Movie Releases: Daybreakers, Youth in Revolt, Leap Year…

This week in movies is a little bit on the weak side. The vampire flick starring Ethan Hawke, Daybreakers, hits theaters. The movie is about a society of vampires that farm humans for their blood, except something goes terribly wrong. The movie hasn’t gotten great reviews, but it might fit under the category of “watchable.” The loveably-awkward Michael Cera’s new movie, Youth in Revolt, about a nerdy guy who is trying to get the hot girl to like him. It should be wildly cliched, completely-predictable, and enjoyable. Then we have the romantic comedy, starring Amy Adams, Leap Year. Tim Allen and Mathew Broderick both have limited release movies coming out this week with Crazy on the Outside and Wonderful World, respectively.

Daybreakers: Movie Review

Ready for more vampires? Of course you are! No one ever gets sick of them, do they? Hope not because Hollywood isn’t giving until they’ve drained every last cinematic drop from them. Daybreakers has tried to break the mold by making vampires the new human race. Sounds interesting enough, but did they pull it off? It’s debatable, let’s take a look…

Warning: There are some minor spoilers ahead. For those of you who know my reviews, you know that normally I try to avoid all spoilers entirely, but unfortunately I feel like they are both pertinent to the discussion of this film and chances are won’t really effect your viewing experience.

The Players:

The Plot:

The year is 2019 and the world is filled almost entirely with vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

The Good:

The Idea: It seems like we already live in a world full of vampires with Twilight, Let Me In, True Blood, Vampire Diaries (and the list continues) dominating our cinemas, TVs and the sides of many buses, so it’s refreshing to see someone try to take a new perspective on the whole craze and come up with a new world for vampires.
The Details: To further on the “idea” of the film, they came up with a number of great details that a vampire world would have such as lot of teeth whitening ads, a problem with forest fires (because they burst into flames in the day and can’t put out the fires), and cars that have black-out windows so that they can drive in the day. There was obviously someone who paid attention to details and got creative with it.
SFX (part of the time): Some of the special effects were kick-ass and others were not. You could tell when and where they spent their money and when they ran out of it. That being said, when they spent it they did a great job with it. If only someone had given them enough to make the whole film look as good as certain moments.
Social-Political Issues: Instead of just making this a cheesy vampire film, they attempt to take on some larger issues that are pertinent to our modern society such as world hunger and a trigger happy military. Although it was nice that they went there, some of the issues felt a bit shoe-horned and therefore never reached there full potential. Nice effort though!

The Bad:

Aside from not having enough money and some sound problems (including Ethan Hawke saying a line when his lips weren’t moving- GASP! ) the main problems that I had with the film stemmed from breaking the normal vampire rules without justification. Lets take a look…

Breaking the Rules:

They can eat food and drink things others than blood. They serve coffee with 95% coffee, 5% blood and a dash of cream. The costumers are not happy but they’re able to drink it. How is this possible? They’re dead! Don’t even get me started on the cakes and muffins they have laid out.
They can’t heal themselves, or at least not quickly. They have bandages on their arms, cuts, scars, and therefore are vulnerable.
You can have animal vampires, which I’m guessing means that animals can go to heaven and hell, because if not, how could they be vampires? Isn’t the point that your soul is damned? Also, how are animals being turned? Are people turning them? That kind of takes away from the sexy vampire image we normally have in our heads.
The only thing it takes to turn you into a vampire is one bite. There’s no great ceremony, no death, no burial no nothing. Just one bite and a big suck.
They’re not especially strong. I get that in a world full of vampires, one is not much stronger than the other, but they’re also not that much stronger than humans.

Bottom Line: The only thing these vampires have are fangs, contact lenses, and immortality. They have none of the sexuality, blood-lust, or violent inclinations that make vampires so much fun to watch.

Overall:

Although they had some moments where things jump out at you, the film was not nearly as scary as it needed to be. It’s an interesting idea but it’s not very well executed and the story has a number of holes that are hard to look past. That being said, I’d watch it again before I watched Twilight!

Brooklyn’s Finest Theatrical Trailer

A theatrical trailer has been released for Antoine Fuqua‘s urban drama, Brooklyn’s Finest. The film stars Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Jesse Williams, and Wesley Snipes, and centers on the contrast between loyalty and corruption inside a local New York police department.

