Uma Thurman Joins Playing the Field With Gerard Butler

Uma Thurman has joined the cast of the athletic, romantic comedy Playing the Field according to Variety. The film is headlined by Gerard Butler, and will feature the Scottish actor in a love triangle with Thurman and Jessica Biel. Yes, Jessica Biel! This is definitely an interesting trio don’t you think? Find out more about the movie…

Playing the Field centers on a professional soccer player (Butler) who decides to coach his son’s youth team. He uses the job as a way to bond with his son, but he ends up dodging the sexual advances of multiple soccer moms instead. The trade reports that Thurman will play the mother of one of the other children on the team, and Biel will star as Butler’s ex-wife. The film will be directed by Gabrielle Muccino.

We don’t have a problem with Thurman and Butler as potential partners in this movie, but Biel? She plays his ex-wife? We’re assuming that she’s also the mother of his son, so how old is this kid exactly? Did Biel’s character have him fresh out of high school? The age difference between the characters is a bit unnerving.

Gerard Butler Confirmed for How to Train Your Dragon 2

It’s no secret that a sequel to last year’s How To Train Your Dragon is on the way. The movie was a critical and commercial success that brought some positive attention to DreamWorks Animation who were in dire need of a good film. The Shrek franchise has more than worn out its welcome. Last fall they revealed that How to Train Your Dragon 2 would hit theaters in 2013, and that the majority of the cast would return. Everyone’s name was on the list except for the one and only Gerard Butler. We thought he was a strange omission, so we’re happy to report that he’s finally been confirmed for the sequel.

The casting news comes from Empire, who say that Butler was the last actor to sign on for the sequel. With his addition, the entire original cast will be on board. He’ll join the aforementioned Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, TJ Miller and Kristen Wiig.

The sequel is being made under the creative guidance of Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders, and Bonnie Arnold. It is written and directed by DeBlois and produced by Arnold. Once again based on the book series by Cressida Cowell, the sequel is executive produced by Sanders and DeBlois.

Gerard Butler and Antoine Fuqua Take on Afterburn

Gerard Butler is trying to get back into our good graces again by working on another comic book adaptation. According to Deadline, the actor has joined forces with director Antoine Fuqua to bring Afterburn, a Red 5 Comic title by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood to the big screen. This could be a perfect combination or a disaster waiting to happen. Check out the details below…

Afterburn is a science fiction tale that takes place “a year after a solar flare burns half the surface of a planet, and treasure hunters return to retrieve what’s left of value.” The screenplay will be adapted by Matt Johnson who previously wrote Into the Blue. We’re not sure how we feel about that on his resume but everybody deserves a second chance. The rewrite will be performed by Christian Gudegast who penned the Vin Diesel flick, A Man Apart. We don’t know if that’s a lot better but its something.

Butler just wrapped production on Machine Gun Preacher and is looking for something that will appeal to fan boys everywhere. What greater way to do that than to combine the comic and sci-fi genres? It’s a win-win situation as long as the script doesn’t suck.

Lionsgate Confirms Machine Gun Preacher with Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler will continue his assault on the action drama with his upcoming film, Machine Gun Preacher. The title makes it sound like a campy comic adaptation but its actually a fact-based drama. According to Deadline, Lionsgate has acquired the North American distribution rights to the film that will feature Butler in the starring role.

Machine Gun Preacher will be directed by Quantum of Solace helmer Marc Forster, and marks the second film he’s done with the studio after his Oscar winning, Monster’s Ball. The story centers on Reverend Sam Childers, who’s also known as the “machine gun preacher” as he gives up his reckless lifestyle in favor of spiritual enlightenment, which leads him to war-torn Africa where he becomes a warrior for the country’s children.

Co-starring as his wife is Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon will play his best friend, Kathy Baker appears as his mother, and Souleymane Sy Savane stars as his right-hand man. The film is scheduled to begin shooting in Detroit and South Africa on July 5th.

Machine Gun Preacher has a strong cast, a great director, and a good premise so all that’s left is the execution of the script. Here’s to hoping that Jason Keller’s screenplay is pitch perfect!

