Golden Globes 2012: ‘The Artist,’ Kelsey Grammer, and George Clooney Take Awards

The Golden Globes—the goofy little brother of the Academy Awards—were held Sunday night in Los Angeles, doling out awards to members of the film and TV community in a televised orgy of celebrity backslapping mixed with occasional hilarious criticism from host Ricky Gervais (“the Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem. The Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing’s been proved”).

The Artist cleaned up nicely with the most prices (three); however, there were a few surprises (apparently, we live in a world in which Kelsey Grammer is a better actor than Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston—who knew?).

New British Immigration Law Allows Oscar Winners To Short-Cut The Immigration Process

Since immigrations law isn’t a touchy issue at all, I’m really sure this is going to go over really, really well with people. You see, today marks the day that England’s Tier 1 visa law goes into effect, which, in addition to letting the cream of the science and engineering crop sneak in early as well, essentially allows celebrity award winners to “fast-track” the immigration process to become British citizens.

According to Movieline:

Britain’s Tier 1 Exceptional Talent measure allows for leaders or potential leaders in the fields of science, humanities, engineering and arts to immigrate more easily to the U.K. than previous visa laws allowed. As The Hollywood Reporter puts it, the arts category targets filmmakers and actors who have at least one major award on their mantlepiece already, or those who have been nominated in recent years:

To be eligible, applicants must have won an Academy Award, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe or an Emmy Award or have been nominated in the five years before applying. The government has set aside 300 spots for anyone who meets the requirements.

Meanwhile, England is concurrently trying to reduce immigration numbers for non-Oscar nominee types, attempting to narrow net immigration to “tens of thousands.” A thousand spaces in total have been reserved for the Tier 1 program, so if you’re an Oscar/Emmy/Golden Globe winner, get packing.

Nope, this shouldn’t offend anyone, anyone at all. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m just gonna duck beneath these Molotov cocktails that are being tossed over my head. You understand.

2011 Golden Globes Winners – Predictable and Safe

Sunday night, the 68th Annual Golden Globes aired on NBC and the most exciting thing to come out of it was Ricky Gervais. No one was at the water cooler this morning talking about who won for Best Actor or Actress, instead they were more concerned with who Gervais pissed off during his opening monologue. Since when does the host steal the spotlight from the films and its stars? Perhaps the reason more people weren’t interested in the categories was because they already knew who would win? Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor: say what? Natalie Portman for Best Actress: really?! The Social Network for Best Picture Drama: who saw that coming?

If you didn’t notice, those were statements of sarcasm. This awards season has its favorites, and they’ve been collecting a bounty of trophies and accolades. This works wonders for people’s careers, but makes for boring and predictable awards shows, hence the Golden Globes.

Here are a few things that could have helped last night’s lukewarm ceremony…

There Needs to be a Threat: Last year, James Cameron shook up the Globes when he won Best Director and his film Avatar won Best Picture. Prior to the announcement there was a feeling that the awards would go to either him or Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker. In the end Cameron got the Globe but Bigelow got the Oscar. It all evened out.
Mix it Up: We’re not saying that The Social Network isn’t deserving, but there were other great films released last year. If they gave the award to Inception or The King’s Speech, people would be shocked, but not appalled because they’re both deserving of the honor.
Too Close for Comfort: The Globes aired on Sunday, and the Critics Choice Awards aired on Friday on VH1. Did you know that in all the major categories for both ceremonies, the same actors and films won? Bale, Melissa Leo, Portman, Colin Firth, and yes, The Social Network. Therefore, we had to hear the same acceptance speeches twice! If you’re going to award the same people don’t have the shows so close together. At least we have a month of breathing room until the Oscars come around.

Overall, the Golden Globes were predictable and the awards themselves brought nothing to the table. There was no shock and awe, no “can you believe they won” moments. The Globes are usually more interesting than the other shows because the actors are looser (thanks to complimentary wine), and it’s a more intimate setting. But instead of getting an entertaining show full of snubs and surprises we got The Critics Choice Awards — again.

Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2011 – What Did You Think?

Sunday night, British actor and comedian Ricky Gervais hosted the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards for the second straight year. The host pulled no punches with his opening monologue and he kept the audience on their toes throughout the night with his sarcastic and straight for the jugular quips. No one was spared from his ridicule, not even the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press!

