Not even a complete 24 hours after G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra dominated this weekend’s box office, a follow up is already in the works. We previously heard rumors of a confirmed sequel, even though the film’s writer Stuart Beattie stated, “that’s a decision that will be made at least in the next few weeks after the film comes out.” A few weeks or a single day is more like it! According to the LATimes, Paramount is getting the ball rolling on the next film as we speak.

G.I. Joe grossed over 56 million dollars domestically, with an additional 44 mil. from the foreign market. The numbers aren’t as big as some may have projected but the film still managed to generate over 100 million bucks its first week. The budget stands at 175 million, so if there’s not a significant drop in the following weeks Paramount can recoup it’s investment and make a nice little profit.

The studio’s vice chairman, Rob Moore, confirmed that a sequel will soon go into development. The film’s lead actors are contractually obligated to return for another film, though director Stephen Sommers is not.

So there is more Joe in the future with your favorite characters returning, but Stephen Sommers isn’t so lucky. I’m not sure what the underlying story is there, but it can be left to interpretation. There were rumors a while back about the director being fired during the production, which everyone adamantly denied. Either way, his status is up in the air at the moment, but we will definitely follow that story as it develops.

What do you think about a G.I. Joe sequel?

Should you go Joe? G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, is the live action adaptation of the beloved toy, cartoon, and comic book staple from Hasbro. It’s an origin story that features the most well known characters from the franchise which includes Duke, Ripcord, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Heavy Duty, Breaker, and General Hawk. Director Stephen Sommers laces the screen with nonstop action, paired with intertwined back stories and questionable motivations. So, should you check out G.I. Joe?

In the words of General Hawk, knowing is half the battle……

The Plot:

The entire plot revolves around chemical warfare. James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) aka Destro, is a prosperous weapons manufacturer who has created a new technology called “nano mites.” A case filled with four missiles containing the mites are put in the care of soldiers, Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) for immediate transport. Unfortunately Baroness (Sienna Miller) a leather wearing assassin figure, wants the case and will blow up a whole damn forest to get it. The majority of the film is spent with everyone chasing after the missile case to avoid the start of an all out nuclear war. You find out from various flashbacks that a lot of the good guys are closely connected to the bad guys, and in more ways than one.

The Good:

The Action: The action scenes were pretty impressive. One that sticks out in particular is the chase scene in Paris. Duke and Ripcord are running the streets of the city in their accelerator suits leaving nothing but destruction in their wake. Scarlett is close behind on a motorcycle, while Snake Eyes is riding the hood of a SUV, with cars being thrown at him!

Ray Park/Byung-Hun Lee: Park and Lee portray Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, two surrogate brothers with a murky past. Snake Eyes doesn’t speak or show his face through the entire film, but he dominates his scenes. Storm Shadow does speak, and when he does you listen. Lee pulled off a calm, calculated coolness with his character that lets you know he’s not to be messed with.

It’s Entertaining: Just because a movie has a lot of action doesn’t mean you’ll enjoy yourself (ahem Transformers Revenge of the Fallen). The film isn’t perfect by a long shot, but if it’s goal is to produce an adrenaline rush to the masses it does deliver.

The Bad

The Special Effects: A lot has been said about the visuals in this film, but they weren’t that great. Some scenes were brought down by the cartoonish look of the special effects. The film is CGI heavy, so the graphics department should have brought their A-game. Its not as bad as the look in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but its not that much better.

Channing Tatum/Dennis Quaid: Whoever said Dennis Quaid was set dressing in this film was absolutely right! His talent is wasted, and his part is a lot smaller than expected. Every line he delivers sounds as if he’s reading it right off the page. It’s a trait he shared with co-star Channing Tatum, who will never be Duke in my eyes. Neither of these men embodied their character’s spirits, and almost appeared as if they were bored onscreen. In any given scene, you can visibly see Quaid thinking about what he’ll eat for dinner that night.

The Campy Catchphrases: There’s nothing wrong with throwing in a couple of signature catch phrases to bring back nostalgia. But do we really have to hear, “Knowing is half the battle,” “Go Joe,” Real American heroes,” and “When others fail we don’t” back to back? It seemed so forced when the actors delivered those lines. Instead of it being a sly wink to the audience, it’s more like a punch in the face!

