‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’ Now Has An Official Release Date

After seven years of promising a sequel to Sin City, the live action adaptation of the Frank Miller comic, Robert Rodriguez recently announced that the long-awaited follow-up has finally moved from film festival talking point to actual film production. Since then, news of returning cast members (see below), as well as a few fresh faces, has been released from the Rodriguez camp. Now, you can add one more thing to the list—the sequel has an official release date

One more confirmation that Rodriguez isn’t just talking off the top of his head this time: Dimension Films has given Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For an official release date of October 4, 2013 via a press release. The PR salvo also notes that Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba will be reprising their roles from the original film, and that the sequel will be scripted by co-directors Rodriguez and Miller, as well as William Monahan (who previously scored an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Departed).

So, what does this all mean? Well, we can probably assume that Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is now officially out of the Films I Swear That I’m Totally Making Whenever They’re Discussed At Film Festivals And Then I Never Mention Again pile that Rodriguez constantly seems to be carrying with him. Here’s hoping he doesn’t change his mind.

Robert Rodriguez Officially Starting Production On ‘Sin City 2,’ Wants Mel Gibson For ‘Machete Kills’

A sequel to 2005’s Sin City has been rumored and in discussion for so long it’s become a kind of urban legend—the kind of thing that people always talk about (especially director Robert Rodriquez and Sin City creator Frank Miller), but everyone knows would never really happen. Well, that appears to no longer be the case, as Dimension Films has sent out an official press release declaring that Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is officially in pre-production.

It’s something of a surprise that Rodriguez is actually committing to the sequel, as he seems to always have 3-4 fantasy projects that never come to fruition going at once, with Sin City 2 always being the crown jewel in that roster. But hey—if this keeps Rodriguez from making another Spy Kids film, I’m game. Check out the press release below:

ROBERT RODRIGUEZ AND FRANK MILLER TO BEGIN PRODUCTION ON THEIR MUCH ANTICIPATED SEQUEL TO 2005‘S SIN CITY ENTITLED “FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR”

Robert Rodriguez’s Quick Draw Productions and Alexander Rodnyansky’s AR Films partner with Dimension Films on historic sequel

AUSTIN, TX (12 April 2012) — Filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, along with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, have announced that production will commence on the highly anticipated sequel to 2005’s Sin City, entitled Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The film will be produced by AR Films and Quick Draw Productions, financed through AR Films U.S and released domestically by Dimension Films.

“The first question I am always asked is “When will you make another Sin City? ,” said Rodriquez. “I have wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. A Dame To Kill For will certainly be worth the wait.”

Sin City creator, screenwriter and co-director Frank Miller said, “The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything like it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first.“

The script and details of the film’s story have been kept tightly under wraps. Casting will begin next week, with many of the original cast expected to return. The film, a Quick Draw Production, will be produced by Rodriguez and producing partners Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic; and by Alexander Rodnyansky and Sergei Bespalov and Stephen L’Hereux. Miller, The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Miramax’s Adam Fields will act as executive producers. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Frank Miller and Academy Award winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film is expected to begin production this summer at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

In other Rodriguez news, the multi-tasking filmmaker is also set to film Machete Kills, the sequel to the 2010 film (and Grindhouse spin-off) Machete. While the original film featured such stunt casting as Robert De Niro and Lindsay Lohan, it looks like Rodriquez is now gunning for Mel Gibson and Michelle Williams for the sequel.

Gibson’s career is in desperate need of some kind of public approval/acceptance, especially after starring in such underperformers as Edge of Darkness and The Beaver, and following the actor being publicly drummed out of a cameo in The Hangover II. Williams is in no need of such a boost—honestly, it would be a bigger shock to see her in Machete Kills rather than Gibson.

Frank Miller’s Full Gucci Guilty Commercial

Last week, a teaser was released for Frank Miller’s latest project — a commercial. It’s not just any commercial, it’s an advertisement for a new fragrance called Gucci Guilty and stars Evan Rachel Wood and Captain America himself Chris Evans. The preview footage we saw made us feel like the actual ad was going to deliver, too bad it’s pretty much the same old, same old with some extra love-making scenes in between. Check out the full video below…

That was a bit underwhelming. The commercial is actually the same length as the teaser trailer. They both clock in at 32 seconds. How does that work exactly? Wood is captivating throughout that short period of time and it’s kind of cool seeing her man-handle Evans. The color scheme and the overall style of this commercial fully represents Miller’s filmmaking aesthetic.

I won’t say that this ad makes me want to go out and buy a bottle of Gucci Guilty but I wouldn’t mind taking a whiff just to see what all the fuss is about.

P.S. this commercial was originally set to debut during the MTV Video Music Awards next month.

