Can Nicolas Cage keep the Ghost Rider going? When the first film hit, it opened to $45 Million around the same weekend in 2007. But the film was not all that well received. And then there’s last weekend’s big winner The Vow. The Valentine’s day is over, but the film is a monster hit. One wonders if they can find a way to make a sequel. And then there’s This Means War - which after The Vow‘s showing, looks like it came to the dance without a date. Interesting times.

Hey, remember that video game series, Twisted Metal? You know the one. It featured “an underground event that pits a number of combatants in a fight to the death… outfitted in armored weaponized cars that are pimped out with heavy weaponry that includes missiles and machine guns” and features a muscular clown with flaming hair. Yep, that’s the one; and it’s a video game series that is super-necessarily being adapted into a film by one of the co-directors of cinematic masterwork, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

We’ve known for a while that Nicolas Cage would be returning to the role of Johnny Blaze in Sony’s Ghost Rider sequel, but today we’ve finally got some solid proof from the film’s set. Just yesterday we learned that Idris Elba has acquired a multi-picture deal with Marvel Studios. The actor has already finished his stint in next year’s Thor, and has been rumored to tackle Luke Cage or Blade next. But according to a new report from THR, Elba along with actor Johnny Whitworth have both been tapped to star in Sony’s upcoming sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Back in July it was confirmed that Nicolas Cage would return to play the title character in Sony’s Ghost Rider sequel. The last we checked Crank helmers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were on board to direct from a screenplay written by David S. Goyer. In terms of hype, Ghost Rider 2 doesn’t exactly have people waiting on pins and needles, an issue the studio might try to solve with 3D.

Why Nicolas Cage? Why?! If you were one of the many people who felt awkward watching Cage and his wig star in the 2007 adaptation Ghost Rider brace yourself because they’ll be back. A while ago it was announced that Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor would direct the sequel Ghost Rider 2 for Sony but at the time no confirmation had been given regarding the return of Cage. It looks like Sony’s going through with a sequel to Ghost Rider and there’s nothing we can do to stop them. Not only is the film still happening but according to THR, the studio is hiring not one, but two directors to helm it. Crank’s Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are in early talks to take on Ghost Rider 2, with Nicolas Cage expected to reprise his role as the hero.