Overall:

G.I. Joe is nothing more and nothing less of what I expected it to be. It’s a popcorn movie through and through. I enjoyed the action, the comedic moments, and the trip down memory lane. For that alone I would recommend this movie, but if you’re expecting it to be a serious take on the beloved series don’t bother. G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra doesn’t take itself that seriously, and neither should you.

Rating: 7.5/10

I’m getting whiplash from all of these reviews and opinions about this weekend’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. As you may know, Paramount opted against screening the film for the press before it’s theatrical release. For the most part, the few critics who did see the movie thought it was a lot better than expected. Then I found an article on Rueters that seems to say the exact opposite! Just when you get a glimpse of hope for tshi film, it’s shot down by harsh reality.

Frank Scheck the author of the review entitled, “G.I. Joe Should be Court-martialed” implies that this movie is the brain dead blockbuster everyone expected it to be.

The latest action franchise seemingly designed to further spread the incidence of ADD among youth the world over, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” plays like a sequel to a film that was never made.

Ouch! In another not so surprising move, the writer critiques the cheesy dialogue and bad acting as the film’s primary faux pas. Interestingly enough I can stand by his dialogue statement. The few scenes I have watched had a major cornball factor to them. As for the casting, the only person I buy in their role oddly enough is Rachel Nichols. Maybe its the hair dye, who knows. Channing Tatum is not the Duke I knew and loved as a child.

Could it be that the critics who weren’t paid off by the studio are finally voicing their real opinions? The film is already in theaters so I don’t know how important it will be to movie goers at this point.

Do you think G.I. Joe will be as bad or good as everyone suggests?

GI Joe: Rise of Cobra hits theaters today and there is a lot of pressure for the film to deliver. It’s following in the footsteps of fellow Hasbro and Paramount champion Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. A lot of people have been making unfair comparisons between the two films due to their similar roots. They both have action figures, animated series, comic books, and now live action features to their credit. Therefore, when it comes down to content, characters, and pop culture status who has the upper hand?

If there was ever a week where we had movies for all types of people, this would be it. From your action big shot movie (Stephen Sommers‘ G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) to your romantic satire (Nicholas Jasenovec‘s Paper Heart) to the suspense thriller (David Twohy’s A Perfect Getaway), you will find something for every mood. If you only saw one movie this weekend then it should be Nora Ephron‘s film Julie and Julia starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. Ephron’s past hits alone, (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally) should be reason enough but if you need another reason, you should look up Streep’s resume.

Here are the movies coming out on August 7th:

This weekend, crowd’s will have the option to “Go Joe,” with the live action adaptation of the popular Hasbro toy line, G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra. Recently, I was lucky enough to interview the film’s screenwriter Stuart Beattie. He opened up about this feature as well as several high profile projects he has on the horizon, which include Halo, Tarzan, Tomorrow, When the War Began, and Spy Hunter just to name a few.

With so much ground to cover Beattie was eager to answer all my questions, check out the goods after the jump…

How long has the G.I. Joe movie been in the making?

Um, I’m not sure. They had several writers on several drafts for several years. I was called in around September of 2007. I was told to start from scratch basically. From that point on, it’s only been a year and a half. I think it was a long time in development, but when it actually got down to making the movie it went very fast.

You were brought on board after the massive success of another Hasbro based film, Transformers. Was there any extra pressure on you to really deliver with this script?

Sure, I mean I always feel pressure to deliver a script, that’s part of the job. The fact that it was such a huge property just tripled the pressure. Especially when the one they’d done before, [Transformers], had obviously been incredibly successful. So, yeah it was really stressful. Also, stressful because of the limited amount of time I had to come up with the story, to write the actual script. I only had about 6 weeks to come up with everything, write it out into a script, and make the green light. There was the time pressure, and also the bigger pressure of taking something like G.I. Joe and turning it into a film.

There are a lot of characters in the GI Joe universe, how did you decide which ones to put in the film?

