‘Fast Six’ Shoots Soon… Who’s In and Who’s Out

The cast of the Fast and Furious movies has become such that now each new film adds more players to the roster, along with past cast members who may or may not have been killed off in previous adventures. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson are due back, but what about the new players, and some of the people hinted at returning at the end of Fast Five?

Well, one is coming back and one isn’t. Michelle Rodriguez confirmed to Variety that she will be in the sixth entry, tentatively titled Fast Six, but we’ve also heard word that Eva Mendes- who cameoed in the last film – will not be joining the hunt. Screencrush asked the actress if she was in the film and she said no, though both left the possibility open that that could change.

Gina Carano, of Haywire fame, is in talks to join the film as a federal agent (typecasting) according to The Hollywood Reporter. We’ve also heard rumors about who’s been asked to play the villain. Rihanna – coming off of Battleship – has supposedly been asked to play a bad guy (according to The Sun), while Luke Evans has also been made an offer (according to Twitchfilm). How this all sorts out is anyone’s business. But here’s the stats:

Last Night to be Released By Tribeca Film and Miramax

Time for another dramatic romance thanks to Tribeca Film and Miramax! They have just officially announced today that they will be teaming up on the U.S. release of Last Night, which they are calling “an intricately layered relationship drama.” Sounds like every relationship story out there, the question is, is it any good? It’s got a cast that can go either way; Keira Knightley, she either puts in an Oscar nominated performances or something middle of the road (if the script isn’t there); Sam Worthington, we’re used to seeing him in action roles so it’ll be interesting to see how he is when he has to just stand and deliver a line; and then there is the always sexy, and often talented Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, the French actor that no one really knows — but soon will. Sounds like this film can go either way for me! At least now with Tribeca Film and Miramax’s help we’ll all have the chance to judge!

Tribeca Film has acquired theatrical, VOD and select digital rights to the film and plans to release the film in Spring 2011 theatrically in multiple U.S. markets, including New York and Los Angeles, and also via national VOD outlets and on additional platforms. Miramax has retained distribution rights for home video and television sales and long-term digital rights. For a film like this, it’s nice to see them embrazing the VOD and in home markets as well as cinema releases. This seems like a goody to watch on your own sofa with a drink in hand.

Last Night centers on a married couple apart for an evening when the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he’s attracted. While he’s resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love. Starring the Academy Award®-nominated Knightley (Pride & Prejudice), Worthington (Avatar), Mendes (The Other Guys), Canet (Tell No One) and Griffin Dunne (After Hours), the film is written by Massy Tadjedin, who makes her directorial debut with Last Night. Tadjedin is a screenwriter whose credits include The Jacket, which starred Knightley and Adrien Brody. Clint Mansell (Black Swan) is the film’s composer, and cinematography is by Peter Deming (Mulholland Dr.).

Here’s all the nice things the pros had to say about one another and the deal…

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Last Night drew solid from numerous critics.

The Other Guys Eva Mendes Sings Pimps Don’t Cry

Adam McKay’s latest film The Other Guys opens in theaters this weekend and it will feature plenty of buddy cop antics from Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell but who cares about them? It’s their co-star Eva Mendes who exposes her “real talent” when she sings her heart out on the song, “Pimps Don’t Cry.” Who knew she could sing? Furthermore, who knew she had a music video? We didn’t but there is one and you can watch it below…

The video debuted over on Funny or Die (no surprise there) and features Mendes alongside award winning singer/rapper/songwriter Cee-Lo.

Pimps Don’t Cry ft. Cee-Lo Green & Eva Mendes from Eva Mendes

OK, let’s be honest here. What Mendes is doing is more of a spoken word performance than actual singing. Cee-Lo comes in and saves us with his raspy, yet melodic voice to add that old school pimp feel. There’s also a throwback 1970s vibe a la Charlie’s Angels thanks to Mendes’ over-feathered hair.

Apparently this song appears at the end of The Other Guys, and it’s just one of the many surprises the closing credit sequence has in store for you.

This past weekend we sat down to a press conference with some of the cast members of The Other Guys to talk about their upcoming mock-buddy-cop comedy. Writer/Director Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes and Mark Wahlberg were all in attendance and ready to perform for the flip cams! Between Ferrell joking about forcing his children to watch him in Elf even after they start crying to Keaton grinding on Wahlberg and trying to coax him into a fight, it was more of a show than an informative event.

