weren’t sure what to make of it, but this version makes the movie look hilarious. Depp always makes interesting choices doesn’t he?

Confirmed: Gore Verbinski Directing Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger

Back in September there was speculation that Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinki would reunite with Johnny Depp for the big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger. And after months of deliberation we’ve finally got an answer: Yes! According to Deadline, Verbinski has officially signed on the dotted line to make Ranger his next big project.

The Lone Ranger will be produced by Disney (no surprise there) but no shoot date has been set. Verbinski was waiting for a new project to sink his teeth into after wrapping his first animated feature Rango, which also stars Depp. When nothing else caught his attention he finally gave in and decided to direct The Lone Ranger.

The Lone Ranger character originated on the 1930s radio show of the same name and has seen many screen iterations, including a 1956 Warner Bros. film, a 1981 Universal feature and a 2003 telefilm on the WB starring Chad Michael Murray. In this recreation, Depp is slated to play the title character’s sidekick Tonto. We’re not sure who’ll actually play the headlining cowboy. Who’s talented enough to overshadow Depp on screen?
