New International ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Trailer Shows Things Going Boom A Lot

Well, another day, another G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer that shows things exploding, people running while seemingly coated in Crisco to replicate sweat, people shooting at various things, some sword fights on a mountain, and Bruce Willis shows up, shoots people, and smirks for a little bit. Oh, and The Rock glares at things and occasionally does that eyebrow cocking thing. Exciting?

Also, you see the White House being taken over by the Cobras, along with the new casting additions of Bruce Willis, The Rock, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, RZA, and D.J. Cotrona. The returning cast features Channing Tatum, Ray Park, Lee Byung-hun, Arnold Vosloo and Jonathan Pryce. Check it out:

It looks like pretty generic modern action movie stuff (Look, a famous national landmark! Look, slow motion shots that speed up and then slow back down! Look, things repeatedly exploding! Look, a cameo by an action megastar!), but hey, one can’t exactly expect much from a film that’s a sequel to a movie that is based on a Hasbro action figure line and 1980s cartoon series, right? Oh well, G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens on June 29, and is directed by Jon Chu.

Is knowing truly half the battle?

The Rock and Bruce Willis Enliven G.I. Joe Retaliation Trailer

How do you make a sequel to a modestly received blockbuster like the first G.I. Joe? One: you hired Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis for your action star bonafides. Two: You open your trailer and film by slaughtering the majority of the cast from the previous film. That’s Channing Tatum in the first few moments, and then he seems to leave the film (whether temporarily or permanently it’s hard to say). Check out the trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation…

The films director is Jon M. Chu, who will be known to any fans of modern musicals, as he’s helmed the last two Step Up movies as well as the Justin Bieber documentary. This was his chance to break out of the musical ghetto, and it looks like he embraced the challenge.

The first film got mostly mixed reactions, with critics and audiences divided on whether it was stupid or stupid fun. It also did just okay at the box office. Going by the two to one theory of success, the film would have lost money if films like this aren’t also about the merchandise sales and perhaps that’s why we’re getting this one as well. It is an entertaining trailer, so it may wash the stigma of “giant toy advert” off it. Then again, maybe not.

Jon M. Chu and Rupert Wyatt Talk About Their Latest Films

How does one deal with press? For both Jon M. Chu, and Rupert Wyatt, both are walking into a battlefield with their next films. For Jon M. Chu, he’s been signed on for the G.I. Joe sequel, but is known for his musicals, while Rupert Wyatt, he’s putting out a new Planet of the Apes film after the franchise has struggled to reboot itself. Both have offered themselves to the press to make their case for their films.

For Rupert Wyatt, the trailer and advance buzz for the release of Rise of the Planet of the Apes began in earnest this week for the August 5 release of the film. The trailer offers glimpses of the film to be, and he talked about the movie (as much as he could) with Alex Billington. Here’s a money quote:

Rupert Wyatt: This film is, what I hope and what I think the studio hopes, it’s laying the foundations for future films to come. I personally think what would be wonderful after this story is that the real conflict between humans and apes is told in this next film, because that’s what we’re setting up.

Todd Gilchrist of Box Office Magazine talked to Chu about the upcoming G.I. Joe sequel. The main takeaway from this is that the casting rumors about who was coming back or who wasn’t isn’t locked in stone. As he says, they’re just digging in:

Jon M. Chu: We just got the deal done, so now I get to get my hands dirty; this is the fun part, where we get to do pre-vis, to design characters, design worlds and literally the things I would create in my backyard.

Chu is in a different position than Wyatt. Wyatt came from independent cinema, so people don’t hold his older films against him, while Chu got a number of negative fanboy appraisals when he was hired on for this film because of his work on the Step Up franchise. It’s not fair to call either piece damage control, but both are smart to reach out to the press and establish not only their identities as filmmakers, but their perspectives on what they want to do. Both have taken on massive franchises that generate a lot of knee-jerk responses. Whether the films work or not is always the final arbiter.

Rachel Nichols Says Only a Few G.I. Joe Members Returning for Sequel

When will the new G.I. Joe movie start production? Who knows? But through various sources we’ve heard who will and won’t return for the follow up. A few weeks ago we learned that Byung-hun Lee would reprise his role as Storm Shadow, and actor Channing Tatum has expressed interest in once again playing team leader Duke. Co-star Rachel Nichols, who starred as Scarlett in the film has taken to Twitter to announce what characters will appear in the sequel and surprisingly, she’s not one of them!

