‘Ted’ Moves Into The ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Release Date of June 29

Summer 2012 is beginning to feel like a game of “release date musical chairs.” After Paramount’s surprise move to push back action sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation from June 29th to 2013, Universal has decided to make hay while the proverbial sun shines by shuffling Seth McFarlane‘s R-rated comedy Ted as well. Ted has now been moved ahead by two weeks and has been dropped into G.I. Joe’s just-vacated June 29th slot.

Paramount announced the G.I. Joe: Retaliation push-back yesterday, stating that they wanted a whole nine months extra to convert the movie into 3D, and do a good job at it, and so some quick and clever thinking from someone at Universal certainly seems to have paid off in Ted’s favor.

After all, Ted was in danger of being overshadowed between two colossus superhero movies, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knig ht Rises, in its previous release date of July 13. Bailing the film out of those troubled waters and dropping it into the end of June may just save it at the box office.

Now Ted will have the male demographic all to itself, with only competition from People Like Us, Magic Mike and Madea’s Witness Protection. As of now, Ted’s biggest competition, at least for a few days, will be Brave and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Also, June’s Adam Sandler comedy That’s My Boy will likely have run its course by the 29th, since it opens on the 15th and will hopefully die a mercifully quick death.

So far, the Ted trailer has been doing well in theaters and across the web people seem to already be talking about it – well, it is a cursing, screwing, drinking teddy bear, so what do you expect?

Ted stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, Giovanni Ribisi and Seth MacFarlane as Ted, a teddy bear that came to life as a result of a childhood wish, and has stayed with his owner throughout adulthood. It’s also MacFarlane’s feature film directorial debut.

The Rum Diary: Movie Review

Based on the recently published, national bestseller by the troublesome Dr. Gonzo (Hunter S. Thompson) Bruce Robinson presents a disappointing adaptation of The Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp, Richard Jenkins and Aaron Eckhart. I would’ve included Amber Heard in the line-up but her performance is so abominable that I’ve deemed her unworthy of sharing a sentence with the aforementioned actors.

The Plot:

Vagrant journalist, drunk and general hell-raiser Paul Kemp (Depp) has exhausted the madness of Manhattan and the conventions of Eisenhower America. Desperate for a change of scenery, he accepts a position at The San Juan Star, one of Puerto Rico’s dwindling publications. Run by its harried editor, Mr. Lotterman (Jenkins) and staffed with a terrifically deranged group of writers, photographers and “researches,” the paper’s headquarters appears more like a halfway house than a remotely respected institution.

Kemp quickly meets Sanderson (Eckhart), a money hungry entrepreneur looking to transform impoverished Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise. Wooing him with a corvette, his pin-up hot fiance, Chenault (Heard) and boatloads of money, Sanderson commissions Kemp to write favorably about his seedy property development deals. Kemp’s ambivalent until Sanderson bails him out of an evening of belligerent strife and is essentially beholden to the bastard. Two options: Use his words to make a buck or to expose Sanderson’s unsavory scheme!

The Good:

Absurdity: Most of the characters in this story are drunken buffoons slinking in and out of rum-induced contention, and in many ways the story feels like nothing more than a barrage of incoherent tirades. You will laugh. Hard.

The Bad:

Adaptation: “The adaptation” is a tricky venture. Structurally, novels don’t always translate and writers risk doing the original story injustice by cutting material, re-shaping the plot or cramming 800 pages of shit into 120. The Rum Diary is an excellent example of a novel that makes for a horrible adaptation. It reads like a series of unstructured, stream-of-consciousness journal entries and the majority of the characters are derivatives of one persona (Thompson himself). Robinson makes significant edits to Thompson’s tale by removing characters (“Yeamon”, originally Kemp’s partner) and rearranging relationships to generate more dramatic tension (Chenault, Kemp’s obsession, is now engaged to Sanderson instead of Yeamon). These are risky but reasonable edits and yet, Robinson still manages to blow it with pacing that out-slugs the book’s and his utter failure to re-create Thompson’s unprecedented voice. Again, adapting this in the first place seemed silly, so if you plan to re-direct the plot to make it adaptable, MAKE IT GOOD.
Amber Heard: Chenault, engaged to Sanderson, is the unattainable object of Kemp’s affection. The story is ultimately about the American dream, and Chenault is attached to the man exploiting that very dream. Kemp is so deeply fixated with her because she’s just as unobtainable as the dream itself. In short, the Kemp/Chenault relationship is both fabulously scandalous and quite instrumental in the overall chaos of Kemp’s conundrum. Not only was there zero chemistry between Depp and Heard but Heard (despite her indisputable hotness) was simply boring.

Overall:

Skip it. Thompson fans will be disappointed and random movie-goers will be bored.

Rating: 4/10

Giovanni Ribisi Joins Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis in Ted

The cast for Seth MacFarlane’s Ted just got a little bigger. The comedy’s roster features Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Adam Scott, and now according to Variety, Giovanni Ribisi has just joined the cast. The movie will mark MacFarlane’s directorial debut for the big screen. He’s best known for his work on Fox’s “Family Guy,” “The Cleveland Show,” and “American Dad.”