Early last year, it was announced that Ralph Fiennes would direct and star in a modern day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. Production began on the film early last spring and includes the acting talents of Gerard Butler, William Hurt, and Vanessa Redgrave. Several photos from the shoot have surfaced online and they have a Black Hawk Down /The Hurt Locker feel to them. Take a look and tell us what you think…

The original premise of Coriolanus centers on a Roman leader who faced a schism between the support of the Senate and the will of the plebeians. Citizens are angry at Coriolanus for withholding grain, but he earns a title as hero of Rome after facing down an army led by Tullus Aufidius (Butler). Upon his return to Rome, the mother of Coriolanus (Redgrave) encourages him to take a more active role in city politics. But his enemies push him into a rage, he rails against the idea of the plebeians having power, and is banished as a traitor. Coriolanus makes a deal with Aufidius to take revenge on Rome.

We’re not sure if they’ll translate the story directly from the book or if they’ll adapt it into modern English. For example, Baz Luhrmann’s rendition of Romeo + Juliet used the original Shakespearean dialogue in the script but everything else was present day. We wonder what route Fiennes will take?

Gerard Butler to Replace Crowe in A Star is Born?

We don’t know what’s worse, the fact that another remake of A Star is Born is in the works or that Gerard Butler might play the lead. According to a report in the LA Times, the long developing project has been rumored to have Russell Crowe as its headliner but the role might be given to Butler instead.

The basic premise of the film centers on a young naive ingenue who falls in love with an established male star, but while her career rises his begins to decline. Months ago, Crowe was rumored to takeover the male role that’s been previously played by Fredric March, James Mason, and Kris Kristofferson but no offer is on the table. And after the disappointing performance of Robin Hood last week, it doesn’t look like he’ll get one.

Butler has popped up as a candidate for the part and is no stranger to musicals. He appeared in the 2004 adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera opposite Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson. But the actor’s breakthrough role was in Warner Bros’ 300 and it looks like the studio might use A Star is Born to give his career a much needed boost.

If he lands the role he could star opposite Beyonce Knowles who’s been named as the front-runner to play the female lead. Honestly after The Ugly Truth and Bounty Hunter anything is better for Butler’s career right now.

Ralph Fiennes Corialanus First Set Photos

Ralph Fiennes directorial debut, if nothing else, is going to be interesting—the actor will be helming as well as starring in Coriolanus, a modern-day update of Shakespeare’s play of the same the name. Barry Ackroyd, cinematographer for both The Hurt Locker and Green Zone, will be lensing the adaptation, which originally centered on “a Roman general who attacked Rome after being exiled from the city.”

The film co-stars Gerard Butler (which doesn’t exactly make the film suck but if history has taught us anything, doesn’t help), Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox, and Jessica Chastain and is set in war-torn Serbia. /Film describes the plot:

“Coriolanus is a tragedy about the Roman leader Gaius Martius Coriolanus (Fiennes), a brilliant general who faced a schism between the support of the Senate and the will of the plebians. Got that? It’s sounds like somewhat of a gamble and updating Shakespeare has never been the surest of bets from the schlocky Romeo + Juliet to—God help us all—10 Things I Hate About You. That being said, Fiennes is a sharp actor, which hopefully makes his a great director.

How To Train Your Dragon: Movie Review

How to Train Your Dragon is an unconventional, epic tale about one of the unlikeliest heroes you’ll ever meet. It’s the latest big budget animated feature from DreamWorks and it’s directed by the guys who brought you 2002′s Lilo & Stitch. I walked into the film expecting it to be “just another animation” with nothing out of the ordinary that would warrant your time or money — but I was proved wrong. From the animation to the voice work it proved itself tenfold, focusing not only on special effects but most importantly the story.

The Plot:

How to Train Your Dragon centers on a teenage boy named Hiccup, the son of a very famous dragon slayer. After a sad attempt to catch a dragon on his own, he unexpectedly becomes the friend of one and nicknames him Toothless. He feeds him, takes care of him and eventually trains him to be his pet. Their relationship becomes the talk of the town and is the catalyst that changes the way humans see dragons forever.

The Good:

The Cast: The actors were all very well cast for the film. Gerard Butler was the perfect uber-masculine viking father and Jay Baruchel played his awkward teen son to a “T.” This was one of the rare occasions where “name” actors didn’t overshadow the animated characters they were playing.
The Animation: It was detailed, sharp, and extremely polished. There were certain scenes where the animation looked like live action because it was so well done. You could see the of hair standing up on the male character’s arms, and the scaly skin on the dragon’s nostrils.
The Story: On the surface, the story seems like something we’ve all seen and heard before. It shows two groups, in this case humans and dragons, killing each other over fear and lack of understanding. But somehow it finds a way to get you invested in the awkward friendship between Hiccup and Toothless despite the familiar circumstances.
The Humor: There are plenty of comedic moments that won’t go over the heads of children, or be too low brow for adults. A lot of the funniest bits actually come from the dragons themselves and their facial expressions and reactions to certain situations. Believe me, they’re not on screen just to be the bad guys, they bring the laughs.