It’s actually a two part process. The first part is, what are the core groups? What characters do you need to have to make it a G.I. Joe movie? Right off the bat, I knew I had to have Duke, Baroness, Destro, Cobra Commander, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Hawk. Just a certain core group of people, because without them it wouldn’t be G.I. Joe. That was the first part, then the second part was alright, now who else do I need in order to tell this narrative? I need Duke to have a best friend. Well, who’s the best character out of the G.I. Joe cannon that can pull off these things? Well, that’s Ripcord. You kind of start looking at the narrative and let the narrative dictate the rest of the characters.

One of the greatest mysteries surrounding this film is Cobra Commander. What can we expect from his character?

Well, the movie is the Rise of Cobra Commander, and how he came to be. In many ways its an origin story for a lot of the characters. I started kind of knowing that I couldn’t just start the movie with those people, the way that we know them in G.I. Joe lore. I had to introduce them as real people, and how they became those iconic figures. So for Cobra Commander, this is how he comes to be. He starts off as someone who’s not at all Cobra Commander, and you see what makes him that way.

How’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s portrayal of him? Does he bring his A-game?

I was on the set everyday and I saw it all being done, being created, and it was really, really great. He goes to some really cool places with it. I’m excited to see how other people will respond to it.

There’s been word that this is the first installment of a possible franchise. How many sequels will there be, and will you be on board?

I don’t know if anyone can say for sure if there will be a sequel right now. I think that’s a decision that will be made at least in the next few weeks after the film comes out. I would love to be a part of it, I’m actually directing a film down here [in Australia] so it’s more a question of availability. There are a lot more characters that I’d like to bring in. I’d love to be a part of it, so hopefully I’ll be able to get to it.

That’s right! You’re currently in Australia preparing for your directorial debut, Tomorrow, When the War Began. Can you tell me a little about that project?

It’s coming along very, very well. I just met with the author [John Marsden], and he loves the script. He’s given us his special blessing, and we’re on out way. We’re in week three of prep right now.

I know the Tomorrow series centers on a group of teenagers. Are you going for the PG or PG-13 audience with the film?

I’d say PG-13. It’s a war movie, so it’s real people getting shot. It’s not gonna be ‘R’ or anything, I don’t want it to go that far, but it will have real jeopardy. It will be very much a “real” ride.

Can you clarify your involvement with the developing Halo movie. Were you a part of the Peter Jackson, Neill Blomkamp collaboration?

No, I wasn’t involved at all with them. I was following it, just like everyone else was. I’d read in the papers like everyone else, about how it had fallen a part. It was really because of the writers strike that I came on, because after I’d finished G.I. Joe there was nothing to do. G.I. Joe was already in pre-production, and I thought well what am I gonna do? I always had an idea of how I think the Halo movie should be. I really just wrote it for me. I wrote it as an outline, then I thought I’d just add a little bit more. It became like a treatment, then a 50 page treatment (laughs), and then a script.

Do you think the film will ever get made?

I’ve been relentlessly at it for the last year and a half now, trying to convince Microsoft to make it, and trying to find a big filmmaker who wants to make it with us. I have a lot of hope for the Halo film, it’s not dead in my book. I won’t let it die. It’s too good to let go, I mean it’s our generation’s Star Wars. The whole thing is so cinematic, I just think it’s dying to be done. Anything I can do to be a part of it, to help get it going, I’ll do it.

What can you tell us about your involvement in the upcoming Jack Ryan movie, Without Remorse?

Without Remorse is actually about John Clark, it’s not a Jack Ryan book. John Clark is the C.I.A., shadowy figure that pops up in several Jack Ryan books. He’s in Clear and Present Danger, Sum of All Fears, and The Cardinal of the Kremlin. He’s actually kind of a side character that Tom Clancy took and gave a backstory on how he became John Clark. It’s my favorite Tom Clancy book. I had to update it [it takes place in the seventies], but I’m very proud of that script. You’ve got a highly trained KGB officer letting loose on the drug cartels in Washington D.C. on a personal vendetta. That’s how you get a name like Without Remorse. It’s pretty wild.