Love them or hate them, every once in a while a posh fashion or perfume designer decides to use Hollywood’s hottest actors to star in an overly cinematic commercial. It’s been done with Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, and this time it’s Evan Rachel Wood. She along with Chris Evans appear in a new ad for the fragrance Gucci Guilty, which is directed by Frank Miller (Sin City, The Spirit). The teaser trailer for the commercial has been released – yes it has a teaser and you can watch below…

This commercial definitely has Frank Miller written all over it. There’s so much Sin City and The Spirit pushed into this that it’s borderline ridiculous. Other than the obvious homages, stylistically it’s beautiful. The contrast of Woods flaming hair against the stark gray background works miracles for the overall theme.

As for Chris Evans, doesn’t he look like Lucas Lee from Scott Pilgrim vs The World in this video? That’s our Captain America right there folks.

The full length commercial will air during the MTV Music Video Awards on September 12th.

Frank Miller Moving Forward With 300 Prequel

Everyone who enjoyed the 2006 film 300, let out a big “Why?!” Rumors have been swirling for years that a sequel to the movie that made Gerard Butler a star would hit the screen sometime soon. According to the Los Angeles Times, comic author Frank Miller has been working on another movie, but it’s a prequel. He’s formulated the story, and already has a title for the film.

After 300 ended its run in theaters, it accumulated over 450 million dollars worldwide. What studio wouldn’t want to repeat that kind of success? Logically a sequel wouldn’t make sense because of the outcome of the film, but Miller found his loophole through a prequel. When he spoke to the LATimes, he dropped a bomb that the new film will be entitled, Xerxes after the Rodrigo Santoro villain in the original.

“It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens,” Miller said Wednesday. “I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.”

Speaking of lens, he went on to reveal that Zack Snyder has interest in returning to the franchise and taking on the prequel. It sounds like Miller is obsessed with Greco-Roman/Mediterranean culture, and in a way he admitted it.

“Every generation returns to ancient Greece because, well, the stories are so damn good. The fact and the myth are inseparable and, believe me, when you go sailing for a while in the Aegean Sea, you start believing in Poseidon.”

Do you know what I’d love to believe in again? Real filmmaking. Why do we have to tack on more to this movie when it’s obviously not needed? 300 was a perfect stand alone project that doesn’t need an excessive backstory to fuel more films.

Sylvain White Talks Frank Miller’s Ronin

Similar to Jeffrey Dean Morgan, director Sylvain White has also been bitten by the comic book bug. How do you go from Stomp the Yard to The Losers, over to Ronin? I’m not talking about the Robert De Niro drama from the nineties, but the Frank Miller comic. According to Superherohype, White has his eye on the property and wants to adapt it for the big screen. Here’s an update on the film’s status as well as some back story on the title character.

“It’s still being developed,” an eager White told SuperHeroHype.com, “I just got a new draft a week ago. It’s looking really good and promising. I hope it gets to go… [Mine is] a big-budget, big blockbuster take on it. I’d love to do it in 3D. I think it’d be ridiculous and amazing.”

Who or what is Ronin? He is the main character in a DC Comics series that ran for one year from 1983 to 1984. He’s a reincarnated man who’s gearing up for a final showdown with the soul of the man who killed his mentor. The story “blends feudal Japan with a darkly futuristic, cyberpunk New York city.”

White also went on to talk about the visual quality of the the comic and how it could transfer over to film.

Replicating frames… that’s a different language. You want to always stay true to the graphic novel, but you’re watching a different medium. You never want to remind the audience that they’re watching a graphic novel or [an adaptation of] a graphic novel source. You just want them to watch a great movie. And if they know it’s based on a graphic novel, awesome. And if you make the fans happy because you paid good tribute to the source material, awesome. I don’t think you make fans happy by just replicating frames. What they want to see is that you stayed true to the story, true to the characters and true to the design.”

We’ve all heard this kind of talk from directors before, regarding the comic’s source material. “Respecting the fans” is always a big thing to throw out into the universe as well, but it doesn’t always happen. Since Ronin isn’t as well known as a lot of other comic characters I’m sure that will give him the opportunity to have a little more freedom with the story.

He could easily get put into that weird position that Zack Snyder was in after he directed Watchmen. It was a movie made for fans, understood by fans, and to hell with everyone else. Which route do you think he’ll take?

Robert Rodriguez Sets Sin City 2 in Motion

Sin City reminds me of an absentee parent who always promises to come around but never does. Ever since the original film was released in 2005 there’s been talk of a sequel. Fast forward to four years later and we still don’t have one. Fans have been waiting patiently to no avail, but director Robert Rodriguez continues to reassure the public that the movie is “on it’s way.” According to Screenrant, Rodriguez gave a recent interview where he exclusively discussed the progress of Sin City 2.

According to Rodriguez a sequel is in the works and he’s trying to take steps to make it happen. Unfortunately, his busy schedule has a way of interfering with the development process.

I actually had a phone call with some of the players in it today, but I was on a plane so I missed it… So next week we’re going to talk about it some more and get a timing on when we’d be doing it. But there’s a lot of people who are interested in it… We are definitely going to do that one.”

He also gave some insight into what stories from the Frank Miller novel will be featured this time around. The director definitely has his eye on “A Dame to Kill For” as well as a couple of others.

