New DVD Releases: Shutter Island, From Paris With Love, Curb Your Enthusiasm

If you like TV on DVD then this just might be your dream week. We have all sorts of huge shows hitting us with season-long box sets this week. We’re talking super huge. Like Urkel huge. Plus the entire series of a show that may or may not have a movie coming out based on it. I can’t be to sure, I don’t watch TV, or go to the movies, or go on websites, or look at billboards.

Plus, there’s a little movie by somebody named Martin Scorsese. Never heard of him, but I think the kid’s got promise.

Shutter Island

It’s time for a public service announcement. More a plea for my own sanity. Please, dear Movie Studio Marketing People, when you delay a movie’s release date. Please, for the love of all things good and just, make a new trailer!

Seriously, from basically August 2009 through February 2010, you couldn’t go to a movie without seeing the same Shutter Island preview. We got the same three lines, “For the criminally insane”, “Going somewhere?” and “You’re a rat in a maze,” on an endless loop for almost six months. This on the heels of The Soloist debacle.

What does this incessant playing of the same trailer do? Makes us NOT want to see the movie. By the time it comes out, we’ve already seen the movie for a full 90 minutes so actually seeing how the plot develops seems redundant.

So, seriously, next movie that gets pushed back from the fall to the next spring, please come back with a new trailer. (I’m looking at you, The Adjustment Bureau).

Of course, if you still want to watch this film, you can check it out on DVD. Though I imagine you won’t be watching the trailer on the special features.

“Curb Your Enthusiasm”: Complete Seventh Season

Is it just me, or was this last season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” just the tiniest bit underwhelming.

Firstly, the whole season was hyped as a “Seinfeld” reunion, and that only figured into about 25% of the season. Secondly, that 25% was the weakest part of that season.

It just seems like a strange strategy. Take your series extremely far out of its element to give us something we all want (the return of “Seinfeld”) and then not really deliver with any sort of gusto.

The strange thing – the rest of the season was great, as good as any the show has ever produced. Yet the whole season seemed weighed down by precisely what we thought would make it transcendent.

It’s a funny thing about expectations. They tend to ruin something that might be better than you’re ever allowed to realize.

So when you buy this DVD, do so with tempered “Seinfeld” expectations.

Movie Releases: Dear John, From Paris With Love, Terribly Happy

The two standout movies coming out this week are both love stories. The first is director Lasse Hallstrom’s adaptation of Nicholas Sparks‘ newest bestseller, Dear John. The man who wrote The Notebook, brings us the story a young soldier named John Tyree (Channing Tatum) and his one true love Savannah (Amanda Seyfried). The pair have good on screen chemistry and are not bad to look at. I definitely think this movie will be number 1 this week.

The other movie worth watching is Pierre Morel‘s film From Paris With Love. This isn’t a love story in the traditional sense, although it is about the love one man has for action. It stars John Travolta as a bad ass Agent and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

From Paris With Love surprised me in many ways. Initially, the thought of John Travolta doing a slightly different version of his character from The Taking of Pelham 123, just didn’t appeal to me. I walked in expecting to laugh and cringe at how horrible it was, but soon discovered that it wasn’t as bad as I thought. It’s not an epic action film that leaves a mark on your life like the first Die Hard, but it has its moments. So, laughter – yes, cringing – minimal.

James Reese (Meyers) is a personal aide to the US Ambassador in France with a side job helping the CIA clean up messes by changing license plates on cars, low level stuff. He is also in love with a beautiful French woman (Smutniak) who proposes to him the night he is given the opportunity he has been waiting for, the chance to become a bonafide secret agent. This is where we meet his new partner, FBI Agent Charlie Wax (Travolta). Wax is a wildman. He doesn’t follow protocol and gets things done in his own way. Reese is uncomfortable. He’s not a man of action. He is a thinker. He likes chess. He can’t call his fiancé because his phone is out of batteries.

Overall:

I was on the edge of my seat and smiling for most of the movie, loving the little homages to Travolta’s character in Pulp Fiction. It was also great that every time there was an opportunity to break some glass, they made it happen. If you want to see a movie that’s not top of the line, but partially entertaining, this is it. Because even though it’s not groundbreaking, I still enjoyed myself.

Rating: 7/10

Yesterday we brought you news that Pierre Morel had been tapped to take on the big screen remake of the sci-fi property Dune, and now a new trailer has been released for his latest film. From Paris With Love stars a very bald John Travolta and a confused Jonathan Rhys Meyers, in an action ode to the eighties. On the surface the movie doesn’t look any different from what we’re used to seeing, but this trailer tries to set it apart.

From Paris With Love centers on a low ranking intelligence officer (Meyers) working in France at the U.S. Ambassador’s office. He bites off more than he can chew when he’s paired up with a high ranking, wise-cracking, over the top senior agent, who is played by an over the top John Travolta.

I like senseless violence from time to time, but this movie tries too hard to be in your face with it. Correction, John Travolta tries too hard to be in your face. The actor is selling his character as a ticking time bomb, with his Tony Stark goatee, and gold hoop earring. Sometimes subtlety is your friend John.

Amongst all the films that get thrown at us every year it’s hard to remember who’s coming out with what and when. Case and point, did it slip anyone elses mind that John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers‘ film, From Paris With Love was still a pending release? Apparently it’s still going strong and over at CraveOnline, they’ve got two new posters from the film that features both actors doing their best bad ass imitations.

From Paris With Love is directed by Pierre Morel and centers on a low-ranking intelligence operative (Meyers) working in the office of the U.S. Ambassador in France takes on more than he bargained for when he partners with a wisecracking, fast-shooting, high-ranking U.S. agent (Travolta) who’s been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack.

The plot sounds like the outline to any and every buddy cop movie from the 1980′s, but somehow this movie thinks it can be different. It really sucks how Jonathan Rhys Meyers keeps getting offered these types of roles, he’s so much better than this. He is ridiculously talented, tune in to an episode of The Tudors and you’ll see what I mean. As for Travolta, apparently this movie was filmed around the same time as The Taking of Pelham 123. Here’s to hoping it doesn’t share the same fate.

Here’s a profanity laced look at the upcoming action film, From Paris With Love. We brought you a teaser trailer a while back, and now here’s the red band version to feed your appetite for senseless violence. The film centers on a low ranking intelligence officer (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) working in France at the U.S. Ambassador’s office. He bites off more than he can chew when he’s paired up with a high ranking, wise-cracking, over the top senior agent, who is played by a very bald John Travolta.

Watch the bullets, violence, and mayhem ensue…

This film scares me, and not because of the violence. It looks like both John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are trying too hard in their roles. It’s almost cartoonish in a way. The fact that Travolta’s character is called Wax, doesn’t help matters either. From Paris With Love is directed by Pierre Morel and will hit theaters on February 5, 2010.

I’m convinced Travolta filmed this film back to back with The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3. He’s obviously doing the same character in both movies physically and mentally.

I’m not sure if it’s because this is the international trailer or what, but trailer feels straight out of the 90′s. To me it feels like watching Die Hard with a bald John Travolta instead of Bruce Willis. Somehow I doubt these are the best moments from the film, but if they are, run don’t walk from this movie, because it’s going to get pummeled…

You have to compare it to Die Hard…
