Rise of the Planet of the Apes isn’t giving up easily. The sci-fi thriller clung to the No. 1 spot for a second weekend leaving behind new films like The Help, Final Destination 5 and 30 Minutes of Less. The Tate Taylor 60′s Southern film fell a few million short from Apes, and came in at No. 2 with $25.5 million. Unlike what we predicted, Final Destination 5 was far from the top spot. The horror franchise followed The Help with $18.4 million. The Jesse Eisenberg comedy had a humble opening of $13 million; while Glee The 3D Concert Movie didn’t even break into the top ten. Four new movies crowd this end of summer weekend. As TV and radio are bombarded with back to school ads, Final Destination 5, The Help, 30 Minutes or Less, and Glee the 3D Concert Movie hit the big screen. It’s a weekend that becomes a theater palette-cleanser, as the hangers-on’s that have still been playing on a couple of screens finally leave. This is bad news for films like Friends With Benefits, or The Change Up – even Cowboys and Aliens. If the goal was to have less competition from A-list titles, it’s hard to stem the tide of new products, and next week there’s also four wide releases. Check out our predictions…

We’ve got a good chunk of casting news to report today, so let’s get to it. Anthony Mackie may have lost out to Jeremy Renner for a role in Mission Impossible 4, but that hasn’t stopped him from taking other projects. According to Variety, he’s negotiating to star in a police thriller opposite Sam Worthington called Man On a Ledge. If we have to be force fed another installment in the Final Destination series, at least we’re getting a credible director. According to Variety, New Line has hired Steven Quale to direct the next 3-D horror sequel, Final Destination 5. Quale has spent the majority of his career working alongside Oscar winner James Cameron on several of his most successful films, which means he learned from the best.