We’ve heard that Paramount is trying to revive the Jack Ryan franchise, and George Clooney is attached to star.

Uh, no I don’t have any involvement in the Jack Ryan stuff or any other books. I’d love to see the other books get made. It would be tricky to do The Cardinal of the Kremlin or Red Storm Rising now, because times have changed. But, I’m not involved in any of them, Without Remorse is over at Lionsgate I believe.

Can you tell me a little bit about the developing Tarzan project?

Yes, Tarzan’s over at Warners. They’re doing a remake of it right now. Hopefully, they make that movie. We all want to make that movie.

What about the live action version of the video game, Spy Hunter?

Yes, that’s also at Warner Brothers. I worked very closely with The Rock [Dwayne Johnson] on that. I think what we came up with is really, really cool. I know that he can nail that performance, and be launched as a huge action star.

How long has Spy Hunter been in development?

Oh, God. They’ve had writers on before me, but I came on to that about five years ago. Five or six years, I’d imagine. It is a big tent pole movie. It’ll cost a load of money, and they’ll need a big filmmaker to come on and do it.

What about the adaptation of Man Without a Gun?

Yeah, that’s a passion project of mine. It’s just tricky because it [takes place] in the Middle East. It’s events that transpired in the late eighties, early nineties. It’s hard to get things going right now, because all the recent movies about the Middle East haven’t performed as well as people would have liked. We just have to figure out how to make it. It’s a wonderful story, and a true story. It’s one of the very few positive stories to come out of the whole East versus West struggle. It’s a wonderful message, because it’s all about being in the Middle East….without a gun. It gives us a look at how this one guy did it, with just a pen and paper. It’s really an incredible story. I’d love to make that one day.

Thanks for your time!

Check out G.I. Joe in theaters this Friday!

The big G.I Joe debate has begun! All week the internet has been covering the story surrounding Paramount Studios’ refusal to show their latest film to critics. Joe: Rise of Cobra similar to their other Hasbro film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, others say it’s for the fans not the critics!

We already gave out our two cents on the matter, it’s time for you to voice your opinion!

What’s the big deal? Paramount has decided not to show any advanced screenings for this Friday’s anticipated blockbuster, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. According to Yahoo News, only a choice few from various websites and publications have seen the movie, which we highlighted in our GI Joe Early Review post. For the most part the critics were kind, so what gives? Why is the studio hiding one of the most anticipated tent pole projects of the summer?

The studio is giving us the patriotic act, in the literal sense. They’ve decided to focus on moviegoers who reside in the “heartland” of America. In other words, people who live outside of New York and Los Angeles. They’ve arranged several screenings for soldiers and heroes of war, such as the one they held last Friday for 1,000 military service members and their families at Andrews Air Force Base. Some people are speculating that this change in direction might have to do with the critical beating Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took over a month ago. Paramount vice-president Rob Moore says that there’s definitely a method to this madness.

“`G.I. Joe’ is a big, fun, summer event movie — one that we’ve seen audiences enjoy everywhere from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Phoenix, Ariz. After the chasm we experienced with `Transformers 2′ between the response of audiences and critics, we chose to forgo opening-day print and broadcast reviews as a strategy to promote `G.I. Joe.’ We want audiences to define this film.”

The Transformers comparison has been rearing it’s ugly head since day one. These are two Hasbro based films that are driven by special effects and futuristic technology. It sounds as if the studio wants to tap into the old school G.I Joe fan base to drive the flick to the top of the box office.

According to box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, They don’t need (to screen) it and there’s no upside to negative reviews. The film is going to open well no matter what,” Dergarabedian said. “They’re being very strategic in who they show the movie to. If they can win over their core audience from these reviews, that’s good for the movie.”

The film has a steady 80% rating on the Tomatometer via the Rotten Tomatoes website. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is clocking in with 20%. Obviously, Paramount is a bit shaken from their earlier blockbuster venture, even though they still made a ridiculous amount of money on it. Does this mean that studios do care if a film’s content is garbage? That’s crazy talk! Either way, G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra hits theaters this Friday, and you’ll be able to make that decision for yourself.

Do you think it’s a good idea for Paramount to keep critics away from G.I. Joe?