“GI JOE 2 News Flash: The only characters to return in the JON CHU directed sequel will be SNAKE EYES, STORM SHADOW, and DUKE…”

This is an interesting post considering the actress has admitted that she hasn’t read the script for the sequel. She must have received a call straight from the studio saying that her services wouldn’t be needed. The screenplay for G.I. Joe 2 has been completed by scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and the studio recently hired Jon M. Chu to direct the film.

We find it strange that they would cut such core G.I. Joe team members as Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), Scarlett (Nichols), and even General Abernathy aka Hawk (Dennis Quaid). It also doesn’t make sense that [Spoilers for the first film] they set it up so Destro and “The Doctor” (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) would be the villains in the sequel only for them not to return.

If this is the true roster of characters for the next movie, we say: FAIL.

G.I. Joe 2 Script Complete, Still Looking At Directors

If you’re still awaiting news regarding the sequel to G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, we have some for you. The last time we checked, Paramount and Hasbro were hard at work looking at director candidates to replace Stephen Sommers. Thus far F. Gary Gray and Jon M. Chu have been named as possible front runners. Over at MTV, they spoke with Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner about the film and he gave a small update on the script and their search for the right helmer.

The screenplay for G.I. Joe 2 has been completed by scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. As for the contents of said script, Goldner revealed a little bit about what we can expect.

[Spoiler for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra]

“Obviously, we know coming out of the first film that the president is an impostor,” Goldner said of the sequel’s plot, “You might begin with the knowledge of having your president as an impostor. What would that mean? From that, you can tell a very big story without only having to rely on the chronology of the first film.”

But he also clarifies that if you haven’t seen the first movie, it won’t be a deal breaker to enjoy the sequel.

“There is a really great idea in the second ‘G.I. Joe,’” he said. “In many ways, it’ll be great for the people who saw the first one, but you don’t need to have studied every element of the first one to enjoy the second. We’ve made sure that that’s the case.”

F. Gary Gray, Jon M. Chu Contenders to Direct G.I. Joe 2

Last week the folks over at Latino Review, reported that F. Gary Gray and Jon M. Chu were on the shortlist to direct Paramount’s G.I. Joe sequel. Today, THR has followed up and confirmed their speculation. According to the trade the duo are definitely in the running to replace Stephen Sommers, who directed the previous film.

The studio has made the next G.I. Joe a high priority on their list of things to do. Producer “Lorenzo di Bonaventura has met with a number of directors in recent days, including Gray and Chu, while Paramount execs will commence their talks this week.” He wants production to begin by June so the film can be in theaters by 2012.

If you want our pick for the movie we say F. Gary Gray all day. Nothing against Chu but the first Joe was filled with corny and cheesy effects and dialogue, therefore we need someone who’s a little more grounded for the next one. Something about directing Step Up and Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never doesn’t give us the confidence we need in his abilities.

Lee Byung-hun’s Storm Shadow to Return in G.I. Joe 2

He’s back! Lee Byung-hun who starred as the ninja Storm Shadow in 2009′s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra will reprise his role for the sequel. According to THR, the casting news was revealed via the actor’s agency, which we find interesting. Why didn’t the studio (Paramount) release the info? Is this legit?

[Spoilers] If you saw Rise of Cobra, you know that Storm Shadow’s fate was sealed with a dramatic drop into a dark hole. He supposedly died at the end of a battle with his former peer Snake Eyes (Ray Park), making him one of the few casualties that the film had to offer. A lot of the other characters were seriously injured or mutilated but left alive.

G.I. Joe 2 is currently in development but no real details have been released regarding the plot. The studio hired Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen the screenplay for the follow up, which won’t be directed by Stephen Sommers. He unfortunately won’t be reprising his role with the film.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra grossed $302 million worldwide, which was more than enough to warrant a sequel. The film also had an open ending that alluded to a new villain.

