For those of you who enjoyed your encounter with Stephen Sommer’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra last summer, there’s more to come. We all had a feeling that another Joe film would be in the works, but no official writer was attached to take on the project. But over at Collider, they’ve got word that a scribe has been hired for a new film, which means Paramount has every intention of moving along with the sequel.

The slow roll of summer movies onto DVD continues this week as a trio of popcorn hits make their way onto store shelves with the release of GI Joe, The Taking of Pelham 123, and I Love You, Beth Cooper. There’s also a new doc, a Will Ferrell special, a new release of a Hitchcock classic, and the three worst DVDs of the week. What more could you ask for?

Not even a complete 24 hours after G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra dominated this weekend’s box office, a follow up is already in the works. We previously heard rumors of a confirmed sequel, even though the film’s writer Stuart Beattie stated, “that’s a decision that will be made at least in the next few weeks after the film comes out.” A few weeks or a single day is more like it! According to the LATimes, Paramount is getting the ball rolling on the next film as we speak.

The bad news, you all went to the theaters to find out why they wouldn’t allow anyone to review G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra — it’s crap. Also, Funny People is dying out ten times faster than The Proposal even though it’s a far superior comedy. The good news, 500 Days of Summer has climbed it’s way onto the top ten! Since it’s release every week it’s become more and more loved at the box office and for good reason. Let’s keep the good stuff climbing!

I’m getting whiplash from all of these reviews and opinions about this weekend’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. As you may know, Paramount opted against screening the film for the press before it’s theatrical release. For the most part, the few critics who did see the movie thought it was a lot better than expected. Then I found an article on Rueters that seems to say the exact opposite! Just when you get a glimpse of hope for tshi film, it’s shot down by harsh reality.

If there was ever a week where we had movies for all types of people, this would be it. From your action big shot movie (Stephen Sommers‘ G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) to your romantic satire (Nicholas Jasenovec’s Paper Heart) to the suspense thriller (David Twohy’s A Perfect Getaway), you will find something for every mood. If you only saw one movie this weekend then it should be Nora Ephron’s film Julie and Julia starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. Ephron’s past hits alone, (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally) should be reason enough but if you need another reason, you should look up Streep’s resume.
Here are the movies coming out on August 7th:

The big G.I Joe debate has begun! All week the internet has been covering the story surrounding Paramount Studios’ refusal to show their latest film to critics.
