Joe: Retaliation trailer that shows things exploding, people running while seemingly coated in Crisco to replicate sweat, people shooting at various things, some sword fights on a mountain, and Bruce Willis shows up, shoots people, and smirks for a little bit. Oh, and The Rock glares at things and occasionally does that eyebrow cocking thing. Exciting?

How do you make a sequel to a modestly received blockbuster like the first G.I. Joe? One: you hired Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis for your action star bonafides. Two: You open your trailer and film by slaughtering the majority of the cast from the previous film. How does one deal with press? For both Jon M. Chu, and Rupert Wyatt, both are walking into a battlefield with their next films. For Jon M. Chu, he’s been signed on for the G.I. Joe sequel, but is known for his musicals, while Rupert Wyatt, he’s putting out a new Planet of the Apes film after the franchise has struggled to reboot itself. Both have offered themselves to the press to make their case for their films.

When will the new G.I. Joe movie start production? Who knows? But through various sources we’ve heard who will and won’t return for the follow up. A few weeks ago we learned that Byung-hun Lee would reprise his role as Storm Shadow, and actor Channing Tatum has expressed interest in once again playing team leader Duke. Co-star Rachel Nichols, who starred as Scarlett in the film has taken to Twitter to announce what characters will appear in the sequel and surprisingly, she’s not one of them!

The last time we checked, Paramount and Hasbro were hard at work looking at director candidates to replace Stephen Sommers. Thus far F. Gary Gray and Jon M. Chu have been named as possible front runners. Over at MTV, they spoke with Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner about the film and he gave a small update on the script and their search for the right helmer.

Last week the folks over at Latino Review, reported that F. Gary Gray and Jon M. Chu were on the shortlist to direct Paramount’s G.I. Joe sequel. Today, THR has followed up and confirmed their speculation. According to the trade the duo are definitely in the running to replace Stephen Sommers, who directed the previous film.

He’s back! Lee Byung-hun who starred as the ninja Storm Shadow in 2009′s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra will reprise his role for the sequel. According to THR, the casting news was revealed via the actor’s agency, which we find interesting. Why didn’t the studio (Paramount) release the info? Is this legit?

The live action G.I. Joe franchise will be missing a familiar face when the sequel comes around according to the Los Angeles Times. Stephen Sommers, who helmed the first film, won’t return to direct the second one. This is a shock considering back in August it was confirmed that he was on board, along with the original cast.

Viacom has set some of our fears at ease with their latest announcement regarding their upcoming film slate. Do you remember all the talk of a revamped Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie we kept hearing about? Or the sequel to last year’s live action adaptation of G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra? Or the long awaited follow up to the cult favorite Zoolander?! News on all three has been scarce but the studio claims that the films are on their to-do list and we can expect them fairly soon.