Stephen Sommers NOT Directing G.I. Joe 2

The live action G.I. Joe franchise will be missing a familiar face when the sequel comes around according to the Los Angeles Times. Stephen Sommers, who helmed the first film, won’t return to direct the second one. This is a shock considering back in August it was confirmed that he was on board, along with the original cast.

The majority of the actors from the first film were contractually obligated to appear in future sequels, but Sommers didn’t have that same luxury. Apparently agents representing other directors claim that their clients have been approached to take over directing duties because Sommers won’t be behind the camera. Paramount refuses to comment on the situation.

The first movie grossed $302 million worldwide, which gave the studio enough of a reason to bankroll another installment. They hired Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen the screenplay for the follow up over a year ago, since then it’s been relatively quiet on the pre-production front.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra wasn’t groundbreaking in any way (read our review) but it wasn’t a boring embarrassment.

Viacom Promises Zoolander 2, G.I. Joe 2, and TMNT

Viacom has set some of our fears at ease with their latest announcement regarding their upcoming film slate. Do you remember all the talk of a revamped Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie we kept hearing about? Or the sequel to last year’s live action adaptation of G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra? Or the long awaited follow up to the cult favorite Zoolander?! News on all three has been scarce but the studio claims that the films are on their to-do list and we can expect them fairly soon.

Viacom COO Tom Dooley spoke at the company’s earning’s call today and revealed their plans for feature releases beyond next September. He noted that a new G.I. Joe movie is on the horizon and that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are hard at work on the screenplay for it. He also stated that the Jack Ryan reboot is on the way with Jack Bender directing.

Speaking of reboots, Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company are currently developing a screenplay from Art Marcum and Matt Holloway for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And finally for those of us who have been dealing with the back and forth, will they or won’t they, Zoolander 2, seems to be ago!

Justin Theroux is currently working on the screenplay for the film, which he plans to also direct. So get ready to see Zoolander and Hans strut their stuff again as the really, really, ridiculously good looking people they are.

Stephen Sommers to Direct G.I. Joe Sequel

Films from the summer of 2009 were filled with excessive explosions, horrible plots, bad acting, and that’s just the tip of the ice berg. When it comes to those qualities G.I. Joe had them all but unlike Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, it was still interesting to watch. The film ended up making a decent amount of money at the box office, earning a green light for a sequel. According to The Wrap, director Stephen Sommers will return to helm the follow up regardless of rumors that he’s on the outs with Paramount.

If anyone can handle cheesy special effects and bad dialogue it’s Stephen Sommers. He might not be David Fincher or Christopher Nolan but you have to admit he’s good at his “type of directing.” On the actor’s front, Channing Tatum is expected to reprise his role as Duke the leader of the G.I. Joe team, which means we’ve got another showstopping performance ahead of us (rolls eyes).

G.I. Joe 2 is currently in development but no real details have been released regarding the plot. The first movie was definitely pointless, popcorn fun but unless they come up with something really interesting, I might have to sit the sequel out. It’s more of a wait until it hits DVD type of film. No offense.

G.I. Joe Sequel Lands A Writer

For those of you who enjoyed your encounter with Stephen Sommer‘s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra last summer, there’s more to come. We all had a feeling that another Joe film would be in the works, but no official writer was attached to take on the project. But over at Collider, they’ve got word that a scribe has been hired for a new film, which means Paramount has every intention of moving along with the sequel.

UPDATE: Earlier today we reported that Paramount had hired a writer to pen the sequel to Rise of Cobra, but the writer’s name was never revealed. Now, IESB is reporting that the studio’s scribes of choice are Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Their the same guys who wrote the horror comedy Zombieland, and have recently been tapped to pen the upcoming Deadpool spin-off. They will definitely have their hands full in the new year.

According to their close source the studio has brought on a writer to “Go Joe” a second time, but they were unable to get their name. They wouldn’t budge on who’s been given the task, so it could be anybody’s guess. The Rise of Cobra was written by Stuart Beattie, but I doubt he’d have the time to return for the movie, because he’s busy prepping for his directorial debut, Tomorrow, When the World Began. The film is being placed on a scale with Twilight and Harry Potter so unless he had a second Joe script already written, his involvement sounds unlikely.

