With the release of Scream 4, this weekend we will surely see some debate about what are the best and worst Scream sequels. In the scheme of things, Scream only has four movies, which in a horror franchise is small potatoes – if a horror film works it usually gets a numbers of sequels and nowadays reboots (and sometimes sequels or prequels to those). For those that think this is something new, just look at the old Universal monster movies. They were made until the well ran dry and then they appeared with Abbot and Costello. But what’s the worst of the more recent sequel-crazy horror films? Take a look…

Today is the day that a lot of people dread, it’s Friday, the 13th (cue the suspenseful music)! It doesn’t mean much if you’re not superstitious but it can rattle your bones if you’re a fan of the horror genre. One of the most famous films associated with the special day bears the same name and centers on an almost supernatural masked killer named Jason Voorhees, or as he’s known in the streets — Jason. Remember all the sequel talk that sprung up last year after the ridiculous success of the Platinum Dunes reboot of Friday the 13th? Warner Bros originally announced back in October that they had plans to produce a follow up simply entitled, Part 2 that would pick up directly where the first one left off. Now six months later Brad Fuller, one of the film’s producers is saying that the movie is a no-go. Who should we believe?

The idea of a remake having a sequel is a confusing concept, Halloween II is a prime example of that, but Warner Bros has taken it a step further. We’ve known for months that Friday the 13th would have a follow up due to its immense success earlier this year. According to Bloody Disgusting, the studio has announced the official release date for the film’s sequel as well as the title, Friday the 13th: Part 2.

As a die-hard horror fan, I feel I have the right to say that Friday the 13th has never been a particularly intellectual series. It is has never made chronological sense, nor tried to explain how Jason mysteriously transformed from a drowning 10-year-old boy into a hulking, deformed indestructible killer. But that’s okay. Audiences (for some reason) accept this and enjoy the series for what it is – cheap thrills, kills, and boobies. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy these things as much as the next gore hound. But after number 5, I tune out. Read on, dear reader, and find out why…

Thanks a lot, everybody. By making Friday the 13th a record breaking number one hit a sequel is already in the works.