“There’s a lot of stories,” Rodriguez said. “That was sort of the approach I took to it. That’s why there’s three stories in the [first] movie, because I thought, ‘I love this material, but gosh, what happens if it’s not successful and I don’t get to make a part two and part three. I still want to see “The Big Fat Kill” and “That Yellow Bastard.”‘ So I wanted to put them all in one movie so I could at least get some of these stories out of my system. But there’s still so many books and so many stories to do.”

If and when this movie happens, I wonder if they will still go with Angelina Jolie for the lead in “A Dame to Kill For?” She’s been in talks to star in the film for years, but they continue to get backtracked. I was a fan of the first Sin City, but I know a choice few who weren’t. I’m interested in seeing more stories told on the big screen especially “That Yellow Bastard.” Even though I’m happy to hear some movement on this, I won’t put all my eggs in once basket. Rodriguez has a lot on his plate including his reboots of Predator and Red Sonja. When will he find the time to do it?

Angelina Jolie Back in for Sin City Sequel?

Sin City 2 has been on the back burner for a few years, but lately there have been hints of progression. We heard that Frank Miller has finished the second draft of the screenplay, via co-stars Rosario Dawson and Jamie King, and the production could start anytime from this spring to next year. The biggest casting rumor that’s been surrounding the film concerns Academy Award winning actress, Angelina Jolie. She has been “attached” to star in the movie for a while, but she’s never commented on any definite involvement. Yet, as of late the developing sequel has been gaining momentum, and Jolie’s name has once again popped up as it’s possible star.

Over at Moviehole, they have an exclusive from a high powered producer who’s on the inside of the Sin City fold. From their source they hear that Jolie has resumed talks to star in the film, which makes her rumored attachment more than just a possibility. The actress first spoke to Miller and director Robert Rodriguez about the film three years ago in 2006, but the project went cold and nothing materialize. Now according to their insider Jolie is back in the loop to star as the lead in the “A Dame to Kill For” story.

Jolie would star as Ava, the girlfriend of Clive Owen’s character Dwight McCarthy. She shows up and professes her love for him, and brings a lot of trouble along with her. This film would reunite Jolie and Owen who previously starred in the drama Beyond Borders together. Owen is “loosely” attached to reprise his role, but if everything comes to fruition they would be the on screen team to beat.

I must admit if Jolie does sign on for Sin City 2, she’d fit perfectly with the film’s canvas. She’s already proved that she can balance action along with sex appeal, so she’s knocking out two birds with one stone.

The Spirit will be hitting theaters Christmas Day. The film has already been receiving a lot of slack for it’s cheese factor. Although one thing is for damn sure. Frank Miller wanted some damn fine ladies to play the roles in the film and he sure as hell got them.

After the first Spirit trailer came out (view here), I got a bit worried. It’s nice to mix action with cheesy, but there’s a fine line that not everyone can walk. The new trailer is more like a music video with action, than an action movie with music. It’s not often that the second trailer is shorter than the first, but hey! It’s better!

Spike TV’s Scream Awards Honors Burton, Craven And More

It was a no doubt memorable and terrifying night at Spike TV’s third annual Scream Awards at the Greek Theatre, which honors the best in the horror, science fiction and fantasy genres, as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Wes Craven and Tim Burton were honored and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Night,” swept 12 awards throughout the evening, including the the trophy for most coveted category, “Ultimate Scream.” Scenes from much anticipated releases “Friday the 13th,” “Watchmen” and “Twilight” saw their world premieres at the event as well.

Sir Anthony Hopkins received the “Legend Award,” while Tim Burton, who descended down to the stage in a hot-air balloon took home the “Scream Immortal Award” for his unique interpretation of horror and fantasy. Horror legend Wes Craven swept the “Scream Mastermind Award” for his contribution to the world of horror. The late Heath Ledger was also honored as he took away “Best Fantasy Actor” and “Best Villain.”

In perhaps the most surprising twist of the night, Star Wars creator George Lucas appeared at the awards to collect the “Comic-Con Icon Award” along with an entire army of Stormtroopers. The award, which is given in association with Comic-Con International, has previously been awarded to Frank Miller and “The Spirit” director Neil Gaiman.

In a world of run of the will award shows, the Scream Awards definitely win in the category of originality, presenting such awards as “Most Memorable Mutilation,” “Holy S*** Scene of the Year” and “Best Line.” This year, the mutilation honor went to “Teeth,” as The Dark Night owned the scene of the year and best line.

Though only in its third year, the show attracted such big names as Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Winona Ryder, Kate Beckinsale, Milla Jovovich, Kevin Smith and Liv Tyler. Comicbook legends Stan Lee and Frank Miller were also in attendance.

The two hour show featured performances by Smashing Pumpkins, who performed their single “G.L.O.W.,” and new and upcoming artist Kerli.

Also, some other fun highlights. Robert Downey Jr. accepts his award…
