Farrah Fawcett died today of anal cancer at the Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. The woman “whose layered blonde mane and ubiquitous swimsuit poster transformed the once-unknown Charlie’s Angels star into a 70′s icon,” said Larry McShane in the New York Daily News, has left us with nothing but beautiful memories of her life.

Fawcett was born in Texas on February 2, 1947. Fawcett attended the University of Texas at Austin, but dropped out to pursue her dream of being a model and actress.

It was Fawcett’s sexuality that made her a breakout star of Charlie’s Angels – she wasn’t the girl next door, she was the blonde bombshell — But Fawcett decided to set aside roles that pinpointed her sexuality, and traded it in for more serious roles like in the 1984 TV movie The Burning Bed, in which she played an abused wife.

In 1973, Fawcett married Six Million Dollar Man star Lee Majors and in 1979 the couple separated. Shortly thereafter, Fawcett moved in with actor Ryan O’Neal, and although their relationship was troubled, they always managed to stay together. O’Neal was by Fawcett’s side at the time of her death.

The Texas-star made her way into our hearts with her silly roles and extreme beauty, and for that she will be missed.