The Bad:

The Accents: I’m well aware that this is a fantasy film, but why is it that the vikings in this movie have heavy Scottish accents, yet their children speak in an American dialect? That type of discrepancy got under my skin as an adult but I’m sure the kids watching won’t mind.

Overall:

With DreamWorks animated films you never know what you’re going to get, so How to Train Your Dragon was a welcomed surprise. It was entertaining, witty, and had heart which a lot of movies these days lack. The performances were wonderful, the animation was stellar and overall it was an enjoyable movie watching experience.

The Bounty Hunter: Movie Review

In their latest romantic comedy The Bounty Hunter, Jennifer Aniston is lovely and Gerald Butler is an immature 12-year-old trapped in the body of a middle-aged man. Aniston is one of the ladies in Hollywood who’s taken up more rom-coms than anyone else, while Butler is slowly dipping his feet into the genre — he’s already got two under his belt (P.S. I Love You and The Ugly Truth). Now the duo joins director Andy Tennant, who like Aniston, has plenty of experience in the realm of unconventional love backed by hilarious circumstances.

Find out if these veterans made a film worth watching…

The Plot:

Milo Boyd (Butler), a former cop turned bounty hunter is given the ‘gig’ of his dreams when he’s assigned to hunt down his ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurley (Aniston), after she skips court to work on a story. After very few attempts, Milo catches his ex-wife (mind you she does try to escape by running away in heels) only to find himself involved in some of her risky business. The two try to sabotage each other throughout until they find themselves on the run for their lives.

The Good:

Music: The music made this romantic thriller a bit enjoyable. There’s a wide variety of tunes in this film from Cage the Elephant to Ke$ha to Jerry Reed — whose song “She Got The Gold Mine (I Got The Shaft)” completely blew my mind.
Set Design: From the hotels to Nicole’s apartment, everything was so pleasing to look at. There was attractive wallpaper, pretty flowers, and extremely nice bedding. Usually I don’t pay too much attention to the set design the first time around, but in the case of The Bounty Hunter, observing the set was more interesting than observing the characters.
Supporting Actors: Jason Sudeikis plays an annoying yet likable character as Aniston’s co-worker Stewart, who happens to worship the ground she walks on. Despite the part he’s given, he manages to make you crack a smile. Peter Greene also gives a solid performance as Mahler (the bad guy). Ever since Pulp Fiction and The Mask, Greene has been acing the villain role, and this time he does it again.

The Bad:

Story: The story is very unoriginal — but then again, what can you expect from the guy who directed both Sweet Home Alabama and Fool’s Gold? There are so many questions involving the word ‘why’ that I want to ask. Here we have two great-looking and decent actors, but one lame romantic tale. I hate to say this but there really is no other way to put it: If you’ve seen Sweet Home Alabama, then you’ve seen Fool’s Gold and if you’ve seen Fool’s Gold, then you’ve seen The Bounty Hunter (it’s just set in and around Atlantic city). The problem with this story isn’t that it is completely fictitious, but that it’s annoying while being so fictitious.

Overall:

Good music, good design, and good acting don’t make up for a lousy story.

Rating: 3.5/10

Jennifer Aniston’s The Bounty Hunter Trailer

The trailer for the latest Jennifer Aniston film, The Bounty Hunter has hit the web. It’s the actresses 1,854th romantic comedy, co-stars Gerard Butler, and is directed by Andy Tennant, the same guy who brought you the Will Smith flick Hitch. After watching this trailer you’ll quickly realize there’s nothing romantic or comedic about this film…

The film centers on a bounty hunter (Butler) who’s hired to track down a woman who happens to be his ex-wife, as played by Jennifer Aniston. Aniston’s character is unaware that her ex wants to throw her in jail, which is where the hilarity and not so funny humor is supposed to ensue. After starring in The Ugly Truth, Butler continues to slide down a slippery slope of crappy movies that under perform at the box office. The Bounty Hunter doesn’t look like a step in the right direction for either of these actors.

At no point during this trailer did I laugh or even crack a smile. The entertainment value of this thing is nonexistent. See for yourself if The Bounty Hunter is all its cracked up to be.

