- The Walking Dead logged 7.3 million viewers last night for AMC’s zombie show. That’s the highest rated basic cable in the history of basic cable, says Variety. Word has been somewhat mixed on the pilot (we reviewed it), but the Halloween timing and these ratings assure a third season.

- Speaking of renewals, Sons of Anarchy has been given the greenlight for a fifth season.

Did you see The Thing? The prequel to The Thing? Did you watch The Thing cast watch The Thing? I sound like David Mamet hear, Check out the video of the The Thing watching The Thing and more news after the jump.

- Michael Moore’s talking about a new movie because of Occupy Wall Street, or at least that’s what he said to The Wrap.

- Deadline Hollywood tells us that they’re making a Micronauts movie. Great.

- Months before the release of the first Avengers, they’re talking about Avengers 2 to Hollywood Reporter, and who might be in it. I guess it pays to dream big.

- Melissa McCarthy (of Bridesmaids and Mike and Molly) now has a script at New Line called Tammy. It’s supposedly raunchy. So they’ll be more of that.

- Sarah Polley’s Take this Waltz has been picked up by Magnolia pictures. A fest hit, this is good news, all things. Expect it in 2012.

- Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s The Last Stand has added Johnny Knoxville and Forest Whitaker to the cast, along with legend Harry Dean Stanton.

Trailer: Forest Whitaker in Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior

Do you remember last year, when Forest Whitaker made a guest appearance on the CBS hit “Criminal Minds?” That was just a taste of what was to come, because he’s got his own series now called “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.” The network has released a full trailer for the show and it gives us a sneak peek at the rest of the cast including Janeane Garofalo. Take a look…

The show’s crew consists of Sam Cooper (Whitaker), Beth Griffith (Garofalo), Mick Rawson (Matt Ryan), Gina LaSalle (Beau Garrett), and Jonathan “Prophet” Simms (Michael Kelly). As you can see from the trailer, they’re a rag tag team that works better off the grid. Office buildings and desks are for the birds!

We’re not regular watchers of the original “Criminal Minds” so what do you think of the spin-off? Are they trying too hard or do they have their own thing going on? Could this turn out to be the next “NCIS: Los Angeles” or perhaps “CSI: Miami?” So many spin-offs, not enough space on our TV schedule!

Forest Whitaker Debuts on Criminal Minds

CBS has every network beat when it comes to making successful spin-offs of their current shows. Their latest addition will leach off “Criminal Minds and star Oscar winner Forest Whitaker as the leader of a new group of profilers. The actor will make his first appearance onscreen this week, which will lead to the introduction of his character, his team, and eventually his new series.

Whitaker along with Beau Garrett, Matt Ryan and Michael Kelly will appear on Wednesday’s (April 7th) episode of “Criminal Minds” that will have the BAU team traveling to San Francisco to track a killer. There they meet Whitaker’s character Sam Cooper, who thinks the separate cases they’re working may be connected. Isn’t that how it always starts? It’s that infamous “connection” that will spawn a new series that eventually moves on to become another ratings giant.

The premise of the new “Criminal Minds” will be the same as its predecessor just in a new location and with a new cast. It shouldn’t be hard for audiences at home to warm up to the idea of Whitaker being on their screens every week, the actor had a previous stint on the FX series “The Shield” and several guest spots on NBC’s “ER“.

Repo Men: Movie Review

This weekend Oscar nominee Jude Law and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker will both take a step out of their comfort zones to star in a sci-fi action flick. Repo Men is the big screen adaptation of the novel Repossession Mambo by Eric Garcia who also penned the screenplay. With such acclaimed material on their hands and the original author on board with the script, how did this film turn into a convoluted and detached mess?

Someone needs to “repo” Repo Men stat…

The Plot:

The film takes place in a future where vital organs needed for transplant patients can be bought on credit. On the surface it sounds like a great solution to a horrible problem right? Wrong! If you can’t continue the payments on your new found heart, lung, or kidney they will send the repo men to get you. In this case Jude Law and Forest Whitaker are two of the top guys in the repossession business and their lives are about to be turned upside down when one of them is no longer the hunter, but the hunted.

The Good:

The Action: The fight scenes in this movie were intricate and well choreographed. There was a certain level of technical difficulty used that didn’t fall back on quick editing to give it impact. Plus, it made someone as pretty as Jude Law and tiny as Alice Braga look like they could take down an entire army.
Liev Schreiber: His character is, for lack of a better word, a slime ball but he plays him like a patron Saint. Schreiber was actually a breathe of fresh air amongst a bevy of bad performances from his co-stars who all missed the mark.