Official The Other Guys Teaser Trailer

Hold on to your buddy cop movie cliches because the first trailer for Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s comedy The Other Guys has hit the net. The film is directed by frequent Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay (Anchorman was awesome!) and co-stars the eternally cool Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. There are explosions, there’s dancing, and there’s Batman…we mean Michael Keaton. Check it out…

The Other Guys centers on two New York detectives Allen Gamble (Ferrell), a forensic accountant who’s more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg), a tough guy who’s been stuck with him as his partner ever since an unfortunate run-in with Derek Jeter. They both idolize the city’s top cops, Danson and Highsmith (Johnson and Jackson), but when an opportunity arises for the “Other Guys” to step up, things don’t quite go as planned.

We’d love to say that this trailer was hilarious from beginning to end but we’d be lying. There were a few instances that were chuckle worthy like the introduction of Ferrell’s wife (Eva Mendes) and Wahlberg breaking into dance but other than that it doesn’t really bring the funny.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Trailer

A theatrical trailer for Werner Herzog‘s gritty drama, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans has been released. The film stars Nicolas Cage as the title character, a morally challenged lawman, who while trying to solve a murder exposes his own personal demons which include drug addiction, theft, and gambling. After watching this trailer you can easily see why the film has the word bad in front of the title.

The original Bad Lieutenant was released in 1992, starred Harvey Keitel as the lead character, and was directed by Abel Ferrar. In this take on the film, both Herzog and Cage put their signatures on the story to make it their own. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m not particularly interested in seeing this movie because I wasn’t a fan of the original. I will admit that this trailer is a lot better than the unofficial footage they released a few months back. This one actually has a professional look to it.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Poster

I just wrote a nice post on how Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is an obvious rip off of Abel Ferrara’s 1992 cult drama Bad Lieutenant. Conveniently a poster for the film has just been released for Werner Herzog‘s remake, I mean “reimagining”of the crime drama. As you can see Nicolas Cage has attached his once credible name to another piece of questionable material.

The following photo highlights the biggest reason I will not see this film in theaters…

I don’t like the pairing of Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes. Who told them they had good onscreen chemistry? I didn’t like their pairing in Ghost Rider, and I don’t like it here. This one sheet gives me too much Mendes, and I can only take her in small doses.

I love how the poster shows stamps from multiple film festivals as a blatant attempt to give the movie credibility. I just can’t do it. After watching the trailer, Port of Call New Orleans looks like a parody of every bad cop movie ever made. Just look at the poster! Everyone on it is trying a little too hard to be bad ass. What exactly is Cage’s character looking at?

I have to be honest, the original 1992 version of Bad Lieutenant scared me, and this remake is following suit. The original starred Harvey Kietel in the title role of a morally bankrupt law man. In the new version entitled, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Nicolas Cage takes on the lead role, and he terrifies me in every way. View some official production photos below.

It’s another team up of Cage and Eva Mendes for our viewing pleasure (or poison). The two actors previously starred in the 2007 comic adaptation Ghost Rider. Another interesting casting note comes in the form of rapper-actor Xzibit aka Alvin Joiner. I was going to try and avoid saying anything about Val Kilmer, but when I look at the above photo it reminds me that Batman Forever was a long time ago!

Matthew McConaughey to Star in Southbound

Matthew McConaughey and Eva Mendes are in negotiations to star in the upcoming indie drama, Southbound. According to Variety the two actors are circling the project that will be directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz. Overnight Production’s Rick Schwartz and Aaron Kaufman are co-producing the film that will take place between the Mexican and U.S. border.

In Southbound McConaughey will star as a police officer who patrols the Mexican-U.S. border. He accepts a bribe from a Mexican woman (Mendes), and it causes a domino effect that places his immediate family in danger. The officer finds himself involved with a war between the U.S. Immigration police, and a Mexican crime family. Filming on Southbound is set to begin this fall in September.

McConaughey last starred in the romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,which quickly came and went. I miss his work circa 1996 a la A Time to Kill. Wasn’t that the one film where everyone thought “hey, this guy can act!” Too bad ever since then it’s been rom-com city. I wouldn’t mind seeing McConaughey star in a small indie flick. Perhaps this is the change he needs to escape the pressure of always having his shirt off?