Brooklyn’s Finest is produced by Overture Films, and has a similar tone to Fuqua’s previous cop drama, Training Day. It’s hard for you to watch this trailer and not see elements from the film resurface, especially with Hawke featured in one of the main roles. Here’s the breakdown of the plot:

Burned out veteran Eddie Dugan (Gere) is just one week away from his pension and a fishing cabin in Connecticut. Narcotics officer Sal Procida (Hawke) has discovered there’s no line he won’t cross to provide a better life for his long-suffering wife and seven children. And Clarence “Tango” Butler (Cheadle) has been undercover so long his loyalties have started to shift from his fellow police officers to his prison buddy Caz (Snipes), one of Brooklyn’s most infamous drug dealers. With personal and work pressures bearing down on them, each man faces daily tests of judgment and honor in one of the world’s most difficult jobs.

It’s interesting that these photos have surfaced right after we asked our readers whether or not the Hollywood vampire trend was on the decline. This film is definitely no Twilight and focuses on the gory side of these bloodsuckers.

New Futuristic Daybreakers Poster

An exclusive poster has been released for the upcoming flick Daybreakers over at MTV, and it looks a hell of a lot better than the teaser from a few months back. The film is a vampire tale that meshes horror and science fiction with Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke at the center of it all. Daybreakers is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig and will hit theaters on January 8th.

Besides Hawke the rest of the cast includes, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen alum, Isabel Lucas. The poster for this film looks like a hybrid between The Matrix, and dare I say Gattaca?

A few photos have been released for the vampire themed, Daybreakers. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Claudia Karvan. The story centers on a world plagued by vampires, and a blood chemist named Edward Dalton (Hawke) who tries to save the human race. Don’t these look like set photos from Buffy they Vampire Slayer? I can’t be the only one who sees that. The crossbows are a dead give away, those were the weapons of choice on both Angel and Buffy. Daybreakers appears to be a legit vampire film, amongst the many that have congested the movie market.

Daybreakers is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, and is scheduled to hit theaters on January 8, 2010. Typically January is considered dump month, but I think this film has potential.

New York, I Love You Trailer Starring EVERYONE

This is quite possibly one of the biggest cast of directors and actors out there. New York, I Love You is a combination of 12 short films that take place in New York. The film follows (or rather pays omage to) the style of Paris, Je T’Aime. Each film has a different director, different actors, but they all come together in one way; they are about finding love in New York.

The film includes a series of short films directed by Jian Wen, Mira Nair, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Khapur, Natalie Portman, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston and Randy Balsmyer. The film’s ensemble cast includes actors from all different genres including: Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Andy Garcia, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Natalie Portman, Irrfan Khan, Emilie Ohana, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, Anton Yelchin, James Caan, Olivia Thilrlby, Blake Lively, Drea de Matteo, Julie Christie, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Ugur Yucel, Taylor Geare, Carlos Acosta, Jacinda Barrett, Shu Qi, Burt Young, Chris Cooper, Robin Wright Penn, Eva Ammuri, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman.

For something that could seem so hectic, it’s actually very easy to take in. It’s nice to see such a wide variety of talent together. It seems like it’s a great excuse for some bigger stars who haven’t really done the romantic dramedy scene yet (Orlando Bloom, Shia La Beouf) to give the genre a try, as well as a place for up and comers (Rachel Bilson, Olivia Thirlby) to work with some big names.

The film will be in theaters October 28th.

Daybreakers’ Vampire Poster

Brothers Michael and Peter Spierig are co-directing the upcoming vampire thriller Daybreakers. Now, before you put this film on the “another lame vampire flick,” list know that Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe will star as vampires, so you might want to stick around. The film has been in the works since the beginning of this year, but today Ain’t It Cool News finally debuted its first poster.

In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most human beings into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

I like that the poster is completely red since the film deals with vampires, and blood-sucking will be imminent. Light touches of yellow, black and white make it very artsy and it’s great that not too much is going on. Could this be due to a good sense of direction? We’ll have to wait for the trailer to find out.

Daybreakers is set to hit theaters January 8, 2010.