Even though G.I. Joe wasn’t a massive hit it managed to make a decent profit. Its saving grace came from its international gross, which pushed it over the 300 million dollar mark in box office sales. The budget for the film was 175 million and it only made 150 here in the states. Another sign of the times are the contractual obligations of the actors. If they do make a second film their all set to appear in sequels via their original deals.

Even though I’m not particularly thrilled about this sequel, the first film was still better than Wolverine. That’s right, I said it!

New DVD Releases: GI Joe, The Taking of Pelham 123, Will Ferrell

The slow roll of summer movies onto DVD continues this week as a trio of popcorn hits make their way onto store shelves with the release of GI Joe, The Taking of Pelham 123, and I Love You, Beth Cooper. There’s also a new doc, a Will Ferrell special, a new release of a Hitchcock classic, and the three worst DVDs of the week. What more could you ask for?

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra

GI Joe is probably the worst-reviewed movie ever prior to its release. No, it’s not actually the worst-reviewed movie. No, this statement has nothing to do with actual critics. It just has everything do with the perception of the film in the weeks before its August release.

Blogs were afire, conversations rampant with talk of how this will be “the worst movie ever made” and how massive a bomb and money loser it would be. Then the movie came out, and it was kind of fun, a bit noisy, but certainly nothing close to awful, and while it didn’t set the financial world on fire, it did make a healthy enough sum to merit a sequel.

So maybe it’s time to throw out your pre-disposed bias and buy this hit on DVD. It includes two featurettes and a director’s commentary.

The Taking of Pelham 123

Starring: John Travolta and Denzel Washington

This movie did come out this year. You probably don’t remember, but it’s true. It seems impossible now, but this film is a complete afterthought. Less than that, a non-thought.

Amazing when you consider that the entire month of June filled every single commercial break with the same exact trailer that simply called this movie, “Pelham 123″. This was the trailer that featured Denzel Washington telling his wife that he could only pick up a half-gallon of milk on his way home from a terrorist ransoming (because it’s easier to get a half-gallon) and John Travolta remarking that Denzel was both taller than he thought and good-looking.

The trailer played over and over again, beyond saturation. Maybe that’s why everyone forgot the movie so quickly? The preview was on so often that it became background noise and something of a reflex to tune out.

Either way, this movie does exist and you can buy it on DVD.

TV ON DVD

“Will Ferrell: You’re Welcome America. A Final Night with George W. Bush”

HBO is always very slow at releasing their DVDs (with wanting people to buy a subscription and all) but they’re usually worth the wait. This is not an exception – originally broadcast live from the theater in which Ferrell performed his massive hit of a one-man show, this is everything you liked about his SNL impression except with much dirtier jokes. Ah, the absence of network censors can be a beautiful thing.

More than that, Ferrell has been savaged recently for running out of funny. There isn’t a whole lot of evidence to support this (Step Brothers was immensely underrated). Basically, it’s just a negative reaction to Land of the Lost. Meanwhile, Ferrell was busy creating this gem that had a healthy run earlier in the summer.

So if anything, this is proof that Ferrell is still funny, and if you’re a believer, you should buy the DVD.

Command Performance

The Case to Vote for It: Here’s the plot of this movie: Dolph Lundgren plays a drummer in a rock band, opening in Moscow for the world’s biggest pop star but oops, the star, her backing band, and her family are taken hostage by terrorists. Rather than having security, or the police or anybody remotely qualified go after these terrorists, the band’s drummer (again, this is Dolph Lundgren) is ready to take them down. While this may sound bad in itself, bear in mind that Lundgren also wrote and directed this movie. Frightening.

Hardwired

The Case to Vote for It: It’s been a couple weeks here in the HSTDROTW section, but we finally have a vintage straight-to-DVD scenario: Two washed-up stars cashing a paycheck in some lame thriller. In Hardwired we have Val Kilmer and Cuba Gooding, Jr. caught on two sides of a microchip implant that has the former star monitoring the latter former star. Why? Who cares?

Sand Serpants

The Case to Vote for It: There’s no summary of this movie anywhere, so there’s no plot to make fun of, but the movie is called Sand Serpents so that’s probably enough. Plus the marquee star is somebody named Jason Gedrick. In other words, this movie is relying on somebody well below Jason Patric on the “Famous Jasons” scale.