Here are some of the high (low) lights from Gervais’ big night…

On the Tourist: “I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.”
On HFPA President, Philip Berk: “I had to help the HFPA president off the toilet and pop his teeth back in.”
Berk’s Response: “Ricky, next time you want me to help qualify your movies, go to another guy.”
Introducing Bruce Willis he referred to him as Ashton Kutcher’s dad.
On Charlie Sheen: “It’s gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie [Sheen] calls it: breakfast”
On the Extensive Airbrushing on the Sex and the City 2 Posters: “Girls, we know how old you are,” he quips. “I saw one of you in an episode of ‘Bonanza.’”
On Scientology: “Also not nominated, I Love You Phillip Morris. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay, so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then.”
On Lost: “It was quite a complicated finale. I’m not sure I totally understood, but from what I made out, I’m pretty sure the fat one ate them all.”

Last night the room was filled with a mixture of laughs, and awkward groans from celebrities. Some of whom voiced their disdain when they got the opportunity to take the stage. Before presenting an award, Robert Downey, Jr. stated, “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the show’s going pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?”

He was followed by the one-two punch of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen who also voiced their opinions about the night’s emcee. Hanks said he could recall “back when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian.” Allen replied sternly, “Neither of which he is now.”

Some critics say that Gervais went too far, while other say his jokes added a much needed edge to the stuffy ceremony. After watching the show and reading these quotes, what do you think?

2011 Golden Globes – Best Picture – The Social Network

The award for Best Picture Drama at the 68th Annual Golden Globes went to The Social Network. The David Fincher directed film about Facebook has swept the majority of the critic awards this season, and it continues to plow its way through the competition. Producer Scott Rudin accepted on behalf of the cast and crew and stated that he’s waited 30 years for this moment.

The Best Actor in a Drama trophy went to Colin Firth at the 68th Annual Golden Globes. The actor picked up the award for his performance as King George VI, in The King’s Speech. While on stage he spoke about going through a bit of a midlife crisis, and how winning for Best Actor is the only thing keeping him off a Harley Davidson.

As expected Natalie Portman took home the award for Best Actress in a Drama for her performance as Nina in Black Swan. She thanked her parents, her grandmother, and her fiance who also choreographed the performances in the film. It was a light, yet somewhat emotional speech that had her co-stars elated.

2011 Golden Globes – Best Director – David Fincher

Continuing on his awards sweep, David Fincher took home the honor in the Best Director category at the 68th Annual Golden Globes. Fincher came well prepared with a written speech where he discussed how the script for The Social Network was brought to him by producer Scott Rudin, and how he had no idea how successful it would become.

2011 Golden Globes – Best Animated Film – Toy Story 3

As expected, Toy Story 3 walked away with the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 68th Annual Golden Globes. Sunday evening the honor was accepted by director Lee Unkrich, who made a crack to presenters Justin Bieber and Hailee Steinfeld about them not being born when the first Toy Story came out. This film is pretty much a shoe in to win in the same category at the Oscars.

One of the most predictable categories at the 68th Annual Golden Globes was for Best Supporting Actor. The statue went to Christian Bale for his portrayal of Dicky Hedlund in the boxing drama The Fighter. The actor previously picked up the award in the same category at Friday night’s Critics Choice Awards.

Leighton Meester, Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon to Present at Golden Globes

The Golden Globe Awards are about two weeks away and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are in the process of finalizing their list of presenters. Instead of releasing a press announcement like any normal group would, they’ve been unveiling the names of attendees via Twitter. Yep, the HFPA are hip with the times. Check out the presenters below…

In a bid to promote their latest film Country Strong (opens January 7), Sony announced that co-stars Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester will be on hand to present during the telecast along with Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson. And the newest “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez will also take the stage on the big night.

In an interesting twist, Matt Damon has been named as one of the people who’ll introduce Robert De Niro, when he receives his Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. We know De Niro directed him in The Good Shephard but we thought that Martin Scorsese or Harvey Keitel would have that honor? Maybe they’ll all be a part of it, who knows?

The Golden Globes will air on NBC Sunday, January 16.