Ted centers on a a grown man (Wahlberg) whose childhood wish was for his cherished teddy bear to come to life. As a result of his desperation and faith, it eventually does but it turns into a pot-smoking, swearing nightmare. The bear will be CG-generated and voiced by MacFarlane himself.

Ribisi will play a man named Donny, who’s obsessed with Ted. We don’t know why he’s obsessed with him. Maybe it’s because he’s a bear, who can talk, and smokes weed? We would personally be afraid of such a thing but this is a movie.

Not only will MacFarlane direct and star in Ted, but he also co-wrote the screenplay with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild. Is there anything that man can’t do?

Middle Men forces the most conservative viewer to take a walk on the wild side. The film centers on the world of internet porn and how it came to be. Apparently two druggies (one who’s a genius), a clean cut business man, a mafia boss, and an underhanded lawyer all played a part in one of the biggest and most lucrative industries in the world. This film attempts to tell their story, and give star Luke Wilson a few legitimate dramatic scenes in the process.

The Plot:

Middle Men takes place in 1995 when the internet was still in its infancy stage. At the time, it didn’t have much to offer in terms of content but two men named Wayne Beering (Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Macht) changed all that. They came up with a way to get adult entertainment on the web and a business man named Jack Harris (Wilson) helped them make money off it. At the time they had no idea how big the internet would become or how much money they could earn.

The Good:

James Caan: Caan’s performance as a sleazy, out for himself lawyer was one of the most impressive things to watch in this film. He wasn’t doing his usual mobster shtick, which he’s become known for. He stepped outside the box and played a character completely engulfed with greed and white collar crime. His character is stuck up, not afraid to get his hands dirty, and has the slimy voice to match.
The Story: The overall premise is pretty intriguing. Two simpleminded coke-heads changed the face of the most powerful tool in the world by accident and while high.

The Kind of Bad:

Ribisi and Macht: These two guys are at the center of the story yet their characters are hard to watch. Every scene Ribisi’s in he steals the spotlight but after a while his loud and obnoxious antics grow tiresome. Both characters are drug addicts and their always going 100 miles an hour. They have no range, their always amped up, and it becomes repetitive and annoying after a while.

The Bad:

The Narration: This is a prime example of a movie that takes the art of the voice over to the extreme. Wilson narrates scenes that don’t need to be narrated. There’s literally a shot of him saying he’s going to knock on a door and then he knocks on a door! That’s self explanatory. No voice over needed.
The Timeline: The timeline set up for the film is all over the place. Within the first 10 minutes you hop from 2004 to 1997, then the late eighties and then the mid-nineties. It’s hard to keep track.

Overall:

Middle Men is a decent film, Wilson delivers a solid performance but Caan walks away with some of the best scenes. It’s entertaining but nothing to write home about.

Rating: 6/10

Middle Men opens in theaters on August 6, 2010.

Paramount Vantage has just released the first trailer for their porn-centric film, Middle Men. If you’re thinking this is an updated version of Boogie Nights get your mind out of the gutter because its not. Instead, it centers on the rise of adult entertainment on the internet thanks to a few men who weren’t afraid to push the envelope. Take a look…

They came up with a way to get adult entertainment on the web and a business man named Jack Harris (Luke Wilson) helped them make money off it.

At the time they had no idea how big the internet would become or how much money they could earn. It’s a typical rags to riches story that shows the rise and the eventual fall of its protagonists. Besides the 3 main stars, the trailer has plenty of cameo appearances including Kevin Pollack and Kelsey Grammer who plays a corrupt senator with an affinity for workplace porn.

Middle Men was directed by George Gallo and is scheduled hit theaters on August 6, 2010

Tonight at 5:30pm (PST) you’ll be able to watch the UK red carpet premiere of James Cameron‘s upcoming epic Avatar live, right here on ScreenCrave. We’ll be streaming the event for you below so that you can watch as the stars of the film Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, and many more walk the red carpet (or maybe it will be blue?) and talk about the film.

Avatar Clip Shows an Angry Sigourney Weaver

Another video clip has been released from 20th Century Fox in promotion of James Cameron‘s Avatar. This time the focus isn’t on Sam Worthington or Zoe Saldana, but co-stars Sigourney Weaver and Giovanni Ribisi. In the following scene, Weaver’s character Grace is very upset by an abrupt decision that Ribisi’s character Parker has made.

In the film Ribisi stars as Parker Selfridge, the man behind Jake Sully’s (Worthington) acceptance into their top secret program. Grace is apprehensive about his involvement, but Parker is adamant that he’s the right choice. Since he’s the twin brother of one of their fallen soldiers he can replace him in more ways than one.

We also learn the real reason why the humans are invading the Na’vi land. They want to acquire a natural resource that can only be found on the alien planet. Apparently a small chunk is worth 20 million, and it’s what’s funding their entire science department.

Avatar will debut in theaters on December 18th, which means in two weeks we’ll finally get to see what all the hype is about. Check out the clip of the bickering co-workers…
