piratesofthecaribean5 17 11 ScreenCraves Top 10 Worst Films and Trends of 2011

With year-end worst of lists, it’s rarely fun to pick on films that are dead and buried. Is it really worth rehashing why I Am Number Four or Apollo 18 are bad movies?  In five years no one’s going to remember those films, to say nothing of Shark Night or One Day. in fact it’s likely everyone’s forgotten them. What’s much more disappointing and terrible is cinematic good will squandered. And so here is our list of the ten worst films and trends in cinema in 2011:

the help emma stone la 8 21 111 Weekend Box Office: Spy Kids and Conan Are No Match For The Help

The Help had a busy weekend. After being overshadowed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Help came back strong and claimed the No. 1 spot in its second week, as we predicted. In that time, the $25 million budget film has managed to pull in a grand $71.8 million. But the success of one film, means the lack of to another (or, in this case, others). This weekend all debuts flopped. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World landed third and grossed $12 million. Lionsgate blockbuster Conan the Barbarian (the film has a $90 million budget) barely managed to scoop in $10 million. Also new were Fright Night and One Day – both landed in the bottom half of the top 10. Take a look at the numbers…

Box Office Predictions: It’s a Fright Night for New Releases

SK4 10789 R1 Box Office Predictions: Its a Fright Night for New Releases

It’s the dog days of summer. This weekend four movies are coming out and – realistically – only one has a shot at taking the top slot. Last weekend saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes hold well enough to fend off The Help, but this weekend it’s more than likely that The Help will take the top slot. Conan the Barbarian, Fright Night, Spy Kids 4, and One Day are all going wide with only One Day not in 3-D. With Final Destination 5 underperforming, and an audience wary of 3-D (in general), we’ve seen studios beg off 3-D for some of their event films, but with international numbers of Pirates of the Carribean 4 propelling the film to an over billion dollar gross, you can’t count out the third dimension just yet.

FF 001 Interview: Colin Farrell and Director Craig Gillespie on Fright Night

Colin Farrell has been in the spotlight so long he’s grown to accept his role, and he has developed a playful disregard for anything resembling decorum. Farrell strolled into our room wearing a button-up with only one button buttoned, giving him the causal look of someone looking for a suntan, or a Jim Morrison-esque Lizard King. He was joined by director Craig Gillespie to talk about Fright Night, and how they approached the material, and their reverence for the original (or lack thereof). Check it out.

Fright Night 4 7 11DH New Fright Night Trailer Offers New Moves

The first trailer for the remake of Fright Night (and much of the early material) focused on Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell. Yelchin plays teenager Charlie Brewster, who thinks his next door neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Farrell) is a vampire. What it didn’t do is spotlight much of Evil Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) or Peter Vincent (David Tenant), two of the most memorable characters from the original. Now there’s a new trailer, and Evil Ed and Peter Vincent finally make their bows. Check it out.

The Fright Night remake is due August 19, and the first official images from the film are now online. The film stars Anton Yelchin as Charlie Brewster, who has a vampire (Colin Farrell) move in next door. The Craig Gillespie-directed remake tones down some of the sexual subtext of the original, which is part of the reason why the film still plays well, but the new spin on the material has yet to be revealed. The film also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Imogen Poots. Check out the stills…

David Tennant Fright Night 2 8 10 Sneak Peek at David Tennant in Fright Night

It’s no secret that DreamWorks is producing a remake of the 1985 horror film Fright Night. The film debuted in theaters 25 years ago, which means they’ll have to make some changes to update it for modern audiences. For example, do you remember the late night horror TV host Peter Vincent? He was originally played by Roddy McDowell but in the remake David Tennant will take over his duties. We’ve got the first glimpse of the actor in full costume and makeup as Vincent, and he’s fairly unrecognizable. Check out the photo below…