The Bad:

Forest Whitaker: What the hell was he doing in this movie? This man is one of the best actors of his generation but his talent was completely lost on this caricature he brought to the screen. His role was already written badly and his over the top performance didn’t help.
The Setting: Where does this movie take place? The landscape of the city looks like something out of The Jetsons yet the residential neighborhoods look like they’re from 1960′s suburbia. Plus, Jude Law has his British accent, Whitaker has a faux New York accent and Braga sounds like she’s straight from South America. If that wasn’t bad enough, the story takes place in this high tech world yet they’re using current model iPhones and cars.
The Lack of Chemistry: Are we supposed to care about the deep rooted “friendship” between Law and Whitaker because they were like oil and water. As a matter of fact, Law didn’t have chemistry with anyone including both his love interests, which made all of his relationships and motives seem forced and ridiculous.
The Story: This is a good premise with poor execution. It starts off with one basic idea and tries to add all these different elements of surprise that does nothing for the overall arc. There’s no build up which means there’s definitely no payoff, which leaves you with no interest.

Overall:

Repo Men is an unfortunate series of events strung together by action, decent special effects and a horrible script. I’d double and even triple pass on seeing this in theaters this weekend.

Rating: 3/10

Repo Men opens in wide release on March 19th.

Jude Law in Repo Men Trailer

A red band trailer has been released for the latest Jude Law film entitled, Repo Men. It’s a sci-fi thriller that’s based on the novel Repossession Mambo by Eric Garcia. The film version has Gattica, Total Recall, Aeon Flux, and Ultraviolet written all over it. We’re not sure if that’s a good combination, so we’ll let you be the judge when you watch the trailer…

After watching this trailer several times, I lost count of how many cliches were visible within the story. This movie is trying too hard with the build up between Law and Whitaker. They’re trying to make Law some bad ass superhero and he’s not cutting it. That superhero stance at the end of the trailer was overkill. And how the hell did Liev Schreiber sneak into this film, without anyone noticing? It looks like he’s playing the same character in Repo Men that he plays in that Angelina Jolie movie, Salt. Variety is the spice of life Liev, remember that.

The film is directed by Miguel Sapochnik, and is scheduled to hit theaters on April 2, 1010.

A huge batch of photos from Spike Jonze‘s Where the Wild Things Are have popped up online. The film is based on the Maurice Sendak children’s book of the same name, and centers on the adventures of a little boy and a group of wild yet friendly creatures. The film stars Max Records as the main character, and features the voice talents of James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O’Hara, and Lauren Ambrose.

The more I look at these photos the more I realize that Jonze did an amazing job with the casting of this film. Max looks just as I imagined he would when I was a child. The outfit, the hair, even the attitude seems to shine through with Records’ portrayal.

We just received more beautiful character posters for Spike Jonze‘s upcoming masterpieces Where the Wild Things Are. We were just discussing Jonze’s choice to use men in suits rather than CGI and how that choice helped in creating the magic and beauty behind the film, and these posters are a perfect example of that. When you look at the close up of The Bull above, you can see how tactile the hair feels and how piercing the eyes are. The whole thing could be a painting.

Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker Join The Experiment

Here’s a stretch. According to THR, the creator of the now defunct Prison Break Paul Scheuring, is ready to make his feature directorial debut. The film is entitled The Experiment, and is an American remake of the Oliver Hirschbiegel 2001 German film of the same name. The featured cast is sprinkled with everyone from Oscar winners to former models.

The story for this film is based on actual events. Back in 1971, researchers conducted an experiment at Stanford University that sought to find out how ordinary people would react in a prison situation went horribly awry. As you might expect things didn’t turn out the way they planned. Oscar winners Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker have joined the cast alongside Lost alum Maggie Grace, and up and comer Travis Fimmel.

Brody will star as a the leader of the prisoners, while Whitaker will be the leader of the guards. Sounds a little West Side Story doesn’t it? Fimmel has a role as one of the prison guards, that sources say Elijah Wood was up to play. Grace will be the counterpart to Brody’s character. In terms of casting how do you go from a Hobbit to an ex-Calvin Klein model? It must be a broad role. I love of how Paul Scheuring just can’t let the concept of prison go, but to each his own.

Adrien Brody To Star In The Experiment Remake

It hasn’t been 10 years since the release of Oliver Hirschbiegel‘s German film Das Experiment yet, but already a remake is on its way. Boy, does everyone love to remakes, no matter what the genre! Director Paul Scheuring will helm Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood and Cam Gigandet in The Experiment starting next month in Iowa.