I’m kind of surprised at the reviews that have been released for this Friday’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. I haven’t been particularly excited to see the film, as many other people I know. Yet, something must be in the water, because a lot of the reviews I’ve read have been surprisingly……good! I’m not saying the movie is Citizen Kane, but it hasn’t rated as low as anticipated.

Check out some excerpts from the latest G.I. Joe reviews after the jump!

Here’s what some people had to say regarding the film’s questionable casting.

The casting worked 100% including Joseph Gordon Levitt and Sienna Miller who, based on early feedback, were the characters fans were most worried about. Ray Park as Snake Eyes was my favorite part of the movie. I swear I am going to get an Arashikage tattoo on my arm, he is so awesome. Some of the our readers chimed in early on regarding Marlon Wayans as Ripcord. Yes, I too cringed when that announcement was made. But guess what? He was great, his humor wasn’t over the top as it usually is plus he has one of the best lines of the film involving the famous G.I. Joe kung fu grip! [IESB]

There are perhaps just too many characters to take on board, but when it works well it’s spectacular. Sienna is cool and classy as the gun-toting Baroness, while Tatum has the square-jawed heroism to convince as the Duke. [Mirror.co.uk]

On the portrayal of technology in the film:

Now how “goofy” is the tech of the film? It really isn’t. As a geek, I read about as many military inventions and crazy tech as I can get my hands on. So their INVISIBLE SUIT – I read that story last year in the papers. The accelerator suits, the Army has absolutely been heading in that direction. Energy weapons? Yup, they’re working on it. So this NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE – I give it to them. And as any dog tag wearing JOE freak will attest, there’s so much tech that didn’t exist in just about every episode. That’s what I loved. [AICN]

The action sequences and special effects:

The action shifts from dense forests, to subterranean facilities, to the streets of France, to underwater bases, to high-altitude jet fights and a number of places in-between. The major sequences are both intense and sufficiently humorous, laden with eye-rolling, though faintly charming, one-liners and a speaker-shattering, non-stop barrage of explosions, chases, shoot-outs and sword fights. The action is well paced and the effects – much like the cinematography itself – blend the tangibly real and the colorfully cartoonish in a way that captures the spirit of G.I. Joe. [IGN]

The pacing:

GI Joe rarely pauses for anything so gauche as character development or real plot development. Hell – it barely pauses, period! From the film’s oddly historical prologue, the screen is either filled with brooding, scenery chewing, flashbacks or the kind of epic action set pieces normally reserved the ending of a James Bond film. In fact, that’s easily the best way to describe the film – imagine the climax of just about every Bond adventure, and then edit them all together into one hyperkinetic sequence. [AtomicMPC]

The Overall Verdict:

If your movie tastes run to guns, explosions, special effects, hunky soldiers, evil villains and beautiful women in super-tight outfits then look no further – GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra is for you! [Mirror.uk.co]

Bottom line it worked great. The cast looked great, the costumes looked good on screen, the weapons were awesome and the story moved along pretty smoothly without any major plot holes. There were enough references and cameos to keep die hard G.I. Joe fans happy. But if this film is your first encounter with the Joes, no worries, it did a great job introducing the core team to newbies. [IESB]

The bad buzz this film’s been generating all summer might fall on deaf ears. We’ll see what happens when G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra opens in theaters this Friday on August 7.

Do you think G.I. Joe will be better than expected this weekend?

Joe: Rise of Cobra" width="570" height="378" title="New International Trailer for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" />

The official international trailer for Stephen Sommers‘ (The Mummy, Van Helsing) new movie, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, was released today. The trailer is actually not too shabby. The movie could actually be an okay popcorn movie, which was more than I expected. Definitely bring your little sibling to this film, it has a lot of things blowing up in a cartoon-like way and people running around in crazy mechanical suits.

It’s hard to tell who’s who under all those rubber suits, but the film stars Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, and Sienna Miller.

Check out the trailer below…

The ending is actually pretty crazy and over-the-top, so I will give it points where it deserves them. Overall, it’s still got a lot to prove.

What do you think of the trailer?