New DVD Release: Up, The Ugly Truth, Sesame Street

Two major hits come out on DVD from two different ends of the spectrum. First, there’s the Pixar smash Up (maybe the best in that studio’s canon) and second there’s the crass bit of raunch The Ugly Truth. Meaning: There’s something for everybody!

Plus, there’s more kids classics in tow as “Seasame Street” celebrates its 40th anniversary with a retrospective set of the series’ best bits. All that, plus the three worst DVDs of the week!b Check it all out below…

Up

Here’s the truth about 3-D: It sucks. It’s terrible. It ruins movies and makes them worse.

That became true upon seeing Up. One of the best benefits to seeing a Pixar film (other than the always excellent stories and humor) is the vivid colors. The moving piece of digital art that shoots off the screen with an unmatched palette.

At least, it used to figuratively. Now it does literally, and you know what happens? The color suffers. The color doesn’t look nearly as vivid, the images not close to crystalline when viewed through the plastic shields of 3-D glasses.

This is supposed to not matter. Because the awe of 3-D is so overwhelming it wouldn’t matter if the movie was in Black and White. But that isn’t true. You get used to the 3-D by the time the second 3-D trailer has been aired, and by the time the feature starts, you just sort of expect it to be 3-D. It’s no longer a novelty or thrill, it just sort of is, and the gorgeous look of the film suffers for it.

So get this movie on DVD and be thankful you don’t have to suffer with the 3-D.

The Ugly Truth

Starring: Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler

This is what makes no sense about this sort of a romantic comedy – everybody who goes to see it knows precisely how it will end.

We know from the moment the trailer starts that Katherine Heigle and Gerard Butler will end up together. Despite their overwhelming differences and all logic saying that they won’t, everyone knows this is only way this film will end.

So why see it? Why go to a movie when you already know the ending? Isn’t the whole point of a movie to not know where it’s going? To be taken on a ride with an uncertain destination? Yet year after year people flock to movies where they already know the outcome.

So if you buy the DVD, pray it has an alternate ending Easter Egg.

Horrible Straight-To-DVD Release of the Week

The Accidental Husband

The Case to Vote for It: Okay, so there’s kind of a reason that this one went to DVD instead of coming out in theaters. It was supposed to come out, but suffered a pair of distributor bankruptcies that saw it holding its premiere at a Blockbuster. So maybe it’s a bit unfair to include the movie among the dregs of the film industry but it does have Uma Thurman, Colin Firth and Jeffrey Dean Morgan and nobody saw fit to try to put it out on the big screen.

It must be awful, correct?

American Virgin

The Case to Vote for It: Here is the plot of this movie: A girl who leads an abstinence group gets drunk one night at college and may or may not have had a little sex in her stupor. Unfortunately for her, denial isn’t an option as a sleazy filmmaker caught the whole thing on tape ‘Girls Gone Wild’-style. So now the girls in the group must go retrieve it. Kind of like Road Trip in that it’s almost a direct rip-off of that plot and probably sucks more. Oh, did I mention the sleazy videographer is played by Rob Schneider? Yikes.

The Christmas Clause

The Case to Vote for It: This week’s installment of the new category – “Terrible Christmas Movie Starring a D-Lister”. Last week it was Tom Arnold, this week it’s Lea Thompson as a busy lawyer whose family is draining her until she visits a mall Santa who grants her wish for a new life.

So it’s kind of like The Family Man in that it’s EXACTLY like the The Family Man.

Gerard Butler Cast in Coriolanus

It looks like Gerard Butler is going back to familiar territory with his next film. According to THR, the Scottish actor will be taking on the material that every thespian aspires to, Shakespeare. Butler has landed a gig in the film adaptation entitled, Coriolanus and will costar with several well known and established actors.

Coriolanus will be actor Ralph Fiennes directorial debut, and will have Butler starring opposite him in this contemporary update of the Shakespearean tale. In the film, Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army in the film that will also feature the likes of Vanessa Redgrave and William Hurt. Coriolanus will start shooting next March in Serbia, which sounds like the perfect place for a depressing war driven epic.

Since this film will be dated, and feature Butler once again as the leader of an army his wardrobe has to come into question. People aren’t expecting him to follow up his scantily clad ensemble from 300 with this film, but it would be an interesting sight. It will be nice to see the actor in a period piece again that takes him out of the American accent, which he’s used in the majority of his recent movies. He can pull off a European accent so much easier.