The original Das Experiment is based on the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment conducted in 1971. Check out more about the film below…

Das Experiment, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, centered on a group of ordinary men recruited to take on the roles of guards and prisoners as part of a research study and examined how the effects of assigned roles, power and control affected the participants. Brody will portray the de facto leader of the prisoners while Whitaker will play a guard who’s corrupted by the power he’s given.

Although we all may be fed up with so many remakes (let’s face it, they just aren’t as great) this one sounds pretty good. For one, the cast is strong; Adrien Brody is one of generations best performers and in this film he will “portray the de facto leader of the prisoners.” Sounds like an awesome role for him. Forest Whitaker and Elijah Wood, are also amazing as well and we all know have the ability to play up the crazy.

The thing that all three of these actors have in common, is that they always pick interesting projects with the potential to be amazing. It will be interesting to see them all on screen together in a project that has as much potential as this.

As for Scheuring, he’s spent most of his film career writing for “Prison Break” and the film A Man Apart so we know he knows about suspense.Will he be able to channel that into directing for the silver screen? We’ll find out!

50 Cent Replaces Forest Whitaker in The Expendables

Has the the world gone certifiably insane? I just came across some disturbing casting news which I’m having a hard time dealing with. According to AICN, Forest Whitaker will not be featured in Sylvester Stallone’s action flick The Expendables. This is so sad. He was one of the people who could have brought some real acting talent to the film. In place of Whitaker, Sly has tapped rapper-turned-actor Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson! (Pause) Don’t worry, I had the same reaction as you. I was completely shocked. What makes Stallone think that 50 and Whitaker are on the same level?

The Expendables shoot has been delayed a month, causing Whitaker to back out due to scheduling conflicts. This is the second recast that’s happened during the development of this film. Before this, Oscar winner Ben Kingsley dropped out and was replaced by Eric Roberts. Not to say that Roberts is on the level of Jackson, because he’s a very talented man. He may not have the fame and recognition as his sister Julia but that mans been working steadily for years. He can act, but Jackson’s a different story.

I think Stallone knew fans would feel the same way I do regarding this news, so he typed up a letter explaining his “50″ logic.

The anger of the casting of 50 Cent is understandable, but not fair. A player is only as good as his coach. If a man can communicate in one medium, he can communicate in another if his strengths are brought out and he has the support of well-wishers. So, trust me, the change of Forest Whitaker to 50 Cent AKA Curtis Jackson is a good one. No one thought Dolph Lundgren was a good choice for ROCKY or Mr. T. Carl Weathers was an afterthought when Ken Naughton fell out. The same with Talia Shire and Richard Crenna, who was known as a comedic actor, not a serious one.

It sounds to me like he was ready for the backlash. He had his statement already together. He brought up some good examples, but he forgot to mention the correlation of the actors talent versus their roles. Dolph Lundgren played a steroid infused athlete, why wouldn’t he be able to pull that off? Does the guy look like he’s a stranger to the gym? Richard Crenna was a good actor, period. He had the acting chops to support a role, whether he was inexperienced in the genre or not. I can’t see a role tailored for Whitaker being fulfilled by Jackson. He has a long way to go before he can move past “I’m a get rich, or die trying.”

Gyllenhaal, Whitaker, Jackson and Howard in Fox’s Rap Video

Jamie Fox somehow managed to get Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Samuel L. Jackson (that’s not too big of a surprise he’s in everything), and Ron Howard of all people, to show up in his new rap video for “Blame it on the Alcohol” (a blatant Grey Goose ad). How the hell did that happen? Are we really supposed to believe that Ron Howard roles up in a convertible Bentley and parties with Furries and Kristal? Are times really that bad that these three actors have had to show up in Fox’s rap video? Or is Fox just REALLY persuasive?

And the song isn’t even that good! Check out the video below…

I love that they show someone lighting a pipe right before Ron Howard’s face. Nice touch.

Is this not just insane? Can someone explain this?

Liev Schreiber Joins Jolie in ‘Salt’

It looks as if X-Men Origins: Wolverine front man Liev Schreiber will be moonlighting as an action star for a while. According to CinemaBlend, Schreiber is in negotiations to star opposite Angelina Jolie in the spy thriller, Salt. In the film “Angelina plays a CIA officer accused of being a Russian sleeper agent. She must elude capture long enough to prove her innocence.” Schreiber’s character is for lack of a better word “top secret” at the moment, but sources say it’s a major role. Salt will be directed by Phil Noyce and starts principal photography next month in New York City.

Schreiber was last seen in the Daniel Craig drama Defiance, and will appear as Sabretooth/Victor Creed in this summer’s much hyped prequel, X-Men Origins:Wolverine. He”ll also co-star in Repossession Mambo, a sci-fi thriller that features Forest Whitaker and Jude Law. Mambo is due out sometime later this year.
